Update:
The Xperia Ray does currently not support Android Open Accessory. See post #3 for details.
---------------------- Old Post -------------------------
Short version:
Does the Xperia Ray support Andriod Open Accessory?
Long version:
I have been looking for an Android phone to hook up to my Arduino ADK ([arduino-homepage]/en/Main/ArduinoBoardADK), and have more or less set my heart on the Xperia Ray.
However, I cannot seem to find confirmation whether or not the Ray supports Android Open Accessory. According to: ([official android developer page]/guide/topics/usb/adk.html) it is required that the device runs at least 2.3.4, which the Ray (and other Xperia handsets) should recently have been updated to. But the same website also states that: "Accessory mode is ultimately dependent on the device's hardware and not all devices will support accessory mode".
I hope someone can help me clarify whether the Ray supports Android Open Accessory, as it is pretty much a deal breaker for me if it does not.
Btw, sorry for the weird 'links', but as a new user I am not allowed to link to external websites. I hope the syntax is understandable
Follow-up
Just a quick follow-up. My deadline passed and I did not find out whether the Ray supports ADK or not, so I ended up taking a different path in my project.
@mods: This thread can be closed or left open if the question is deemed generally relevant. I will not be checking back regularly from now on.
Answer from SE
Inspired by xkcd_com/979/ I thought it appropriate to post an update, as another effort into answering my original question has paid of
The answer is that the Ray currently does not support Android Open Accessory:
"We don't have support for this in the current software but we are planning to add this in our coming platforms."
Source: talk.sonyericsson_com/message/131166#131166
From the answer my personal guess that there might be chance that it will support it as of the announced ICS update in March. But I should stress that I really am just guessing.

MINI PRO seems to have Cypress TrueTouch GEn3 PSoc, that can support more than 2 touchpoint.
I explain more about what should we do to get it work in post 7.
come helping us and We sure can do it.
Thx Shok' xD
can u put it in frand' in french ? xD
there is a real chance to activate MT in changing just the kernel ?
that will be nice someone with more knowledge than me (i don't understand anything about drivers ) can put his hands dirty for us >_<
would be nice actually then i can play some of them HD games which need multi touch
clearpad 2000 is only on mini and don't know what is the solution for mini pro
Great work......can this work on 2.1???

I don't know if this will help but...
The solution on mini pro seems to be made by cypress
As seen here:

http://www.phonewreck.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/X10BD12.jpg
yes I found It yesterday too,
diferencies is synaptic/google's prototype driver allow DT but cypress's ctma300 prototype driver just allow single touch, don't have any kind of MT supported.
but in fact, Mini Pro seems to have and Full MT controller (cypress truetouch gen 3).
so there is 1-3 step to get multitouh work on it :
1-change driver by patching or modifying kernel
2-maybe patch Runtimes, libraries and framework if actual versions don't support MT (depend of what does SE developpers)
3-maybe change cypress PSoc firmware if actual don't support multitouch
the paths and files that maybe will interest us :
/sys/bus/serio/
/system/etc/ts_fw_update.sh
/system/etc/firmware/cy8_truetouch_jtouch.hex
/system/etc/firmware/cy8_truetouch_tpk.hex
maybe an custom ROM over actual kernel (customised) is the best way to got it work until bootloader is cracked, but it's not that simple to do it.
everyone can help, we all waiting for you, yes you.
So, the digitizer is capable of handling even more than 2-point multitouch?
Unfortunately, I'm not a dev, so I can't help out with the drivers...
Just thought I could give some light to the situation, I happened to bump on that teardown before reading your thread...
So, is waiting for someone to tweak the kernel all we can do now?
normaly true touch gen 3 is natively "multipoint capable" except if SE tweaked the firmware and remove the feature.
To improve the driver may be the hardest part of the work.
modifying kernel by "insmod" is quite easy but may be Insufficient for what we attempte to do.
Cracking the Bootloader is the best way so we can put our own kernel version, tweaked as we want.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sony Ericsson...
Actually MT may be enabled after all on X10 Mini/Pro because it was stated after it was announced by SE on twitter or something that the X10 will receive 'pinch-zoom'
but SE don't tell anything about mini/pro,before that they said putting MT on mini/pro will decrease user experience beacause of smaller screen size, maybe they thinks peoples will stay on the SE home which not allow anything, by the way making our own Driver will ensure that we can have multitouch or modifiying the firmware will permit us to add some features like new gestures or many other things I, If it's possible peoples will found for what.
EDIT : pinch to zoom is the best for Dualtouch, but we have a Full multitouch screen no limited to 2 fingers
What about if actual drivers support MT but it is disabled in a config file? Maybe we should start searching there before much more complicated driver replacement. =)

