[Q] Hoping for feedback on a new droid device from Verizon - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I am currently using an HTC whitestone and discovered this community through it. After a couple of frustrating years with this device, it is finally upgrade time.
My options are:
HTC Incredible 2
HTC Thunderbolt
Motorola Bionic
I am a developer and looking for the most power and performance, which would automatically suggest the Bionic, except I also want a device with mature and stable ROM's available and a large dev base.
GPS is the second-most important thing to me, which is why I kept my whitestone after all this time.
Has the Bionic's bootloader situation been resolved? Would anyone recommend it over the two HTC's mentioned above?
If it was a decision purely between the Inc2 and TBolt, which would you opt for?
I'll be going to the Verizon store tomorrow to buy the upgrade so any comments or feedback would be awesome. Thanks!

Don't do it I personally would wait another month and check out the new Nexus before upgrading no unlocked boot loaders yet
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Yes but with the Nexus I'd be downgrading the camera and losing the hardware buttons. I'm a little hesitant of the new ICS/Android 4 too. I think I'll wait another year before making the move to that.
I really dig the Bionic, but only if there is a working permanent rooting/bootloader solution and some good stable ROM's. Otherwise it'll be a choice between the tbolt and inc2.
But do remember, I've been using a whitestone with WinMo 6.5 for 2 years.. any of these three devices are going to be a massive upgrade for me lol

Okay, I think think I'll go with the tbolt. The Bionic looks great but seems to be a mess to root currently. Thanks again for the suggestion, brossma1.

[Q] 4th Eris gone bad - what should my next phone be?

I am on my 4th replacement Eris (trackball issues, and charging port issues). It's mint, and I take good care of it, so it's not that I am abusing it by any means, but my charging/usb port is on its way out. I've had to exchange 2 others because of the well known trackball issues.
So, Verizon has offered me early upgrade pricing on any phone of my choice! Question is, which one is closest to my Eris (size) and feel. When the Eris came out, I admit, I liked the way it looked, and felt compare to the Droid 1.
Of course, I rooted it, since there is no way I could stand being stuck on 2.1, with Sense. I really want the Nexus S, but I'm on Verizon, and not able to move (company phone). I would prefer the most "google" experience, but if it's an HTC phone with Sense, I can live. I'll probably just root it anyway. So, here are my requirements:
* FAST!! (After having an Eris for so long, I yearn for speed!!)
* Most Vanilla Google like
* "smaller" form factor like the Eris
* Good dev community for rooting (like the Eris)
Actually, now that I think of it, my requirement for being Vanilla, is not really a requirement, since I can always root it
Here are some of the phones I have thought about:
* DINC (but, should I go for something even faster, or wait?)
* Samsung Facinate
* Droid 2 Global (don't really like the form factor, but 1.2Ghz is nice!!)
I don't really think there is much choice. Although I am a diehard Mac OS X guy (Mostly because it's Unix), the iPhone just doesn't do it for me anymore. I like Android widgets, and the notifications too much, and the iPhone sucks at those (or doesn't have it)
Any chance of the Nexus S coming to Verizon? I like that the Nexus phones are always on the bleeding edge of Android releases, which is what I really want the most
So, what does everyone recommend? Wait? Get a new phone now? Replace the Eris for the 5th time?
Can you wait out for the vzw Thunderbolt?
Personally I would get another Eris and wait for the new phones to come out. BTW next time, post questions like this in the Q&A or General sections.

J/K...I'd wait for the new LTE phones to come out before getting one. They just leaked that the LTE pricing will be the same 29.99 for unlimited.
dinc is too old now. almost at the end of its life and so is the droid x. Samsung has horrible support as you can see by kaos having to go over to their forums to help them get froyo and its near the end of its life. Most of the fast phones that verizon has have a EOL in march. The d2g is the same processor as the x and d2 but overclocked. i had a x for 29 days and hated it. and that thing ran all day at 1.35. If you can handle the 4.3" screen wait for the thunderbolt. My experience with the x and looking at the rest of verizons going ons has made me realize i am leaving them. I have determined that its time to move to a mobile carrier that has similar views that i do in how handsets should be ran. That is why i am switching to tmobile and getting the G2. Tmobile is owned by a german company and for some reason the Europeans seem to be more accepting of all things unix. They have a good relationship with google and they have released 4 vanilla pure android phones. no one else has released any that i can think of.
I would get the DINC but only if you can without having to use your upgrade.
Currently on my 7th one, nd verizon has yet to offer me this. Just get the iphone, much more reliable

