At first I wasn't going to but after reading all the stories about burnout I'm now running a black homescreen background with no dock (hate docks) and no notification area. Sparse grey icons I periodically rearrange. Overkill? are you guys running fancy desktops? have you experienced any burnout?

You dont need to do that man.....the only way you're going to get burnt images is if you left you're screen on full brightness and had a static image (in the same spot) for weeks and never turned you're screen off....do what you want with it, you bought the phone and spent the money, enjoy it. It will be fine!
I'm not worried about burn in, but I do run a solid black wallpaper to save on battery life. My widgets and icons are the same as they would be on any other phone though, so it probably only saves minimal battery. But I like the black background anyways

He's not talking about that. Read before you post.
OP, black wallpaper is great for reducing AMOLED battery life consumption. All of your icons decrease battery life, as well, but minimally. You can change the icon color of you want, it'll make a minimal difference.

I'm not sure what you read but he responded correctly....
OP its overkill man. I've never experienced any burn in on a phone. Just stay away from the white status bars because they will always be visible and with a long screen on time can sometimes cause problems.

I do have a bar on my captivates screen where the notification bar is. Only really noticeable on a white or light background while in a fullscreen app of course, and not at all terrible or distracting. Either way, I'll be making no effort on my s2 to prevent it from possibly happening again.
i've mad the opposite concession. I know i'll have sucky battery life but I just reduce game play, syncing etc. and have that beautiful screen up to full brightness all the time with a particularly colorful backround. It gets a ridiculous amount of attention every where i go. People litereally ask me about it all the time. Its awesome I love it , then again this is my first super amoled screen i can't help but be in awe.

Like it was mentioned above, black screens are better for AMOLED screens. A regular screen has to turn on pixels to show black. In an AMOLED screen, the pixels are just turned off to show black. Thus, the more black on your screen, the more power you're saving.

Love those icons! Where did you get it?
Black glass, sense glass, and probably some of the other glass themes for ADW.
I didn't buy this phone with this amazing screen to only use black backgrounds and gray icons!
The colors on this screen are simply amazing! Use it! If your screen gets burnt-in in two years, who cares? You have to enjoy what you have. In two years you probably feel worse about not having the Galaxy S4 than having minor burn-in problems somewhere in the screen...
And as far as the battery usage:
Most of the battery usage is not generated by the home screen. Really, who spends hours per day viewing their homescreen? Most of the usage comes from the system itself, phone calls, games, web browsing, etc.
If you generate 5 minutes extra battery life by having dark-gray icons, i'd be surprised!
The only thing that makes sense is changing to a solid black status bar.
And it takes way less than two years to burn in.

Hi,
I got my S2 a couple days back and was watching a movie in a completely darkroom and noticed that the screen wasn't truly black when the title were playing. I initially thought it was an issue with movie so I tested the screen with a pure black screen (*#0*#) and noticed that the screen glowing a tad lighter than black and I had several black patches on the screen. This is extremely annoying when using apps that have a lot of black or when watching movies. the dark patches and streak is also noticeable in the clock app in the dark grey patterned lower area. I have seen this issue mentioned in another post but there is no definitive answer as to whether this problem can be fixed or goes away after some usage. I would just like to know if I should send this in for replacement? What are my other options?
I also noticed that my 3 day old phone already had slight notification bar burn ins and even my google search widget seems to be burning in to the screen. Honestly I am extremely disappointed with these QC issues and this is my second unit as I had the first replaced for other screen issues.
I'd return it now for a NEW replacement, before the time expires. After a certain timeframe, only repair warranty most likely available, and that will probably take longer.
In some cases, it could be only 1 week.

ya I have a 30 day replacement offer so I guess I will be using that. Hope I'm lucky the third time around.
You may already know this, but;
If you send it back and your phone is rooted, custom rom etc, ensure you flash back stock firmware and get a usb jig to reset the samsung custom flash counter and remove warning triangle.

