Agreed! In fact, I think YOU should port ICS to the Vibrant, you being an AndroidKing and all.

While the SDK has been made available, no device source has nor will there be until after the first device officially ships. Google has already made that aspect clear.
A couple of other devices have WIP level alpha's available, all of which are easily months away from "fresh", less stable or worthwhile unless you are a developer. As you are not a developer (and neither am I) I'd suggest being happy with your phone or helping out on some of the Gingerbread ports in progress.
It'll be a while....

Looking forward to 2.3, a question about the future. After 2.3

My question. At what point will I no longer be able to use the latest and greatest Android version? IE windows 7 isn't going to run on a windows 95 machine. When will my Vibrant be the windows 95 machine? From 95 to 7 might be to much a jump but you get my point.
Its already clear that this time is soon. With all this near field stuff that if I'm correct my vibrant can't do. And of course I only have one camera so all this video phone stuff isn't going to happen....
I also have read that google is going to slow down its releases. Will I be installing Android 2.5?
Just a question I dreamed up falling asleep last night, interesting to think about. I dread the day!
Thanks for all the work! Running Obsidian 4.2, I freaking love my phone. really. Its AWESOME. Came from a jailbroken, unlocked iPos 3g and omg did I hate it.
Thanks again.
Nick
Why isn't this in q&a? Anyways gingerbread requires a 1ghz processor. So you are good for that. As for further releases let me dust off my time machine. Considering the nexus s is virtually identical in specs to the vibrant aside from the ffc, I think we may be able to support past 2.3 but don't know.

You need to do some more research to get a better idea what Nexus S is and what the NFC chip does. This topic belongs in general for starters. Realistically there is no one who is going to have an exact answer although chances of you owning a new phone by the time your Vibrant stops getting updates is pretty high.
I'm sure we'll be able to get past 2.3 there's so many nods these days, that I'm sure we will be fine.

My doubt in particular - especially towards the NFC Chip and Gyro Sensors.

Why? These are hardware and driver related. What is the issue removing the drivers? Like the FFC mod just needed the drivers and implementation into the Rom. Or are you referring to what these do and Vibrant being outdated?
Thread moved to Q&A.
The issue we will meet first is not whether our hardware is up to the task, but whether we have a kernel. The original Nexus One is actually slated to get Android 2.3 before the Nexus S launch date and both the Nexus phones will go well beyond Android 3.0 because there will always be kernel source code available. Contrast that with the Vibrant where we have to rely on Samsung's good will to release a kernel. We'll probably get one for 2.3 (albeit several months if not a year from now) but I would not be surprised if 3.0 is out of the question. Once Samsung stops releasing kernels, it will be entirely in the hands of developers who will be working without source code.
Have those "previously suggested but also previously confirmed to be innacurate spec requirement rumors" now NOW official? If that makes sense. .. (?)

SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
Have no fear. As near as I can tell, the Nexus S is basically the same hardware as the Vibrant + FFC. Eugene tweeted that he plans to port 2.3 over to the Vibrant once the Nexus S source is released. If he can get it to work, I see no reason our vibrant's will not be able to be updated anytime the Nexus S is for the foreseeable future.
And its not necessarily Samsung that's causing the update issue. T-Mobile is pretty dang slow when it comes to releasing updates. I'm sure, if the Nexus S is supposed to be next in the line of Google dev phones, that Google has some kind of contract with Samsung about developing drivers for any new version of Android that gets released.
My G1 is running the latest and greatest.
There is NOT a minimum processor speed.
Our phones have incredible hardware.
Have no worries about the future.

[Q] Whats the possibility of CM7?

Whats the chance of getting CM7 on the SGS2?
Is the SGS a fully supported CM7 phone?
I'm a HTC man myself (DHD atm), but the SGS2 is looking mildly tempting due to the AMOLED screen, loud speaker and great .mkv playback capabilities as I watch quite a bit of video.
I am leaning more towards the Sensation due to the 16:9 qHD screen and the fact I've never been let down by a HTC device yet.
But I've really got used to CM7. Whilst I'm sure the Sensation will get CM7 on it... at some point, I reckon the SGS2 will get it first.
It's a big hmmmmmmmm from me atm
Very doubtfull you will see any custom roms on HTC now mate because there locking bootloaders
The device hasn't even been rooted yet but I'd say it's only a matter of time. If it's a deciding factor for you then hang fire but I'm actually quite liking touchwiz 4 and that's something I never thought I'd say.

