M Droid Razr or Samsung Nexus - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am a Verizon customer and am intrigued by the Nexus. With exception of a two month test of the Samsung SGT, I have been a loyal Motorola customer through 5 Android phones and the Xoom. I am very comfortable with the rooting/ROM processes of Motorola product line. Normally, I would not even consider the Nexus, but given it being Googles official phone and being available on Verizon, I am having difficulty deciding Nexus or Razr?
I know the specs, and beyond the battery not being replaceable it appears to me the RAZR has the advantage. So why would/should I consider the Nexus beyond the unlocked bootloader?
Your Thoughts

ICS, vanilla android, 4.65 inch screen, frequent OTA updates, if history is any clue it will have a huge development community.

motorola razr will have ICS in q1 of 2012, too.
bigger - doesn't mean better. for me, 4.3 is optimal for smartphones (though, 4.6 isn't bad too).
google have bought (or still in process) motorola, so moto phones shall be first in a queue for all updates.
well, both devices have + and -, so it's really hard to say what is better... i was planning to buy nexus but no slot for microSDHC and bad camera quality stopped me (16gb is little for me).

You should check how good is galaxy nexus camera compare to Motorola. Please do some research before complaining.

[Q] Are there any hope for Jelly Bean from Official Source?

Hello Everybody
I am planning to purchase this mobile phone if Jelly Bean becomes available to this.
The mobile phone is very much comparable with HTC One S in many aspects.
Moreover not as expensive as HTC One S.
I believe we can get Jelly Bean with CM's help.
But, i wish to have Motorola's customization too.

Many devices are still waiting for ics, so is too early to know about jb. Maybe after the rollout motorola will state their position about jb
My view is we should get it. The RAZR is similar to the gnex and there is now the connection between google and moto. It depends on if/when google handed over the code. And how much messing with it moto want to do.
If you look at how long it took them to get ics to us compared to how little it differs to the nexus release, they must have been doing something else too?

The funny thing it that ics for verizon came out early that for gsm unbranded ics
Read an article about Cyanogenmod 10 where the devs said that it's similar enough to ICS that they'll be able to port it quick. Hopefully that'll mean a quick turnaround for us, too.

Seeing ask bugs with ics, i would say that it will be loooong time to jb, thus i don't think we will be in the timeframe

My last phone, a Motorola Droid X, went from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread... so, it's likely the Razr will receive Jelly Bean.

I have a standing offer for angst-ridden people who want to sell their phones- $5.00 for a Razr, $6.00 for a Razr Maxx, and additional $0.25 if it has a memory card over 32gb.

It's Motorola. Make it 2 years.
It's VERY popular to trash Motorola! One wonders how all you smart consumers bought one in the first place, since their upgrade schedules, locked bootloaders, etc. haven't changed since they first made smart phones.
I just can't believe how quickly the jelly bean threads started now that we have ICS. I love this forum, all jokes aside. I love that it moves so quickly on to the next big thing.

Hello Everybody
Thanks for all your replies.
I actually open this topic in optimism for two reasons.
1) ICS update for this mobile phone is mostly stocks with small Motorola niceties.
2) Motorola Mobility is now a Google's Business.
Because of 1) point being true, Motorola Mobility has very less engineer work to update it's OS to Jelly Bean.
One more take, Google could have bought Motorola Mobility for two reasons.
1) For it's deep patent portfolio
2) To side-step Samsung
If the second reason i suggested becomes true, then if Google adopts this mobile phone as Google's Experience device, then Motorola Razr has a bright future.
As it is very much capable than Samsung Nexus S at least.
Google not even have to adopt Motorola Mobility's mobile phones as Google Experience Devices, if Google just shows small love to its own business, that it self is very much enough.
Moto RazrMAXX has excellent build quality and out of the world battery life... But it comes with locked bootloader...
Verizon is by far the best network, but they are constantly messing (shared plan MINUS Unlimited, Unlimited = FULL device price) and milking their customers...
OH GOD, What a life...!!!
Even though Motorola + Verizon combination scares me, GOD Google + Motorola is giving me some little hope... First they reduced the Blurness in UI... Then they may bring JB to us before others...
We just can hope only...
@Raddy
I don't think Google's Moto is to side-step Sammy... Because 1) Google is NOT a half eaten rotten fruit... 2) Google can never be EVIL, afaik...
Further if they want to side-step Sammy, first thing they have to do is UnLocking their bootloaders atleast in their international versions or bring some options like HTC... Imagine Nexus-MAXX-HD

