I've tried flashing recovery via Odin and CWM Recovery and it will reboot into recovery just fine. However, when I let it reboot into android, turn it off, and then go back into recovery, CWM is gone. The phone, however, stays rooted.
Any idea what could be wrong or how to fix this?
Secondly, if I can get into CWM immediately after flashing, is it safe to flash a new ROM at that point or do I need to get CWM to stick first?
Anyone? Any suggestions at all will be appreciated

Sure... You can flash a rom immediately following the flash of cwm.... Did you also install busy box?
Which cwm are you trying to use? 5.8.4.7 seems to do me good....?

Before your phone boots after installing cwm in Odin do a battery pull then boot into recovery (Volume Up+Home+power) then flash your superuser/root package. It will stick then.

I tried using that CWM version as well as an older one. Both work and I can get busy box and superuser installed once it boots up. But when I power down and try to go back into recovery, CWM is gone. I do get to keep root though.

I tried unchecking the auto-reboot button on Odin 4 and 7, and going that route. Both allow me to get into CWM, where I try to flash the recovery v5.zip. Still doesn't stick unfortunately.
My flash counter is up to about 10 now, trying to get CWM to stick..

Flashing 5.8.4.7 after renaming it to recovery.img with mobile odin did the trick for me and it stuck.

Thanks everyone. I used CWM toolkit, reflashed the stock recovery, then used odin 3.07 to re-flash CWM 5.5.0.4 and it stuck.

OK so Im on AOKP milestone 6 with the devil kernel and i went in to recovery to wipe cache and dalvik cache and when i pressed reboot system it goes back to recovery!!!! please help as I really don't want to reflash everything!!! Thanks.
I had this same problem until I flashed TWRP. When I rebooted, it instead loaded the OS, but it still had Devil Recovery. WTF?
Have you tried re-flashing the rom without wiping data?

Try flashing CWM recovery again using Heimdall or Odin. Once it boots into recovery, flash TWRP or another recovery of your choice, then reboot and hopefully you will see your boot animation. That's what I did to get AOKP build 40 to boot again (though strangely enough, it's stuck with Devil recovery even after flashing TWRP). Hope this helps you guys out. And be sure to make backups!

Again, how can i put twrp on my sd card if i'm stuck in recovery? Is there a link for an odin version of twrp
You should be able to mount your SD card in recovery anyway. If not, take it out and insert it into an adapter to plug into your computer. I don't know if there's an Odin version of TWRP, I flashed it in CWM recovery.
I would read droid styles guide first if you have not yet as it has all the answers you will need. You just need to read through it and following the directions.

If you're using CWM, it's under Advanced or Mounts and Storage. Plug in the USB cable like you normally would.

I try to install twrp but it says installation aborted. I'm really starting to get sick of this phone and its stability issues.
You got the zip, right? It's in the Fascinate development section of the forums.
There is nothing wrong with the phone. I don't understand why you can't just Odin back to stock and start over. With the amount of time you have been stuck in recovery you could have fixed it by now. It you could follow droid styles guide to get out of the recovery loop without going back to stock. Something tells me you really just want a new phone...am I close???

Don't you belong in a different section?
Anyway, sorry for getting snippy, I was just really tired and frustrated. I did use the .zip from the forums.
If you've already tried Heimdall-flashing CWM again, and that didn't work, then I suggest you Odin back to stock as shelby suggested. If you haven't made a nandroid already, do so, then revert back to stock and start from scratch. You can try restoring your nandroid once you're no longer stuck in recovery.

I have a mez and I just got the sgs3 a little while ago. You need to check out section 8 or 9 I think of the guide. It tells you exactly how to get out of your situation.

There's also a topic about the "three-finger recovery boot loop" fix. You could try that.
I've just downloaded the latest CM10 ready to flash, booted into recovery but now I can't get out. its glitchingwhen I try to move between the menus and the power button to select doesnt do anything.
I've tried pulling the battery out, tried rebooting by holding down the power button, but all ends up back in recovery where I can't do anything.
Never had a problem with it before, phones been working fine and haven't changed anything since booting into recovery, CWM version is 5.8.4.0.
Any suggestions?
When it boots into recovery, try flashing the zip again. Worked for me when flashing CM9 on my SGS.
Can you get into download mode?

I managed to get out of it, but had to spend quite a while pressing buttons. It's glitching all over the place!
Trying to update CWM through ROM manager but that seems to keep on crashing too. Can I just find and flash the latest CWM Touch to update it and stop it glitching?
Don't use ROM manager to flash anything, use Odin or mobile Odin.
In fact, use Odin to flash cf-root, it roots and flashed cwm at the same time.

