Can the Rom Itself Affect 4G Speeds - HTC EVO 3D

Just a dumb question

I don't think so... although I think this was an issue when they were reverse engineering wimax to work on the OGVO

The reason I ask is because I use my phone for internet in my apt. I switched from Clean Rom to Viper and now notice consistent lag on xbox live games where as before it was rare to see lag

So you're "that guy" sucking up all of Sprint's bandwidth... I'm surprised at any point you could play on XBL without plenty of lag.

a lot of bootleg network 'tweaks' done in build.prop and from scripting can definitely have a negative effect on network performance. Half of these tweaks were designed for either GSM phones, old phones like the G1, or computers.

The speeds are great, on my old rom i didn't get any lag.
What am I supposed to do? I moved apt's and didn't set up internet because i had the free 4g tethering....am i wrong?

Mehh... I'm not gonna start up that debate, just do as you please. You could always try a different ROM to see how that effects your speeds.

No you shouldn't be. If your a gamer.. just pay for a real isp. You were just lucky there wasn't lag before.

Gotta agree with this one. If you're a gamer, get some real internet. It's not that expensive. And it's massive free tethering bandwidth like that that's causing Sprint to crack down on ****. Don't ruin it for the rest of us, man!

While it does cause them to crack on tethering what about downloading torrents on your phone with 4g ttorrent will let u do that. So its not just the few "rooted" people its also those people as well. Just in case u didn't know there are torrent progs for android.

Lol ok pretty sure the free tether people is a lot smaller number maybe I'm wrong tho. Reason I say this I see people always posting they use WiFi the vast majority of the time.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

since the debate is already in full effect...whether you are tethering (without paying for the hotspots service) or hitting up torrents, you are against your Sprint Terms of Service. By doing this, you are part of the reason that Sprint's network is so gotdamn congested and that they are slowly implementing data caps. I'm not gonna call you a crook but seriously, stop being so selfish and get real internet ...

This is hilarious....Is rooting your phone against sprints TOS? I'm sure it is...why would i root my phone to get the free wifi tether and not use it?
If you want me to stop, feel free to send me a check every month for comcast internet. I do accept paypal

You may find it funny now, but when Sprint cracks down and takes away unlimited smartphone data, you'll be one of the ones crying "Oh noes! Now I has to pay for interwebz! Why they take away my free unlimited! I was only circumventing their rules and not paying for it like I was supposed to!"
Besides, although you may not notice the lag, I'm sure everyone else on Live hates you for it.

When TeamWin reversed engineered 4G, it was for AOSP roms. Sense based roms never had issues with 4G (unless they were ports from other phones that didn't use WiMax).
The same applies to roms for the 3D. Shooter based roms shouldn't have any adverse effects where 4G is concerned.

'tis implied youngling... seeing as how Sense ROMs would never have had issues with Wimax working. I should've specified "on AOSP ROMs".

How about forking over the few dollars for a legit license? Asshole.
It baffles me that people who own $600-700 phones and pay $80-100+ a month don't want to fork over a few dollars for an app that someone developed in their spare time.

Ummmm, no... wifi tether is a free app and can be downloaded directly from the dev. The reason it isn't available right now on the market is because VZW is blocking it, they want you to pay to tether. Technically it is against the ToU to teather on the VZW network without paying them and I'm guessing that people that are using wifi tether are going to be seeing some charges on their bills.

Was rooting worth it?