Samsung is very good about releasing source, just check http://opensource.samsung.com they will post the source within a few weeks I'm sure.
sorry to ask this noob question, but why do you need cm7 on this phone? is it laggy? lacking features ?

Because this forum is for developers and development of ROMs, otherwise why would you be on this forum
some people want root regardless as they like to tinker.
also enables useful features like
titanium backup / Clock recovery so you can easily backup/clone your phone state
overclock (speed) / undervolt (battery)
CIFs for mounting windows shares or presenting itself as a windows share (very useful esp over wifi, look ma no cables)
get rid of touchwiz and other preinstalled stuff (I haven't used touchwiz 4 but I like stock android and I'm a speed freak)
I never rooted/custom ROMed my nexus one (as I love stock android) but it was the first thing I did to my galaxy tab and will be the first on my list with any non stock android phone

There's a chance it might get cm7 but it'll require a lot of work, the current sgs has cm7 but its still in alpha stage since samsung doesn't release the source for its proprietary drivers, everything has to be made from scratch(ie. time consuming). I don't think anyone whose working on cm7 for the sgs wants to do this again.

all upcoming HTC devices will have locked bootloader, plus i strongly doubt we're going to see CM7 on SGS2 since Samsung doesnt release (or at least not so far) the source code of the drivers.
wait, does this mean no custom ROMs for SGS2 or rather they will just be less drastic modifications?
for example I don't think the galaxy tab custom ROMs use written from scratch drivers.
sorry new to custom roms.
There will be plenty of custom ROMS. Just not AOSP rom anytime soon.
Basically with AOSP you will loose a lot which includes all the multimedia capabilities ( ability to play many containers and codecs natively with hardware acceleration ), hardware GPU acceleration in browser, probably MHL link and HD recording.
There are very few people who will be ready to give up all this to get AOSP rom for this phone.

Man,never been a big fan of CM Roms, have moved to MIUI Froyo Rom{now with Formels MIUI Android 2.3 Rom},,tried CM many times but battery drain & other force close issues were in plenty.MIUI works best with my Nexus 1,,extremely fast, smooth, less battery drain ROM.
As far as Sensation goes,i hope it will be rooted, also it will be by June end when both SGS 2 & Senation will be launched in my region,so will have clear idea as to which one is getting more devs support{as xda support is what is most important for me rather than the phone itself}.
Have such a great time with N1.

Not only Cyanogen, there are various different devs with their custom roms, but CM is used in most of the droids.
Samsung Galaxy S has a pathetic lag issue/faulty gps issue.
Even after so many lagfixes & workaround{in various roms},it still is very fragile.
Therefore you will definitely see people asking about SGS 2 lag issue or any GPS issue{hopefully GPS is great here in SGS 2 by default compare to quite pathetic in SGS}

As I said, I'm a HTC fan, but one thing I am not is a Sense fan! I can only presume that will extend to TW, although I have never tried it. I also like to run my phone at 190dpi instead of the standard 240dpi that most phones run at. And with Sense at least, when you change to anything other than 240dpi, it does not like it one bit!

[Q] any hope for an ics update?

So, do you think samsung will ever update these devices to ice cream sandwich? Would anyone care enough to try to make a port? I don't have this device yet but I plan to get the 5 inch one for christmas and no ice cream sandwich won't stop me from getting it but I was just curious. Thanks!
I honestly don't expect Samsung to update these to ICS(but here's to hoping). We may see a port sometime though(I'm personally waiting for someone to port cyanogenmod to it, so that I can do some work with porting)

I hope someone makes a port for this right now I'm using a Ice Cream Launcher instead of the built in Launcher.
Not to get off the topic too much...but does anyone know specific time frame Sammy will update the players so we can access Media Hub?
last i read there would be an "update in the future"....boo!
Curious, I don't have a Samsung TV (but may buy one soon), how is "Media Hub" different than "Smart View" (that's on these players)?
ICS?
I hope someone makes a port for this right now. Anyone had news?

