MIUI 110281 Glitch-V12
When I use RomManager to go into recovery the phone uses ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.8 (orange color) . And I can't do anything with this. If I select anything I just get the little top-hat
When I use the reboot menu to go into recovery I get the Glitch Kernel - CWM-based Recovery v4.0.1.4. This one works great! I would like to only have the Glitch Recovery if possible.
When I use the 3 finger method I get CwM Voodoo LagFix Recovery v2.5.1.x I flashed this with Odin a while back. I get a host of errors regarding mount. To get any where I have to 'apply sdcard:update.zip' which of corse takes me to ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.8 and I have the same mount errors...but I am able to select menu items.
Questions:
Is it possible to have the phone only use the Glitch CwM recovery regardless of recovery method?
How can I get the latest CwM recovery to replace the older CwM Voodoo Lagfix?
Is this normal or do I need to take my phone to a psychiatric hospital?
This is completely normal. MTD roms use a different recovery and just leave the old orange one on there. It doesn't work at all, gives the errors you have seen. Nobody really knows how to make the 3-finger thing go into the right recovery. Just use rom manager or whatever to get the right one.
Got it. Glad I am not the only one! Thanks for the answer
From what I have been able to figure out the 3-finger recover is what ever you flash with ODIN.. I'm kinda new so I cant point you to the right files, but an ODIN flashable recovery is what you want

No. Not at all. He either needs to reboot to recovery with the reboot options aka holding the power button or using adb reboot recovery. If he flashes an mtd recovery with odin. His phone wont get passed recovery and have to start from scratch.

Everything's been smooth so far in regards to my vibrant modification but I noticed something today that might cause problems in the future
Im running stock rom with kingxkernel 3 and ryans oclf
I can get into clockwork recovery through rom manager without a problem (that's how I've been doing it) but if I go into recovery mode using the hardware keys it brings me to the stock recovery..any suggestions? ??? I know in the very beginning I had to choose reinstall packages and then it showed up but I was afraid to do that again before asking in case it screws up my phone
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
clockwork recovery doesn't replace stock recovery on the vibrant.
If you manually enter recover, you have to do the "reinstall packages" part in the stock recovery which will then load the clockwork recovery.
Oh okay thanks for the reply!

yes, you still need the clockworkmod recovery file (aka update.zip) in order to load clockworkmod recovery.
OK, so it has been a while since I have had to flash recoveries etc... Anyway, I Odin'ed back to stock today because I had to go to the Verizon store to talk about my replacement phone so I wanted to have it unrooted. Anyway, now I am trying to get CM7 back on for the time being but I can't get in to CWM. I tried pushing the cwm_recovery_all tar file via ODIN and when I do the three finger boot, it still brings me to the stock recovery and when I hit apply update.zip it fails.
What the heck am I doing wrong? I figured I could just get recovery on there and not have to worry about "rooting" since all the ROM's have that built in anyway.
Any help is appreciated!
Nevermind, I think I figured it out
For those of you that don't know, you have to flash a custom kernel before letting the phone boot after flashing CWM, since the stock kernel will overwrite it on boot

Nope, all you have to do is leave the battery out and as soon as ODIN passes and resets the phone, unplug the phone from the PC so it can't reboot. Then just use the 3 button method to get in to recovery.
Overall it is pretty simple. Here were my steps to get back to CM7 from 100% stock ED04:
1) Push cwr_recovery_3_30_fix (or something like that) tar file in ODIN wit hthe battery pulled
2) Let ODIN finish and say RESET, then PASSED and pull the USB cable out so the phone can't reboot.
2a) Put battery back in
3) Once in red recovery, flash jt's cwm4 fix zip in CM7 thread
4) Flash CM7
5) Flash gapps
6) Profit
I didn't have to flash any custom kernels or anything.

