Video recording on Titan - HTC Titan

If you look at 720p samples on Youtube, you can tell a few things. First, there is a big discrepancy between the sound in many cases. It goes from hollow and robotic/scratchy to acceptable. I'm chalking this up to the scratchy being stereo and the acceptable being mono. I think I can live with that. It's the first HTC phone I've seen that has actually reached an acceptable level for audio recording. The video, however, is kind of driving me nuts. Unlike in the Sensation/Inspire/Amaze/Thunderbolt/prev gen. which was a bit choppy but frames were detailed albeit very oversharpened with gaudy colors, the Titan seems to buck the usual HTC trend and go with super smooth and blurry, with a sort of bouncy jelly nauseating feel. The gaudy colors seem to have toned down a bit, but are still gaudy, and they traded oversharp for blurry. I really don't know which is better, the old style video recording or the new style. I can make concessions with the video now that the audio recording is acceptable, but I really don't know how much of the jelly effect I can take. If they are using the same camera units on the Mytouch 4G Slide/Amaze with very different results, its could possibly be purely software differences in the Titan. Do you think they would possibly tweak the AT&T version once it comes stateside? Pipedreams...

It may be scratchy because you are rubbing your hand on the second Mic thats at the top by the headphone jack.

meh, i'm not as impressed as i was days ago. i did some 720 and 1080 tests; 720 looks like kinda crappy on the pc and pixelates easily, and 1080 looks better...720 is nice because it's 60fps, though. (actually, this is what i was told..and 720 looks smoother....buuuuuut in windows, ti still says my 720 videos are 30fps?! wtf? any ideas anyone?)
recorded some guitar videos; the video looks good, but the audio is GOD AWFUL. it encodes at 128kbps; that's absolte ****. i set the videos to mono, so maybe that has something to do with it, but idk.
either way, there's random clicks and pops and the frequency of the audio continuously changes, making it sounds like complete ass and there being no consistant guitar tone in it.
then again, this is just a phone that can also make videos, so who am i to complain? lol

honestly, the quality of the audio is really starting to piss me off. 128kbps is NOT ENOUGH for a camera to encode audio, damnit! time to continue with my open ticket to HTC about their ****ty audio.
overall, the audio is INCREDIBLY disappointing. why do they make high quality video, with such ****ty audio? i guess they figure the public doesn't know the difference between 128kbps and 320, which is kind of lame. oh well. guess i'll continue to use my crappy $40 kodak waterproof 720p camera for guitar vids lol
i propose that somehow, app devs or regular devs, we should all look into making the audio record at a higher quality. for example, built in voice memo records at like 96kbps..which is awful. tape recorder, a free app, can record up to 320mbps, which is MUCH better. there's gotta be a way to change that in the built in camera app, or maybe a new app that utilizies 1080p video and can record at a higher bitrate!
the problem with the pixelation is the intense hand movements with the guitar are too much for the phone not to mention the awesomeness of the sound being produced by the guitar is also too much for the phone to handle.
i have not checked out the other videos(just the guitar ones) so no comment on those.
รด_o
hahahahaha now THAT'S a response i can live with
when you watch the 720p outside dog videos, you'll notice some colors seem to "lump" together and pixelate.
did you hear how it sounds like there's a phasing effect on the guitar videos' audio? sounds like it's phasing in and out of diff frequencies. i wonder, maybe this built in mic just can't handle loud volumes..but at the same time, that amp wasn't THAT loud :\
Your phone isn't meant to replace a high end video camera, lol. I have a ContourGPS race camera that I used all the time. The 720p was capable of 60fps and a wider angle than 1080p so I almost never used 1080p.
I forgot I had the mic sensors turned down, so if you actually want to watch the video put the volume up lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM2iPxNem0k
damn i think they came out pretty good. I havent check out the video cam yet...sweet dog too....I rescued a Lab/Rhodesian RidgeBack last year...
And don't even try recording on a high volume environment like a club. Sound really bad. Distorted. NOKIA n9 and iPhone 4 even wp7 sound from videos way way better quality. Every htc phone I owned sound from videos its been crap
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
yeah, it's because the mic's are too sensitive and they record at suhc a low bitrate. my amp wasn't that loud, and there's serious frequency issues, it's like constantly readjusting to the frequency, even though my guitar tone/freq isn't changing.
etiher way i don't expect it to replace high end, but i do expect it to replace low end. my kodak is a cheap 40 dollar 720p crappy little camera, which records much better audio, but ****ty video...if you watch a few of my videos on there, i've done them with that camera, and you can hear how the audio is exponentially better, even though it's still crap.
in a phone where AUDIO IS THE SELLING POINT, why teh F would HTC screw this up so damn bad for the video camera? that's what pisses me off.

