[Q] Are there any hope for Jelly Bean from Official Source? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hello Everybody
I am planning to purchase this mobile phone if Jelly Bean becomes available to this.
The mobile phone is very much comparable with HTC One S in many aspects.
Moreover not as expensive as HTC One S.
I believe we can get Jelly Bean with CM's help.
But, i wish to have Motorola's customization too.

Many devices are still waiting for ics, so is too early to know about jb. Maybe after the rollout motorola will state their position about jb

My view is we should get it. The RAZR is similar to the gnex and there is now the connection between google and moto. It depends on if/when google handed over the code. And how much messing with it moto want to do.
If you look at how long it took them to get ics to us compared to how little it differs to the nexus release, they must have been doing something else too?

You forget moto has to run through the Verizon bloat mill, I'm guessing 6 months?

The funny thing it that ics for verizon came out early that for gsm unbranded ics

Read an article about Cyanogenmod 10 where the devs said that it's similar enough to ICS that they'll be able to port it quick. Hopefully that'll mean a quick turnaround for us, too.

raddy if you want i can sell you mine , i have enought of this ics delays.

Seeing ask bugs with ics, i would say that it will be loooong time to jb, thus i don't think we will be in the timeframe

My last phone, a Motorola Droid X, went from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread... so, it's likely the Razr will receive Jelly Bean.

I have a standing offer for angst-ridden people who want to sell their phones- $5.00 for a Razr, $6.00 for a Razr Maxx, and additional $0.25 if it has a memory card over 32gb.

It's Motorola. Make it 2 years.

It's VERY popular to trash Motorola! One wonders how all you smart consumers bought one in the first place, since their upgrade schedules, locked bootloaders, etc. haven't changed since they first made smart phones.

I just can't believe how quickly the jelly bean threads started now that we have ICS. I love this forum, all jokes aside. I love that it moves so quickly on to the next big thing.

Hello Everybody
Thanks for all your replies.
I actually open this topic in optimism for two reasons.
1) ICS update for this mobile phone is mostly stocks with small Motorola niceties.
2) Motorola Mobility is now a Google's Business.
Because of 1) point being true, Motorola Mobility has very less engineer work to update it's OS to Jelly Bean.
One more take, Google could have bought Motorola Mobility for two reasons.
1) For it's deep patent portfolio
2) To side-step Samsung
If the second reason i suggested becomes true, then if Google adopts this mobile phone as Google's Experience device, then Motorola Razr has a bright future.
As it is very much capable than Samsung Nexus S at least.
Google not even have to adopt Motorola Mobility's mobile phones as Google Experience Devices, if Google just shows small love to its own business, that it self is very much enough.

Moto RazrMAXX has excellent build quality and out of the world battery life... But it comes with locked bootloader...
Verizon is by far the best network, but they are constantly messing (shared plan MINUS Unlimited, Unlimited = FULL device price) and milking their customers...
OH GOD, What a life...!!!
Even though Motorola + Verizon combination scares me, GOD Google + Motorola is giving me some little hope... First they reduced the Blurness in UI... Then they may bring JB to us before others...
We just can hope only...
@Raddy
I don't think Google's Moto is to side-step Sammy... Because 1) Google is NOT a half eaten rotten fruit... 2) Google can never be EVIL, afaik...
Further if they want to side-step Sammy, first thing they have to do is UnLocking their bootloaders atleast in their international versions or bring some options like HTC... Imagine Nexus-MAXX-HD

Google said that google and motorola will stay as 2 different society. I guess they only wanted the patent. With the help of google motorola can be a really big seller of smartphone but i think they don't really care about motorola

You forget that not all RAZR owners and not all members of this forum are verizon customers in the us. I'm on orange in the UK. Its more traditional that unbranded devices get the updates first. I don't understand why vz pushed it before the rest of us. Makes no sense.