Actually I don't have high hopes for ICS. The "Y" in the device name YP-G70 means "(Young) – These are entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price."
See more about the naming scheme here http://www.androidguys.com/2011/08/24/samsung-debuts-galaxy-products-naming-convention-eve-ifa/ .
I think Samsung will put their ICS effort on other "high-end" devices first.

The YP series existed a long time ago as YEPP (young, energetic, passionate, person)because it is the model code for the mp3 players for samsung. it is not obligated to be a young audience. Take the samsung p3 for exemple (YP-P3) which is released in 2007 or 2008 (way before the article.) I think they will maybe release it if they release it to the original galaxy s (they have the same hardware capabilities.)Otherwise we can always wait for some custom roms. (CM9 ) And I want to know why people prefer 5.0 to the 4.0? (There's not enough talk about the 4.0 as I have one.)
media hub is the acess point for movies, tv shows, etc for samsung mobile devices...i have several movies and shows i would love to watch on the player while traveling but i dont think we have access yet without an OTA.

I agree! I mean, I would think the 4" would be more popular, since it can easily fit in pocket, but the screen is still plenty big!
Really too bad because I have a feeling all development towards roms is going to go to the 5.0, and not the 4.0 (not sure if a 5.0 rom would work on a 4.0).
Concerning ICS, kinda doubt it since it took them almost a year to update it to gingerbread!
Of course, maybe they will, but by that time, jellybean will be the new kid on the block, lol!

I bought the 5.0 because it is pretty much the biggest possible size that I can still hold it with one hand. If you are commuting on train STANDING, you need to grab the hand rail using the other hand. Galaxy tab or iPad are way too big to use this way. For me, 4.0 is too small, I may just go with some newer super phone with 4 inch+ screen. Actually the new Galaxy Note is interesting.

As I said there's always the option for the custom rom but as you said all the developpement will go to the 5.0. As you had probably saw on ABI there a custom rom and kernel for the internationnal 4.0 (this is a great beginning I think.) I did some tests and post a little review on the thread. It is great for a first custom rom!
Yup, just saw that, hope it will get things rolling! Wonder how hard it would be to get it running on U.S version...
Only now do I see I should have payed a little extra for importing a international version instead of U.S. version, Ah well.

And they already upgraded it from froyo to gingerbread so an ICS might not come right now (if it ever comes).

should i buy this phone ? !!

hello guys , right now i'm a htc wildfire s owner and i'm looking to replace it with a new android device ( better hardware ) and iam very confused between 2 devices the Motorola Atrix 4g and the Sony Xperia Sola but i kinda like the Atrix because of this huge forum there is alot of Roms and stuff but i wanted u Atrix owners to help me explain some points
- i read here on xda that all the new Atrix devices well not be unlocked link here sooo is that true ?
- if i bought this device i think i'll unlock it after a couple weeks and if i wanted to know what isn't exactly working in the CM9 rom cuz it's my favorite and does toggling bluetooth and wifi force restart the device ( ohhh god i sufferd this issue with my wfs ) and does the HDMI port work with ICS based roms ? !!
- is there a webtop for ics roms ?
- in worst cases is CM7 fully working ? !! ( stable ) cuz i can't imagine my self stuck with the orginal rom
that's it for now, thank u guys in advance hope to to join u soon
The Sola and Atrix are both damn good phones, The Sola looks nice, has a good(similar to i9100)chipset, better camera, better screen and the Atrix has more functionality (TegraZone, webtop, docks, 1gb ram etc)
The Atrix also has a lot more development going on at the moment, compared to the Sola and the latest CM7.2 build runs perfectly on the Atrix.
But it's up to you.
Edit( whether it is "un-lockable" depends on where you buy it from, yes the newer ones aren't, but they still have the initial batches floating around)

Resolution of the screen is really nice but for me personally a little too high for a 4" screen.
But the main problem is the colours it produces. Blacks aren't completely black they have a slight brownish greyish look to them. The other colours in general look washed out. Doesn't bother me too much but when comparing to other phones the difference in colours is instantly noticeable.
The atrix hardware is nice. Will run anything you throw at it. We have a very nice stable cm7.2 rom
If I were you I would wait a little while longer to see if Motorola release official ICS for the atrix before buying one unless you don't mind sticking with gingerbread.