I'm not trying to be a jerk so don't take this the wrong way, but kevin is right..it is the kernel that re-writes recovery on boot.
The way you are doing it, jt has a kernel included with the rom and that kernel Is whats making your recovery stick when you flash the rom. if you were to odin recovery on Stock phone and just flash a rom w/o a kernel and try to get to recovery again it would be the original stock recovery.
Don't get me wrong what you did is correct, I just want to make sure if you have to do this again, you don't have problems, it is the kernel that is what prevents the stock recovery from coming back.

My point is that I was able to boot in to red recovery (2.5.1.x) BEFORE flashing any custom kernel. I understand that CM7 has a kernel built in, but I was able to boot in to both the red recovery and jt's cwm 4 fix (4.0.1.0) before flashing any ROMs/Kernels. I wasn't even rooted (flashing CM7 is what rooted me).
After re-reading what he wrote, the way he says it is correct. I must have read it wrong the first time. So I apologize for saying "Nope." For some reason I read it as if he was saying I had to flash a custom kernel before being able to boot in to any recovery. He is just saying that you can't let the phone fully boot after pushed the recovery (which is what I ended up doing in my steps).
Sorry for the confusion.
No problem...glad you didn't take offense I'm just nearly thinking of all the noobs that are just getting into this kind if stuff and when they read the thread they might be misinformed...
that being said I've been on cm7 for a while and I know not to flash with anything other than the included recovery, I can confirm power button menu gets you to the new blue recovery but if you three finger salute it (done on accident just out of habit) you will get to an older recovery! In my case the old red one....Weird having both on the phone simultaneously, but it's no prob as long as we only use the new recovery to flash anything.

used oden to flash CWM. now i cant boot into android, it just keeps kicking me into CWM recovery.
anyone see this? any suggestions? would a wipe fix it?
did you flash a rom if so which one?
no ROMs, simply just tried flashing CWM via Odin
may i ask why 2.3.5?
what were you trying to do?
i am still able to get into Download mode to flash files via Odin, so i dont think all is lost. but, still just stuck in recovery. when i try to reboot it just takes me right back into recovery. i may have flashed an incorrect version of CWM which could be the cause of this problem. if that was the case, any ideas as to how i can get back into a proper boot?

I was trying to flash CWM so i could flash a custom ROM. Had this phone forever and was just looking to try out some ROMs out there.
As long as you odin cwm none of your os is really touched.
try the cwm 4 fixed for cm7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...2&d=1311907538
Now when you reboot your device the stock kernel will over right the cwm.
also make sure you put the odin file in the PDA section.
So basically flash the new cwm and try booting into normal that should get you back where you started from. 100% stock.
that link didnt work. tried searching for the thread without any luck
for some reason it truncated the link with a '...' and it thinks that is part of the hyperlink

thanks.. so i flashed this via odin. same problem. i start the phone. the samsung logo comes up. it disappears for a second. then it comes back up and kicks me into recovery.
weird right? any suggestions
ok then what is your endgame?
Now before you said you flashed just the CWM, may i ask why...if you did not intend to flash a rom? were you going to flash a Kernel or obtain root?
Perhaps you should try this
Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278838
It is a custom kernel.
Now Flash CWM with odin
Put battery back in [dont touch power button yet]
Hold down BOTH volume and Power all at once * Dont let go until you see Samsung Logo.
[should still be plugged into pc via usb]
You will boot into CWM
using the volume up and down-Scroll down to Mounts and storage [select it by hitting the power button]
Then scroll to Mout USB storage
~now you should be able to see your SDCard as storage on your PC, put the Kernel some where on your SD Card~
[back on your phone Then Select Unmount
Scroll to ****Go bacK***** [select]
Scroll to install zip from sd card [select]
Select choose zip from sdcard
Navigate to where you have the zip
Select it
Scroll down to Yes-Flash........
Let the phone do its thing!
Good luck!
Your bootlooped...if you can get into cwm wipe all three and flash a rom thats compatible with the version of cwm you have installed. Or odin back to stock and start over...

thanks a bunch guys! happy holidays ill let you know if i succeed
This may sound dumb but
make sure you are NOT hitting "reboot recovery" and you ARE hitting "reboot system now"

I've tried flashing recovery via Odin and CWM Recovery and it will reboot into recovery just fine. However, when I let it reboot into android, turn it off, and then go back into recovery, CWM is gone. The phone, however, stays rooted.
Any idea what could be wrong or how to fix this?
Secondly, if I can get into CWM immediately after flashing, is it safe to flash a new ROM at that point or do I need to get CWM to stick first?
Anyone? Any suggestions at all will be appreciated

Sure... You can flash a rom immediately following the flash of cwm.... Did you also install busy box?
Which cwm are you trying to use? 5.8.4.7 seems to do me good....?