For the whole month of waiting for S-off the only thing that was going on in here was people complaing and bashing other people. Well now that we have S-off it seems every thread is someone having problems with there phone after they rooted it. It seems to me this is why sprint and htc dont want us toying with these phones. I dunno, the "no calls/txt/data" is a problem that is hit-or-miss when you do a hands-free-activation....root or not. It happened to me, took me under 2 minutes to have fixed by Sprint, who did it happily.
People losing 4G? I don't think this network is robust enough to blame that on root...and even if that is in an area with a rock solid 4G signal I still think there may be some user intervention at play that isn't the fault of getting s-off all by it self.
The funky "turning on, or not, or plugged in, or not, or take out battery, or sdcard, or both, or not" problems were there from the begining...I used to think it was only certain phones, but, I think it's all phones in certain conditions. Being s-off and rooted gives us the ability to put the phone into more conditions where that may or may not happen.
...and as far as battery performance is concerned it's nearly impossible to prove that it ISN'T user/application related. I'm not saying it definitely IS their fault, but, it's impossible to prove that...so many conditions vary for your phone so frequently every day even if yours do not that battery life claims are nearly impossible to prove and impossible to refute based on any changed variable all by itself....not to mention a near 100% chance of someone else reporting the exact opposite condition.
...aside from my data going slow after hands-free-activation (which is fixed in 2 minutes) I have experienced none of these problems after rooting...okay, I take that back, I have experienced the "sometimes it turns on while plugged in, sometimes it doesn't"...but, it did that before s-off/root as well.
...and let's not forget that the s-off hack likely has nothing to do with these issues. I have the eng hboot...non-hacked. Just the way god intended. If it is from anything it would be from the rooting of the ROM, which I still doubt.
Honestly, compared to the initial period after the s-off/root exploits releases for other devices this doesn't seem out of the ordinary at all...and no offense meant, but, are you new to this?
EDIT: Oh yeah, to answer your question....yes, s-off and rooting were VERY worth it to me. Now bring on the AOSP
No way. I hate having a better phone

Two words: User error. The problems you see are because people do not know what they are doing. Simple as that. Rooting your phone does nothing but give you permission to be able to do what you want to do with "your" phone.

Yeah, that's a really good point. I think that Sprint in general has probably been taking in a lot of new users, likely mostly smartphone users, because of the unlimited data thing...and the fact that Sprint actually has the most compelling collection of smartphones right this second IMHO. Sadly I'm thinking about jumping ship since this signal is just useless to me in most places now, and that's to say nothing of the over-loaded network.
...not to mention the droves of E4G defectors who were following the developers, and the larger and more frequent droves of defectors from every phone from the last generation that want the developer support that the E4G had but they definitely did not see...and then there are all of the people who finally got off of their contract from Heros and Moments from when they were still hot items....
...so, yeah, there is just so many goddamned people in here that I'd be surprised if there weren't more complaints on average. Contrast this to the NookColor forum where there are far more actual tricky problems but nobody blames the root method for them missing a step or not understanding a process...not to mention how god damned civil it is around there.

To me it was worth it. However I've noticed many issues are because folks don't read, can't follow instructions, make changes without knowing WHAT they are doing.
Sorry but if you don't know what changes you're making, what issues they cause, how to fix, how to undo what you screwed up, then they shouldn't be rooting, flashing and changing settings.
By "you" I don't necessarily mean you, but more of a "folks in general".

Soooooo, chill buddy.

Might get AT&T SGS2, any problems I should know about?

Hey guys, I currently have the Epic 4G Touch with Sprint but there is a good chance that I might jump ship and come over to AT&T. If I do, the GS2 would most likely be the phone I will get. It's gonna be tough working with such a tiny screen (lol!) but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Don't want the Skyrocket because it doesn't have an Exynos in it and the HSPA+ should be plenty fast for my needs.
Anyway, all Android phones come with their fair share of problems out of the box, what am I going to have to deal with if I get the SGS2? Any radio issues? Battery problems? Screen problems? How does AT&T handle tethering? I heard about them catching people and changing them to a hotspot plan, is that true? Also, does AT&T still block app sideloading?
I plan on rooting but remaining on the stock ROM, assuming it's as good as the Epic Touch's stock ROM. Just gonna debloat the crap out of it and use Autostarts to keep everything under control. Should I go ahead and assume that rooting it is fairly easy?
Also, how is AT&Ts customer service to work with? I have been with Sprint for many years and have gotten manipulating them down to a science. I always get the latest and greatest phones, and never have to pay more than the subsidized price. I'm kinda nervous about switching because I'm worried I won't be able to pull that crap with AT&T.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

Trust me, I've already read through a whole bunch of crap. I am just looking for some personal experiences here without having to read through page after page of meaningless drivel just to find a few simple answers.
only downside i can think of is if you drop it from the 10th floor the screen will crack... and it doesnt seem to work well in the pool.
It is a great device, only complaint i have is the non HD screen. If you are coming from a phone with high res like a iphone you will notice. If you arent coming from a high res phone you will never notice
You might have more issues with AT&T than the phone. Overall its a great phone with lots of dev support. there's a reason why AT&T is always at the bottom of the Lissy when out comes to customer services.