You forget that not all RAZR owners and not all members of this forum are verizon customers in the us. I'm on orange in the UK. Its more traditional that unbranded devices get the updates first. I don't understand why vz pushed it before the rest of us. Makes no sense.

I think we have to look at the larger picture here- Apple has the software and hardware production of the iPhone. That gives them an excellent position to offer a device with no corruption of their happy unicorn sparkly iWorld experience. Google acquiring Motorola gives them the manufacturing arm they lacked. I fully expect to see the next "Nexus" iteration to come from Motorola. On the Windows Phone front, Nokia is doing horrible and will very likely be bought out by Microsoft for the same reason- it gives them a turnkey manufacturing arm... one already geared up to make Windows Phones.
Whether you like Apple products or not, you cannot argue with their success. They design and build products that sell very well. Every company out there wants to do the same thing.

Next possible upgrade?

Im using a droid razr and i want a new motorola phone..What would you guys recommend? I'm from singapore btw
Simple user too
Well, with android, choice is a hard task.
But, it all depend of what you exept from a smartphone.
Motorola Razr I / M / HD
Great phone, great built quality (HD have 720p screen).
But camera is bad compare to samsung or HTC, and there is a poor rom development ATM .
So if you dont really mind about picture and rom flashing you should keep a motorola, but they are really slow about update.
Galaxy S3/NOTE II
Great phone, fast smooth great camera quality and awesome ROM/KERNEL development, if you're a flashmaniac it's for you.
BUT bad quality of build (plastic back) solid but plastic.
Samsung is pretty fast for update their devices.
For me, the best compromise, is HTC ONE X(+) or Butterfly in china great built quality / camera / ROM KERNEL development.
It's a really quick analyze, but it should help you a bit.
personally if i could buy (out of money atm ) i would buy HTC ONE X+ or wait 4 or 5 month to see what will happen in CES 2013 and buy latest gen phone.
I'm a stylish person, So im more worried about physical outlook more as the phones that are released nowadays are all at a certain standard
Should i wait till Feb to upgrade then?

Just got my Nexus 4 in the mail to replace the RAZR and it looks gorgeous. For the price/performance, I don't think you can go wrong with it.
As a long time motorola user,
My plan was to replace xt910 with the XT926 Maxx edition but after reviewing the xt925 myself, i changed my mind and will stay with XT910 for a while. When motorola releases quadcore, i'll think again.
Flava: If you are a motorola user, and like motorola. Get a RAZR HD. It is the succesor of the RAZR, launched a few months ago, It is a dualcore phone, and stands up pretty well in terms of performance, hardware, and software. (It has a more Stock look, as Motorola has been removing some of its motoblur AND it recently got JB update ) (It has the usual Motorola quality build: Kevlar back, water resistant, gorilla glass, no cheap plastic)
However. I would also recommend that if you take a broader look. You consider another brand.
For example: The Galaxy S3
-The best Android Phone of the year.
-Great development community. (As Motorola has locked boot loaders, the life of the device actually shortens because of the set apparts from updates and the impossibility to develop for it)
-One of the best hardwares out there.
If not, I would suggest getting a Google nexus phone. As someone commented before, the nexus 4 Is as well a very good device. It has arguably the best hardware out there, and you'll get Official Google updates for years.
Resume on my suggestions:
- Droid RAZR HD (If you can't leave motorola)
- Galaxy S3
- Nexus 4
The only upgrade I would consider now would be the Sony acro S
-Scratch resistant shatterproof glass
-IP57 certified water and dust proof
-Water proof to 1 meter for 30 mins
-720x1280, 4.3 inch screen
-Dual core 1.5 Ghz
-16GB, 1GB ram
Haven't seen another phone that can match that, maybe faster quad cores but drop it hard or hit some water and it's toast.
It looks superb too! But that's not so important to me.

