Is bootstrap recovery the same as clockwork recovery? Are they one and the same?
Also I'm on kernal 2.3.4 do I have to do anything special if I want to load a 2.3.5 rom?
Sorry I'm new to playing around with motorola phones.
I thought they were the same when I first started hacking my phone. But it turns out they are not the same.
As for updating your phone to 2.3.5, if you are on stock 2.3.4, all you need to do is root your phone, install bootstrap recovery and flash the 2.3.5 ROM using bootstrap recovery.
There is a nice guide someone put together in the dev. Section.

Basically, yes - those recoveries a almost the same. They are both used in the same way, which is to backup/restore, wipe data and flash a ROM. So there's no real difference.
As for the 2.3.4 kernel. SOME people can get away with flashing a 2.3.5 based ROM on their 2.3.4, others can't. Either way, I'd recommend just updating to 2.3.5 to safe. Plus (to me), 2.3.5 seems smoother and faster.

This is just the update file, so all you need to do is flash that, but I won't get into much about that.

Ok so I'm currently on Molten 2.2 wich is a 2.3.4 romand was looking at liberty rom wich is 2.3.5 rom. So all I would need to do is just clear the needed data and flash it like any other rom?
The reason for asking about if it was clockwork was because in one of the roms the instructions says to use clockwork and I never saw a like to clockwork in the dev section

U don't need to root to install 2.3.5
It is signed by moto so we can flash in stock recovery
(actually that's how you SHOULD FLASH 2.3.5)
And our BSR is a hacked/ported cwm
To update to 2.3.5 you WILL need to be STOCK (you CAN be rooted but it will take away root when u flash it....just root again with zergrush...)

Just so you know, Liberty is a 2.3.4 rom. Have a look at the OP in that thread. If you're on Molten, just wipe data and cache and you should be set.

I have an Atrix 4G (Bootloader unlocked and Rooted), now; most treads that I have read are not clear enough to what exactly Gingerblur 4.5 is, if it is a new Rom that would install and replace Gingerbread 2.3.4 or if you have to have some form of Factory Rom installed (Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.) for Gingerblur to install on top of it. With this said; do I need to keep whatever Rom I have now or I need to wipe the phone clean? or Gingerblur would install regardeless?.
Please if somebody could clarify this.

GingerBlur is a pseudo-rom. Try CM7 or Aura, real roms. They will wipe your phone clear during installation.
Hehe isn't it kinda simple to see how old something is by looking at the posted date? Either way I've been messing around trying to get this rom working on my phone again just for fun and I forgot what it looked like. And I finally got it. Lol. Alright so I'm completely new to all the droid rooting and what not and I've been wanting to upgrade the eclipse v .7 ROM to the latest version which require you to upgrade the kernel from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. So my problem I have no clue what so ever on how to upgrade the kernel. I've read a few posts on upgrading but they just don't seem to make sense to me.

The How-to SBF I linked you to is a very simple one to follow. MN-Shadow done a great job with his but may be overwhelming for someone with little to no knowledge of what they're doing.
Keep this REF Thread bookmarked. Booked does a nice job of keeping it updated. A lot can be found in many of those links if one takes the time to read through some of them.

That quote is from the Eclipse 1.3 thread in the very first post, or OP...
So first you sbf, then after its on 2.3.4, root it with Pete's one click root. Then install the bsr (our hacked up clockwork mod) and flash eclipse with it.

The only way to upgrade kernel for x2 is via sbf or OTA.
follow the links xodus provides and u will be just fine....don't be afraid...its not as it looks

You defintely want to upgrade to 2.3.4....this was the best thing that ever happened to my X2....I was only days away from giving up on this phone when the leak hit,now Im loving it......
I would also suggest making a stock nano backup of your stock rom for 2.3.4 it might save you from another sbf if things go wrong. Then you can restore your stock back up instead of doing a sbf. Just a thought.
There was even a unreleased 2.3.5 update, and ROM's are most likely heading in that direction very soon. Nitro, who created the Eclipse ROM, asked his followers on Twitter if they would like to see a release on 2.3.5.

