Hey guys and girls,
I'm coming back to the smartphone world - had a Droid and an EVO. Loved them both. I see that the Photon's bootloader is unlocked - but it drops 4G access, etc.
is this ever going to change? with the release of the source is development for the phone going to pick up?
I cannot wait any longer to get a phone. At this point my choices are EVO 3D or a Photon, (and maybe returning either for a SGS2 once it releases and I see how it fares)
If you were in my shoes, had to get a phone tomorrow - would you get the Photon or the EVO 3D?

Photon hands down. Out of the box quality is superb. The 3 d is a gimmick phone.

I'm not worried about the 3D - I'm worried about the future of the device. It seems the dev community for the EVO 3D is much larger at this point and I'm worried that development for the Photon won't get as far because of the issues with 4G being dumped, etc.
I've owned motorola and htc devices before, like i said, and I liked both - I just want to make sure that I can customize it through ROMs and still have full functionality.
Is the Tegra 2 better than the SnapdragonX2?
Nokia 1100 ftw.

In my opinion, those reviews come from EVO 3D and wannabe GS2 owners. Haters are gunna hate.
As an analogy, I believe that part of the issue is that standard def signals are being put into an HD screen. You know, a standard TV actually looks better than an HD TV with a standard signal because the HD TV shows the flaws. Just my2cents.
Not to mention the inability of Samsung to stay on top of development for their products...terrible in my opinion...

defiantly Photon, Evo 3D has horrible service, and the Photon just runs smoother in my opinion
For what its worth I traded my Evo3D for the MoPho, mainly because of battery life. I've been thrilled with it. MoPho vs SG2... well, thats a different issue.
I think my main complaint with the MoPho is that the USB and HDMI ports cannot be used when using the kickstand. I know why they did it, to sell more docks, but its annoying as hell and makes the stand damn near useless IMO. Got rid of Blur almost immediately with launcherpro so no problems there. The thing has already been rooted, easily, and the kernal release its a matter of weeks before ROMs start to land..
For sure go with MoPho over the evo3D. People who say that the 3D's battery life "isn't that bad" are lying to your face.

Photon 4G HANDS DOWN!
First off, let me preface this by stating I am a die-hard EVO 4G backer! That phone has been the best phone (so far) I have ever owned! Hands down! Now, I am a business owner and require a sturdy, reliable, functional phone to conduct my daily business.
I have owned a Samsung Nexus S, Photon 4G, and an EVO 3D. They all have their issues. But in terms of signal strength, call quality, loudness, speed, battery life, and overall functionality, FOR ME... hands down...the Photon 4G performed the best.
The EVO 3D is fast and pretty but for what I need it to do, it sucks! I have had random reboots, weak signal strength, call drops, the speaker quality sounds like crap compared to the photon, BATTERY LIFE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!, and to top it off, I use square to collect payments from clients and when I connect it, the 3D thinks it is headphones and starts to play my music player! Let's just say some clients aren't really big Tupac fans as I am! Then when i am finished with the transactions and unplug the square device, I can ONLY talk to people using the speaker phone UNTIL I reboot the phone.
I love HTC from a development standpoint, but rooting and dealing with the 3D doesn't take on the same amount of ease as the OG 4G did. I love trying out different ROMs but from a business standpoint, I need functionality and dependability. I know some of you may say 'maybe you just had a lemon'. Let's just say that after the third 3D from different lots, I would say 'nyet'!
The Photon is not without its issues but for my requirements, Motorola Photon is my choice. Launcher pro took care of the motoblur issue. I will say this...the moment there is a AOSP ROM out for the photon, I will be getting it!
I loved the Samsung Nexus S for its smoothness. Didn't have major issues although the signal strength was a little weak and the loudness (ear piece, ringers, and speaker) sucked. Looking forward the the Epic 4G touch (SGS2)!
Regards,
Robert

This is the Photon forums so yea.....get a Photon.
As for the 4g, source code has only been out for a day. It is being worked on and for sure will soon have custom kernels and unlocked bootloader w/everything working. Peeps just need to have a little patience. This phone got root almost right out of the gate not to mention we already have custom recovery. From my perspective, developement of the Photon is moving ahead rapidly. Phone has only been out for little over a month.