Anyone else who's on the fence tempted to wait for the xTablet?

I really like this tablet (all but the light bleed and the lack of a good charger, with the latter being not really a big deal) and am still planning on getting one as soon as they're back in stock next year IF the light bleed is fixed in the next batch. But, after seeing the news yesterday.about the Motorola/Google Flagship X devices (Phone and subsequent tablet), I'm really tempted to wait for that tablet seeing as it will also be a Nexus device and have Motorola's awesome build quality (After my first Nokia brick phone way back in the day, every device I owned after was Motorola, and I love their build quality.) I know for sure I'll get the phone since my 2 year will probably be up on my Nexus by that time, but I may also wait for that tablet.
Anyone else who's been waiting to buy the N10 feeling the desire to wait it out a bit longer?
I do, but not because of the x tablet, I am not a big fan of Motorola so. But I think I will wait until CES 2013 and see if there's anything worth waiting for, if not I'm not even sure about Nexus 10 anymore, Samsung's Note 10.1 seems like a better choice somehow.

I'm not completely unimpressed with Samsung's build quality, and I love my Galaxy Nexus, but I just like Motorola's better.
I'm also hoping to see something that excites me at CES, but I won't have anything but a Nexus device. I want something that I know developers will be paying attention to and not some off the wall device that might get one or two custom ROMs.

I understand, I've used Motorola several years ago before the smartphone era and they were some really good phones, but there's no other brand I would prefer but Samsung when it comes to phones, and I'm leaning that way for the tablets as well.
And totally, I'm actually looking forward to see Samsung's new announcement which it's most likely going to be a reveal for S 4, but still I'll wait to see if it isn't a new tablet that could be worth waiting for. And that Samsung Note 10.1 is really tempting me lol.

Who knows when it will actually be released, much less if the rumor is true. I'm sure good things will come from Motorola eventually but probably not for another year. If Motorola comes out with a mind bogglingly good tablet then I'll sell the Nexus 10 and grab it...I'm not going to hold my breath though.
Honestly, I can put up with the Nexus 10 not being perfect because its a Nexus device and I can build the OS from source, I know it will be supported for a good while, and its damned fast for browsing.
I've had 4 different tablets in the last year or so...none of them were perfect.

Two variables:
What gets announced in January & if the N10 is fixed in the next batch
Those two things will decide where my $500 goes
I love my n10 but I'll definitely be following the x tablet.

The challenge in waiting for "_________" is that by the time it hits the market there's already been a leak about the better "__________" that may be on the horizon (which we know moves). Asus announced the TF700 in January 2012 and it wasn't available for purchase until July. Samsung announced the Note 10.1 in February 2012, redesigned it after it was shown, and it launched in August. The N10 cleared the FCC in August and just recently was made available for purchase. Moral of the story: buy what you like now, take good care of it so you can resell it for a decent price, and buy what's "new" when it's at least up for pre-order. When leaks come out about products in development with nothing but design direction there's usually a long wait until they actually hit the market (EG: whatever Motorola's theorizing). When you start to see component leaks and shots by Mr. Blurry Cam that means it's closer but can still mean months.
I might depending what its like but im not a fan of Motorola so i doubt it will be something attractive.
From what I've read, the X devices are not part of the Nexus brand, they're 100% Motorola. Don't expect stock Android and direct updates from Google- or, well, now that Moto is part of Google, I mean direct updates from the Android team.
Nope... because every article States the thing silk probably not be out for a year or two. Wonder if x though is like nexus. The x is the prominent letter and even the bout animation logo. I've been waiting for Google to do something with Motorola for awhile. Google could rectify their horrible business plan easy. Now that Samsung is owning the market with android products and has made Asus a tablet leader outside Apple, I think it is now safe for them to throw their own subsidiary a bone and make a nice Google Motorola device. Might be to late on the end though.