Oh I did that ages ago, I was talking about updating to the latest version of cwm. Is the best way just grabbing the latest zip from the thread in general discussion and flashing it?
And the only reason I wanted to flash through ROM manager is because recovery mode was glitching so couldn't navigate through the menus properly.

Yep, get the .tar and flash of with Odin or mobile Odin and that's the best way.
In future if recovery is glitchy just boot into download mode and flash a new recovery, I've had issues similar to yours on my galaxy nexus when touch recoveries came out first, flashed back to "classic" cwm and perfect.

I updated my phone to me7 and I followed a root procedure. After I used goo manager to install twrp and clicked reboot recovery but when it rebooted it went into downloading mode and won't let me boot normally! It says on the top could not do normal boot. Please help!!!
Yeah mine is doing the same thing. Not really sure what's going on, heh.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
**EDIT**
Nevermind...now when I reboot it goes into the OS like normal. Thanks again, man.
You cant install a custom recovery on the me7 ota. Theres a ton of posts on this already. To get past that turn your phone off and use the button combo for booting into odin(vol down + power). Itll ask if you want to proceed or cancel, hit cancel and your phone will boot. To fix you will either need to flash a stock recovery or use odin and reflash me7.

Ok, I'm at work so don't have a lot of time to get into details. Here it is in a nutshell:
I used Josh's MI5 tar to return to stock so that I can get that MJ5 update (if that's what it's called)
That went through w/o incident. However, in my haste I went to Odin and attempted to use Chainfire's root method to regain root on MJ5.
Needless to say that was a huge mistake. It froze during Odin and I was forced to disconnectand pull the battery.
I'm still able to get into Odin but it will not accept the MI3 or MI5 firmware. It gets an error after a few seconds. If I try to get into stock recovery I get FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERD AN ISSIE. PLEASE SELECT RECOVRRY MODE IN KIES AND TRY AGAIN.
Anyone have any advice other than attempting to return the phone?
I'm so pised at myself for making such a dumb mistake.

I had the same problem and this is how I resolved it.
1) Odin CFautoroot
2) Odin TWRP
3) Boot into recovery and either restore a backup or install ROM of choice.
Don't sweat it bro. Simple fix:
1. Odin Twrp recovery
2. Boot into Recovery right after Odin passes you.
3. Flash a Nand or Rom.
4. Good to Go!
*Also, if you don't have a nand or backup or don't have a Rom downloaded, just download one and put it on you sdcard and then flash it. No need to wipe or factory reset. Rom of choice at this point should be Freeza's Mj4 or any mi5 rom will do!
*Stay away from Kies, waste of time...
Starting to look like the mj4 bootloader changed. Probably to try and prevent the knox safe root method by not allowing downgrading.

OMG, thanks a million bro! I Odin TWRP and it immediately booted into my stock MJ4. I missed the opportunity to get into Recovery right after Odin TWRP. Now when I try to manually get into recovery it takes me to stock recovery.
I'm so afraid of doing anything at this point and am just happy to have a working phone. What would be the best way to go about restoring my nandroid? I'm assuming I should ODIN Twrp recovery again but this time don't allow it to reboot the rom? I'm so nervous I just need some more confirmation before I do anything!
I love you guys in this community...someone always comes through over here when I'm in utter despair!
Boot into twrp recovery and flash your back up. . Once you flash twrp recovery using Odin you won't have to do it again.

Are you saying that after TWRP is flashed via Odin you have to immediately go into recovery? Because after I flashed TWRP in recovery the phone automatically rebooted back into the rom. After this I turned off the phone and tried to manually boot into recovery but it took me to stock recovery despite having just Odin TWRP a few moments earlier. Hope that makes sense.

Once you flash twrp via odin you have to go into twrp recovery before your phone reboots. I usually hold power up, power, and home button right after I hear my pc beep (like when you disconnect the usb). Once in twrp, flash away!

When flashing twrp in odin it may help to uncheck auto reboot. Then when it finishes boot it into recovery manually. That way you don't miss the window.

so, simple, i can't find a goot tutorial on how to flash a recovery, i tried with odin 3.0.4 and i've flashed twpr 2.8.6.1, cwm 6.0.4.7 and another cwm version, after the flash with odin if i restart the phone i still have the original recovery
for now i manage to root it following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-i9300-android-4-3-t3104969
now let's see if i can flash the recovery with rom manager or odin mobile
done using rom manager, thanks anyway

i'm not sure honestly, i think it automatically restart
Letting it auto restart means the stock recovery reinstalls. You need to let it finish without a reboot. Then do a battery pull and then try boot into recovery. Then it will stick.