Amen to that statement.
Yeah, they do have a beautiful screen but considering the number of times that Samsung's dropped the ball in supporting their products after its released with timely fixes and maintenance releases, endless delays for upgrading to the latest Android platform, not to mention being notorious for having a lousy GPS function, I'm a bit surprised that anyone is considering one of their phones as a viable option.
As G W Bush would say, "There's an old saying in Tennessee that we also have in Texas. Fool me once, shame on you.... Fool me, can't get fooled again."
No thanks Samsung. Your beautiful screens are great on televisions. But I don't care to have one on my phone if you can't support them after making them.

I would stick with the Evo 3D. Once you play some 3D games or watch some 3D movies, you will see that it's an awesome feature to have the 3D. If you want better performance and don't care about the 3D features, you can install an AOSP rom. I think the Evo 3D is some of the best hardware out there right now.

Try the EPIC 4G Touch forums as most people only have one phone, and most of the people who frequent the EVO 3D forums have the EVO 3D and not the EPIC.
Good luck to you! I actually just traded back to the EVO because of personal tastes phone-wise but the SGSII is very very nice! I loved It's camera and SAMOLED cannot be beat!

looks like im gonna just stick with it
I've have both. Evo 3D is my choice. In fact I gave my SG S2 to my neice for Christmas. Evo 3D is nicer. Not as snappy but the hardware is real quality.
I recently picked up the Evo 3d, and my dad got the E4GT. I've played with both, and while I will say that out of the box the E4GT does feel much more snappy, the combination of the size, "premium" feel (build quality), ROM options, features, and just overall fun, the Evo 3d wins all day. Plus, I am not a huge fan of Touchwiz, and I love Sense, so it's a no brainer for me. Good luck with your decision!
The epic touch 4g is huge compared to the Evo 3D. I actually wish the 3D was closer in dimensions to the evo 4G. I prefer the wider device, vs taller. The ET4G is both wider, and taller than the 3D.
But to your trade question, you will probably need to pony up some $$ with the trade, as the ET4G has a higher resale value at this time.
@OP I am glad you stuck with the 3D. Here in Atlanta at the Sprint service center they are constantly having issues with the SGSII dropping calls, GPS issues, and random reboots. people have been coming in and trading for the E3D.
I recognize that this may not be across the board, but when Sprint's own techs all have E3Ds and say they wouldn't touch a SGSII, that is an indicator to me.

While my experience is just anecdotal, but my wife and I have the same issues as the ET4G users, and I have a Evo 3D, and she has a Evo 4G. It's completely tower related, for me though, because if I leave the tower covering my house, I have almost no issues. But at home (my work is also on the same tower), I don't receive calls, sometimes texts don't go through, sometimes have no data, dropped calls, and I get random reboots. I'm in the Atlanta area.

Unfortunately, all companies are like this now. I remember HTC had dust under the screen issues with the Hero. Issues with the covering on the buttons coming off. The Evo 4G had light leakage issues, stuck pixels, and the digitizer not attached firmly to the body of the phone (usually only one side was affected). But, it looks like HTC has spent more time on QC on their hardware lately, when I look at my 3D. Now, when we pick a phone, we must choose the one that looks to be the lesser of all evils.
That's pretty much what I did... gave mine to someone I know that wanted the 3D and just paid the $199 for the upgrade on their account and swapped it out. Honestly I hated that I even wasted my upgrade on the 3D after a while... I think I used the 3D features maybe a week or two before forgetting all about em. IMO, pretty much everything was an upgrade but it's all personal preferences. Had I not been having some medical issues right after I bought it I would've returned it though.
And to the person that says Samsung cares about quantity over quality, let's not sit here and act like HTC has done anything to improve the issues these phones have had since the Evo came out. You'd think by now they'd be able to make a phone without the massive light leakage at the bottom but they're yet to even try to fix it. And let's not forget the debacle with the touch pro where probably 1 out of every 3 of them had the keyboard to go dead. And I won't even start on the tons of problems we had with the Thunderbolts. All of these companies are about the money first, that doesn't mean they have to sacrifice anything. Hell no one is more about money than Apple but they still consistently have the best build quality out there.
And personally between the last HTC phones ive had, i've had more problems than i've had with the GS2. But hey, that's just me.