This. Ask any owner of an Atrix (myself), Photon or Electrify. They'll tell you just how great #motofail is in terms of software updates. You get ONE. Better hope your device ships with the latest version of the OS, because otherwise you just get bumped to the next major revision instead of anything near what is considered current and suddenly you're screwed, even if they promise you otherwise. The lack of proper kernel source means custom roms are unlikely to completely save you as well.
Still planning on getting my N10 in early January. If a more reputable company like Samsung were to announce something like the rumored X, I'd wait. But @#$%^ no for Motofail.

Anyone who tries to stay on the bleeding edge of a rapidly moving technology will be in this situation perpetually. Something better is always on the horizon. At some point you have to pull the trigger, even though something better has been announced, and may or may not be right around the corner. I tend to be an early adopter of generational improvements (A15 and super high res screen in the N10). There will be better devices in this category, but by the time you wait for the "perfect" device, the next generational improvement will be right around the corner. Until you accept this reality, you'll always have buyers remorse.
I wouldn't touch motorola with a 10 foot pole after the crappy end of life support debacle like the atrix 4g. This might be an exception since google will back it up. Never again Motorola!!!!
Per WSJ, X tablet will be after X phone, so it'll be a while.
The more interesting bit was that Viewdle (face-rec) should be incorporated, so we should see some aspect of AR in 5.0 release. Niche uses aside, AR hasn't had any wide application in an OS. AR would be Glass' main ace.
Though, I think 5.0's over-arching theme will be TV integration. Apple is making noises, and MS will intro X720. Goog can't afford to fall behind. Miracast should play a large part, not only to leverage TVs as big displays, but for tabs to act as 2nd screen.
Frankly, tablet hardware bores me now. It's MOTS. What's interesting are wearables, and Glass is supposed to make its debut in 2013. You can bet that both MS and Apple are burning the midnight oil on their own skunkwork response.
Depending on how versatile wearables (eye-top?) will be, the tablet may hit the skids as quickly as it got on. I'm thinking 2013 for the coming-out, and one or two years for the first retail product.
I personally will wait for a Nexus device with Miracast. I really hope the N10 will get Miracast after all...
It's either the Nexus 10 for me or a Quad core A15 / Nvidia tegra 4 tablet. Hope they get announced at CES/MWC
I don't do enough gaming to need a beefed-up graphics chip in the SoC in my tablet, so for me the Nexus 10 works fine. I'm a graduate student, so much of what I do is just reading PDFs, books, and magazines. I listen to music and watch YouTube, neither of which will be necessarily improved with a faster SoC. The screen on my Nexus 10 is brilliant and I couldn't be happier with what this tablet does for my needs. Plus, Samsung > Motorola. I know I may be in the minority here, but this thing is a Nexus, and it's made by Samsung, two things that I look for in a device.

[Q] Is The Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD Worth It?

I'm limping along with an HTC Thunderbolt and I am getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of an official update to ICS. I've had it rooted since I first got it a year and a half ago, but I tried a custom ICS rom for it recently and the antenna reliability is all over the place. I'm thinking of tossing in the towel and finally getting a new phone.
Is the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD likely to have stronger support in the dev community? Or should I wait a bit longer for newer phones to be released?

Moto phones are good, and the HD is quite svelte. But its very large. I would go with a one s - it has excellent community support, superb battery life and a fine screen. And its THIN. The HD is cumbersome in my hand at leasst, and moto has pulled its jb update for some reason, so I'm dissapointed with it. Also some of the best root apps like root call blocker don't work on it atm.

I want 4g LTE though, which the Nexus 4 doesn't have. And I've been hearing a lot about poor outgoing voice quality on Samsung phones and poor support for Unity games. I develop games in Unity, so...

What's the next Android device you will purchase and why?

