Hello all, I have some questions hopefully someone can help me with. First of all, I'd like to say I'm not a complete newb, or idiot. I have a inc2 which I have rooted and modified myself to my liking based on the stock ota Rom after trying many custom roms. I have a custom kernel set up, a daemon installed, I'm underclocked and undervolted per my settings and govs. I have read threw this forum a lot, I ordered this phone for my wife, should be here in the next few days, I'm excited as I will take it over for a few days playing with it. I have had a Samsung moment before also that I rooted, though long ago. My questions are, obviously, this bootloader is not locked, correct? On my HTC, I s offer and rooted, if I want to upgrade to the newest ota, I just wait for a dev to deox, zip align, and pre root it, then I flash that Rom in clockwork via zip file. On this phone, I should update first, before I root? If Verizon releases a ota, can I just update my phone as if I weren't rooted an retain root and everything, if not, how do I get it? You guys speak of a modem, is that the same as what HTC guys refer to as the radio, and does it need to be flashed seperately as I have to now, or is it included in Samsung roms? Is there any recovery, even the stock one, that can be used to flash and backup that isn't actually on the SD card and not the phone, in case somethin goes wrong with my card I will still be able to get into recovery? Is the fascinate officially on gingerbread? Can I just flash roms through recovery, or do most of them.require this odin thing? What is voodoo? I gather its something to do with a kernel, can it be used on a stock rooted 2.3 Rom "if there is such a thing"? I'm just a newb to this phone who can't wait to play with a new toy for a while, just unfamiliar with terminology and how things work on Samsung phones now. Should I just use some one click root method to obtain root then use the stock recovery (or custom if anyone knows one that can be installed to phone not SD) to flash files and kernels? If Verizon pushes a new ota after I do this will it try and screw me like on my inc 2? Thanks in advance for any help.

You don't actually have to root the phone. Just flash the rooted Rom of your choice through odin, and then use odin again to flash cwm (if you're using TW roms).
There's no official Gb for the fascinate as of yet, but there are a couple of Gb roms ported from the Mesmerize. Look them up in the forums. Never use the phone button in odin, always pda
By the time Verizon pushes an update somebody will already have it rooted, Su, deodexed, and ready for use. In any case, you can always go back to a completely stock version in less than 10min

I stayed up half the night last night pouring over these and other forums, I have decided I want something like your setup, I know what the PW thing in your signature is, as that's what I want, what are those other things? I guess I'm gonna put the vodoo kernel on there too. And o yeah, I can just take my completely stock phone, odin the PW Rom, and bam, I'm rooted? Do I need to install a gingerbread bootloader first? You can just grab the Odin file for PWGB /w modem and flash that, then flash a CWM file in before starting up the phone so it takes....and you are done. I suggest you start off with a stock kernel(included in the odin file) before you move on to other kernels. It will help you see the differences between the kernels more clearly, which to me are marginal at best...for the time being anyway.

Thanks so much man, so if I do it that way, cwm will be on my phone memory, not SD card, correct? Also, what about that gingerbread bootloader I read about, do I need that for anything?

Don't worry about the boot loader, it'll be in the PWGB odin file.
TKSGB 9-27 is the kernel by comradesven
Adrenalineshot 9. 5 is the speed tweak
Honey comb 2. 02is the theme.
Everything you need is in the development section
I believe cwm is always in phone memory (not 100 per sure though)

Laurenop is spot on in his posts...everything you need is included in the pwgb.tar except cwm. Thats why I always recomend new fascinate users to start with this rom. it's easy to install with no hiccups. Prime example is a couple threads down, a new user is trying to flash miui...instead of being patient, learning, doing lots of reading, he starts getting flash happy. By the time I get back on to help him he has impatiently skipped thru provided directions and soft bricks his phone lol... then wants to be spoon fed everything because he is in panic mode since it's not even his phone. Im glad you have taken the time and read up, I have no doubt you will enjoy the fassy! Welcome aboard!!
Thanks guys, I believe that does it for me, the thing I was talking bout as far as cwm bein on SD card was because I read on this forum somewhere it was on there not the phones memory, that's why Rom manager asks you to verify it or somethin, thanks for bein patient with me, now time to get my feet wet, the more I learn the more I help also, I'm not just a leech, I love helping others so you guys time and efforts were not wasted. Don't even attempt using Rom manager. For all intent and purposes is useless on TW roms

I rarely use it on the inc 2, does the fassy come with a recovery and can I just use it to flash and backup stuff instead of clockwork anyways?