track ball going out, screen unresponsive, phone restarting randomly... i'm about to be on my third.
The build quality was very uneven on the Eris. Most of the ones people are getting now have already failed in the past and will fail again. If you're on your first one like I am (over 12 months now) count yourself lucky and just ride it out. Unless things change I'll be changing carriers after this contract is up as it is anyway.
Do the verizon trade in credit thing. Eris is worth 132 to verizon. Then buy some used phone online (I recently got a mint droid for 130, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much faster it is over the eris and has a great dev community and super easy to root and is still supported by verizon. For now) and wait till the thunderbolt, bionic, x 2, droid 3, or the Inc 2 comes out and get that and use your promo pricing

Dangg. Whew I'm glad I did it last week haha.
Replace it with another Eris; then wait for the Thunderbolt (SVDO) or the Droid Bonic - or jump ship like me and just get an iPhone. *shrug* /2c
I only read your first post and haven't read anyone else's answers. IMHO, Either go for the Incredible or wait for the next HTC Android phone on Verizon, the Incredible's successor, whatever it will be. Shouldn't be too much longer, but I understand it's hard to be patient.

im keeping my eye on the bionic myself. wait it out just a little longer.

Have both X1 and X2. Which to keep!???

I recently acquired both an X and an X2. Have to keep one and sell the other. I just moved from the Incredible, which has awesome development, so I'm a little spoiled.
Seems that the X is a little further along the development cycle (makes sense), but I REALLY like the screen, CPU, and GPU of the X2.
Do I keep the X2 and hope for more development (really wanting CM7 or MIUI), or do I keep the X, which already has some pretty stable ROMs? I worry that many of the Devs are just going to bypass the X2 and move on to a more dev-friendly device or on to the Bionic or something.
Please help me decide which to hold on to!! Incidently, I don't have to sell one off for another week or two, so there is a little more time to see if CM7 can come out for the X2 I guess.
I don't see much happening with the x2 honestly. I'll be selling my x2 once the galaxy s2 arrives unless we get a break in development on this phone.

I Hate Ungrateful People, I Am So Happy And Appreciative For Everything Anyone Does ForThis Phone. I Try To Help Out By Either Providing New Information Or Helping Someone Figure Things Out So They Hold Onto The X2. This Device Definitely Needs Support To Sway Developers To Wanna Put Their Time In. Once Again Thank You To Everyone Who Has/Is Working On This To Make It Better For All.
its funny to me everyone keeps talking about switching from a new device to something even newer as if support for that will be any better every device takes time I'm sticking with x2 at least for another 5-6 months.

Guys, I'm completely new to both the X and the X2. I have no prior experience with either device, nor do I have a bias. I have read enough on all the various forums to see the hatred for one or both phones. Point is, I can only keep one of these bad boys. Like them both. Just hoping someone with more inside knowledge than myself can give me a better indication on future development potential.
From my fresh perspective on both of these phones, it is clear that the X has already had significant development (I love CM7 and MIUI Roms from my Incredible), and it seems like a gamble to hold onto the X2 because it may OR may not get to that point. Does this sound about right?? Again, not hating on either phone or community. This wasn't intended to be an "I'm moving on" thread. It's a "help me choose" thread. Thanks.

It does help some. It seems that one dev working on CM7 is needing some help though, and not getting it. That's what I'm reading into the posts anyway. No disrespect to the dev who's working on it. I just know that these things seem to require multiple devs working on teams. So if you can tell me definitively that CM7 will come, I'm a happy camper.

