[Q] Need advice on rooting + installing ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, i have now bought a SGS2 coming from the Desire community. My phone is due later today and it will be rooted + custom ROM installed straight away.
I have been installing ROM's etc on my desire for ages and the whole principal is not new to me, however i just wanted to get my facts straight here before i jump right in as it does seem quite a bit different here!
Ok, i have this guide here to root:
[19.10.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4
It all seems very straight forward and it installs CWM4 so all good. Where i am a little confused though, is that it says unless you flash another kernel which has CWM then you will lose it? This is new to me as on the Desire you could flash different kernels all day but it would never lose my CWM?
So if i then flash a custom ROM say this one for example:
Sensation ROM
..its implies that it doesnt touch the kernel?? - Is that correct? Does the ROM's for SGS2 not have a particular kernel included? - If so thats something for me to remember from here on!
All i want to do is root, install different ROM's and see what one i like best but keep CWM all the time as i am very used to it!..
Now i did see this thread:
SGS2 Easy Rooting Toolkit(zergRush Exploit)
Now it seems very easy to root on this method but no mention at all of CWM - so can i use this method and then install CWM? - I couldnt find how to do that though
As you can see i have done some research and i hate asking silly questions, but i just want to make sure i understand before i start!
Thanks in advance all!

I'm curious about this too. I just rooted with the zergbrush method that you mention on my Galaxy S2, but I can't get ROM manager to work. Do we need cf-root for the CWM to be installed? I'd probably try the cf-root method if that's the case, since I want to backup current ROM before flashing with anything else.

Well i think by the lack of replies that it may have been a dumb question , so i will use the cf method and just carry on reading the various threads..

I haven't heard ofa custom ROM that ships with a kernel withouth CWM installed, just because it would be really stupid.
The only thing you should be warned of is the difference between custom ROMs that are based on samsung firmware (touchwiz interface) and AOSP ROMS (like CM7 and MIUI). I tell you this becasue most Samsung based ROMS come with a CWM version that is not compatible with AOSP ROMs so in order to flash an AOSP ROM you'll have to flash a kernel via ODIN that comes with a non modified version of CWM. That said, you won't be having any problems.

THis is exsctly was I was refering to earlier. ROM manager DOESN'T work with CWM version installed with cf root kernel, since cf root kernel comes with a version CWM modified specifically for SGS2 devices. If you want to use ROM manager you'll have to flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693
Anyway there is an app called CWM manager that was developped for using with the modified CWM (cf root). You can find it in the market, it may be your replacement for ROM manager.
EDIT: CWM manager app isn't in the market but is included with the cf root kernel. So if you flash the cf root kernel you'll find the CWM manager app in your app drawer.

Grab odin,
Put phone into download mode,
Put a kernel that has cwm into PDA section of odin. (should be a .tar file)
Plug in phone, flash.
Plug phone into computer, move VillainRom 3.0.zip onto root of phone.
Unplug phone.
Reboot phone into CWM recovery.
Install villainrom.zip from CWM menu (install zip file from sd etc)
All done.
Custom rom, rooted and running latest 2.3.5 android.

This might sound stupid but rather that than knacker my phone completely.
I have successfully rooted and flashed a custom rom, and I'm happy with it but for future reference and to double check before messing up my phone, can I flash any rom?

[Q]

I have rooted my S2 with zergRush instead of CF-Root and as a result, all I have is root and no goodies. I would like to try out some ROMs but from what I can tell I need ClockWorkMod Recovery installed instead of the default recovery. The thing is, I can't get my head around how I go about doing that. I've seen something called ROM Manager which seems to offer what I want but I'm hesitant because I'm new to all this.
Is ROM Manager's "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option the way forward?
rom manager is no good on the i9100 search for cwm.apk. Install a rooting kernel, there are plenty, they will give you everything you need ie sandbox and clockwork.

Hello again .
Since there's no CF-Root for your exact kernel, Chainfire's thread suggests using the closest match which would probably be CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_KJ3-v5.0-CWM5.zip from [07.11.2011][CF-Root 5.0] KE*, KF*, KG*, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8, KJ1/2/3 - su+bb+CWM4/5.
There's a few ways you can get that onto your phone since you're already rooted, without increasing the custom binary counter. One option is Hellcat's kTool, which would require you to extract the zImage from the thread earlier to /sdcard/. Another choice would be Chainfire's [28.11.2011] Mobile ODIN v1.20 [ROOT]. Finally you could use the original method you used when you first soft-bricked your device, but using the above zImage instead of a Galaxy Note one .
Oinky, I have gone the route of using kTool which I've already installed shortly after posting this thread. I'd read somewhere about backing up the EFS partition.
I now have CWM 5 on my device. I have done a complete backup, poked about in /system/media to change my boot animation using a few adb/shell commands and now I think I'll download Cyanogen
I don't know what's happened to the title of this thread because it seems to be empty, and my original reply to you seems to have disappeared
Just flash cf root for your firmware in Odin or from your phone using chainfire's 'mobile Odin lite' found on xda.
It will also install the cwm app for easy flashing.
Edit: After posting saw your post about getting it sorted. Wasn't there a minute ago but it shows time as over an hour earlier. And yeah, title was also there but not now. Should come back soon I think.

Suggestion needed what to do after rooting.

Alright this is not the question you think it is! After rooting from THIS THREAD, I already googled and installed Link2SD, ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, Super Manager, BusyBox, Quick Boot and SetCPU. I have tested all of them except Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
What I am confused is, CF-Root and ClockWorkMod Recovery. My plan is definitely to install Latest CWM v5 so that I can apply CM7 later (at least after more 5 months till I'm working on one development project related to Maps & GPS of Android platform). But as I heard, some themes & customizations needs CF-Root from THIS LINK. Which i find quite confusing how to apply. My questions are:
1) How to apply CF-Root? Please explain steps and Give me Attachments to download. Will my device work same as right now? Because I need my device to run fully so that I can test my written android applications directly via USB Debugging.
1-A) Do I need to unroot before applying CF-Root? If yes, what about the soft links of apps I have made into SD Card through Link2SD?
1-B) Will CF-Root include CWM?
2) Suppose I have CF-Root or CWM installed successfully and what happens to my stock recovery? Is there any way to keep it backed up so that When I need to send it to service station they wouldn't know about it? (By the way, what is the Stock Recovery image's location?)
3) Please also give some suggestions which you think I should keep in mind. I want to keep my ace as close to stock as possible. I also don't know about how to take snapshot of current ROM from Custom Recovery Mode and of Applications from Titanium Backup so that if anything could go wrong I could recover from CWM.

remove rom manager for god sake.. rom manager will brick your phone .. search before you do anything.. thousands of people have destroyed their phones due to rom manager.. so remove it as fast as possible!!!!!!!
next time do things that you know!
Thanks for your suggestion buddy. I know it bricks smartphones.. But also it doesn't work without CWM so I could not use it.
Thanks for quick suggestion.
EDIT:
I highly admire your suggestion and just removed it.

Please please please CMIIW.
Now to answer your questions, but firstly:
CF-Root is a kernel, adapted by the awesome ketut.kumajaya. CMW is a custom recovery. I'm saying this because I'm getting the impression that you think CF-Root and CMW are the same thing.
1. Most recent custom ROMs already provide CF-Root, so once you install the ROM, you'll have CF-Root.
1.a. No. At least, I don't think so, because flashing a kernel/ROM doesn't require root access as a dependancy
1.b. Not to my knowledge. I've been using CF-Root for so long, I forgot what the stock kernel feels like.
2. You know what? I actually have no idea. The only way I can think of to restore the stock recovery is by flashing a stock ROM via Odin. If you take it to a service counter, I doubt the counter will notice, but I would be pretty doubtful for the people who actually service your phone.
3. If you want it to be as close as stock ROM, use the stock ROM; it's that simple!
But if you want to use a custom ROM with the closest resemblance to stock ROMs, I would recommend the GingerReal ROM; it's essentially stock ROM, spiced up with performance tweaks.
3.a. You can do an entire system backup (Nandroid backup) with CWM. Just boot into CWM (hold Power+Home button when the phone is off), and choose "backup and restore" > "Backup" and wait. To restore, do the same things, except pick "Restore"
3.b. Doing a Titanium Backul is... complicatedly simple to answer. I'd recommend you to look up their FAQ or something.
Hope that helps!

