i followed this easy root here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894
with not so easy instructions. i can build computers and know photoshop/lightroom in and out, so no dummy here. struggling, yes.
After i booted into the CWM and clicked "install zip from SD card" it just freezes on a screen with a tophat and a circular arrow underneath.
nowhere in the instructions say if the phone should be disconnected or not at the time, and it never says anything about the kernal having to be on an SD inside the phone.
Please help. Thanks in advance, and if anyone offers a service I will gladly paypal to get help.
Use the home button to select not the power button. Also the back button is back in this version of cwm.

It's not frozen, click either the home or the back softkeys on bottom of the
screen for it to go into the cwm menu.
the up/down is controlled by vol+ and vol- and the selection is controlled
by the HOME key. The back key takes you back to where you were before.
Good luck!
No need for paypal unless you are very RICH I charge A LOT but you can click on the big THANKS button
Thank you both much for the help. Thumbs up sent!
btw, can i update to 2.3.5? I have completed the root from the link but it is still at 2.3.4 and Samsung Kies no longer detects the phone.
thanks again

Rooting has nothing to do with the version of the rom we are using.
It's good to root if you ever want to download apps and games
from other sources besides the android market.
Also there are a lot of apps which require a rooted phone.
There is no official AT&T 2.3.5 roms for the i777 SGS2 phones yet.
The ones you see around here and on internet are actually test builds and all
of them have issues.
That's why we only see the Perception 2.3.5 custom rom by Designgears here.
The most downloaded custom rom here is the UnNamed 1.0.4 by gtg465x.
In my opinion it is the best custom rom currently available for our phones.
With the Perception custom rom the Touchwiz 4 launcher does not have the
really nice sorting feature in the drawer, and you cannot change the view from
grid to list either. There are other issues with the 2.3.5 roms too like wiFi that
some people have had a lot of issues with.
For best performance I would stick with the 2.3.4 custom roms for the time being.
As far as kies goes, its best to uninstall it and any usb drivers kies may have installed.
After it's uninstalled its best to reboot windows and install the new unified samsung drivers
which can be downloaded here: http://www.tofuchimp.com/WeGotMedia/search.php?q=Samsung mobile usb driver 4.40.7.0 download
Unplug the usb cable before installing this new usb driver.
Once installed, reboot the computer and then plug the usb cable into the phone.
Good Luck!
^SOLID advice!!
Thanks, I was about to get the cyanogen by random choice after not being able to find "the best" rom.
It says to install on SD. Do you think it'll be greatly affected if i installed on phone?

SD or sdcard or internal sd = phone memory
external sd = an actual sdcard CARD which we can add or remove.

Try turning off your virus scan before unziping superoneclick; on my computer it kept recognizing the rageagainstthecage file as a virus and deleting it.
hmmm still cant with my 959D and froyo
finally works, use super one click, unmount external AND INTERNAL sd cards

yup, worked for me too, thanks a lot
Worked for me too. Phone is SGH-T959D from Telus:
firmware 2.2
baseband T959TLJL3
kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #2
build number FROYO.TLJL3
The trick is you have to unmount both the external AND the internal card, otherwise it fails. I couldn't find a way to unmount the internal card using the phone menus, so I had to download a free app from the Market called Widgetsoid2.x. This app unmounts both. Then I ran latest version of SuperOneClick (I used 2.2) and it worked.
Of course I had to install the USB drivers first and I had to put the phone is USB debugging mode
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Hello, I have a Samsung Galaxy S SGH T959D and I need to unlock it, but I have no idea how to do that. I have been reading different forums and it says the phone needs to be ROOTED first before it can be unlocked, no idea what that is or how to do that, this is my first Android phone, so I'm a virgin when it comes to this stuff, can anyone help me. Thanks. (preferably in plain English)
i rooted it using superONEclick but its very picky about the rom you have
i was on stock 2.3.3 gingerbread
had to enable usb debugging on and connect usb/phone
Hi all 1st post here and it's already a question so I apologize, , I am pretty new this stuff and recently started messing with my firmware and having a play around. Now the issue I have is I cannot connect the phone to pc by usb at all. I have tried all the usual methods of switching data cables, hard reset, enabled/disabled debugging. The only thing that it does is charge the phone.
On a seperate note, I think my current version of android is corrupt as when i hold down the power button, the only option I get is power off, various other things are not quite right either and would prefer stock to this. The device is rooted using universal androot. If anyone could help me return to stock or change my firmware would be greatly appreciated. Please bare in mind that I am unable to use usb, so kies and odin are just not an option. Many thanks