Is bootstrap recovery the same as clockwork recovery? Are they one and the same?
Also I'm on kernal 2.3.4 do I have to do anything special if I want to load a 2.3.5 rom?
Sorry I'm new to playing around with motorola phones.
I thought they were the same when I first started hacking my phone. But it turns out they are not the same.
As for updating your phone to 2.3.5, if you are on stock 2.3.4, all you need to do is root your phone, install bootstrap recovery and flash the 2.3.5 ROM using bootstrap recovery.
There is a nice guide someone put together in the dev. Section.

Basically, yes - those recoveries a almost the same. They are both used in the same way, which is to backup/restore, wipe data and flash a ROM. So there's no real difference.
As for the 2.3.4 kernel. SOME people can get away with flashing a 2.3.5 based ROM on their 2.3.4, others can't. Either way, I'd recommend just updating to 2.3.5 to safe. Plus (to me), 2.3.5 seems smoother and faster.
To Update to 2.3.5, just download the update.zip from here: http://www.multiupload.com/0ZT7FTOW0R
This is just the update file, so all you need to do is flash that, but I won't get into much about that.

Ok so I'm currently on Molten 2.2 wich is a 2.3.4 romand was looking at liberty rom wich is 2.3.5 rom. So all I would need to do is just clear the needed data and flash it like any other rom?
The reason for asking about if it was clockwork was because in one of the roms the instructions says to use clockwork and I never saw a like to clockwork in the dev section

U don't need to root to install 2.3.5
It is signed by moto so we can flash in stock recovery
(actually that's how you SHOULD FLASH 2.3.5)
And our BSR is a hacked/ported cwm
To update to 2.3.5 you WILL need to be STOCK (you CAN be rooted but it will take away root when u flash it....just root again with zergrush...)

Just so you know, Liberty is a 2.3.4 rom. Have a look at the OP in that thread. If you're on Molten, just wipe data and cache and you should be set.
I'm curious if there are big benifits to rooting and custom roms on the AT&t Atrix. I've had a Captivate and GSII and have always loved the speed increase and custimization. With the Atrix seeming so much more risky, are the same benefits there? I want to improve my wife's atrix. Stock is laggy and just boring. Should I take the dive and work on her Atrix? Thanks.

I'm currently on Neutrino's ROM and there is nothing to compare to the stock ROM.
So light, so fast... A new Atrix !
Don't forget to backup the stock ROM right after you install the recovery, after that, there is no risk, you can try all you want.

Yes the benefits ARE there! I know what you mean coming from a Captivate, that thing was slow before mods and such! My Atrix saw a huge improvement with CM7. There is no comparison in boot time, its so fast. Everything else seems to be faster and smoother on CM7 for me than the Blur based ROMs I tried.
It's not any riskier on the atrix, you just need to follow the proper instructions.

As for just following the instructions, I'm a little nervous that I'm not fully understanding what I've read. Using the "noob guide" post, this is what I've gotten so far, so please correct me if I am wrong and jump in doing something dumb. I think my wife is running 4.5.91 Firmware
1) there is some discussion of custum sbf using rsd lite to load them. This doesn't sound like the first step since it seems like I need to unlock and root the phone first. Wrong?
2) use the automated script or flash an sbf w/root and unlock in the method mention in step 1. My hopes would be that the auto script would work as it sounds more user friendly.
3) uses Rommanager to install a "better" cwm.
4) flash a nandriod backup in current state
5) now I'm set to flash any rom.zip from cwm. And flash away to test variuis roms. Jus t never to. A version prior to 4.5.91.

Hi, I successfully flashed my T-mobile Vibrant about twelve months ago to a custom 2.2 Froyo rom (Trigger 3.2 Final). It's a great rom and EVERYTHING works. However lately I've read rave things said about newer roms such as ICS passion. It's been a while and I'm still a noobie at this so my question is:
What is the easiest way to get to ICS passion from my current custom Froyo rom ? Thanks ~ Chris

Its very easy to get ICS running on your vibe. There may be various ways to proceed. I ll give you what I did (AFTER failing for 5-6 times )
Odin back to stock (It may be not necessary. But I started from the beginning which is better AFAIK )
Then stored ICS ROM (ICZen which in my case) and update.zip (CWM) on internal SD
then flashed GB Bootloaders (It also may/ may not necessary. But I did it b/c I already had many failed attempts)
Then flashed CM7 first
After that flashed ICS on top of it
Worked at last for me
NOTE: Please read relevant instructions provided by ROMs b/c flashing one may differ from flashing another.