I think we have to look at the larger picture here- Apple has the software and hardware production of the iPhone. That gives them an excellent position to offer a device with no corruption of their happy unicorn sparkly iWorld experience. Google acquiring Motorola gives them the manufacturing arm they lacked. I fully expect to see the next "Nexus" iteration to come from Motorola. On the Windows Phone front, Nokia is doing horrible and will very likely be bought out by Microsoft for the same reason- it gives them a turnkey manufacturing arm... one already geared up to make Windows Phones.
Whether you like Apple products or not, you cannot argue with their success. They design and build products that sell very well. Every company out there wants to do the same thing.

Android and ICS

So after seeing what ICS can do and what not I am in the verge of switching either the Photon or OS. Simply because its idiotic to me that Android is suppose to be open yet we will have to wait at least 3 months for ICS to leave out to other devices. What good does this do for Google? What about those folks that just bought their Bionics? Amaze 4G? Or yet the Photon. We have to wait for this to hopefully come to us if not root and hope that we will get it.? This is my biggest gripe with the whole Android and other OS's. Even though its suppose to be open it still very frustrating with all the fragmentation ... so what do u guys think? Are you dome with the Moto?
I rather have all that, then iOS. Look at it this way it comes with the terf.

Well moto has posted in a blog that the Droid RAZR, Xoom, and Droid Bionic will all receive ICS within 6 weeks of it being released. No word yet on other devices, but I'd say its only a matter of time until the photon gets it as well, since it's specs are on par with the Bionic and Xoom.

Exactly my point, so why pick favorites Moto? Or is Verizon really THAT much more important? Sorry if I sound so negative but as a loyal Moto consumer why not state that all Motorola devices that were released in 2011 will receive ICS.?

M Droid Razr or Samsung Nexus

Hi,
I am a Verizon customer and am intrigued by the Nexus. With exception of a two month test of the Samsung SGT, I have been a loyal Motorola customer through 5 Android phones and the Xoom. I am very comfortable with the rooting/ROM processes of Motorola product line. Normally, I would not even consider the Nexus, but given it being Googles official phone and being available on Verizon, I am having difficulty deciding Nexus or Razr?
I know the specs, and beyond the battery not being replaceable it appears to me the RAZR has the advantage. So why would/should I consider the Nexus beyond the unlocked bootloader?
Your Thoughts
ICS, vanilla android, 4.65 inch screen, frequent OTA updates, if history is any clue it will have a huge development community.

motorola razr will have ICS in q1 of 2012, too.
bigger - doesn't mean better. for me, 4.3 is optimal for smartphones (though, 4.6 isn't bad too).
google have bought (or still in process) motorola, so moto phones shall be first in a queue for all updates.
well, both devices have + and -, so it's really hard to say what is better... i was planning to buy nexus but no slot for microSDHC and bad camera quality stopped me (16gb is little for me).

Android Jellybean 4.2 announced via Blogpost so were is for xt912?

So google announced the Android 4.2 Jellybean update today and I would like moto to announce when we will get it. I am so tried of being so far behind the os updates. I got a motorola because google owns them. I think they need to work better with google to not leave us behind. I am sure that some custom rom makers will come out with a 4.2 like they have with 4.1 but i am talking about official rom since i dont want to use up my internal storage since bootstrap uses internal storage with is only about half what motorola says since 8gb is only available after whatever...
So I say we start sending 4.2 jellybeans to goolge and moto to show that we want the latest and not have to wait two years as i just hot my phone a few months ago... so now i am stuck on such an outdated os its not funny.
link to jellybean 4.2 http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/29/android-4-2-jelly-bean/
link to google and lg with nexus 4.2 jellybean http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/10/lg-and-google-officially-announces-the-nexus-4/
Ok The XT912 was announced October 2011 and now its 1 year later so I would hope that since its only 12 months later that we would get 4.2 jellybean. But a leaked screenshot said we may not because of time frame support. So if 4.2 is now available we better get it... its not been 18 months yet... If apple can update their phones so quick requardless of cdma / gsm and all why cant google do the same atleast for the base os? then let the carriers turn the custom skin crap into a seperate optional download from the playstore like golauncher golocker gosms and all...