One Thing You Really Need To Understand There Is Nothing Definite With Developing. It Can Take Numerous Trial And Errors Before Done Or It May Never Happen At All.
we should all be happy that moto surprisingly did an awesome job with the GB update, it added so much polish that was lacking in previous builds and helped speed up our phones greatly. If you want MIUI so bad, there is a launcher that mimics MIUI ROM This phone has only been popular for like 2 months, that is NOT enough time for any development to happen lol so just get Rooted GB, Freeze Bloat, Supercharge this bad boy and if you want to run the MIUI Launcher and have one of the fastest phones on the market
It's really a no-brainer. The X2 is way above the X in performance. IMHO, it's the best phone that Verizon sells, unless you really must have 4G service. Both phones have the lousy Blur interface, but you can customize them, as you know, with aftermarket launchers and programs. Both phones have locked bootloaders, so not a lot of development.
There has recently been some increased development interest in the X2, however. Gingerbread (2.3.3) is the most recent OS, and there is now a pre-rooted version of Gingerbread readily available. As for ROMs, "Eclipse" is well liked and seems to be extremely well thought out. Most recent edition has done away with most of the Blur interface. More details here.
If you need to ask other peoples opinion on which phone you want.... don't pick the x2. Im tired of everyone whining. Don't buy just released gadgets if you can't handle bugs and lack of support. Wait! I have a great idea... sell both and buy an even newer phone that may or may not even be rooted yet. Yep that's a good plan.

Oh come on guys, this was by FAR the most useful reply I got
Seriously though, thanks for the input for those who actually took time to post something meaningful. I know the X2 is a great piece of hardware, but my rooted Incredible running AOSP was actually faster and more responsive than this thing is right now, so I guess I'm suffering from some withdrawl. I'll root, debloat, supercharge, etc and see how it goes. I'll probably hold on to the X2 and hope for the best because I'd hate to be kicking myself a month from now when CM7 and then MIUI get unleashed. Surely those two ROMs running on this hardware will perform better than my Incredible, not to mention better than the original X.
Of course, if development completely halts in a month then I'll probably just beat my head and cry for what might have been, had I kept the original X. Time will tell. I.....must.......be.........patient.............

WOW, well the people who are complaining and moaning about not seeing much happening are welcome to leave, nitroglycerine is doing great things with what hes got and CM7 will be a gateway, I'd stick with the X2, it's got tons of potential and is definitely a top of the line device but everything that needs to be done won't just happen overnight, I would suggest hanging in there.

Hey Droid Eris owners

As a former Eris owner, I just wanted to stop by and say hi. This was my first Android and I loved it.
I'd also like to advise you guys when you do update your phones, HTC has the best rom communities in most cases. HTC phones typically get the most rom development. If you love the Eris community (which is one of the best in my opinion) , you may want to consider sticking with HTC. With some Androids, they have a very limited selection of roms. coming from an Eris, that may leave you disappointed.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I went to the rezound, they have like 5 droid incredible devs and counting lol its great!
I think the LG Revolution only has 5 roms total if that and it's been out since last May. That's why I came back to let people know so they dont get something like that and regret it.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I counted at least 10 different roms for rezound not countin the aosp, cm9 wip(s)
I am thinking about replacing my Eris after I cracked the screen when it fell out of my pocket during a traffic stop (no one got a ticket). I hate contracts and don't want to to pay big money (over 150) on a phone. So that leaves me in the used phone arena.
I would want a phone with lots of support from this type of group and one with 4g speed. So my question is what would yall recommend? Or do I just bite the bullet and be locked in with Verizon for another two years?

Go to Craigslist and look for an Android. I.see the thunderbolt always sselling for around $200 used on there (little more than the 150 you want, but no 2 year contract). That will also give you a phone with a good rom development community. Trust me, it has one of the best rom.development communities of the 4g phones on Verizon.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Don't get.the LG.revolution. it only has one real rom. While it has an unlocked bootloader, there are phones out there.with locked bootloaders that have more roms developed for them.

