Previews? Yeah a bunch. Reviews? No.... - Motorola Droid RAZR

How long will we have to wait until Engadget or GSM Arena release some real stuff about the device?

I'm guessing motorolla have not paid anyone to do reviews or given out review units, that's some shut advertising. I have been searching for reviews for awhile aswell. I want to see real world camera samples

To quote Anandtech "Motorola tells us the RAZR uses the same 8MP rear camera sensor as the Bionic"
They have a review of the Bionic on the same site (sorry I can't post links yet).

You're being serious? Those pics looked really good to me. Excellent color and detail.

Pics look nice...especially the macro of that pink flower. At the images full size it looks crisp and detailed. I cant say the same for my Arc S which destroys detail beyond oblivion.

even review maker said "You can see a test of this below, along with test camera shots — I’d say they’re pretty washed out" and i can see the same... video is just lol
2 pics of flowers are really good, and i really hope he shaked his hand while shooting the rest of pics

The camera test would have been best done a nice sunny day. The weather in those photos looks overcast which is why it may look overblown and grey. If there's exposure adjustment then it doesn't matter. With my arc you have to adjust the exposure to Atleast -3 to stop the exposure blowing out.

well, any ways, device looks pretty awsome (for me it is the most beautiful android device)... and it got not bad specifications.
let's hope we will get strong support from developers

The colors are washed out. And it seems that it increases ISO/noise in badly lit conditions (image of the coke bottle). I'm not that impressed.

You shouldn't expect too much from from any phone camera with less than ideal lighting. Need more reviews of the camera with different subjects and compare to the iPhone 4s and gs2.

would love 2 see an unboxing video too

Honestly, I have no idea why ppl pay so much attention to the camera. It is supposed to be just an emergency thing and not the main factor making a phone good or bad. Has everyone really stoppedmusing dedicated cameras and started using their phones as cameras for all occasions?

I will say yes and no. I enjoy photography but I don't carry a dedicated camera with me as mine wouldn't fit in my pockets (dslr)
This is where having a phone with a decent snapper comes into play. I'd like a camera phone that can take 'good enough' photos that I can print.
To some it may not matter but to others a phone will replace a low end p'n's

Have to disagree here. It seems most people seem to prefer oversaturated colors. Those pics have excellent looking color balance AND saturation from what I saw.

Atrix Camera Vs Iphone Camera?

Hey is the atrix's camera better than the iphone 4's?
I've read many reviews, and it looks like the atrix 4g's camera is just average.
This is kind of depressing , considering I wanted a phone with a nice camera.
I would ssay the camera is alright, but I saw some comparison pictures today that showed they weren't as good as the iPhone 4's pics.
Of course things like for and saturation can be fixed with a little light edititjng, but who wants to do that right?

Definitely a purple bluish tint. Although that does suck, I will have my Captivate as a backup.

In my experience with the HTC EVO, the auto white-balance in Android, in a word, blows. However, selecting the white-balance for the situation at hand works great.
Comparing the Atrix 4g camera to the iphone 4 camera? To a phone that took how many years to even get a decent camera? And sadly, with as many co-workers of mine who have the iphone 4, I can tell you that it's camera ain't that great. The iphone 4 finally got a 5mp camera. Wow, so impressive... Score one for apple! Why don't we wait and judge the camera quality in real life.

Please lay off the myth that more MP=more quality. The quality of a camera is related to the quality and the size of the lens. I couldn't care less if a phone's camera is 3MP as long as it has a good lens. The iphone4's camera has pretty big lens that's the reason the pictures are very nice for a phone.
Sadly the atrix has a crappy camera, but i am hopeful the purple tint can be fixed in a update.

wow you really are a hater arent you? the iphone 4 camera is actually real good for a camera phone. it's quick to start and takes some pretty good pictures. and ya the atrix 4g is not even out yet; but motorola has been in the camera phone market for years; so they've had even more time than apple to develop a good camera phone. i know your an apple hater; but learn to give credit where it's due; the iphone has many negatives; the camera is not one of them.
I'm just hoping the camera is better than the one I had on my aria.
Cant' remember the last time i thought "you know, that is so awesome i'll take a picture, let me grab my cell phone". None of them take amazing pictures, and if it's worth taking a picture of, i'll grab my real camera.
Cell phone can have the best lens physically possible for that size, and it's still defeated by the dust that collects over it.

your right; no camera phone will take a pic even close to my DSLR; but to be honest with you, the iphone4 takes pics that are good enough if they're just for my computer. the DSLR is bulky and isnt always there when you need it; your phone is usually always with you; so it's nice to have a phone that takes somewhat decent pictures. i remember when i first got my e71 and was so disappointed in the camera; hope the atrix is not the same. but it sure looked similar during engadgets review
Yes it's nice to have for little things, and i use it for that, i'm just saying i've never looked at a cell phone and thought "yes, this will replace my camera"
I'll reserve judgement for when i get mine. Engadget has been proving their incompetence more and more lately, so i put little to no faith in their ability to create fair or accurate tests.
I love having a camera in my pocket at all times but every phone I've ever had has taken disappointing pictures. My touch pro 2 takes alright/almost acceptable shots outside during the day but in low light its not even worth trying. I am looking forward to the led flash on the atrix but I'm sure it will be a while before a phone replaces stand alone cameras for even point and shoot average Joes.
I took this picture a few minutes ago. Let me know what you guys think.