Edit/update
Im on Gingerbread 2.3.3 XWKF3 (India)
If someone could please try this simple test and let me know their results, I would be very grateful.
Test Procedure:
- Find a completely dark room (easier at night)
- goto phone keypad and dial *#0*#
- tap the button that says Black (Vibration)
- now look directly at the screen for a few seconds and let your eyes adjust
At this point do you see?
a) pure black (cannot distinguish btw bezel and screen),
b) an even mild glow, sort of like a backlight
c) a glow along with patches/blotches of pure black?
I see option (c). Could some of you pls do this test and let me know your results. This problem can also be seen, under the same dark conditions, if the clock app is opened. If you have the same problem I have, then you should see dark patches in the grey area.
I tried out before my last reply, but in dim (not dark) conditions, seemed ok.
Now tried as you suggested, and let my eyes adjust for a few second, I can see what your saying.
Maybe this its part of the super amloed + screen?
So in short , I'll take answer C

Maybe more users realise they have through same (or to a degree) , but i suppose if there is no noticeable difference during day to day use (including movies etc), i wouldn't even bother.

Well here's a photo to better demonstrate my issue. It is a little exaggerated by the camera but still pretty accurate. One can also see that the glow has a reddish tint. It was taken with a DSLR in hi res. You can see just how bad it is. Yes this is not that noticeable if the room isn't really dark but it's pretty damn bad in my room with all the lights out. And thats how I usually read at night. I wouldn't even mind an even glow but the splotches are unacceptable.
Ok your screen is clearly a QC fail. Go and exchange it ASAP. The screen does have a faint glow because it needs to be powered, but it should be a VERY faint and even glow perceptible only in pitch black conditions.

I would say that my "blobbing" is a little bit worse than what you see there.
Some are worse than others. On my first SGS2, an entire third of the screen was discolored. The second was worse- a fourth was discolored with lines across the screen. The third one, and the one I kept, only has two small spots on the left side.
If it bugs you, go to the store and get the best one they have.

How exactly do you check for it in the store? The fact that it is only noticeable in dark conditions is hard to check for.
I don't think I'm experiencing these black spotty colors. However...
My first SGS2 had some pixel problems. See image below. That line of pixel shows a higher contrast of whatever is displaying on that row of pixels. It only shows up at certain times when the videos or photos show some color or contrast threshold that activates these problem lines of pixels.
My second SGS2 has a soft (almost) black glow at the bottom on landscape (or left side at portrait) against a completely black background only noticeable at night (like when I'm in bed with the bedroom lights off). This doesn't bother me that much. I'm keeping it.

I don't think I understand what you are talking about on the second picture. When viewing a black background at night my whole screen has a somewhat grey glow to it. The blobs show up as solid black against the grey.
Hi guys, was wondering if anyone can make a Rom with ICS (with all the tweaks and goodies) and have a Black/Brown/Gold theme to it? I attached a picture off an iphone when you invert the colors, you get that color scheme and it looks nice. Also anyway for someone to make it so that for example if you have a wallpaper widget on your desktop, it could have like a live video clip playing on the widget in the backround as if it were a small sample clip of the latest video or pics? would be neat.

A few things...
It does look pretty good.
With LCD screens, blacks are the most battery hungry to display, so dark themes affect battery life to some extent.
Last... not to sound like a jerk... but this is a question/request. I am not sure it is best asked in development section.
oh sorry, i didnt know where else to ask developers if they could make this lol. For me the battery isnt that big a concern, never has been really lol. I use the web a lot throughout the day and ive never had any problems running low by end of day on my rezound, even if so, i would just recharge it love that black and brown with gold, hoping someone will make it

I understood the opposite to be true. That the pixel is turned off with black, anything else required power.