Yep, 04 Cobra, just traded it 3 weeks ago, I blew out all my control arm bushings that day, it was too hot to race on the setup I had. That was my 3rd heat, which is why you see me lose the rear end on the 2nd lap around turn 11.
But, even the mics on that camera suck ass. They positioned them on the front of the body, so exterior videos sound like **** without the sensor turned way down. I wouldn't expect a phone to be any better than a camera that is made specifically for high wind high volume sports.

Only thing I can think is what you should already know being a musician! Fabricate some sort of insulating piece that can cover the mic. I just realized this phone doesn't have noise cancelling mics. The X2 had 3 mics.
wait, it doesn't? i thought it had 2 mics too?

poor video recorded sound quality

Just wondering what you guys think of it? I go to a lot of concerts and music festivals and the video quality on the note is superb. However, the sound from the video is horrible. The one thing that me and my friends all agree upon is the video sound recording on the iphone is better than any phone out there. The note simply cannot handle loud sounds, particularly really loud bass. The sound on the whole video is just off and it sounds like the microphone is in direct wind. Dont get me wrong, I love the note and I am an android fanboy, however I think this is an area which the iphone dominates. What do you guys think about the sound recording quality? Is there anyway to fix this through software? hardware?
never found a problem with audio from video recordings. few weeks ago i was filming a drift event at a local track and sound came out fine with all the loud noises going on.
Speaking of, do you guys have any YouTube links of vids with your note?
I just can't seem to live with out a removable storage, and I have been leaning in the notes direction.
I am just worried about video, and pic quality with the note...I had a 4g galaxy s and the pics were awful.
Sorry if I am hijacking.

the playback of audio recorded with a video is going to bad if you are recording anything with a lot of bass or any high dB sounds that are above the microphones ability to capture. These phones use a microphone thats really just a small speaker, when loud sounds are being emitted and your trying to capture them they can ofter "bottom out" the microphone so that all you hear is loud static distortion or if the bass is really heavy, nothing at all.

I think the video quality is awesome on this phone. I haven't watched them on any external devices though, my opinion is purely off of viewing the videos off the phone.
As far as the drift meet you went to, I'm pretty sure the note can handle the sounds of screeching tires, I am mainly talking about BASS. I understand that almost all devices have a certain limit until the microphone can no longer handle the strong bass. The sound gets distorted, and you can't hear anything else. All I am saying is that somehow the iphone is able to handle strong bass at a concert even when you are standing pretty close to the stage. Anyone else experience the distorted sound on their note?
I have personally experienced this and it must be due to the different build qualities of the microphone. Is it possible to attach an external microphone via the headphone jack and use that to record video sound rather than using the one built into the phone? that would make a huge difference IMO

http://youtu.be/N06GsbGyh28 shot this 2 weeks ago, first time messing with video on the phone, i was impressed by the clarity of both picture and sound, just need a dern zoom feature while filming
also not sure why your expecting amazing quality sound from recording a live performance, no matter what phone if ur close to the speakers your not going to get non distorted sound, ive owned every iphone and never heard clear quality sound after going back and watching vids i took at partys and such, i do belive i saw something on engadget the other day about a better quality mic u can plug into the headphones jack

I was just thinking about this before bed last night. I was looking at some recently shot kareoke videos from my note. The audio quality is absolutely horrendous. Like...disappointing bad.
My atrix was was leaps and bounds better. Was able to handle (and reproduce) bass just fine. Never distorted the audio like the note does. From concerts (rock mind you) to kareoke, anything...I guess its an unfortunate con ill have to live with.

I know exactly what you mean, in terms of capturing sound at, say...a concert. It is overpowered. I've heard that one way to tackle this problem is to put tape, or a finger, over the mic hole when recording.
Here's a vid I took when I saw The Black Keys a cpl months ago. I even wrote in the description that it's a shame the sound is crappy...

I am not expecting amazing sound quality, just good enough so that it doesnt sound like crap. Obviously microphones on phones have their limits, but as I have stated, and as others in this thread have stated, the note is pretty bad at recording sound. My girlfriend has an iphone and all of my friends have iphones, and trust me, the sound recording is much better on it. Still love my Note though, best phone ever!
I seen rammstein and just like the others said.. Very loud sounds makes the audio sound very muffled and hard to hear.. I wonder if I had the the recording volume set halfway. If it would of sounded better?

I can tell you this, its way better than HTCs Video playback. Their sound quality is low.

Sound quality was audible enough. So thats my pov on this subject. You should try it.

DNA vs GS3 camera comparison, sample pic

Seeing some posts about which has a better camera here is a picture at 100% crop, left is GS3 and right is DNA. What do you think?