And yes, it was with the Atrix.
Eh, for what I use my camera for (pictures at bars, on the beach, videos of people doing stupid ****), I don't need a 12 mp megashooter that can capture the individual pores on your nose. I'm just happy to finally have a flash on my phone.

My question is this; why is everybody going gaga over the camera in over the camera in the iphone when it took four generations for apple to finally install a halfway decent camera? In reality people should have been booing apple for the 3 phones with lousy cameras.

Those really are very good for a phone.
But, just too many other things I want my phone to do. And I think I am really tied into Android. I am really liking this cloud/mostly open source thing. So going Nokia/Microsoft would be going backwards for me, a former Windows Mobile 5 user. Would that camera and lens combo be great on my EVO 3D? Sure it would but a couple things, I suspect, would have to go.
The 3VO takes just good enough impromptu snapshots for me. If I want keepers, my Nikon D2X and 17-55 mm lens fits that bill.

Well, it is never going to. If you shoehorn a DX/FX size sensor into a phone, you still need the optics to capture that light. At which point you won't carry your phone around with you because the lens won't fit into your pocket.
BTW, if we were to compare the intent of the photos regardless of capture device, they would be subpar. That is, the photographer attempted to do serious macro and landscape work. If we were to judge the photos strictly on that, then they are subpar. But for a camera phone they are good. So what I am trying to say, professional photographs still need professional gear.
Those pics were very impressive. It would be nice if HTC put in camera's of this quality, but the pics the Evo 3d takes are good enough for me.

I said good, not professional. That Nokia camera seems to take the sort of shots I desire.
Anyway, I wouldn't say "never" -- who thought 5 years ago you'd have a phone with 3D capabilities?
Im pretty satisfied with the E3d camera, I give it a 7/10. Of course it could be better but it has exceeded my expectations and is a huge improvement over the E4g camera. Those Nokia pics are really good.
@dfin13 Five years ago I never thought I'd be streaming movies in 1080p on my phone. I think I was using a moto razr V3m, sidekick 3 and then a blackberry Pearl that year.
I've been getting photos pretty close to that good with the Evo 3D. Maybe not quite as shallow DOF but just as sharp. I'll try to post some another day. No time today.

Well I await the day they can change the physics of light and/or how we can capture it. I suspect I will be long gone.
As an aside, a gratuitous unnecessary shot at wedding photographers: If they can get that Nokia to sync to off camera flash, they then will be in heaven. Wedding photogs don't need detail, they apply 20 percent Gaussian blur to everything anyway. With a camera phone they can "connect" with their client even more.
Ducks head, as the lone wedding photog in the forum takes aim..
If I were to be in an exotic place, I'd certainly be using my dslr and not my phone.

Nokia's phones are GREAT shooters. Probably the best when it comes to cameras on a cellphone.
HTC needs to step their game up. Half of it is software, and that sucks. I'm content with it, but a lot of things could be improved.

do you guys think that the amaze have the best camera?

guys a friend of mine just got the motorola razer,
its a really good phone now that i see it more often,
but i was testing our camera with the razor camera,
our have more features witch i think is the only phone and the mytouch slide that have more features on the camera,
well i noticed with both cameras on that the razor have better low light pictures in we were at starbucks this afternoon, and i got both cameras on when i moved these phones sides on the amaze you could see the lights moving fast and on the razor it was smooth, low light was perfect when on the amaze it was kinda yellow
even on the ffc when i moved them the razor looked better than the amaze,
what do you guys think? is it something we could fix on ours maybe a tweak
or its the way the camera was built?
I hate the yellow tone to indoor pictures! You can tell when you go into settings and uncheck widescreen, the image will turn normal for a split second and then go back to yellowish. A tweak would be awesome.
Other than that this camera is fantastic.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
The camera itself on the amaze is better. You just have to do some software tweaking like play around in manual mode with lighting saturation contrast iso etc. And turn auto enhance off.
Also if you're seeing yellow change the white balance in manual mode.
I just went from the MyTouch 4g Slide to the Amaze. Cameras are comparable, and both very good. I think the clarity on the Amaze is a bit better- I took a pic of a book with a post it on it to compare, and could read the handwriting on the Amaze version where it was blurry on the 4gSlide. Slide has markings on the lens, but I can't tell that the optics are any better on the older phone. All in all, very good, very fast camera.
#1 complaint about the Amaze camera is the retarded focusing. It gets even worst in low light. So if you're in a hurry, your first pictures will always be blurry. Best thing you can do is turn off Auto focus, and keep it in manual mode.
I also hate the yellow looking indoor pictures also. It's a decent camera but I wouldn't stay the best.