The Epic 4G is just too damn wide. I almost bought it before I held it. The Evo has great dimensions. Plus the low resolution will be annoying.
I have a Nexus S too and the resolution isn't great even on the 4" screen. It'll be awful on 4.5.

I'm eligible for my upgrade in Mid-Nov. I'm on the fence as between the 4G LTE and Samsung GSIII. Or, I could wait a little longer, maybe after new year, and see what is planned for Sprint's new Android lineup (if any).
I had always thought I would just stick with HTC but I am not sure anymore. The fixed battery really scares me. I rely on swapping batteries in my EVO 3D often and I have chargers everywhere as it is. That is really the only thing that makes me consider Samsung.
Anyone who's had a 4G LTE for a while now wish they got a GSIII? How is having a fixed battery?

There are quite a few people who feel remorse over the multitasking issue, where even with most custom ROMs you'll still have the problem that the phone does not multitask properly. This is fixed with AOSP ROMs and I'm sure there will eventually be a legitimate fix for the problem on Sense, but as of now it's something that people have to put up with. I never really noticed it or was bothered by it, but a lot of people here are upset by it so I would keep that in mind.
Buy the Galaxy S III, then trade with me. My EVO LTE is superb. Kept in an Otterbox all of its life.

Never been an issue for me, and many others here and in other forums. As you know, battery life is highly dependant on your particular useage and can vary greatly from person to person.
There are many EVO vs GS3 type threads, but it basically comes down to personal preference. But don't let someone try to BS you into thinking the GS3 is "faster" because it has 2 GBs, lol.
I love the EVO LTE but I have s-off which was Important to me. The current hboots don't have it at the moment.
If that's important to you I'd go with the s3. Or wait for the new nexus which will probably have s3 specs but be straight aosp and guaranteed key lime pie next year.
I am assuming that the trend will continue where the Nexus phone has similar specs to the previous Galaxy S version.

But what is the ETA for the "new Nexus," particularly on Sprint?
A little.
The phone is nice, but it has issues. This is the first HTC phone I've been disappointed with...everyone else hated the 3D but I enjoyed that phone.
The muliti tasking, Wifi constantly dropping, sense weather widget constantly showing thunderstorms, the way Sense is still bloated and laggy at times...that and the useless HTC Hub never offering anything new, or widgets that should be common. I'm just starting to grow tired of it all honestly.
A lot of the problem can be fixed with AOSP roms, but then you lose the one real thing that made this phone, the badass Sense camera we have. I wouldn't say I'm anti Htc or anti Evo LTE..but I am disappointed.

I think it will be closer to when Verizon releases their phone. The last 1 was released in December for them. And I think the Nexus S was released in November of 2010.
So I think by the time your upgrade comes around in the middle of November you will know what's going to happen with the next Nexus phone.
Pure speculation of course.

I have a little remorse. Had an SGIII for about 2 - 3 days, bricked it and got an Evo LTE. It did seem a little faster operating the SGIII, the screen seemed a tad bit bigger, and I kinda miss the little touchwiz "shortcuts." But the Evo feels more sturdy and I had to have the kickstand. As of right now, the SGIII is easier to root but I found Fox fi for my tethering fix and I'll play with some of these launchers on the market til a new root for the Evo comes out.

TBH, a lot of what I heard supports SGIII.
Get it, dont worry about unlocking/rooting. Slap a AOSP Rom on or go with TouchWhiz (which people tend to be liking more than Sense it seems). Then also have the option of swapping an extra battery if you so desire. I dont know, this thread just gave me more questions. I feel even more on the fence.
I do appreciate all the HONEST feedback though. This is exactly what I wanted. TBH, I may just keep the EVO 3D a little longer than anticipated and see how things play out. I dont need the extra CPU power necessarily and I wont be gaining LTE. My 3VO is just how I like it now too...

Why is it that our phones are under rated. I mean seriously? I see so many reports that the GS3 is the best Android phone of fall 2012, I would disagree. Although it is a great phone, I would not think that it is the best, if anything I would say EVO LTE and GS3 would be tied at that spot. Would anyone disagree? This is really irritating me!
Its not underrated, its more like under the radar. Lets face it the EVO is a small name in the industry when you have a device across all carriers which is selling at record numbers. The EVO is viewed more as the little engine that could.

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.
The constant bashing for the LTE issue is not helping it either. Sprint still has not said officially that they are working on a fix with HTC. This phone had LTE issue in the lab before it launched but Sprint needed the phone to launch otherwise they would risk losing many accounts coming off their 2 year with no new flagship phone to go to. So it was rushed out the gate, and HTC/Sprint have tried to fix the modem twice with an OTA, but have failed both times. My hope that a 3rd round will correct the issue is getting weaker by the day.
I think I'll be taking advantage of the GS3 upgrade on Black Friday and rotating the "EVO Can't do-LTE" to of my other lines that really doesn't care about 4g. Love the EVO's battery life, screen, performance etc, but the LTE issue just hits hard. Kinda like buying a sports car with a nice V8, it looks good, but the manufacturer just hasn't figured out how to get the computer to make all 8 cylinders fire correctly so it's running on 4 cylinders for now.

The difference between HTC and Samsung, I believe, is their market approach.
Samsung has it right. They sell one major phone on multiple carriers, advertise it in ways that appeal to their largest audience (probably 15-35). And they have a few other lower end phones too.
HTC doesn't understand this, I suppose. The One series was halfway there. But then the EVO is too exclusive. Then, to dig HTC deeper into their hole, instead of focusing on marketing and updates for the One series line up, they for some reason think they would come out ahead by spending time and money in development for these new One X+ things.
WTF?
Though I am an HTC fanboy, mostly a Sense Fanboy, I don't deny HTC's bad strategies as a company. If I didn't think TouchWiz looked like something from the Dollar General, I might get a GS3. But what it comes down to when a user chooses a phone today, is what User Interface does that person prefer? Sense? TouchWiz? iOS? BlackberryOS? That is the determining factor, I believe.

i think the evo lte is the best phone out.. not just because i have it but the screen is bangin.. battery life is great.. the lte beats any other phone in quadrants.. linpacks.. antutu benchmarks u name it.. it is funny how the LTE gets NO love at all.. when ever i read write ups on phone tec the LTE never ever gets mentioned.. the LTE is the beast thats nobody talks about.. the gs3 is a dope phone also i just dont like touch wiz at all.. im a HTC guy.. my babys mother has the gs3 i rooted it for her and flashed a few roms on it.. 2 top phones out rite now the evo lte & the gs3!!! :good:
If you ask me, I say this phone is overrated to be honest. This is coming from someone that has owned all 3 of the EVOs. The specs of the phone looks great on paper, but the phone just doesn't perform that well in the real world. Seems like there's more time spent trying to get the phone to run right instead of just enjoying it. HTC failed BIG TIME when they screwed-up the phone's ability to multitask properly. I've been a member of this site for over 6 years and have a very low post count since I've mainly lurked throughout the years. A large portion of my current post count is because of this EVO and trying to get it to run smoothly. This is my second one, btw.
Anytime you have to rely on a web site to fix multiple problems for things that a manufacturer should have made sure were working properly before selling to consumers equals a huge fail IMO. There's a large portion of people on these forums that don't mind spending all of their free time tinkering and fixing their phones, but for an average consumer that leads a busy lifestyle, do you really think they want that kind of hassle, especially if they're not tech savvy? HELL NO!!!

So what do you tell them when they see the S3 with LTE and the EVO LTE stuck on 3G all the time?

The EVO is exclusive to Sprint, they created the brand because the needed a big push to compete with the other service providers. They weren't just trying to out do Apple, never were. The Apple bashing was to help solidify the brand as a recognizable device easily capable of matching the top smartphone at the time. The biggest problem is that the EVO line is Sprint exclusive, its not underrated by any means
Lol...I own both. I love both
Both will be old news within 2 months lol

I agree completely.
I also think the built in kickstand sets the EVO line apart from others . I watch a lot of netflix at work and see other peeps.using books to hold there phone up
I wish it was a bit beefier but its just as strong as the old kick stand and has the built in spring for extra support. I like that u can flip it any way I want and still prop it up
I've been doing a lot of research on both devices over the past few days since I'm out of work and have nothing better to do than apply for jobs and figure out which phone I'm going to get when it comes out. Super lame but there isn't much else to do when your back is shot to hell.
Anyway... It looks to me as if the GS4's mission is to drag other customers to Samsung. For example: steal HTC lovers and convince them to make the switch over to Samsung. I see this because GS4 is pushing FEATURES and things that, for example, the HTC One does not have. But that doesn't make the GS4 'better' than the HTC One. At least... not to me.
The HUGE difference is that the HTC One does NOT have the MicroSD card slot. I don't agree with that but yet it might be a good idea to finally move to cloud storage and get used to it? Either way, I came to the realization that the non-existent MicroSD card slot should not be a deal-breaker of any kind. Especially since you can grab a 32gb MSD for only $20 if you look in the right direction. So, if you think about it, there IS plenty of storage but it won't all be physically present. Kind of cool if you think about it.
Another HUGE difference is that the HTC One will not have an option for battery replacement, extended batteries, or anything alike. I believe that was to boost sales towards accessories and have everyone else (carriers and company's) jump on the same bandwagon. That's because there are now battery packs you can buy to carry around and charge your phone if you really need to. I think that's pretty awesome but I like the idea of carrying an actual backup battery with me instead of charging on the run.
BUT! That sexy casing sure as hell makes up for both of those "HUGE" or "don't really care" differences.
As for screen differences... who can tell which is better on such a small screen? Sure, if you know it just happens to have better specs than you can call it "better" or even "the best" but if the human eye can't even detect the difference than it really doesn't matter.
BUT! You better believe your eyes when you see the battery consumption suddenly plummet.
So why desire those better screen specs, that you won't even notice, and get less battery life? My guess is that you wouldn't...
So why desire all of those features that you will use, much like the rare 3D on few phones, but probably for about a month until you realize they are just a waste of space and a marketing scheme? My guess is that you wouldn't...
So why switch over to the Galaxy S4 of which you will be happy with for a while before you realize your regret on not purchasing the HTC One which is also released earlier so you could've been satisfied even earlier and not made ANY mistakes? My guess is that you wouldn't...
I've come to the conclusion that the S4 vs. One is all about personal preference and the battle becomes a draw. Specs are pretty much the same depending on where you live, what carrier you have, and your own personal wish-list. Samsung did one hell of a job marketing a phone that hasn't had an official release date yet though! It had me wondering which phone I really want. The octacore sounds great but think about how new that technology is, how it make work, if it really is worth it, and that it is just a new idea to processing in *hopes* that it'll provide a little bit more power and better memory management.
I could go on and on about all of the differences, marketing schemes, etc... But I want to see what everyone else is saying (typing) since I don't have THAT MUCH time to spend reading every little detail on the two phones.
What do you guys/gals think?
Which phone do you plan on purchasing if at all?
And why?
I'm aiming towards the HTC One.
Could've sworn I put this in the question section... Can someone move this please? Thanks.
I never needed to replace my battery on the Evo 3D, and I'm still using the same 16 GB card that I had in it. I doubt I'd miss either omission.

Which, unfortunately and historically, will be completely obsolete just a month or two after it comes.

The most comprehensive review/analysis of the HTC One to date. If you want to know EVERYTHING about the One just have a read. Highest award ever given to a smartphone by them. That pretty much certifies it as LEGIT.
I say wait... None of the next gen are really pummeling the current gen flagships.
If I had to choose this year, the SGS 4 under contract or the Dev edition HTC One, off contract.
The one. Sense 5 is great and I'm really liking the dual speakers. I love Samsung Tvs but nor their phones. I could care less about a removable battery or the microsd card slot.

Same here, having stuck with HTC since the Hero, I'm really leaning towards the One.
I'm still undecided. I really hate AMOLED screens.. They have some sort of tint compared to LCD. And i hate that Samsung phones feel cheap and light.
The build of the HTC One is awesome but I alway have cases on my phone. I'm super clumsy.. I drop my phone about twice a week... No joke. I've never had to get a new battery for an HTC phone. SD card slot shouldn't be a problem if I can get 32gb. I've never taken out the memory card out my EVOLTE.
As far as HTC.. I feel they are more of a hassle to root than Samsung. So that is making me want to switch to Samsung. But then again, I've used Sense for 5yrs now and like it.. It's gonna suck to switch.
The things that are most important to me are battery life, screen quality and performance. I'm sure as far as performance there won't be any "real life" differences.
I'm on Sprint and one of those will be my next phone. The possibility of updated Sprint Nexus is also on my mind.. Although farfetched.

I think I am gonna go with s4. I freakin love sense and the build quality of my HTC phones bit I have to say the HTC tends to have more connectivity issues as far as what I have seen.
I can tell u my EVO LTE is pretty inconsistent when it comes to signal and connecting. I don't think it is entirely the network either because even at the house on WiFi my connection seems to hang quite often at the same time I have problems I pick up my tablet which runs off the same WiFi and it runs just fine.
Another reason is Samsung galaxy has such a big following if I try the s4 and don't like it it will be much easier to find me a person willing to swap their HTC for my galaxy rather than the other way around. I doubt anyone will trade my HTC one for a galaxy if I have the same frustrating issues with it.
The freakin black HTC one is one of the sexiest, nice looking phones I have seen in a while though so who knows. My family plan will be out of contract on all 3 lines at the end of the year so I'm not renewing this quarter I will have plenty of time to make a decision. I don't know that I am going to be staying with sprint.

Very interesting posts guys/gals. I appreciate all of the responses. I've been with HTC for quite a while as well. My first was the HTC Hero which, in my opinion, was one of the worst smartphones ever made. Then I went with the EVO 3D which treated me very well up until needing a replacement. I went through 8 of those phones and each replacement was worse than the previous. My batteries started getting shot, my phone would turn off randomly and never come back on, and the digitizer constantly went out. I would've been on my 9th until I decided to grab the LTE. I've only had one issue with this phone which was the service cutting out and never coming back on. I then got it replaced for free so no complaints.
The build of the LTE I think is very poor. Out of the box there was already cosmetic damage and I refuse to use cases since I never drop my phone's anymore. *knock on forum* I'm just having a really hard time deciding what I want to do. I'll probably end up with the HTC One but it'd be nice to switch it up too.
But making the switch either leaves me satisfied for two years or in deep regret for two years.
This is a tough one. The only reason I wanted the S3 was for 1 more gig of RAM. But with both of the new phones sporting quad-core and 2gb of RAM then I almost might as well stick with HTC.
Ugh. Decisions... Decisions...

It's kind of early to judge battery life since the test phones are all pre- production. Many times software will fix things.
I've been really happy with the lte but may wait and see what the next nexus service is and then decide if I'll stay with sprint.
The htc one has received better results in the rf testing than the lte did. So that is encouraging. Should mean better connections for calls and data.

I will be going with the One.
Personally, after being on Sense, I feel like TouchWiz (Samsung's Sense) is designed for children who still need to ask their parents permission for playdates. Totally ugly and way too colorful.
Also, after using Sense 5, I don't ever want to use another OS. It is incredibly enjoyable.
Now think about if we had all the One X and Evo devs working together - I can't imagine anyone would need more options than that.
I am getting a One before May because I am so impressed with Sense on my EVO and I love HTC.

Yeah. Saw that a bit ago. The One only beat it in one category though. However, the differences are that big either. But both of the phones don't have the best battery life.

One... Htc phone make and quality looks superb. Not to mention they change hardware and look so much that it really is a new phone. Unless you want the s3 with a faster processor...(hint s4)
Don't get me wrong. The software features are cool and all but sense widgets give you a reason to have multiple home screens.
Just my 2 cents....

That's pretty much it with the S4. Idk why they didn't change anything with the body. I know there were talks of an S4 mini but... Eh. Maybe the Note 3 is going to be more impressive? I just don't get it. All of the EVO's were different. Even the newest One =P I wish they would've stuck with the EVO name though. Assuming the EVO is pretty much done. The HTC One would've made a great EVO. But whatever. Now when people ask what kind of phone I have I'll say "that One phone." Soft humor.