On any form of led screen (oled, amoled, samoled, samoled+, etc) blacks use less battery. Not sure about lcd though. And gold would really clash with the phone's hardware. It's black and red with silver accents. We an aosp black and red theme to make our phones sexy.
On these types of screens (LCD), black requires the most power because the pixel isn't actually off, its obscurring the light from the backlight, which requires more energy than displaying white. Only on old CRT type displays was black actually equal to 'off' and thus used less power. I think LED displays require no back lighting, so the same is probably true.
**oops read LCD not led, my bad
It's only noticeable on black or really dark backgrounds but does everyone else's home button bleed a bit of light into the screen or just mine? I'll see if I can snap a pic tomorrow.
Yupp... Once an led brightness mod is created it should be better.

you can also download an app from the market that test your screen for dead pixels and it helps find light-bleed as well. I believe it's called Screen test, just type that in the play store and you'll find it.

You have 30 days to do whatever you want with it.
I had light bleed on my first EVO LTE. The light bleed is most apparent when the button lights are on, the screen backlight is at its dimmest setting, and the screen is black. A great way to test is to install the flash-the-brain.com FlashLight app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.flashLight) and swipe down to set it to the dimmest setting. A picture of my first phone and the replacement are below (this was a long exposure in a completely dark room, so it didn't look quite so bad in real life):
I have it also, i didn't always notice it but definitely there at times... must be when the lights are on the buttons like ahecht pointed out

Maybe the nav bar is transparent and it still shows but without the buttons cause the outline looks the same and not even degraded I'm not that good at looking at those tiny details
it must be what bolillo siad ... i cant imagine how it would be possible to get a burn in in just 3 days
LCD screens aren't particularly prone to burn in so getting it in three days sounds like a very faulty screen. Of the six LCD devices I've owned, zero have had any form of burn in.
However, of the two AMOLED devices I've owned, both had burn in. My Nexus 6 had it after three days.
I'm getting bad burn in now on my G5 as well, didn't exhibit this behavior for the first week - both navbar and notification bar. I'm thinking we may have faulty screens, as all my prior phones took at least a year to get to a point where they exhibit this behavior. I don't leave my device screen on and have it only at 40% brightness. You can test by loading a full black image (Google "burn in test image").
Doesn't appear to be a whole lot of others with this issue.
I didn't really believe it but I downloaded the "amoled burn-in fixer" and on the test screen you can faintly see the navbar. I'm pretty disappointed.
If this LCD screen really is suffering burn in after just a few days, it must be one Hell of a faulty screen.
Just downloaded the app too and see the same issue exhibited, although when I take a picture and look at it there is no buttons visible. No burn in in my opinion.
To test if it was actually the nav bar just drawing a shadow i downloaded the app and checked and then i moved the icons and checked again and yes there is a slight ghosting issue kinda like a burn in but i only noticed it in that app so although i now know it's there i don't think it will bother me
It's definitely there, I just used the image from the gallery because it was most visible there. Since I posted this, the ghosting has gone away slightly, and still nothing from the status bar shows this. I hope it doesn't get too bad.

I would swap it if it's there using a white image in the gallery, because on mine, on a white image in the gallery I have no ghosting whatsoever and my eyes are 20/20 so to speak and I change mobiles every 3 months due to being picky.
Just adding to the discussion, but I have it as well. Never really noticed it until I watched netflix, and it is really visible then. I've had mine for 4 weeks now and I hate to see what it will look like in a couple more! Think I might call Verizon and see if I can get it replaced.

I'll give it a try, but I'm just surprised it happened so quickly. I could see if I left the screen on for hours straight, but my daily average is around 2 hours SOT throughout the whole day. Have the screen off at night and while charging. Not very heavy use and it still happened.
It's because the nav bar is seemingly set to a different brightness than rest of display.
No matter how dim display gets, nav bar is bright AF.
I bet that stupid 700+ nit mode does it, so in sunshine is gonna make it worse.
I see very faint lines for the nav bar icons. Have had phone for 3 weeks.
Will seek replacement when Nexus is released and sell to buy that.