Most of the issues can be found by searching.
Hardware issues: Some people have had issues with the USB port breaking. Not common, but it seems that 90% of hardware failures are this.
The AP Mobile widget in UCKH7 will eat your data. If you're here I assume you'll be rooting - so not a problem for you. Kill it with fire and you're good.
The OTA update (UCKK6) sucks infected donkey balls. Lots of battery issues. Again - easy to avoid if you're here.

Ha! I post there from time to time! I was one of the Android Source admins before it merged with Android Task Force. Haven't used this profile pic on FB for a while now so you've got some good memory.
Hardware = USB problems with the connection port. Blotchy screen on dark blacks in a dark room. Not noticeable until then. It's a side-effect of SAMOLED screens. Burn-in most I can figure. These two problems are fairly rare (on this forum, I'd say 1 out of maybe 15 people complain of one or the other hardware issues).
Software: let's face it - 2.3.6 sucks. The update broke bluetooth HID devices, meaning no bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Occasional reports of wifi breaking, but that's due to the retards who never read and flash willy nilly from our sister forum and phone, the international GS2 without using the development tool Hellraiser. So, be educated man. If you don't read, you will end up ****ing your phone over, and then if you whine about it (which inevitably happens every time someone who doesn't read screws their phone up), prepare to be flamed. At that point you piss everyone who's seen your same thread or situation a hundred times from people who didn't search and read.
There are reports of battery drain issues due to 2.3.6 as well. Some of these are from programs, but if you're an Android user already, you know to kill and save RAM. I've had occasional reboots from when I pushed my phone hard, but nothing of diminishing value.
AT&T Service: Customer service sucks, so I hear. But they've always worked with me. I got them to unlock multiple phones in the past, I was grandfathered in to unlimited, and they've let me skirt waiting periods on my next update. I suppose if you're a new customer it might be different. I wouldn't know. Their service as far as phone calls and data? It ain't the best. To be honest, I don't get many dropped calls per week, but I know I get enough to remember that I get dropped calls weekly. Data can be spotty at times, but overall, in Orlando, it's fast.
My Review: moving from any other phone to this one is like being born again. You believe in technology again. Alright, so it ain't that much of a spiritual experience, but lemme tell you - this phone is fast. Yet, if you want the latest and greatest from Android, specifically 4.0.3, I'd pass on this phone. We will probably get it. Maybe. Our devs will work to make it happen, but sadly I doubt it will be an official update.
If you want solid hardware and a reliable phone however and don't mind gingerbread, this is the phone for you. It is fast, well-built, and has good battery life from my experience. I use it heavily for everything, and i get nearly 14-18 hours of heavy use (phone calls, texts, music, videos, downloads, web-surfing).
4.5 out of 5 stars for this phone from me.

Thanks for taking the time to type all that out autonomous, thats the type of response I was looking for. I am coming from Sprint's SGS2 variant so I'm well aware of how badass these phones are. I could care less about ICS, I had the Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks and returned it because I like the SGS2 + 2.3 + TouchWiz better. I'm probably gonna go to Costco over the weekend and pick it up to try it out and see how AT&Ts service in my are is.

Sprint and AT&T are in the same family with their Exynos chipset, which I'm sure you're aware of. The difference is that we are closer in relation to international. No WiMax chipset in ours, so easier porting.
AT&T is a fairly good provider. Service is decent, even out in the country, but it doesn't make you say "Man, Ma Bell is great about their connectivity everywhere."
While I told you we probably won't get an official Ice Cream update we WILL get one in one shape or form. 2.3.6 problems can be avoided by Hellraising a 2.3.4, 2.3.7 or 2.3.5 ROM. So if you want to avoid battery drain issues and use your bluetooth keyboard or mouse, you have your choices.
Bottom line brother, is with this phone you have options. We have devs, and tools that give you many options. If you're asking me if you should make the jump, I'd have to ask why, because WiMax with Exynos seems like a good setup, but if it's for a sensible reason, you could do worse than Ma Bell. If it's assurance you want, yes, this is and will be a good phone for quite a while. Yes, AT&T is decent, and yes, you will be fairly satisfied.
As a disclaimer, every experience is different, so I suggest you either look around this forum and make your mind that way, or bite the bullet and don't look back by moving to AT&T blindly, and go for the shortest contract you can.