Motorola barely has ICS Stable on the xt910/xt912 so I don't expect to see Jelly Bean officially released from Motorola anytime soon for our phones. They did announce that they will release Jelly Bean for the Verizon versions next year but I would hold that with a grain of salt. They already screwed us over with the bootloader unlocks and the late release of ICS so I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to drop the RAZR overall from the Jelly Bean upgrade commitment using a silly reason. There are custom aokp/aosp/cm10 based builds in the development section each with their own bugs and issues. That will probably be your best choice for now if you'd want Jelly Bean running on your phone. Or else just save up some money and plan to pick up a Nexus 4 like me when its available.

the nexus 4 wont be on verizon as it is only hspda and no lte! a nexus with no lte! they said its because of update issues google has with verizon and the galaxy nexus and the control that cdma lte carriers want on their networks. I think now that the nexus line will only be on gsm only. Not sure what google will do when att and tmobile and other gsm carriers drop gsm and go advanced lte with voice over lte. I tried the custom cm10 and akop and love them but i use bluetooth and cant take a call for some reason over bluetooth a lg tone+ model. I also am not to keen on how bootstrap uses my internal storage to use the custom rom. My internal storage even after a full factory reset via droid razr 1.8 tool is 8gb of available internal storage. Other then that the custom roms are awesome but just wish we had true bootloader unlock. Can we use the space of webtop for custom roms with bootstrap?
GSM wont be dropped anytime soon as even though LTE may be gaining popularity, it is still very intensive on battery and requires extra radios. Also not everyone has an LTE phone and since LTE is still only available on certain areas, Your phone runs on hspa when not in an LTE zone. My brother has the s2x and his battery drains faster but he gets roughly the same speeds as me on hspa. Then are are issues with data caps as most people don't have unlimited data plans. Yes LTE is fast but you will rarely notice the difference in speed when doing standard browsing. So imo, lte currently is like paying more (money and battery life) for reaching you're data cap earlier.
In terms of the bootmenu issue, I haven't made the switch from safestrap 2 yet as I'm awaiting a major rom change. Check out the bootmenu thread. I believe someone posted a vold.fstab mod for switching around the storage locations.

Really? You can't enjoy it? Cause I came from a nexus to a RAZR cause I couldn't get signal anywhere, wifi dropped like a son of a *****, GPS just didn't work, and 4.1 wasn't all it was cracked up to be. 4.1 was flawed. Battery life was ATROCIOUS. I couldn't make it 5-6 hours without swapping batteries, and that's light usage for me. I believe ics is the height of android right now, best balance of performance, function, battery life, and screen on time IMHO. So even though the RAZR is now 2 cycles out, I think its still better

i love lte i can get up to 40megabits or faster in some areas. by my house i get about 15-20 megabits
Battery life is fixed by just using a charger all the time like i do. When I am at home I always have it pluged in even when playing games, watching movies, reading blogs. At work i use bluetooth and plug the phone in and move it around the floor as needed. You are right 4.1 is bad, thats why they have 4.2 jellybean and 5.0 is just about 6 months off. So i want 4.2 today and with in a few weeks i want to see a beta of 5.0 key lime pie as all flag ship phones should come as standard with os updates to the latest os. And its crap that the lg nexus 4 does not have lte... we lambasted the iphone 4 and 4s for not having lte and now a nexus device does not have it.... i heard that their will be many nexus devices so perhaps this nexus 4 will be the low end nexus device and the nexus razr x will be a high end lte phone. I think google saved the best for themselves with moto....
I have a friend who has a RaZr. And she has GB on it. Beat that.
I don't really know what is up with Google. They just bought Moto. What's the use if LG is going to make your next device and Sammy made your last. What's the point if a company you owe has all its devices still running GB. You don't even care to release an official statement saying it wont come. JB wont come. So that we can deal with it on our own.

I wouldn't be so sure just yet... Now that Google owns Moto, policies have changed. No more locked bootloaders (thank god) and more frequent updates to the OS. I would imagine that the next update for our device (both GSM and CDMA) will be packaged (I use that term loosely) with an unlocked bootloader.
The Nexus is a prime example. Despite some Nexus's being older then most of the devices with GB, they are still getting JB updates. I would imagine now that Google owns Moto, you will see more consistent updates to our Moto devices - granted that the Razr is almost a year old. Maybe not as fast as Nexus devices, but we will receive them regardless.

Second that.
I was pretty disappointed about the wait for ICS. But that was largely caused by the promisses of an early update made by Motorola when Razr was released, promises that IMHO were made to gain an unfair edge on the SGN released at the same time.

I'm not particularly worried; I actually posted some thoughts about Google I/O earlier today:
http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4209366/a-prediction-for-google-i-o
I'm quite happy with Android 4.1, so I guess it depends what KLP brings, but it's hard to imagine Google bringing anything that would make me want to abandon HTC's awesome camera software (which is one of the reasons I personally prefer HTC phones).
I bought a One XL last year around the same time, and Google I/O didn't make me regret that decision. Besides, this time I'll have a One XL I can mess around with if I want to install CM11 or something.

Precisely. Personally, I feel HTC is on the brink of a huge change, they've already dropped the source code and the phone hasn't even shipped in US yet! Also, it will definitely help to have the same device across several carriers (Even international ones!)
I feel the winds of change wafting from HTC and I must say, I love it.

I am definitely super-excited that the international and NA versions of the HTC One use the same chipset - that was one of the big issues with the One X and One XL last year.

Not to be the voice of doom or piss in anyone's Cheerios but HTC's in a world of hurt. The shipping delay for the One's cost them dearly financially and now its actual availability is going to bump up against Samsung's gazillion dollar marketing budget for the SGS4. Samsung also co-ops heavily with the U.S. carriers for advertising and provides big sales incentives down to the associate level. And if you walk in to a Best Buy you'll be greeted by Samsung's "Experience" sound and light show while a dummy One sits lonely and tethered to an end-cap somewhere next to a "free" LG Phone. With a Nexus 5 possible at I/O, an iP5s and lower-cost iPhone in June, Motorola's "Phone X," a Note III, and LG's 1080P 5" and 5.5" Optimus Pro Plus' all due by fall, the One's going to get lost in a sea of other devices a few months after launch because of HTC's (now even more) limited promotional budget. They have a tough road to hoe and 2013 will determine their future.
Here's an interesting discussion on HTC's current position from the international One forum...

Hmm I just sold my Nexus 4 because I never ever used it. It was never a real upgrade from the Galaxy Nexusnif you ask me. Adding a new processor and 1 extra GB of ram n a shiny back doesn't wow me

I'm not particularly worried; I actually posted some thoughts about Google I/O earlier today:

I'm quite happy with Android 4.1, so I guess it depends what KLP brings, but it's hard to imagine Google bringing anything that would make me want to abandon HTC's awesome camera software (which is one of the reasons I personally prefer HTC phones).
I bought a One XL last year around the same time, and Google I/O didn't make me regret that decision. Besides, this time I'll have a One XL I can mess around with if I want to install CM11 or something.

I have a canon eos 60D. You might consider buying that if you give the camera such importance.

I'm 99% sure that the next Nexus phone won't be at I/O. Also, the 5s won't be much to write home about. The S models never are.

A new nexus 7? Yes. Google glass? Yes.
Thew question is will HTC upgrade to 4.2 to 5.0 or from 4.1 to 5.0?

I believe they will, considering this is HTC's flagship phone.
This is an easy one for me. I'll just keep my Nexus 4 around until I/O. If what Google shows at I/O wows me and I can get it on the Nexus 4, I'll consider selling the One, but DAMN, it would have to be some mind blowing software for me to give up such amazing hardware and go back to a slower processor, worse screen, worse camera, worse speaker, cheaper materials, and no LTE.

It will be. It is 5.0
Got me thinking...
Whole argument is stupid in my opinion. It's clearly cut black and white. If you want immediate updates to current version of android go for a nexus. If you want real hardware get the HTC One. Unless HTC builds a nexus the new one won't be special.
I don't know why people buy carrier subsidized phones then complain when it stays a version behind. The phone company is there to make money. Put on your big boy pants and go nexus or shut up about it. It's really that simple

My point still stands. It's a phone, not a liver or heart that you have no choice on. My point is why ***** and moan about it when you yourself can do something about it and go elsewhere

HTC on Verizon

If they release this in the Nexus variant I found my next device. First phone besides the S4 to catch my attention all year. Hoping Motorola makes an announcement soon so I can really weigh my options.