change the white balance settings in manual mode!!! also they yellowish nature of the picture is party because of the yellowish tint of the amaze screen..you can only tell a picture apart if you look at the same picture taken with two camera's on the same screen

Have been playing with the camera all day today. Compared to iphone5 this shows lot of noise especially in low light. When cmpared to gs3, noise is marginally higher in low light photos. Under good light conditions, this seems to produce most faithful color reproduction.
Just my observation
Yea, I just compared gsiii and DNA cameras, I think gsiii is better most of the time, but not in color reproduction. But honestly, they are both awful.

I went downtown Detroit last night after Dinner, and even though I said that the S3 Camera is better, I'll retract my statement (different thread) after taking some low lights pics. The Low Light Pics on my S3 looked horrible.....but was pleasantly surprised by this camera. I attached a few pictures to show that the pics in low light actually look pretty damn good, especially since it was taken with a Phone, and I was a bit tipsy after drinking too much at Dinner (hands weren't exactly steady).

Damn... I was going to pick up that phone today but after seeing these pics I don't think I am. A good camera is very important to me, maybe I'll get the Lumia 920 instead...
Well, what do you expect from a phone's camera? Whatever the camera's hardware is, if 90% of its settings are controlled automatically, the result is most probably going to suck. In a darker scene, this phone's software may want to bump the ISO higher than another phone's software, hence this noise and lack of detail. But anyway, a different camera app and you knowing how to use it will most probably show better results.
For me, a cellphone's camera is not much more than a barcode scanner.
Exactly. Phone cameras will always suck compared to a quality Point&Shoot. Smaller sensor, few manual settings, and software made by phone manufacturers, not Canon/Nikon. It's fine for a decent landscape shot or portrait on a sunny day but some people just have ridiculous expectations.
People spend thousands of dollars on camera equipment that works well in low light or for fast action. Maybe the iPhone 5 is marginally better than this, but I've played with my family's new iPhones and IMO the camera is still just a phone camera. If I wanted to take a good picture I'd bring something else.
Some comparisons
Some people didn't like my review of the DNA saying that I was too harsh on the 1080p 440ppi display. How could it possibly be worse than the 720p S3 panel? Well, I think these will speak for themselves:
First a short video shot by an iPhone 4S...DNA vs S3 playing Underworld Awakening. It's a bit hard to show how much the S3 dominates because it's a video of video playback, but the most accurate part is when Selene and Michael are kissing. You can see the skin tone is MUCH better:
http://db.tt/Z597Hcuc
Then the friend with the iPhone 4S and I went out and took some shots. He's taller than me, so the angles are a bit off, but you get the idea. 4S is on the left, DNA on the right:
http://db.tt/edmZQvMD
http://db.tt/cBAcLDwo
http://db.tt/9sHcE6yO
http://db.tt/hORDltQq
http://db.tt/G3pabYog
As you can clearly see, the DNA gets smoked when it comes to color and brightness. Either I have a bad panel or sensor or this camera/video playback is just simply inferior right out the box.

Don't forget-I was NOT really holding the camera steady (Tipsy), but my spouse had my S3 and the DNA's pics actually look better in those low-light shots than on the S3. I need to go to the Conservatory and take some daylight shots of all the tropical plants. THAT'S where I usually take my dSLR and even when I took the S3 there, the pics came out great, popping colors, etc.... Let's see how the DNA can handle those.
The difference is amazing!!!

Well no camera will ever be like buying a nikon but getting normal point&shoot quality pics isn't much to ask for, nokias are able to achieve it, seems to be just a part of the phone being skimped on. Nothing to stop me frfom buyin though, they are "good enough"

As you can clearly see, the DNA gets smoked when it comes to color and brightness. Either I have a bad panel or sensor or this camera/video playback is just simply inferior right out the box.

Dude, something is definitely wrong with your lens. Half those pictures look flat out BLURRY. There are a bevy of example shots from the DNA, just google some and take a look. I'd upload some of my own if it werent for the fact they're already out there. Those pictures you took look like something my 2001 blackberry pearl took.