Hello adeklipse,
First of all thanks for replying. And sorry I have messed up to explain my question more clearly... But, I do perfectly understand difference between two of those. CF-Root is custom kernel and CWM is custom recovery mode which provides a lot more facilities that stock recovery wouldn't.
First of all, I am on Stock ROM 2.3.4 DDKQ5 and I want to stay on it without flashing ROMs. Because I need my phone working super fine till I complete my project of android application development.
In what I am confused is, I want to apply some themes/bootanimations which according to what I read, requires CF-Root (which already covers root, Super User, CWM and BusyBox)... I have all of them except CWM in my phone.. What I think of a possibility that I could just apply CF-Root and use themes etc. which automatically will install CWM helpful for me taking snapshots of stock ROM as backup before I change even theme.
My question is: Chainfire's Post says different method to apply CF-Root and Ketut.Kumajaya says different method to apply CF-Root. However, I understand only the method which says go into recovery mode and apply update. But that post fails how CWM 4 automatically booted.
I want to be on safe side asking proper procedure before I proceed.
Also, ChainFire says his custom kernel is tested on "stock Gingerbread XXKPH, XWKPN, and DXKPB" which I assume are stock firmwares of different regions. So another question about compatibility in my region's (India's) stock firmware.
Thanks
U can theme your stock rom without root just copy th systemui apk and frameworkres apk to pc extract them change items and your done

Chainfire's method invloves flashing via Odin if i saw it right.
Ketut's method is of flasihng CF-Root via recovery
I recommend flashing via recovery, its safer, easier and faster.
Don't worry, theres nothing such as Firmware compatibilty, its all about stability and perfomance.I am from India too and is using KPH firmware which is European firmware.I syggest you flash the KPH firmware, its the most widely used firmware. You would not face any problem if you flash another region's firmware.Flashing a different firmware is not easy atleast in my opinion. You just need Odin to do that.I suggest you read hubix's step by step detailed tutorial on that.

Thanks.. what I don't understand is there are bunch of files under Ketut's attachment. Which ones to apply in recovery mode and in which order??
Please help me out with that.
Also, if there's any bug like Wi-Fi or anything else pesters me, how would I revert it back to original custom ROM?
PS: I have just rooted my phone. CWM is not installed yet. Hope it will be installed by CF-Root directly.
If you have a bug,you could always restore a backup by using CWM.
I suggest you flash CWM before you flash cf-root.
About the files, ask in ketut's thread
Seriously I never tried cf-root. huh prawsome should i try it oR should I stick to oc kernel of ketut?

hey every1 call me hatcher, soo many pages of info didnt know where to start also, most of you will think im an idiot probably asking simple questions! here goes:
bought my sgs2 and love it to death only had it a week and its on orange , i went ahead and rooted my phone using odin 3 and s2 root. i decided to install an original secure kernel again. all seems good, but i didnt know what kernal was is the best? and is it the whole firmware thing? my current android version is 2.3.4 is this the newest and best because i saw something on the web about ics 4 or something. went onto kies and no update was found so maybe that is the latest official, but then i was confused about it saying u have to root again after ics. so yea if anyone could give me a heads up it will be great.
basically i want my phone rooted but running the latest OFFICIAL version with updates available thanks.
did download the newest kernel on this site but phone didnt boot so reverted and thinking there is more to this, dont want to break my phone!! thanks
also another really random question if any1 can answer does powervr plugin meant to take soo long for loading on shadow guardian for example thanks very much, soory for bad punctuation and grammer my english is not perfect yet
just realised that kernel 4.03 i downloaded is 8 mb and another ics 4.03 was 300 mb! really getting confused about os, firmware kernel etc and dont want to miss anything!