Woooo! Waiting on full details on this and Moto X phone for my decision!

Glad to hear it's coming to Verizon, why would they release it as a Nexus variant though?

Oh yea!! Awesome!! I have $400 saved up on amazon specifically for this phone ha
That thing doesn't have an SD card right?
So my decision kinda goes down to front facing speakers, or an SD card.
Let the Exodus begin! I am so stoked about this. I have an upgrade available in August, but I will pay full price and save my unlimited data. Wahoo!

This upsets me. I just ordered an Samsung galaxy 4. But then again my last 2 HTC phones was the "best of the best and will be kept up with updates." And that never happened either

Nice, if they do a Verizon version, should be plenty of AOSP to pick from I'd hope
So I guess this won't be a true Google nexus phone but just a phone to run aosp? It is nice they are looking in to the option of giving owners a choice of os. Might be the first steps in allowing us to flash what we want in the future. Might get this phone when released.
My question is why is it Google owns moto but they still haven't released a nexus phone?

Here is how I am looking at the Nexus program. I think that people are starting to buy Nexus phones like the Iphone. A single experience across a single platform. Jelly Bean finally made Android beautiful to look at and use and now people are catching on. Samsung was part of the Nexus experience for a long time, and they made a decent market out of it. With this in mind people are seeing the Nexus verisons advertised and the skins OEM use are cartoony, bulky, and don't carry 1 or 2 of Androids core features well after release. With the Nexus program more OEM's are seeing profitability probability from having these stock phones. It also will help them develop a more precise skin in using stock they will see what people like and build features off it while maintaining stock characteristics. Skins can be good Sense started off on the right foot, but has gotten farther and farther away from adding any new functions (Cough) Iphone (Cough) it used to be the best clock, weather, and calendar but as of JB stock is just as good and with Google unifying to the Card UI its feels so consistent across the phone, and skins just subtract from that when they aren't offering anything else that isn't better than or as good as stock.
Now for us, this is great news for the dev community if it means that the Nexus Updates are indeed coming from google. As we have come to terms with HTC just doesn't release source timely and with that in mind slows us down considerably. Now if Google is handling the updates they don't need to listen to HTC they can just post the source for the Nexus variant and we can build off that (not me I mean you) . This in theory should make getting AOSP roms built much faster and much stabler overall. because Even though our devs are great and our community is great JB will never exactly be 100% there. With this though we should see quicker builds, more stable builds, and increased longevity of our device.
I am excited, this looks good for us, and HTC. I know many of us came from the DINC and we all basically had the same idea about the Rez. I love this phone, but during the time I have had it HTC just seemed to be getting worse(along with verizon) but as of late I have been impressed. They seem to be really trying and the one is a combo of great design and great hardware as they always do. So I think this may be enough to keep my HTC loyalty from straying to a galaxy far far away.
Google never had to listen to the phone makers. The problem they had was with Verizon when they told Google CDMA was closed sourced and all updates had to go through them first. Anyone who owns a Verizon galaxy nexus knows how slow updates came when compared to their gsm counterpart. Any Google phone has nothing to do with the makers of the phone when it comes to the software.
Don't even try to compare the nexus line with the iPhone. Most people buys a nexus phone because you can root and customize the phone to their liking. Also to have updates to come quickly. People buys I phones for the name and that's it. Don't compare apples to oranges.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using Tapatalk 2
Only so many users are looking to root the average end user is not looking for hacking capabilities. They are looking for an experience that is taken care of for them. Thats what the Iphone used to be, and that's what Android with Jelly Bean has become. People are moving to android for more reasons than hacking. They may be two different OS's, and two different Manufacturers but Google's nexus line is becoming mainstream now. There is no denying that. I know tons of people with Iphones that have bought a nexus 7 and really "enjoyed the interface" meaning Android is now as and more polished than the previous smartphone overlords at apple. Android is becoming a more powerful OS on its own premise than manufacturers and OEM skins.
Thats just my take though