And I would suggest staying away from Passion. It is based on 4.0.3 and there was a pretty significant code upgread when ICS went to 4.0.4.
IIRC, Passion is the last ROM that still uses 4.0.3 and is probably why it is dead now (but for some reason lives in infamy on YouTube and Google Search).

mmm... I see a few pitfalls ahead.
Background info from me is that I can't use Odin on my Linux computer. Never really got into Heimdall. I flashed my first rom by downloading the rom zip file and put it on my phone's internal sd card then let clockwork do the rest, ie nandroid backup and flash the rom from the update zip. I'd like to do the same again.
Ok, it's my understanding that anything above 2.2 needs the GB bootloader so the first step is to install that over my Trigger rom. I think Trigger would still run with the GB bootloader at that stage. Next download an update zip of a rom of my choice, put it on my phone's sd, then flash it with Clockwork.
Seems to me that should work or am I missing something I wonder ?
You can flash the GB bootloader. Its backward compatible so it will work with any ROM currently available.
Download the .zip of the ROM you want, and any Gapps if applicable. Then just follow the instructions on page 1 of the ROM (OP).
The usual would be Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Clear Cache, Clear Dalvik. Flash ROM, flash Gapps, restart. The instructions will tell you all you need to know.
If something goes wrong, give us a shout. That's what we're here for.

I have CM7 currently running on my X2 and would like to go back to the stock ROM. I already searched the forums, "HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2" was the closest topic I could find, but this unroots and locks the bootloader if I understand correctly. I would like to just know if there is a way to go back to stock without locking the bootloader and unrooting. Also, if I wanted to switch to another ROM right now instead of stock, how would I do that since I'm on CM7? I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm not that confident in what I'm doing, I've only rooted once and locked once and somehow managed to get CM7 on my phone.
So my questions are: How do I go back to stock ROM without unrooting or locking the bootloader?
How do I change the ROM to another custom ROM?
So confused. Your answers are appreciated!

first , our bootloader has always been locked. i doubt this will ever change.
second, in order to install another ROM, just make sure it is for 2.3.4, and follow the instructions on the thread.
to get back to stock, find the EZsbf iso image, burn it onto a disk, and save yourself some time trying to learn how to use RSDlite. with the disk, sbf-ing is pretty straight forward, with step by step on-screen instructions.

But, didn't we have to unlock the bootloader for the X2? I just rooted my Nexus 7 and I had to unlock the bootloader before I rooted it
So what happens? Does the phone get unrooted?

So the process of changing a ROM is SBFing back to stock (unrooting), rerooting, and then flashing the ROM? There's no way to jump from custom ROM to custom ROM? To change, you have to SBF to factory restore every time? This seems like a lot more work than it has to be. Isn;t there an easier way?
One last question, to SBF back to factory, do you have to get a .zip for the stock apps like I did for CM7?

you dont need to sbf, unless you are planning on flashing eclipse 2.3
then use 2.3.5 sbf

use only roms made for DX2

if you are on cm7, any of the roms on THIS LIST ONLY will work. as LONG as they are for 2.3.4 . make sure it says 2.3.4. you dont have to sbf to flash a rom that is intended for 2.3.4 THIS LIST : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728456

This phone is complicated. The bootloader is not unlocked. Even though we have root and custom ROMs, the bootloader remains locked. This is why a lot of the ROMs that are based on CM9 or CM10 will have a good amount of bugs. Most still function good enough for a daily driver though. Even though we have CM9 and CM10 which is Android 4.0+, the kernel is still 2.3.4. This is the main reason anything based on 4.0 and above have issues. I hope that cleared some stuff up about the bootloader.
Next, like others have said, you can flash from ROM to ROM like any other phone as long as you are on Android 2.3.4. The only exception is Eclipse, which requires you to be on 2.3.5. But also, CM10 has a bug in the recovery where it prevents you from flashing a ROM over it. So if you decide to use CM10, you wont be able to flash back to CM9, CM7, PA, etc. or even flash an update to CM10 if or when it comes. Your best bet in this case is to backup a CM7 or CM9 or PA or whatever ROM other than CM10 so that you can go back from CM10 without doing an SBF. And again, like others have said, every time you SBF, you lose root. But its easy to quickly root it again.
I tried to explain this the best I could. Like I said, this phone is complicated. The devs have done the best they coud at keeping the DX2 up to date though.