Well the screen is also smaller on the sola, and it has a full set of sub pixels as well as the bravia engine.
The Atrix has a pentile matrix, so even though there is more pixel density, the pentile matrix makes individual pixels more visible.
Well since you're buying in egypt, there probably is a chance your local store has the initial-release stock of the atrix. But there is no garuntee, I bought a second atrix (for a friend), here in New Zealand a few weeks ago and it was unlockable,
I personally haven't tried ICS or JB because im more interested in a working phone (LOL), I don't like having to toy around with things that only work half the time and/or not at all, thats why I try to stay away from the roms until they're stable.....But still, support the developers for their hard work, even if you aren't using their roms just yet (they all look promising).
there are a lot of things not working in the CM9/CM10 roms, that even the devs can't list them all, and a lot of functionality is software-based because there is no driver support for hardware until next month or so, when we get the official ICS from Moto.
The phone works great on CM7 if you're willing to buy it now.
Prefer to buy Galaxy Nexus, S2, Notes, etc... for most update ROM is already there.
if my Atirx will be broken, I Will buy another Atrix. This is one of the greates devices, fingerprint lock, webtop, and many more Especialy Tegra2 and 1GB RAM

okay your totally right the Galaxy nexus is a great phone but comparing the prices here where is live the atrix sells for 2000 EGP and the nexus for 3500 EGP so there is a huge difference that i can't afford right now and there is also a thing that i don't like about all the nexuses ( except the nexus one ) which is there is no SD Card ..... i can't really imagine my life without an SD Card
I'm considering the same 2 phones. Which phone did you buy, the Xperia Sola or the Atrix?
Atrix
the Atrix is still one of the best phones I have ever owned, and the accessories are great and probably much cheaper now
Like people have said before, cm7 works perfectly. But there is not gonna be any ics for this phone from motorola. The devs are working on jellybean right now. Epinter's cm10 is pretty much a daily driver with hw acceleration issues because of no drivers for kernel. Apart from that its a great rom.

Problem is that there will never be any official ICS from Motorola, and unless the Olympus ICS/JB kernel port is successful, it's likely there will never be any third party HW acceleration either. And yes, there is talk of Motorola releasing the code for the unfinished ICS kernel, but talk is one thing, but I wouldn't bet the farm on seeing it happen any more than I'd bet on a dead horse winning the Kentucky Derby.
Sure the device itself isn't bad, but the only support you will get for the device is dependent on a dwindling community. Honestly, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have just gotten something different, I would have ran away from the thing screaming like a little girl.

[Q] Slow Development?

I've been lurking the Desire X forum for some time now, and I'm getting my own DX in a few days. Something I've noticed is the slow development for this device, lack of S-OFF, and no official support from CM, AOKP and so on.
This is slightly worrying, since the device has already been out for about 6 months now. Is this too short of a period for development to pick up more quickly? Or is it just not as popular as other devices?
The DX is the only affordable dual core device I can get at the moment and I'm really hoping development will pick up soon.
PS - thumbs up to all the developers currently contributing to this device, keep up the great work :good:

PS - thumbs up to all the developers currently contributing to this device, keep up the great work :good:

You asked 2 questions:
1. Is this too short of a period for development to pick up more quickly?
No, its a long long time. Some flagship devices get all above you mentioned within a month. But mid-range phones are not so lucky. Browse the sony/samsung/lge MID-RANGE sets, and i repeat MID-RANGE, and you'll see that they are even handicapped than us. This phone is getting 4.1.1 officially and in my opinion have no reason not to get 4.2 as well. (5.0 will be a dream)
2. Or is it just not as popular as other devices?
See above. Its a mid-range device with satisfactory performance. The design and build makes it look costly and so our expectations rise. I dont deny that HTC have recently not been as consumer-friendly as they used to be, but thats that.