Z2 Camera ability to capture fast moving objects

As the title indicates I am interested to see what people who own the Z2 feel about shutter speed in auto 8mp wide mode and also the cameras ability to Freeze motion both indoor and outdoor shots.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has a G3 as I have one on pre-order and also how the camera speed compares to the M8 super speedy camera.
I have watched loads of reviews and the time it takes from pressing shutter to the camera animation / taking seems a little slow but not many reviews talk about this subject.
The reason I ask is I have fast moving kids
Thanks in advance.

Ive found that superiour auto doesnt always work but when it does the snapspeed is very rapid with minimal bluring
Z2 can record at 120fps maximum so there is video recording (slow motion edits are fun to play with)
3200 max iso (higher =faster snap)
Z2 does get a little warm when using the camera
I dont own the other two devices so my reivews/info is from 20 mins of experiance
The M8 has a alittle better due to the dedicated HW however pictured dont look as sharp and vibrant
The G3 i havnt seen much of aside hearing that focusing hardly ever fails and the sharpness of the camera is perfect
Id say look for camera shootouts

Thanks for reply. I like camera shootouts but they never focus (lol) on the fast moving subjects and concentrate on low light and daylight shots.

I find that camera shootouts are hopeless for reflecting real world use (if I see another macro shot of a pink flower i'm gonna explode!).
I bought the G2 a few months ago based on the positive reviews of the camera (all landscapes and flowers of course) and boy did I end up regretting that! G2 shutter speed was woeful - it was impossible to take a good picture of my kids when the lighting was anything less than absolutely perfect. Also, the G2's noise reduction algorithm meant that even if your kids do stay still for a second, they'll end up looking like an oil painting (in less than good light).
Also the video on the G2 was shocking too - really contrasty in good light and very bad in low light - audio wasn't good either
I ended up selling the G2 and going for a Z2, and I have to say I'm very happy indeed - camera is much better than the G2 - shutter speed for capturing kids is about as good as you'll get on a phone. Video is brilliant too (its digital stabilisation is the best I've seen). In low light, the Z2 does very well indeed. There's a bit of noise, but I'd much prefer that to my kids looking like they have plastic faces!
Anyway, the G3 camera *looks* better than the G2 , but I was so disappointed by the G2 that I don't know if i can even trust the reviews as they aren't really focussed on my (and your) typical use-cases.
Anyway, that's my tuppence. I know how important it is to capture memories of the kids and I have to say the Z2 hasn't let me down.

Really helpful. Thanks very much. What is the time from when you press the shutter from it actually taking a pic. HTC and g3 are super fast but z2 appears to have a small delay ?

I've taken a few photos from moving cars and they almost always turned out extremely clear. I was very impressed

Took some pics of my son running around and kicking a football about and they all came out clear even shots with ball in the air and him running.

Wow. That's pretty good to hear. Could anyone please post samples of fast moving stuff. Would love to see a dog running being frozen or if someone could bounce a tennis ball and try to capture it whilst it's in fast motion ...not at the top of the bounce where it stops in mid air. Still trying to make a decision between this phone and g3 which I preordered. Not very confident that the g3 camera is going to be better than the Z2 ... Still deciding. Thanks for all the help.

The delay is probably because it re-focuses before it takes the picture. Fortunately the dedicated camera button comes in handy here because you have the ability to half-press the shutter button which will focus and lock the focus until you do a full-press. Means that you can be much more certain that what you see when you press is what you get when the photo is processed.
You can actually acheive the same result with the on-screen buttonby first pressing it (which locks focus) and then unpressing it, which will fire the shutter.

Thanks. I went and had a good test of the camera in 3 UK today. I found that half holding the hardware shutter key then fully pressing it was effective. I tested it instore but found that when I waved my hand back and forward and tried to capture it in a still image of struggled a little. If I didn't half hold the shutter to lock focus I found auto focus was not that quick compared to m8 and s5. Not bad but not as quick. Timeshift is excellent and overall I think camera was quite good. I always buy phones SIM free but I would only pay 450 for one. It's currently £550 which is steep when the other handsets are around 400 now. Waiting for a good deal.

For me the focus speed is much, much less important than the shutter speed. It could take a second to focus (it doesn't, obviously) and I still wouldn't care that much as long as it was able to freeze the action.
I bought mine about a month ago in store from 3 UK for £459. Price must have gone up since then. £550 is definitely quite steep.

Came from a G2. Really liked it but i just couldn't live with the camera. Such a disappointment. Before that I had a Note 2, which was very good. Excellent camera. I find the pictures with the samsungs are a bit sharper which I have to admit I preferred. Z2 pics have a bit less sharpness to them. I'd take the Z2 camera all day long though as it's better in low light than the note 2.

This is exactly my case. Have a g2 to and can't capture nothing moving. Is a bit better after a few camera mods but is not ideal. I will buy z2, was a bit worried about camera overheat but I think I will try it anyway.