If that were true we would only get dualtouch at most, I believe....
Just like in the big x10... shokmah, is it true that our screens support multitouch? I mean, 10 finger multitouch? Just like the iphone? Oo that would be awesome!!! I'll study this brutally if that's true....
Sent from my E10i using XDA App
yes absolutely true, but I don't know how much fingers , but sure more that 2 .
Driver actually don't support any kind of multitouch, you can found sources released by SE and it just support 1 finger, so this is really the first thing to Do.
Not bootloader but Recovery
Hey this thread really is exciting knowing that mini/pro CAN actually support MT, although i think i read somewhere that mini can only support 2 fingers, either way is better than just 1 XD, mostly for emulators, aaaany way, member zdzihu posted a recovery method for flashing custom roms on mini/pro
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878426
hope the devs can make MT work
interesting

dont forget though that this recovery is not a recovery as we understand them on sensibly made devices (cheers sony......) there is still no custom kernel ability as i gather and STILL no custom roms other than the unstable build for x10i... iv been following these threads very closely and am more than willing to help you guys to figure out a way to achieve MT. if any code source is needed to be pulled and put to you let me know. also would looking at files from a mini/pro on 1.6 then comparing with files from 2.1 updated phones as maybe this could show areas of interest more clearly??? i am new to the idea of development and such but just an idea. fresh minds=fresh ideas right?? praying for a functional sony ericsson phone soon lmao
Hey there again
There are now custom roms and a tutorial made by svprm to make them, i tried it and it works, is an easy way to root the latest firmware update and it works with xrecovery, also with bin4ry flashtool you can flash different files from firmwares that includes the kernel.sin and system.sin of sony's updates, so my idea is that maybe kernel.sin could be decrypted and modified so that the device works with multitouch the same way system.sin is decrypted to make custom roms, so just a thought for devs that know how to work at kernel level maybe it works this way
I have no idea what iam doing, but i found "Protoype drivers" for CY8CTMA300

Hope it can help someone

Ok, I have looked this up as many ways as I possibly could and to no avail.
I am pretty sure the info I am looking for is out there, I am just having the worst time accessing it.
What I would like to know is why certain devices run on certain OS's.
is it just one factor or multiple factors? I suspect the latter[?]
and if so, what factors primarily play a role in deciding what OS goes on what device?
I know what I am asking really serves no purpose to most, but I am one of those who likes to know as much as possible.
much thanks in advance and please do forgive me for the huge lapse
The 1st factor is the device manufacturer. A clear example: SE says that Xperia X8 doesn't support versions above 2.1, so it didn't release actualizations. But now, we have even ICS on X8
The 2nd factor is the availability of drivers for the desired Android version (the drivers can come from a oficial ROM, or from the chipset manufacturer), and/or the coders interested in the device.
For many devices (specially low-end devices) this is the most important factor.

While this is true another factor is the popularity of the device. Why would anyone waste time on developing for a device that no one is interested in? It also depends on the value of the device. Its normal that the high-end ones will receive updates before the mid-range devices. But as the guy above said for xperia the same is with my LG. We also made a half functional ICS and the only big problem is the screen which works only 50%

Sony is the only Android phone brand I haven't tried yet, but I'm ready to jump as I like how Sony unlocks bootloader and updates their phones and I like their camera sensors.
I do have a few questions which couldn't be addressed after my visits to pdadb.net and sony's own web-site which hopefully current Xperia P owners can clarify for me, so in no apparent order:
1. Does Xperia P use the sim or the micro-sim?
2. Does the FM radio work on any of the leaked ICS builds for Xperia P?
3. Is the Sony's camera app same as the stock android app or does it make use of the sensor features allowing me to shoot HDR photos and maybe more?
4. How bright is the charging/notification light at night (I've read the topic it can be disabled, but I'm wondering how bright it is if I left it on)?
5. Has anyone been able to link to GLONASS satellites with the built-in chip? I've found contradicting reports that Xperia P chip should support GLONASS, but I'd like to be sure.
6. Do the Sony's own GB/ICS roms include UI in all languages or are they limited by the region?
7. Is the Sony "scratch-resistant" glass actually a Gorilla glass?
8. Is the Sony bloatware in any way useful if you haven't used the Sony media services before and have no intention of paying for them?
Thanks!