JB kernel sources dont explain the lack of interest dear.
The ICS kernel sources are out and ONLY ONE developer did something with it. Even if JB sources are revealed soon, it does not guarantee that more developers will come (and i mean AOSP developers).
But i hope u r right.
Not to be antagonistic but it's a pretty poor phone with a dearth of support from HTC to begin with. There won't be a surge of development, for a number of reasons.
I'm not even starting on this phone as I'm already sick of it and looking to sell.
You're better off with a flagship, popular phone if you want many roms. Ideally not a HTC. Sorry to be so negative.
Yes, but how do you explain tha for instance HTC Desire is no flagship but has so many Custom ROMs and official CM too... I think it also depends on support, literally speaking, how many people are using that brand of phone and how much is it favourite...
HTC Desire X
Sense Revolution +

HTC DESIRE WAS A FLAGSHIP. Make no mistakes about it. At its time of release, it was THE MOST POPULAR android device and from then on, it got SO many devs that still its going strong.
Just check some of the features which our 3-year newer device desire x doesnt have.
1. Multiple colored led lights. (4 +)
2. Digital compass
Plus these things which were awesome in 2010.
512MB ram AT THAT TIME 2010. Even now, 512 is not found on every phone.
AMOLED screen
GPS/FM/BT/WIFI all radio related sensors. We are still stuck on the same sensors in 2013. no nfc, no dual camera.
5MP camera. We still have the same MP sensor even though its much much better.
What i wanna say is, Desire X is not a flagship, so dont treat it like one. You spent less money so expect less.
Strictly speaking, for its price, its a very good phone IMHO.
Regards
i dont think it really matters whether a phone is mid range or high end all that matters is how famous the device and how much devs support it i have a galaxy mini not a flagship phone but intensely popular and it has unofficial cm10.1 til date running on a 600 mhz processor our desire x is way better and gives a better bang for buck than any htc phone :highfive::highfive:

btw I had lcd display (you mentioned amoled), it was so much fun when I flashed amoled rom
Just look at the HTC explorer, i sold mine at the time due to lack of development at the time (nothing but jaggyrom i think) but within a few months development was booming and now I'm kicking myself

The current owner of Jaggy rom aka danceoff also bought this phone! He will also start making roms after a week.
I have been in contact with 2 devs who are buying this phone. So we are soon going to have rapid development(I am also making cm roms and kernels for this phone)
I think the main reason for lack of development is that there are no current devices that possess the same soc thus new base has to be created from scratch and the work for older devices cant be used.Atis112 succeeded in doing that so i think development should increase in frequency for this device.
PS this is my opinion not sure its correct or not.Though its mainly based on my experience tinkering with my galaxy fit.
hopefully we have a rise in developers(though current number is healthy so wait for summers i guess).Cause All i need is a stable cm built and im happy:fingers-crossed:

DanceOff is cool. He's always in the OT...
Great points Dark Passenger.
Worth reiterating there's some great devs still here working away. I'm sure patience and support will be rewarding.
IMHO, the one and only HTC flagman and inspiration for all custom ROM makers is HTC HD2. Just take a look, how many custom roms on all the kinds of OS it has!!!!111 I had one since 2009, but I've decided to give it to wife, she likes it very much.

Personally, I find performance more important features. I think this goes for many other people that bought the DX as well, who wanted value for money. As you can see from my sig, I'm moving over from its predecessor, HTC Desire S. Take a look at the Development Index - it may have been a mid range HTC but there was a lot of development being done.

If by "this phone" you mean the Desire X, then this is very good news. I look forward to these developments. Looks like there may be more devs coming to the DX :good:

This is great news !!!
I'm also planning on getting this device within a few weeks !!!
I was a little hesitant on buying this phone due to lack of Activity and Deving [There was lot's of Activity and development going in my previous phone's thread i.e. Galaxy Ace ...]
But,
Now that many people are purchasing this phone and some Senior Dev's are coming , I guess this Forum will also have lot's of Activity !!!
I'll also start deving after this device gets Cm10 !!!

Don't get me wrong here
I thought the word deving is for
0 -> deving -> CM10
After there is CM10
CM10 -> modding/kanging -> various
So what neXusPRME and atis112 is doing now is deving
I'm pretty sure modding is still considered development