I saw this thread and was wondering if it was possible for me to just boot into bootstrap and flash 2.3.5 and install Eclipse 2.0.2 without having to SPF back to complete stock unrooted 2.3.4? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Edit: I also read somewhere that ROM manager does not work correctly with the DX2? If that is the case, what is the best alternative to this?

You must follow that thread to a T if you want to be on eclipse 2.02 or else it will not work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412729 same thread in post #3. Follow it and enjoy. If you try your own thing it will not work. A lot of hard work and a couple of days to figure out this method and it is the only way I got on 2.02 and loving it

There really is no alternative to rom manager for what it does. You HAVE to use bootstrap recovery

If your running the STOCK 2.3.4, then you do NOT need to SBF to a fresh version. This is whether your rooted or not. You'll only need to SBF to stock 2.3.4 if you installed a custom ROM on, like Molten, Liberty, etc.
Personally, I would recommend SBF'ing - but that's just because I like a fresh, clean start with these things. Eitherway, it'll work perfectly fine.
As for getting to 2.3.5, it's recommend that you use the "Android Recovery" that comes with it to flash the update. Once your on 2.3.5 you'll need to reroot and install BSR to get the custom ROM on.

Do NOT use ota root keeper if u ever wanna think about a custom Tom on the 2.3.5 build.. update to 2.3.5 wont work if u deleted any bloatware

BUT
For people who are just trying to follow the directions for the ROM install, they will end up having issues, because no where in the ROM install instructions, for any ROM we have, does it mention deleting SU backup made by root keeper. So if they try to just flash a ROM after rooting w/ root keeper, they will get an "installation aborted error line 294" & if they aren't able to restore a backup before rebooting then it's just going to be sbf time anyways lol.
If you know what you are doing tho and have read into it and found what you need to do of using root keeper to gain root, then yes, go for it, but the "average" user here is going to have no idea why they keep getting installation aborted, when they could just use zergrush and be all good to go

As it is, if I have to go to 2.3.5, I hold off rooting until AFTER I've updated to 2.3.5. No need to root if I'm sbfing to 2.3.4 and updating to 2.3.5. The root is only needed when I'm ready to install BSR and flash a custom ROM.
This is what I do:
SBF to 2.3.4
Apply 2.3.5 update
Root
Install BSR
Flash 2.3.5 custom ROM
Done
To me, Rootkeeper just seems to cause more hassles and it's just easier to root after I'm done updating to 2.3.5. No need to root at the 2.3.4 level.
Of course, if you are already rooted at 2.3.4 and want to update to 2.3.5, I can see that, but Rootkeeper has been proven to cause issues and it just creates more work to avoid those issues.

Hi, I successfully flashed my T-mobile Vibrant about twelve months ago to a custom 2.2 Froyo rom (Trigger 3.2 Final). It's a great rom and EVERYTHING works. However lately I've read rave things said about newer roms such as ICS passion. It's been a while and I'm still a noobie at this so my question is:
What is the easiest way to get to ICS passion from my current custom Froyo rom ? Thanks ~ Chris

Its very easy to get ICS running on your vibe. There may be various ways to proceed. I ll give you what I did (AFTER failing for 5-6 times )
Odin back to stock (It may be not necessary. But I started from the beginning which is better AFAIK )
Then stored ICS ROM (ICZen which in my case) and update.zip (CWM) on internal SD
then flashed GB Bootloaders (It also may/ may not necessary. But I did it b/c I already had many failed attempts)
Then flashed CM7 first
After that flashed ICS on top of it
Worked at last for me
NOTE: Please read relevant instructions provided by ROMs b/c flashing one may differ from flashing another.

And I would suggest staying away from Passion. It is based on 4.0.3 and there was a pretty significant code upgread when ICS went to 4.0.4.
IIRC, Passion is the last ROM that still uses 4.0.3 and is probably why it is dead now (but for some reason lives in infamy on YouTube and Google Search).
Haarsh's way works just fine but here is another method as another option too.