what rom did you put onto it?
Try this one : http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/(release)-motafoca-2-0-9/
Many thanks for the reply, I was a little naive and just downloaded a random linked one Am I able to put the madteams on there just from sdcard?
If you mean install it from sdcard using clockworkmod?
Use this one : http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/(re-release)-motafoca-froyo-2-0-9-rom-clockworkmod-edition/
To be honest, I have been playing with something I know too little about and now i'm trying to fix my mess I have installed rom manager, and applied what i believe to be clockwork mod recovery supplied by rom manager, then added the linked file to my sdcard. When it tries to apply it as an update it says aborted as zip file is bad.
If i could use usb or odin to flash my phone things would be so much simpler, but as it stands I can't seem to do anything with just using the sdcard. I don't know if there is a complete idiots guide to this. But thanks to those who have tried to help so far.

I don't even get the dialog to connect by kies or mass storage. I plug my phone in and the only thing it does is charge. The computer doesn't even acknowledge there is a device connected, with that in mind i'm certain it is a problem with my phone. Possibly firmware related, or faulty usb phone port I would guess.
Which is why I really hope someone can come along and help with my previous problem of fixing things with sdcard only.

to flash:
1. download kies
2. download odin
3. download your files for the rom
4. put them all into odin
5. turn phone into download mode and connect to pc
6. wait for it to show up on odin
IF, your phone doesnt show up, try uninstalling kies, re-installing it, restarting your computer and try again
I can't use odin, kies, or mass storage. My phone simply won't accept that it is attached by usb, I tried the original samsung data cable, as well as another I purchased new the mount dialog won't open when I attach a usb with the usual option of kies/mass storage so I know it isn't my pc. Everything I have done has been by removing the sdcard and using a card reader to put files on, then back to my phone.
I tried all the linked files so far, tried renaming them to update.zip on my sdcard, when I boot back to recovery and try to update from sdcard it says bad file, or failed. Also tried extracting the files and updating again no good. If there is no other options to force new firmware to install from sdcard I guess it is a new phone time which I wasn't keen on.
Should be a rom.problem..flash other rom..if odin shows yellow light below com port in odin it means you are ready to go..flash another rom and see if it helps..but if yellow light doesnt display theb its data cable prob or usb port prob..

It may not have installed correctly which is how I managed to ruin my phone, but according to rom manager it did install I never got the chance to check tho as my phone is now dead and hoping to get it fixed under warranty.
you probably installed a version for another phone. If you can, boot your phone into download mode and install clockworkmod found here: http://www.madteam.co/forum/development/(development)-ltsecret-projectgt/
Then, hopefully your phone should be ok, but just to be sure, install the latest cyanogenmod (using clockworkmod).
Hope this helps
Hello, I am a newbie Android user and I have been exploring the greatness of the OS for few days now.
Just now I tried to update my firmware to 2.3.5 and followed instruction from a non-xda developer site and little did I know, it messed up my phone big time.
While I was loading all the files (CSC, tar, modem, etc), and I should've known better when the site told me to check the "re partition" box, but I was stupid enough to go along with it.
So Odin got stuck at re-writing the modem or something like that and I had to pull out the battery from the phone.
Now the phone turns on only in recovery mode and none of the recovery choices work, if I choose one it just shows a little green android with white bordered triangle with an orange exclamation mark in the middle.
I can still access the download mode by using conventional button pressing method, but my phone is NO LONGER RECOGNIZED through the USB so I cannot flash the old stock firmware...
Is there a fix for this? If anyone can help me resolve this issue I am willing to compensate very well in return...
Thank you so much for reading my convoluted troubled story, and I really hope to find some resolution in your wisdom.

Check this unbricker
android-roms.googlecode.com/files/DREAIMG-RC29.zip
Download DREAIMG-RC29.zip and unzip the file.
Reformat the SD card to FAT32 and copy the DREAIMG.nbh onto it.
Safely eject the SD card.
Put the SD card into your device.
Step 3: Wipe The Phone
Hold home and press the power button.
When you see the image of an ! mark, open your keyboard and press Alt + L if you cannot see any command options.
Do a factory reset by pressing Alt + W or just using the trackball.
When the reset is done, go ahead and hold the camera button and select the reboot system now option with your trackball.
Step 4: Flashing The Phone
Once the grey screen pops up (or the white screen if your phone was rooted with JesusFreke) it will ask you to hit a button to start installing the image…press that button. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROCCESS. It will take about 8-12 minutes.
When the image has completed the installation (it will say completed), go ahead and press the green, red, and menu buttons at the same time. The phone will reboot.
And your done! Your phone is now unbricked!.
If this helps u buy me a HTC sensation.

Ah I see. Could you please help me understand what you mean by "open keyboard?" I just don't see how I could open keyboard on my SGS2 when it isn't recognized by my computer... If you could clarify what you mean by that it will be really appreciated!
So from your information provided, you have a stock recovery and your phone is semi-bricked. You can still boot and your computer won't recognize your phone.
Do you have a jig? What firmware did you flash? You could use a jig to reset the flash counter on the phone and return it for warranty saying that Kies messed up while upgrading firmware. If you've flashed the KI3 with the new bootloader then the jig won't be able to clear the flash counter.
EDIT: Maybe an experienced senior member might come and look at this thread and provide some other solution. Do wait!
EDIT2: Try reinstalling Kies and the drivers. Don't give up just yet!

I don't think that the guide he posted is particularly for galaxy s2 because he also mentioned a trackball...
but if you can go the settings he mentioned you might find something and lead you.
And if you decide to bring the phone to samsung you might want to have a read at Intratechs Official firmware
thread in (Original Android Development)there you can find a bootloader that you can flash so you can use the jig to reset the counter
edit: wow I also failed to read that your computer can't recognise your phone
anymore....
Have you tried to delete the samsung drivers when you go to
your hardware settings?? and let windows find it's drivers again?
Not sure if this will help. I read somewhere someone else with their PC not really recognizing the phone. Someone else advised to unplug the phone and remove the battery then connect to PC insert battery and put it into download mode.
I could be wrong with the method. Its just from my memory.
Also this may make no difference but maybe removing the sim and SD card. Someone will probably call me stupid for suggesting that though.
I wouldn't try that unbrick method mate. That looks like it is an unroot for an old phone..possible the G1 (AKA HTC Dream).
Thanks for all the help... I have been trying to uninstall the driver and reinstall it but no luck. If I could just get the phone to be recognized I think I will be fine, but I just don't know what to do
Thank you for all the suggestions, please keep them coming!
EDIT: this is the guide I used that messed up my phone.. http://androidflip.com/install-andr...-samsung-galaxy-s2-gt-i9100-installing-guide/
EDIT: Tried to reinstall KIES, no luck. It's like there's nothing on the other side of the USB cord... Not even a sound when I plug the phone in...
If it had been via XDA the instructions are do not do what they are saying .
In Odin Select Re-Partition , Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time
In Odin select these files
For PIT select u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
BIG BIG NO to the above .
As usual some stuff ripped from XDA and some from elsewhere .
My suggestion would be one buy USB jig it hopefully will clear the rom counter and enter download mode .
two in recovery mode go to mounts and storage and format cache data dalvik system and sd card .
Clean phone with nothing on it .Flash stock firmware .

Thanks, I tried to do this but unfortunately the problem persists... What do you think the root of the problem is? I just dont' get it why it won't be recognized anymore.. I feel like I could easily get it to work if I could just get it to become recognized to flash stock firmware....

Hey guys, wondering if you can help me.
I got my sgs2 soon after release and got rid of all carrier info, rooted it, installed a rom and been using happily ever since.
However, about two weeks ago over on sammobile news of ics kernels appeared xxkp4 and xxkp8.
I downloaded and paid for chainfires excellent mobile odin, grabbed xxkp8 and flashed away.
At first everything seemed fine, but a couple of my favourite and most useful apps wouldn't work with ics. So, I decided to change the rom.
Hooked up the phone to a windows xp machine and the usb utility is just giving me a choice between mtp and ptp, both of which wont allow me to copy files between xp and the phone's sd card.
Under settings > wireless & networks> more > usb utilities, I can choose usb mass storage, yet when i select to turn on usb storage, it just doesn't register it clicks and nothing happens.
Additionally, even though i set all permissions when first installed, mobile odin won't load saying superuser access could not be acquired. So i go into superuser and indeed it shows zero apps with superuser access.
I am at a loss as to how to go about getting this xxkp8 off my phone given that the phone no longer wants to exchange files and folders with my pc?
Please give me a clue, even if its a nod to a thread which will help me, I am suffering from information overload trying to find what i need through the forum.
If any more info is required please don't hesitate to ask.
I will include the following info if it helps:
android 4.0.3
baseband 19100XXKE7
kernel 3.0 13 - 19100XXKP8 - CL42141
build IML74K
Have a look at the CM9 development thread. There are driver downloads (first post) available. MTP not working is a known problem. As a last resort flash a stock ROM through Odin and start again?
Many thanks for the heads up mate, trying to sift through the information on here is a proper challenge for one small of brain lol
appreciate the patience and the help!!
If you simply want to go back. Instead of flashing via Cwm. Flash via odin. I had similar problem. My mass storage would not mount but it paired with odin.

Lol, its not that easy as said by u, 'Will Try closing my eyes and walk in the midst of a Heavy Traffic and see what happens'.
Either replace ur screen (either by paying or warranty claim) if not take it to a nearest service center and see what best they can do for u
If you want the stuff from the card, remove it and use a card reader. If you want the stuff from the internal storage, this gets tricky....
Get your phone to a service center and specifically tell that they need to just replace the faulty screen. So no JB updates, motherboard replacement or wiping the device clean.

Really guys? Take it to a service centre? I already knew that.
I don't have the money to take it into a service centre. Phone is out of warranty.
Replacing screen costs money too. About $300 in Australia, may as well buy a new phone.
Actually if I boot into recovery the phone is already rooted etc it is that easy.
All i need to knwo is volume up down power, up, power etc.
Or there was some android app windows sdk where you simply mnt/sdcard etc while connected to USB.
What recovery is on there? If it's cwm non touch let me know and I'll give you the sequence of keys

I just installed the latest GGB compatible Siyah Kernel on top of it and thats it.
It is non touch. Not too many menus, maybe 6.

That sounds like a better idea. Mashing around blindly in recovery seems pretty risky to me, especially if you're not sure what version you have. Unfortunately I don't know the first thing about ABD either, sorry. Good luck.
I just plugged in the phone to samsung kies, and it detects it just fine, but it says to set the phone to USB samsung kies mode and it doesnt support this mode. ATM I am in USB debug mode.
Surely there is a progam that acceses the phone via debug mode?
OR even via Download mode?
I am giving this Android SDK a go, holy crap it is so complex. I installed some packages, double clicked on ABD under sdk>platform tools, and a command prompt window comes up, a bunch of text flies by in 1 second and it automatically closes..
What android version and are you windows or Mac?

Gotta say this community is just abysmal at handing out help.
To the dude above asking what android version. Read the OP before spending time asking a useless question. I said 2.36. And windows or mac...? Do you really think I would not find be willing to use either if there was a way to recover my data.
If anyone is interested here is how I solved my problem, this simplest method could not simply be mentioned here?
I turned my phone on. Let it boot. Then I plugged in the USB cable from the computer. The phone should register the connection either via vibrate or noise, and in "my computer" the drives show up but are inaccessible by windows explorer, or kies because USB debugging is On.
go to google play store via your browser, preferably chrome. search for a a program called My phone explorer. Select install. It should install it to your phone. Look in the description and install the PC side of the software on your PC.
Open "my phone explorer" on your pc and voilla should be able to sync
I only wish someone could tell me this instead of having to fluke it on my own