Before your phone boots after installing cwm in Odin do a battery pull then boot into recovery (Volume Up+Home+power) then flash your superuser/root package. It will stick then.

I tried using that CWM version as well as an older one. Both work and I can get busy box and superuser installed once it boots up. But when I power down and try to go back into recovery, CWM is gone. I do get to keep root though.

I tried unchecking the auto-reboot button on Odin 4 and 7, and going that route. Both allow me to get into CWM, where I try to flash the recovery v5.zip. Still doesn't stick unfortunately.
My flash counter is up to about 10 now, trying to get CWM to stick..

Thanks everyone. I used CWM toolkit, reflashed the stock recovery, then used odin 3.07 to re-flash CWM 5.5.0.4 and it stuck.
I was only wondering if this was available since we can't flash recovery images on the opposite recovery. I have made a recovery image in TWRP but have not gone so far to not just flash CWM and make a recovery image that will serve as my new point zero. Just curious since I only saw flashable CWM.

the link you gave to TWRP recovery was exactly what i was looking for. In the TWRP website they have a flashable option for TWRP to use in whatever existing recovery you have, that is CWM for us. Under droidstyle's guide (there's the thread also in dev section too for CWM) there is also a link for flashable CWM so now im set.
Although you already found what you were looking for, you can also download/run the goo manager app, press menu->install open recovery script. That will install TWRP.

I was hoping this way would let me get out but Ive now lost any custom recovery while in paranoid android. So what i did was while in Jelly Beans rom is flash CWM recovery to then flash Paranoid. I then decided to go back to beans, and i tried to flash TWRP zip that i has to restore my recovery. That failed an i have no recovery. I only have android system recovery <3e>. I am currently trying the goo manager to get me back, but so far i dont think im doing it right ill keep trying.
...So with goo manager i cant flash back to beans, i cant flash CWM back on, and ive: installed open recovery script to to install the TWRP img file but it must not have worked, but i cant see anything to indicate not.
Ok so im am stuck with just the stock recovery. In goo manager it says the recovery was installed but if is reboot to recovery its just crappy old boring stock and if i try to flash anything from goo manager it just reboots to that same stock recovery. Anyone know how to get a custom recovery back?

The TWRP in goo manager is not the correct one for our phone. I did the same thing and ended up in the same position as you. I used the suckitverizon file from Adams thread and odined it back on to the phone. If was in that position now I would use the newly released tool kit.
Good luck.

Im downloading the toolkit now but in the meantime did you have to restart the whole process in the 3 step bootloader unlock or did you just start at flashing suckitverizon version 2 in odin? Im just wondering how safe that is.

No I did not have to start over. If I recall correctly, I put the suckit file in the pda box and hit start. You can read up on it in Adams main thread and I know there were a few other people in the same fix.
Good luck
Toolkit saved my bacon. Many lessons learned. so if i want to restore an image in twrp say from paranoid then i use cwn to flash to a rom that plays nice with twrp then flash twrp back then recover in twrp. Now if i get stuck the toolkit has the correct twrp and cwm for the verizon note ii.
spoke too soon i though at least getting cwm was all good. However the toolkit wont install TWRP which is what i have my backups made on. i followed all the step on screen and selected sch-i605 to be flashed in odin. I can only reboot into stock recovery afterwards. :crying:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051992 This has been asked (by me) and answered (by awesome folks with more sense than me).
ok it all over. CWM can be had by flashing zip in twrp or through tool kit. twrp i only regained by odining again the suckitverizon from Adam's unlockbootloader thread.