Thanks for the info!
Just sold my two Erises on CL, coudln't have made it this long without gingershedbread from workshed. I went with Evo, another family member went with Optimus. I must say I have a hard time recommending any LG phone. The optimus is speedy but almost no support for it at all though there is a CM7 version that has been ported, thank goodness for that. But I agree with what has been said about htc phones and forums, lots of support. Good luck!
I decided to go with the HTC Thunderbolt. Now to figure out which Rom to flash it with. The even bigger question is do I give my Eris to my daughter or do I keep it to play with?
It was really tough replacing my Eris! : )
Again thanks to all who have contributated to the development of the roms. It is greatly appreciated.
The thunderbolt has plenty of roms to play with. Let your daughter experience the wonders of android.
I hope I helped you choose a phone that you will love and not one you will kick yourself in the ass everyday over (like I did with the LG revolution). While I like Motorola because of the battery life and the quality of production, HTC is where it's at for roms. My love for Android began with the Eris and I hope I can help anyone who still has it, pick an upgrade that they will also love.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I see your using the bionic. What is the rom situation like for that phone?
Sent from my ERIS using xda premium
It has good roms but small selection. I don't recommend it if you want to play with several different roms. If you want to stick to 1 or 2, its a good phone.
Many of the developers have moved on to the nexus. I suspect that development will pick up some when Motorola releases ICS. We have an alpha version coming along.
While it's a very good phone, it didn't live up to it's hype. It was released with some problems that it shouldn't have had after being delayed for as long as it was.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
The touchscreen was going bad in my Eris back in April. I guess it was losing it's sensitivity. I dealt with it for a few weeks but I was stuck in my contract until Nov. So I found a new digitizer online for $37 and a phone tear down and digitizer install video on youtube. For the tech savvy people like myself (I'm an engineer) it was the easiest and best way to get more life out of my Eris when I wasn't eligible for a phone upgrade and didn't want to pay full price for a new one.
Just another option for you.

I got the ReZound, also and I love it but not as much as my Eris which recently kicked the bucket I must return to fixing that Eris now!
Ta-ta for now my friends!
Got my Eris launch weekend in Nov 09. and had it rooted and running smooth which kept me from using my upgrade until I cracked my screen last month...so it was either a 99 asuriun deductible or a Rezound on sale for 99 online.. guess which choice I made?

Coming from razr and bionic.

Whats up guys I am coming from having 3 bionics and 1 razr all having problems, bionic 1 and 3 had a flashing screen issues and bionic 2 had a digitizer issue and razr 1 had a problem with the usb port on the phone. question, Am I making a mistake going to the rezound. I was sent the rezound on accident and told them that I would rather keep the rezound and would lose warranty on the phone but would obviously still have the warranty through the insurance.
It's (IMO) better than either of those phones, but it's outdated by flagship standards. Best screen from last year's flagships by far.

I'd keep the Rezound. It has better specs than the other phones and some of the developers on this phone are making real progress with Jelly Bean and AOSP development. With Motorola's locked bootloaders we will probably have a better update path going forward. Not sure how into flashing ROMs and stuff like that you are, though. Aside from those things, it's going to be personal preference of Sense versus MotoBLUR.
If you can get past the odd method of getting S-OFF root, then it's actually quite a good phone.
Having messed with both, I can easily say that the Rezound is the better phone. Though, this is merely my opinion.
I hated Sense at first, but then it grew on me (even moreso with Sense 4 ROMs). Motorola has gotten much better with their skins.
Hardware wise, the Bionic and Razr do not match the Rezound. The Rezound features a far better screen, removable battery (granted, so does the Bionic), and a much better camera and etc.
Motorola has really stepped up their game with updates, and I like that. And the build quality is very nice.
It comes down to preference, really.

Although, you don't really have to go s-off. It does make flashing easier.
I think you're making a great decision. There's a bit of a learning curve but it's not rezound specific, just a sign of the times as procedures are evolving for new HTC devices as well as other brands.
If you have any questions or find a guide that seems confusing send me a PM. I'll give you my google talk.

New to the Droid DNA.

Hey all, I'm new to the Droid DNA. So far I've been liking the experience and I have had the phone for 3 weeks. I understand that the development is being held back a little by the latest OTA but so far I have been liking the stock experience after disabling and hiding most of the apps I don't use and the Verizon apps. My last phone was a HTC Thunderbolt and I think I found a great successor. Hopefully soon we get a break through on development but as I wait for that I'm sure I will be content.

Lots of us have sent our DNA's to mobiletech to be jtag soffed instead of waiting but yea the phone is great stock.
There is a group thread that was just started you may want to check out.
I will definitely check out that thread. Luckily I like the stock experience enough to wait, unlike my thunderbolt which was lacking something. Until android gets a major update I'm sure I'll be ok!

I think the development is fine. It's the fact that a lot of people can't use it that makes it seem slow development wise.