mmm... I see a few pitfalls ahead.
Background info from me is that I can't use Odin on my Linux computer. Never really got into Heimdall. I flashed my first rom by downloading the rom zip file and put it on my phone's internal sd card then let clockwork do the rest, ie nandroid backup and flash the rom from the update zip. I'd like to do the same again.
Ok, it's my understanding that anything above 2.2 needs the GB bootloader so the first step is to install that over my Trigger rom. I think Trigger would still run with the GB bootloader at that stage. Next download an update zip of a rom of my choice, put it on my phone's sd, then flash it with Clockwork.
Seems to me that should work or am I missing something I wonder ?
You can flash the GB bootloader. Its backward compatible so it will work with any ROM currently available.
Download the .zip of the ROM you want, and any Gapps if applicable. Then just follow the instructions on page 1 of the ROM (OP).
The usual would be Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Clear Cache, Clear Dalvik. Flash ROM, flash Gapps, restart. The instructions will tell you all you need to know.
If something goes wrong, give us a shout. That's what we're here for.

I have CM7 currently running on my X2 and would like to go back to the stock ROM. I already searched the forums, "HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2" was the closest topic I could find, but this unroots and locks the bootloader if I understand correctly. I would like to just know if there is a way to go back to stock without locking the bootloader and unrooting. Also, if I wanted to switch to another ROM right now instead of stock, how would I do that since I'm on CM7? I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm not that confident in what I'm doing, I've only rooted once and locked once and somehow managed to get CM7 on my phone.
So my questions are: How do I go back to stock ROM without unrooting or locking the bootloader?
How do I change the ROM to another custom ROM?

first , our bootloader has always been locked. i doubt this will ever change.
second, in order to install another ROM, just make sure it is for 2.3.4, and follow the instructions on the thread.
to get back to stock, find the EZsbf iso image, burn it onto a disk, and save yourself some time trying to learn how to use RSDlite. with the disk, sbf-ing is pretty straight forward, with step by step on-screen instructions.

But, didn't we have to unlock the bootloader for the X2? I just rooted my Nexus 7 and I had to unlock the bootloader before I rooted it
So what happens? Does the phone get unrooted?

So the process of changing a ROM is SBFing back to stock (unrooting), rerooting, and then flashing the ROM? There's no way to jump from custom ROM to custom ROM? To change, you have to SBF to factory restore every time? This seems like a lot more work than it has to be. Isn;t there an easier way?
One last question, to SBF back to factory, do you have to get a .zip for the stock apps like I did for CM7?

Wait, which question were you answering? I'm confused. I wanted to know how to get back to stock ROM, SBFing I'm assuming.
How can I jump from custom ROM to custom ROM. Wait, is that what you were answering? So I dont have to SBF if I have CM7 and I want another custom ROM? Just install from bootstrap recovery? Also, are all ROMS compatible with all phones? Because, I wa looking to get PARANOIDANDROID on my X2 because it looks cool, or is there limits?

yes, you don't have to sbf, if you are going to install a rom
there a couple of different bootstraps
stock bsr, and cm7 bsr, most of the roms require cm7 bsr

if you are on cm7, any of the roms on THIS LIST ONLY will work. as LONG as they are for 2.3.4 . make sure it says 2.3.4. you dont have to sbf to flash a rom that is intended for 2.3.4 THIS LIST : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728456

This phone is complicated. The bootloader is not unlocked. Even though we have root and custom ROMs, the bootloader remains locked. This is why a lot of the ROMs that are based on CM9 or CM10 will have a good amount of bugs. Most still function good enough for a daily driver though. Even though we have CM9 and CM10 which is Android 4.0+, the kernel is still 2.3.4. This is the main reason anything based on 4.0 and above have issues. I hope that cleared some stuff up about the bootloader.
Next, like others have said, you can flash from ROM to ROM like any other phone as long as you are on Android 2.3.4. The only exception is Eclipse, which requires you to be on 2.3.5. But also, CM10 has a bug in the recovery where it prevents you from flashing a ROM over it. So if you decide to use CM10, you wont be able to flash back to CM9, CM7, PA, etc. or even flash an update to CM10 if or when it comes. Your best bet in this case is to backup a CM7 or CM9 or PA or whatever ROM other than CM10 so that you can go back from CM10 without doing an SBF. And again, like others have said, every time you SBF, you lose root. But its easy to quickly root it again.
I tried to explain this the best I could. Like I said, this phone is complicated. The devs have done the best they coud at keeping the DX2 up to date though.