Your latest firmware should be ICS 4.0.3, (you can flash ICS 4.0.4 official/custom rom!) not gingerbread 2.3.4! You can download (after registering!) your "OFFICIAL" firmware/rom from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona Just choose your region/network/firmware, & then flash with odin 3 again! This will unroot you because you'll be flashing original stock firmware, so you will have to root again with your rooting method of choice! I personally prefer to root using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 to just keep the latest OFFICIAL stock rom on my device but still have root! Also, using this method wont give you the yellow triangle on each reboot because you're not flashing a kernel to root your device! If you ever need to put your phone in for repair under warranty & your flash counter in download mode doesn't say "No" (0), then they'll possibly charge you for it, as you've flashed your device ! Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22463153#post22463153 to reset it (ONLY FOR USE ON ICS ROMS!!), but make "SURE" the app gives the "EXACT" same count that it says in download mode, or you could potentially HARD BRICK your expensive toy! The warnings are there to be read, good luck!
thamkyou for your swift and informative reply.
so did kies not update when u have rooted your device?
if so i take it you have to manually flash to the newest firmware everytime a new release comes out?
is this the only thing i need to worry about with updating the firmware no other donloads or auto updates im missing, because like i said i saw a firmware update that was 300mb and i cldnt find anywhere online official kernely/firmware builds, and it seems that a simple flash of 8mb or so updates everything? i saw people talking about connecting via kies to update firmware and it was a big 300 meg file!
thanks for your links also mate.

Whenever you root, kies gives you the "wrong firmware to update" error! No worries though, because YES, you can always flash the latest firmware or custom roms manually! This is usually done through Odin 3 or CWM (clockworkmod recovery!) If done through Odin 3, your flash counter in download mode escalates/goes up, & the only way you can reset it for warranty purposes is using Triangle Away (link in my previous post!) which can be DANGEROUS!! Or if you flash roms through CWM then your counter's not affected also! The majority of people however, prefer to use Mobile Odin on the Galaxy Sll, as flashing with this app also does not give you the boot up triangle warning, or affect your download mode counter! Here's the link to Chainfires lates free version here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 Or if you appreciate the work the devs (for this particular app, Chainfire!) do for us in this forum, you can obtain the "PRO" (paid/donate!) version here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&hl=en
thanks for the reply again crock daddy! mobile odin sounds awesome,
i see i was getting confused because whenever i have ran kies, it has never asked/said anything about updating firmware, guess ive installed an older firmware version than what my phone came with oops lol. i guess im all good to go, cant believe what this handset can do! and yes i will be donating to the clever gits, chainfire is insane, thanks to that i have shadowguardian dead space and backstab working
thanks for your time again peace out.
right flashed to ics, love it, u sir are a legend....
BUT i tried rooting and it said my kernel was secure thus no temp root access. so closed s2 root down. (would this of done any damage or corrupted data btw?)
tried the cwm zip in sd card method, but cldnt find su zip, also read that it doesnt give full root access or sumin. (again would going into clockwork recovery have done any damage because i didnt complete the rooting process-cldnt find su file so just shut it down)
and im guessing there are no insecure kernels for ics yet?
sorry to be so pedantic and worrying about silly things lol.
also have had a couple of jitters and games completley freezing since ics is this common and or should i reinstall games?
this is the kernel version im using for an orange sgs2 19100p

When you root using the cwm & superuser.zip you won't see the su.zip in recovery mode! You have to put an sd-card in your device (external sd-card!) & put su.zip on that rather than your internal sd-card! that way recovery sees it! & YES you do gain full root! (read the whole thread! : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719)
If Superuser shows up in your app's, then that's the indication you need to tell you that you have root!
Either this method, CF root method or any other method will allow you to install custom ROMS, but there is an advantage and a disadvantage for both.
:;This method: Doesn't affect custom rom counter or triangle, but CWM recovery is not permanent. (but once you flash a custom ROM that has a different kernel with CWM recovery included then your rom counter will still be unaffected and whatever CWM recovery is included in the custom ROM will become your new permanent recovery)
You can still use CWM recovery to flash stuff with this method, by using clockworkmod (Rom manager!) & booting straight into CWM recovery & doing everything you need to do from there!
This method keeps the stock recovery, so that if you have to send your phone in for a repair, the repairer doesen't see that you have a custom recovery (CWM recovery!) which tells them you have rooted your device & void your warrenty!
:-CF-Root Method: Flashing the CF-root kernel (or ANY insecure kernel!) with Odin will increase your custom ROM counter, which can be cleared with TriangleAway.apk (only on ICS). But Chainfire has warned that it is dangerous and can permanently brick the device (i've used it on XWLP7 ICS 4.0.3 and it works perfect.)
I've used both methods, but I found this method easier and generally safer.
As for some of your games freezing on ICS, try going to settings/developer options & try checking "Force GPU rendering" to see if that makes a difference!
The latest official Samsung firmware for Orange here in the UK is: I9100PBVLP6 (ICS 4.0.3!) so you do have the correct one, but I don't think there's an insecure ICS kernel available for that version as of yet!