Just curious as to what the next Android device you want to get? Things keep advancing so fast, quad cores are coming to trend now and with Kit-Kat, there are a lot of possibilities. I'm considering switching from Sprint to AT&T, to get the LG G2! I'm so tired of Sprint and how crazy slow they are... I can get more, and significantly faster data with AT&T. The beizels on the G2 are a huge selling point for me, fitting a 5.2 inch screen into the same form factor as an HTC One is impressive. Not to mention the quad core 2.2 GHz processor on it... That's ridiculous, and I love my Nexus, but my god, that makes this look average... What about y'all?

I know what you mean! Things are progressing at such a ridiculous rate in the mobile world; its incredible. Especially Intel. They've made an absolutely shocking amount of progress in the past year. They've basically done what took ARM companies 3-4 years in 12 months. I'm really looking forward to Intel chips in our smartphones and tablets; we'll finally be able to crush Apple's in-house designs!
As for my next device, I'm definitely going to be getting the Nexus 5. A 5" device with a Snapdragon 800, OIS, Android 4.4 and other incredible hardware? Count me in! I sold my Galaxy Nexus a few weeks back, after the Nexus 4 price drop (I got a shockingly good price for it, too) in preparation for the N5. Now, I realize that SOME of the leaked specifications may not be totally accurate, but I am also hoping that we get the 5" display in the smaller-than-Nexus 4 frame. That would totally sell it for me.
I will probably will continue to use my galaxy nexus until it dies. It have been an excellent phone.
If it dies however I will buy the Nexus 5 midst likely.
I don't think i could use anything else other than a Nexus and be happy with it. Mainly because of the updates.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. Used the Spencer features and they can't be beat if doing a large amount of sketching.
But I may wait until spring as the N10 is still great. Use a capacitive stylus with good results.
I only got the Nexus 10 this summer, so I'm good with my tablet for a long while I hope.
My Droid RAZR M I got last October, so I would sooner replace that. If I decide to leave Verizon next time, then I may well go for a Nexus for a phone as well. I love getting the latest official updates OTA.

Wait for the 2015 edition to be released Oct 2014

I only got the Nexus 10 this summer, so I'm good with my tablet for a long while I hope.
My Droid RAZR M I got last October, so I would sooner replace that. If I decide to leave Verizon next time, then I may well go for a Nexus for a phone as well. I love getting the latest official updates OTA.

I actually gave this some more thought, and I do not think I will go Nexus on my next phone for one reason, I want to keep a microsd slot. I keep a ton of music and other files on my phone I simply don't need on my tablet, and it irritates me such a simple convenience is being phased out by so many new phones. Screw the cloud model, I want my files on me when I want them without a connection.

Sigh... me, too. I've been wanting to come on this thread and pledge allegiance to the phone I hope the Nexus 5 will be. If it's a Snapdragon 800 / Adreno 330 / 1080p / 3000 mAh G2 with standard button placement and at least 2 Gb of RAM... running pure, unbloated, updated Android... then the Nexus 5 will be a stun-gun of a phone for 2013. (darn it... just drooled on my N10.)
But... we get all that and no removable memory? I know, that would mean space, weight, cost, whatever. But Samsung can do it on their flagships (with the added benefit of replaceable batteries). Seems like such a simple thing for winning freedom from needing access to a good WiFi signal.
If the N5 overcomes the N4's hardware limitations that now prevent the use of Nexus Media Importer -- and along with it the unrooted read/write use of USB card readers & memory sticks -- that'd go a long way. Let's just say I'm not holding my breath, since Google appears to have a different agenda.
For a brand that touts such an open OS, the box they put it in sure is closed.

I always only had 16 gb Sd cards so going from 16 gb s3 to 32 gb HTC didnt make a single difference for me I have 8 gb of music and about 10 gb free on device for movies, and i think thats the space i need.

OK... But you had to pay a lot more for that 32GB model I bet. My Droid RAZR M came with 8GB built in, and for only $20 I added another 32GB. I can even upgrade it to a 64GB microsd for less than $50. Good luck trying to get that kind of bargin upgrade on a non-microsd phone. Another added benefit... Let's say your phone meets an untimely death in the laundry machine, well at least with microsd your photos and music are perfectly safe.