1) MicroSIM
2) What leaked ICS builds? If you can link me to it please.
3) It has more features, but no HDR
4) After my HTC Desire (that could light up half the room), the Xperia S doesn't bother me at all. Since to be the same LEDs, so it should be fine.
5) Not sure on that, it's an ST-Ericsson U8500, check the specs
6) All LTR languages, like any Android builds
7) No, but it's good enough for me not to care
8) The non uninstallable part is quite useful if you like Sony stuff like Timescape
Thanks for replies.
2 -- I thought there would have been leaks for Xperia P ICS by now, I must have been mistaken.
5 -- Thanks for letting me know the exact chip, but still it says that support for GLONASS *can* be enabled, doesn't say if Sony has actually implemented it. I guess I'll find out sooner or later.
OK, I have two more questions.
9. Warranty page at Sony's web-site says that I need to bring it to the service centre in the country of purchase and the phone must have been purchased from the authorized reseller. I intend to get the phone on ebay as it's cheapest and 4-6 months a year I spend almost half the world away from where I live. Has anyone had an incident where they needed to get the phone fixed outside of country of purchase?
10. I've read online that the 1080p video made by the Xperia P camera is actually upscaled 720p video which is bumming me out as a kick-ass camera a must have for me. If anyone can provide me with the links where I can read up more on the Xperia P video shooting I'd be grateful.

5 - from my quick look it seems to be on
9 - that's the standard warranty claim, not much you can do about it
10 - not sure about that, but seems unlikely
10 -- well, some swedish web-site claimed that and they posted a video on youtube. I don't have an eye to tell upscaled 720p video from the true 1080p, so I'm not sure.
I do have a question about the camera tho. I've been reading comparison between the Xperia S and SGSIII cameras and while the Sammy has the HDR setting in the camera app, the Sony doesn't. The images taken by Sony phone were much more vivid and colourful: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-vs-Sony-Xperia-S_id3048/page/3
Is that maybe because they use some sort of the HDR equivalent all the time?

Probably because Samsung can't make good cameras.
Hey guys,
I just read an article on a dutch electronics website (tweakers) that Google would make a 'nexus rom' for the xperia S. They would build it from the ground up and Sony will help google with providing closed source files (drivers, etc) so they can use that as well.
Google wants to do this to develop a stock AOSP version of android!
What are the potential benefits for Xperia play? Is there a possibility that the touchpad framework would go open source?
Also, please correct me if some of this info is wrong, as you guys probably know, the interwebz isn't always right...

Is this true? if so I'm getting an Xperia S!
I could see this helping the PLAY to an extent, but not as far as the Gamepad and Touchpads are concerned. Unless devs continue to port the touchpad libs from GB.
After having read the memo, it's going to be a pre-alpha thing for possibly longer than the lifespan of the phone itself. If you read it, he says that it won't be a daily driver for a very long time, especially with the way they'll be implementing the changes (i.e. slowly). The only thing that it seems like this would help is laying the foundation for future phones, to make AOSP development more fluid.
i have heard that Sailfish os is being built for sony X right? So when will it release....im so exciting....

Mate, check this Link for further information.
If you're a fan of Jolla (a mobile platform that's part Linux, part Android and loosely based on Nokia's MeeGo project), good news. The company has announced it will be releasing an official version of its Sailfish operating system for a number of Sony Xperia handsets. The news came from the firm's press event at MWC this morning, and adds a big-name brand to the currently mixed list of devices that the plucky (persistent?) mobile software has officially been ported to.
The first device to work with Sailfish, or rather, the first handset to be shown running it at MWC, is the Xperia X. Jolla says that there will be more compatible models, but the X is what it chose to show it off. Of course, Sailfish is technically available on many devices already, if you're willing to work with an unofficial port, but this time Jolla's partnered with Sony and its Open Device Platform for better compatibility.
Despite Jolla showing Sailfish on a working handset here in Barcelona, it seems there are still a few kinks to iron out. A representative told me features like "double tap" (to wake the device) aren't working yet, and support for 64-bit devices isn't as comprehensive as it is for 32-bit models (if you're into custom software, you'll likely know which yours is).
It's always nice to see alternative operating systems finding their way to mainstream phones, and seeing a Sony Xperia X running something other that the default Android certainly makes it a little bit more eye catching. I tried it for a few minutes and could see that the basic navigation was working no problem. But mostly, if you're into Jolla (which enjoys a steadfastly loyal community), then this is above all a good sign that Jolla's still committed to what it's doing.

If you want the official version, you'll still have to wait though. Jolla says it won't be out until late spring/early summer.

I'll have to make my rom quick enough for people to try
No one on xx device will know me but I'm festa20 and can't get on my account. I did team Xperia roms was a long time ago but with the lack of support for this device I'm guna have a dig around with some stuff see what I can make