My first I777 overheated while charging. And now my second one has a buzzing in the earpiece. Good specs and I love the TouchWiz UI. Maybe Im just unlucky but it seems the hardware in this phone has issues.

Incorrect, it has nothing to do with 2.3.6, there's no 2.3.7 Samsung roms either. It's at&t's UCKK6 build, international 2.3.6 roms aren't plagued by the issues

3D

Is HTC abandoning ship on 3D? Are there any new phones with 3D from HTC?
I bought the EVO 3D because I'm fascinated by it. I guess I still haven't outgrown it yet.
I like watching movies in 3D. I like playing games in 3D. I taking pictures in 3D.
The reason I have not flashed a current rom with the ICS leak is I don't want to lose any of the 3D features. Its the sole reason I bought this phone. Turge's KingCobra 2.4 is about the best it gets before things start failing. I'm sticking with it at least until there is an official update of ICS and everything in 3D works.
Anyway, what is the future of 3D as far as HTC is concerned?
.
They've given up on 3D... I woundn't expect any more 3D content except just having 3D working in future updates.
Also, the 3.6 leaks have 3D fully working.

This might make the EVO 3D more valuable in the future.
I remember using my Audiovox SMT 5600 at work. I could leave it on my desk and walk anywhere in the factory up to 400 feet and the Bluetooth headset would still receive just fine.
Most, if not all of today's phones only broadcast up 30 to 40 feet.
I guess my point is that sometimes abandoning a feature is not always a good thing.

Sadly, nobody really wants 3D anymore so it's dropping value extremely fast. You could probably pick one up for $150 now.

I still see people posting that certain games won't work in 3D and 3D you tube videos won't play in 3D and some movies won't in play in 3D mode using stock player.
I'm going to wait a little longer.
As far as Facebook, Google, SMS, Twitter or any of those bugs. I can live without all that. So that is fine.

Is that with a contract?
I bought mine outright on Ebay awhile back. I just use a prepaid GSM ATT card. No Contract. I just checked Ebay and prices have not dropped at all. They are still selling new at between $350.00 - 400.00.
Can you tell where to pick up a couple at $150.00?
Thanks.

Au contraire, monsieur.
First of all, you have 12 sons? That seems like a feat in itself. Also, you should have put "The 3D *function* is a* gimmick; only my 12 *year old* son enjoys it."
Also, while you might not like the 3D, that is no reason to put down others who enjoys it. By your above statement, you are implying that those who enjoy the 3D function are immature; this statement is clearly untrue. While it is true that many people get headaches from watching movies or playing games in 3D, that is no reason to insult the ones who don't. So please, if you can't state your point in a less insulting manner, don't say anything at all.
On another note, your post reminded me of the "an hero" thing .

Interesting, thanks. I am no fan of Apple but gotta give them credit for what they've come out with.
I'm proud to say that I've never owned any Apple product and I hope I never will.
Been an HTC fan for a long long time. I am a Microsoft fan also. Although I don't think I'm going with windows 8. I probably will become a full blown Ubuntu user after they stop supporting Windows 7. (which will probably be a long time from now).

Thanks! sort of proves my suspicions that it should make the phone worth more now that its off the market. People who want this 3D feature and can't get it would pay more for it.
I would absolute love to pick up two or three new GSM phones at $150.00 each. I don't think that's possible.
If someone has a link to these prices, please post it. I am sure there are some dealers out there who would love to unload such an unpopular phone.
Kind of reminds me of when I tried to purchase a Volkswagon Golf with a Diesel engine. The dealership told me that no one wants a Diesel engine. I said ok fine then you should be anxious to get rid of them. He said it would cost me an extra $5,000.00 to get it with a Diesel engine. Make any sense to you?