I'll get a Galaxy Nexus 2 when it comes (I hope it does). My Galaxy Nexus holds up for a while and I use my Nexus 10 for gaming. I'm not a fan of lg. I hope Samsung will produce a Nexus phone again.

one vote for Sammy, for their expandable memory
I've got my eye on a couple of future devices.
I'm hoping with the SG Note 3, the LG G2 -- and hopefully the Nexus 5 -- already or soon to be running the Snapdragon 800, we'll start to see some cool 64-bit apps. When the 64-bit world takes hold, that could be a nice time to pick up a SG S5. Samsung should have multitasking to a new level by then, too.

Hope Snapdragon 800 has better battery management than Snapdragon 600 or else i wouldnt worth it to upgrade imho. The speed upgrade means nothing, only think that makes your phone faster is a well tuned rom/kernel. My ex Galaxy S3 with Cm10.2 and a custom kernel is the fastest thing i've ever used by a ridiculous mergin. Everything happens instanlty and its last gen,
Also my HTC ONE with the 4.3 official Rom is also like a new phone. So much faster and battery life is like 2x what it used to be.
SideNote for Lg G2. Will lg EVER make a decent looking phone? I am sorry but i dont care if Lg G2 is the best phone ever released, its so boring looking i would never consider buying.
Maybe Nexus 5, need to wait and see
I agree, the G2 looks kinda plain -- at least while viewing it on a 2D screen. Could be pretty comfortable in the hand, though, with those backside curves. I was a little surprised, papakaliati, to hear you say you're interested in the Nexus 5 after what you had to say about LG and specifically their G2. Most folks are thinking it will be LG manufacturing the Nexus 5 and that it'll look a lot like the G2.
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 32GB model. Already have it on pre-order. I had always said that the perfect device would be the Note 10.1 with the Nexus 10 screen, and voila! Can't wait!
An 8 inch Android tablet, probably the LG G Pad 8.3 because it's the first one to have 1080p. Or the next Note 8.0.
The Nexus 10 is too big to play games, etc.
Also maybe the next Nexus 5.

I agree that there's no point in trying to go any faster than 'instantly' ...sounds like you had a sweet setup with your S3!
With Kit Kat supposedly supporting ARM-64 and with Qualcomm, Tegra & Exynos -- and AMD & Intel? -- all producing 64-bit mobile processors in 2014, some interesting 64-bit applications might not be far behind, as well as some significant energy demands, like you've pointed to. I bet power-management & battery-design teams are putting in all-nighters to bring us more innovations like big.LITTLE... and to overcome the downsides of lithium-sulfur technology, which could increase battery life by a factor of 4.
Yeah, I wasn't talking about new processors running 32-bit apps faster, though there will, of course, be some performance gains as we'll as some overhead hits. I was thinking about the new capabilities heading our way once applications cross over into 64-bit territory -- whenever that is -- and not just better encryption and data-bunkering.
We'll be looking at real-time audio and image editing, providing such things as on-the-fly video-effects management... and faster vector processing, which game devs will surely take advantage of, like Infinity Blade III has for Apple's new phone. I'm eager to see the impact of 64 bit on multimedia multitasking. General improvements in multitasking could get us to the 32-bit 4Gb RAM ceiling surprisingly soon.
After that, the 64-bit RAM upper limit of 16 Exbibytes -- 17.18B Gigabytes -- should hold us a while!

I am hoping it will keep a more nexus line than LG but then again I might be just dreaming. New Note would be an instant by if I didn't have the nexus 10.

They already have pics of the nexus 5 and a 3d rendering. You should check them out. The phone is a. Little plain. They got rid of the glass back and went with that rubbery plastic which is better durability i guess but not as good looking. They also got a bigger screen then nexus 4 with a smaller frame. :sly:

In the G2's favor, this is an interesting market differentiation:
