[Q] titanium back up - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

good afternoon,
I'm going to install a new stock rom on my ace.
Which kind of back up I have to do before?
the total one - user apps + system data or just the user apps?
thanks for your help

I do a full backup most of the time
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App

For me because I switch roms I only select the user apps that I use across all roms.

user apps and data - unless your sticking with the same mod - then apps+sys and data.
Also suggest you freeze market updater unless you like the new market
I suggest you read the manual first because TB does a LOT more than backup a hell of a lot more
TB only works once a rom is installed - if you want to restore a rom complete after a system failure install clockworkmod 4.0.0.9 then chainfires CWM and create a nandroid back and place it on the SD. Then if something bad happens goto recovery and restore the nandroid backup from the SD.
Have fun.

by 'backups' do you mean apps/system files?
If so I have put a link to the Titanium Users guide (being careful what files you introduce via back up to your new rom.)
http://matrixrewriter.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=TB+-+User's+guide
6.1. How to restore your backups after installing a ROM (if you wiped your phone)
If you just formatted your SD card, don't forget to copy the "TitaniumBackup" folder (and possibly your license) back from your PC.
Download Titanium Backup from Market
If you intend to restore system data (eg: MMS/SMS) from a different phone/ROM, enable the "System data migration" option now.
Click the Backup/Restore tab
Click Menu (the button), Batch
Click "Restore all missing apps + system data
Reboot your phone
It's done ! The only thing you may have to adjust is usually your wallpaper/widgets.
Thnx for the help...I don't delete them but if I'm on like cherryblur and move to aura they stay fine but if I go from cm7 to aura they give me an old backup from when I used a regular blur rom and not my updated backup from cm7

Proceed to recovery and flash it a second time and it should work. It might have to do with the CWM version you were running earlier.
Cheers!
SuperROM is only for i9100G!! While CheckROM is only for i9100!! You need to reflash superROM! Or at least to restore a backup...

That means look under your battery. What does the label there say for model? If it says "GT-I9100G", then you have to be MUCH more selective on what you flash to your phone.

No you can't. That's also for I9100 ONLY.
Thanks to all for help..
I've got a question about changing ROMs also. I'm currently on LeoMar75 Rom Revolution v2.4 and I'd like to change to the newest CheckROM.
From reading the thread, the process is:
Titanium backup
CWM backup
Get into the CWM recovery
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Install the wipe version of this ROM
My questions:
1. What does a titanium backup do?
2. What does a CWM backup do?
3. Where are the backup files stored? Do I need to copy these backup files to my computer?
4. What do I do after I've installed the new ROM? How do I restore my backups?
5. What do the backups actually restore? Will I automatically get all my apps back? Will I keep my user data (e.g. text messages, whatsapp logs, high scores in games, photos, etc)?
I've looked around a lot but and I can see a lot of people saying these same steps but I can't seem to find a description of what they actually do
I appreciate your time, thanks guys!

Differences between CWM backup aka Nandroid backup and Titaium Backup
First of all , Nandroid Backup is NOT an app. You will have an option of a FULL backup of your phone as it is condition at time of backup using a BACKUP choice in ClockworkMod recovery. Your backup here is often called a Nandroid backup . All your phone's data, apps, settings, roms, kernel etc is FULLY 100 % backup, Under this ClockworkMod recovery you will also have option to RESTORE 100 % the phone status
Titanium Backup is an APP which requires phone to be rooted. You can use TB to backup all your apps and its associated data. You ONLY can use TB in a working phone . You can't restore anything from TB if your phone crashes and cannot be rebooted. TB does not backup your kernel/roms.

It backs up everything, it will basically cryogenically freeze your version of Android as it is for later use. So yeah, if you don't like ROM x you restore ROM y from nandroid
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developer app
2. To remove root you need flash stock firmware (I think)

1. nandroid backup is backup everything
2. yes you can, if don't want that custom rom, just restore the nandroid backup you make
A NANDroid backup does not include the EFS, however, and you will want to back up that up in case your IMEI ends up getting lost. (Grab kTool from the Play Store)
Also not included in a NANDroid backup is the modem and kernel. These don't require you to back them up yourselves, as you can find stock kernels on the Internet (and modified ones) as well as the modems, but it's worth noting that some unofficial ROMs do tend to flash these as a part of their install process

Music to my ears :thumbup::thumbup:
I use Nandroid backup as a method to save all my folder and apps layout ,
flash a new rom just format cache and system .
That gives me my layout plus the new rom works 99% of the time if upgrading to similar roms even moving from LF2 to LG8 .

Nandroid backups your system data cache and boot partition this means after restore you will get everything same as old times but you can't go back from aosp roms because they use mtd partition type but samsung roms use bml you have to flash stock rom from odin and then restore when you want to come back from aosp/cm based roms

same here, but seems to be different with the s3, but there might be some problem between different versions of cwm recovery, that might be the problem..if you backed up on touch say..then tried restoring from 5.c.x.x?

Downgrade to GB using CWM restore?

Had a very bad experience when i upgrade rooted GB to stock ICS using wifi (w/o pc connection). During the 1 week of using ICS, my s2 got tons of issues, ie, no app works properly, battery drain faster, consum more ram etc.. worst, could not root! Eventually brought to samsung svc ctr to restore a brand new GB.. root the GB again & working well till now..
However i really want to explore the latest JB roms, in case of the flashed rom got any issues, i want to know how to restore to GB (backuped using 'CWM app') using CWM restore or anything else?
Which likes using Ghost to backup/restore a setup windows sys..
Phone details
Android v.: 2.3.6
Baseband v.: i9100DXKL1
Kernel v.: 2.6.35.7-I9100DXKL3-CL814876 [email protected]#2
Build No.: GINGERBREAD.DXKL3
Rooted with Current kernal: CF-Root 5.0
Can any1 also kindly advise me what are the important things/steps i need to take note, when flash to JB rom? I dont want to mess up my lovely s2 again..
Thanks in advance!
1. Try to backup gb and then install ics stock rom on your phone with odin, you can find the guide on the forums somewhere (because there is no support for running gb and jb on the phone because of non kernel support for the both),
2. After you get your phone booting up root it with siyah kerneb by flashing it frue odin like flashing the stock rom,
3. Now install jb (i recomend you the jelly bam version by igio, awesome rom )
4. Now that done if you want to go back to gb you have to install gb stock rom yust like in odin.
5. Root the gb and install cwm kernel and you can get back to your rom.
JellyBam http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903162
So to your question NO you cant as i said the kernel does not support gb and ics/jb on the same device...
Click thanks if i helped you
And if i made a mistake please correct me!!!
Really appreciate ur explanation!

What a load of crap that other guy said.Just make a nand backup of your GB setup, then flash the JB rom/kernel.You can backup that if you want/or dont(if you dont youll lose option to restore JB).
I can alternate between GB/JB by just restoring nands anytime I want.

Nandroid Backup or nand backup - a Nandroid backup is essentially a complete snapshot of your phones operating system—application data, and all—that be restored via recovery. It’s always a good idea to keep a backup of a nice stable setup just in case of emergency so that u can restore the same using CWM recovery
so that it saves u all that time u need for dwnld'ng a firmware and flashing the same and setting up ur phone to its previous wrk'ng state, with all ur apps and its data
PS- u can use that CWM app (the App after rooting) to perform those actions
Eg.Im using XWKI4 with siyah v2.6.14 kernel.I go into cwm and make a nand backup.
I can then download say vanilla rootbox by bajee, and once everythings set up ok I then go into cwm again and make a nand of that.
2 minutes later I go into cwm and restore my GB backup and Im back on GB.
For your other question,I think the siyah GB kernel has cwm as an "app",but I dont think the vanilla rootbox kernel did.I changed the kernel to dorimanx but I went straight back to GB.
Anyway,I just use the 3 button combo to get into cwm.

Correct me if im wrong..
So as long as i already created a GB backup in my int sd card, & after which i flash a JB rom. If i want to switch back to GB, i just reboot to Recovery mode with up-home-power buttons & from there i can restore my previous GB (backup in int sd card). Is it correct?
In addition, regarding kernel..
I explored some rom & their steps of flashing, none mention about flashing kernel?
I know kernel is sth connecting hardware with OS (right?), then why flashing kernel is not included in the rom flashing steps? Is flashing another kernel necessary?
When flashing a kernel, must i connect to pc to do so, or simply copy kernel file into int sd card & flash it (using recovery mode?)?
Thanks for ur patience!
1.yeah,thats what I said
2.the roms come with the kernel, and some come with aroma installer which lets you choose various combinations eg. kernel/apps/launchers whilst you are installing the rom.
Anyway you can chop and change compatible kernels whenever you like.....same with modems.
People try different kernels for performance/battery life so its not compulsory.
You can use odin/mobile odin or cwm for flashing.
And its best to backup your efs folder when your rooted also and keep a copy on your pc.

What & where is efs folder? Is it containing the backuped roms?
IMEI.
just download hkctool off play store and use that.
Used 'CWM app' to backup into ext sd card; restore also using 'CWM app' w/o any issues.
However, when i reboot to recovery mode, i cannot restore as indicating 'file not found'.
My question is: whether the backup file must be inside int sd card instead of ext sd card?
Thanks!
It doesnt matter where it is.The restore option in cwm looks at your external card, and the other restore options further down look at your internal card.

yet how come 'file not found' when i tried to restore in Recovery Mode? headache...
It might be in your internal and the cwm is looking for it in external or in other direction that is looking in external and the backup is in internal you can look wit the explorer or something. Look for the clockworksmod folder or something. Mine is in the external sdcard. Try to move whole folder in internal maybe.

i have a fantastic answer for you...
if you flash a new custom rom and then you want to restore all the settings from the old one, you can go in Cwm mode > Backup and restore > Advanced restore > restore DATA...
in this way you restore only the app and the configuration of system...
i hope i help you!
so the app and the configuration from the old rom will be in the new rom ..??? .. wow! thank you for your answer!

Always make one before flashing.
Remember that full backups take a lot of space. Download titanium backup and backup user apps and their data, delete them and then make a nandroid backup. Takes less space and its a lot faster.
I curently have 2 backups. My stock ROM and a curently used custom ROM. Once my custom ROM is updated I delete the backup of the custom ROM, I update it, then make another Nandroid backup with the updated version that way it saves me a lot of space.

if you flash a new custom rom and then you want to restore all the settings from the old one, you can go in Cwm mode > Backup and restore > Advanced restore > restore DATA...
in this way you restore only the app and the configuration of system.

Use this with caution.
Its better to set you phone manually than to brick it due to lack of time, or doing it manually.
Stick with the basics, basics dont get your phone bricked. Trust me

I have restored data with no problem using Data only Nandroid backups for years .
But i always only restore data to a same build rom that is no restore of ICS to JB and no restore of KLP to JB .
On PC original factory rom + Nandroid copy of last known full working custom rom .
Worked on custom roms are backed up to ext sd card .
Worst problem i ever have is usually if i wipe something without thinking clear Nandroid backups and forget to update . Even then its only a stock rom Odin flash to start again .

I have restored data too. I haven't tried restoring data from CM to AOKP to TW, or vise-versa.. Or different Android version. Not knowing if it is a go, cant recommend it to somebody and then messing up their phone for not giving the correct info.
Keep it in mind buddy

In TiBu (Titanium Backup) just back up user apss (like facebook, twitter, games, apps downloaded through GooglePlay Store)
Run a batch backing up user apps and then from System>Apps uninstal all of them but TiBu. Just like that once you've returned from making the backup, open TiBu and select backups/restore tab in the top section again and press the menu/options softkey. Select Batch and then Restore all missing user apps.
No need to make a .zip file, not flashable through recovery.