[Q] Flashed CF-auto root pda file but miss the cwm.. reflash cf-root?

Hi my fellow android users,
Been searching for a while on flashing roms. I thought i'll give a go at the cf-auto root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 . After i installed successfully with root and all I proceeded to get my rom, particularly the liquidsmooth rom 4.1.2.
After a moment of dumbness i realized (i hope i am correct :|) that the developer doesn't want CWM because of the flashing issues etc and I'm very new to the .md5 format stuff. A lot of the roms I like (such as the cm10, akop,) instructions tell me to install via cwm which i am quite familiar with.
Please, if you happen to know, :
1) is it safe to directly install CF-Root 6.4 (non auto version) with odin directly over my samsung sIII (which i already just installed the autoroot)? If i brick this phone I will have a very bad year as i will go back to my HTC desire bravo due to lack of $$
in otherwords, should i just overwrite the non auto root over so that I can have the CWM in my phone? I'm unable to ask in the CF-root thread because of my username rights..
2) I've been searching that through ODIN you can install and flash roms. However, I haven't been able to search successfully of a link or page on flashing custom roms in the md5 format etc... all I could find is flashing the new jellybean from samsung ( which can be updated via kies actually) any of you have any experience in flashing custom roms eg: cm10 etc through odin?
p.s apologies in advance if I created a repeat thread or asked something silly.. go easy on me guys

[Q] Ripping out my hair over rooted S3!

Ok, this is my very first post!
After 2 days of research (and maybe wrong word usage), and reading through the FAQ's in the GS3 Section, and carefull consideration and preperations for possible n00b harshness, *sigh* I decided to post. I just bought a device from someone and it is rooted. YAY customization, boo because I have no idea the language used around rooting. I've read a guide found on google about rooting language for beginners and the helped, informing me of the basics but I'd reaaaaaaly like to explore all of the benefits of rooting, however I can't even figure out what ROM im running! I don't want to 'delete' the super user (software?) and have to root all over again but it's like someone left a baby on my doorstep! I'm utterly clueless as to how I can use root to my advantage and it's very frustrating! The following issues are present at the moment:
How to figure out what ROM running?
How can I maximize the benefits of being rooted?
If it helps, I do have Root Manager installed, my kernel version is:
3.0.31-329968

Let me know if any other info is needed. I've prepared myself for any feathers I may have ruffled in posting this. If these are questions answered please guide me to the answers. You guys are amazing and I appreciate ANY feedback!
1. settings - about device
2. use root apps
Root is pretty much granting Admin rights to the program requesting it. Be very careful once root rights are given the app can do just about anything it wants.
If I were you I would install Clockworkmod Recovery (if it`s not installed already) and then wipe data/cache and then flash a new ROM and doing everything from the start. I would have my trust issues when buying a rooted phone from someone. At least when you do everything yourself then you know exactly what you are dealing with.

Now when I'm wiping data cache I know:
Hold the power
Volume up
And home button
To get into recovery mode, after that I'm a little hesitant to explore. Could you expand please and thank you.

The problem is that I don`t know what recovery do you have. If it`s the stock one or if it`s the ClockworkMod Recovery. You can not flash ROMs or other stuff like custom Kernels with the Stock Recovery. You need ClockworkMod for that.
I would download the Siyah Kernel, flash it through Odin and afterwards through the Stweaks app (you can get it from the playstore) I would install the Siyah Custom Recovery which is based on ClockworkMod recovery. That`s how I did it when I got my S3
You can get the Siyah kernel here: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
You could also just flash the ClockworkMod recovery with Odin from here and then just flash a custom ROM:

There are multiple ways
Also what Android Version are you running right now?