Okay. Trying to grasp your point.
"No one wanted them." You are dealer (just pretend, I know you're not)
You have inventory. You need to sell it off. You should want to get rid of it right? Sell it cheap and be done with it. That is business.

My apologies. I thought you were talking about the Evo 3D.
sorry.
I dunno, maybe its just me but, 3D without wearing the glasses is huge.
This is the only phone that exists that can do that. Well Lg has one but let's go there. Not a good phone.
Imagine if you whipped one of these babies out during the Salem MA witch trials. You'd be cooked on a stick.
Imagine just 20 years ago speaking of such a device. People would have laughed at you.
I remember being a truck driver and going to truck stops and having to plug into a hub to get internet access. I remember saying why can't we log on thru our cell phones? I was laughed at. They told me I was living in fantasy land. That was when Bill Clinton was President.
Remember the Honeymooners? Ralph Cramden told his wife he was waiting for 3d TV before he bought a television set. That was 1959. Before I was born.
Now we have a device that fits in your shirt pocket that will play the latest movies in HD 3D and people say oh its a gimmick. Only an immature 12 year old would be interested in such a thing.
I don't know, maybe its me. Maybe I'm missing something here.

HTC on the verge of collapse; Taiwan bank proposes bailout

HTC has been really struggling lately, and now with OnLive costing them $40 million, things are definitely not looking good.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think we're going to start seeing the effects of all of this loss soon? I'm worried about new devices releasing, as well as updates being given to existing devices, if the company keeps falling like this.

Ouch, definitely doesn't sound good. Not sure if they will be able to stay in it or not...depending on how this whole Apple/Samsung thing turns out, they may be able to use it to their advantage, but it sounds like they've got some pretty big issues to deal with. I think I'm already pretty much resigned to getting whatever Samsung's offering is when I'm eligible for my next upgrade. I had a tough time choosing this time around anyway, so I figure I'll give them a shot (never owned a Samsung)...but it sounds like that may be the "only" option if things don't improve for HTC.

Good, sometimes drastic things need to happen before a company makes drastic changes necessary.
I guess it is what it is. I am happy with the EVO LTE. I'm going with a Nexus next time around since they will hopefully be beyond the stupid pentile screens by then. Maybe we will get lucky and HTC will get a Nexus at some point in the future.
If rim and Nokia are still in business I think htc will be OK for now.. they do need to start making better decisions and listening to their customers ..they are still turning almost a billion dollar profit this quarter ..still pretty good

They're hurting, but I have high hopes that they come back even stronger. They need to make a few adjustments to the way they work, and it can make all the difference. For one, be as dev friendly as they used to be. Second, less device models as they made it seem like they were going to do. They need to cut as much variants out, and focus on keeping close to the same phone amongst different carriers. That's my opinion.

It's funny because you probably didn't even read the article.
They're making a profit, but they're still a shadow of their former glory. Their market share has plummeted and it isn't showing any signs of improving. Just because they're still pulling in money doesn't mean that everything is sunshine and rainbows for them.
HTC is still a profitable company, but with such relentless competition from Samsung and Apple, their numbers are dropping fast enough that banks are beginning to get very nervous. This could quite literally be the beginning of the end.

I don't think that HTC is going to go out of business. I'm hoping that they can come up with something that can stabilize them a bit. In my opinion they need to make like Samsung and give their phones more of an identity.
They need try harder to keep their phones in order instead of releasing 20 different devices. They've taken a step in the right direction with the One series, but the naming is way too confusing for most people to be able to tell what the phone is all about. HTC needs a way to make a budget, mid-end, and high-end phone that isn't different on every carrier and that represents itself well.
With the One series, you have the One X, the One XL, the One S, the One V, and I'm sure that the upcoming/rumored One "XL+" (or whatever we call it) will join that lineup as well. The names just have no way of differentiating themselves without looking into the specs. If you walked up to someone and said, "Do you want the One V or the One S?" They're going to say, "Huh? What do the letters mean?"
But with all of the growth that Samsung has seen, I'm not sure that HTC will ever be able to catch up.
That settles it...I am buying a spare Rezound