The color of the sky shows the most distinction. Clear blue vs. greyish.
True but the building looks less washed out and richer on the DNA.

That is a great comparision. Thanks. Both look good. GS3 looks a tad better.

The GS3 definitely looks better. More accurate colors, better exposure, and higher detail on fine lines and text.
Some comparisons
Some people didn't like my review of the DNA saying that I was too harsh on the 1080p 440ppi display. How could it possibly be worse than the 720p S3 panel? Well, I think these will speak for themselves:
First a short video shot by an iPhone 4S...DNA vs S3 playing Underworld Awakening. It's a bit hard to show how much the S3 dominates because it's a video of video playback, but the most accurate part is when Selene and Michael are kissing. You can see the skin tone is MUCH better:
http://db.tt/Z597Hcuc
Then the friend with the iPhone 4S and I went out and took some shots. He's taller than me, so the angles are a bit off, but you get the idea. 4S is on the left, DNA on the right:

http://db.tt/G3pabYog
As you can clearly see, the DNA gets smoked when it comes to color and brightness. Either I have a bad panel or sensor or this camera/video playback is just simply inferior right out the box.

First images the big difference is white balance easy to fix. Both images need adjustment.
Second set of images yes the Iphone is brighter. But its to bright the highlights are all blown. From the view point of post processing the DNA image has better shadow detail and high lights are properly exposed. You can not fix what is not there. There for you can not restore the lost high light detail in the Iphone images. And again both images need white balance adjustments.
Oh and by the way pixel peeping cell phone images is stupid. They are just snapshots. 99 percent of them are going to end up at 72 DPI with heavy JPG compression for web posting anyway, Or worse yet slapped with canned Instagram filters.
Tbh both look **** but that is every Camera Phone out there until they make the Galaxy Camera into a Phone.
I wouldn't look at either of them on their own in a pic on facebook and call out the colours or picture quality......... it is what it is, a picture take from a phone.
People love to make a big deal about it, I'm not ever going to own a GS3 or a Droid DNA but tbh :\ Both look the same to me in terms of quality.

On the video the Droid DNA reflects so much light, though Samsung devices have always been on the lowest side of reflecting light, only just beaten now by the iPhone 5.
In pictures (I haven't read your post so I dunno which is which) the one on the right look a lot better.
FIXED!!!!
I saw a post about Camera 360 Ultimate after I posted my shots. This 3rd party app COMPLETELY fixed this issues. The default camera software absolutely blows. I purchased Camera ZOOM FX a long time ago and installed it. Again, the issues are all gone. Do NOT use the default camera.
I also resolved the video playback issue with the 3rd party app called MX player. Under settings, I checked all the boxes under hardware decoding, changed CPU core limit to 4, changed Color depth to 32-bit, and then after the movie started playing I turned the brightness all the way up. I'm not sure if all those steps are necessary, but it fixed ALL my complaints regarding video playback on the DNA.
I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo much happier with my phone choice now!!!!
the dna colors look more realistic in the photos. the iphone is way too bright and white. and i cant wait to try the dna! the rezound camera was the best out then and hope the dna to be the same!

HTC One Video Recording Test With a Jet Fly By

Just picked up this phone a week ago and I was very sceptical at first. Being a long time Samsung user and a fan of TW I'd thought I couldn't get used to the Sense..
But the phone is still in my hands. Not because of battery life, or screen. But because of the amazing sound out of those tiny speakers. Today I went to a local air show and thought I'd see how the mic's would enjoy some extreme loud scenarios.
As you will here, the One does exceptionally well. I've taken many cell phones to concert events and hockey games that just can't record properly when under anything loud.
This is also by far the loudest I have ever recorded a video before. The video does not do it justice. A F-18 flying that close, I can't describe it. You can feel it in your chest.
Anyways, enjoy!

Hi, I've got also a HTC One and I film often concerts, loud car actions (drift, drag), or air shows (real planes and also gas and jet model planes).
Only my biggest hand cam (Pana X900) can reproduce the sound like it, the others get overdriven.
My main problem is, the videos have a low compression (high bitrate, about 15,5 Mbps), which is not surely needed in each case, and eats the memory..
Do you have any idea or experience, how to lower the compression, wihout changing the HD-resolution?
Or which is the currently most useful video converter, my RiverPast Video Cleaner and BoilSoft converter are unable to make an easy batch conversion.
Thanks in advance!

Honestly, no. I am mainly a photographer, and had my DSLR at the show. I by chance tried a video on the HTC One when the jet made the closest pass. Unfortunately I didn't have the nice cam out to get some close ups.
If your asking how to lower the compression on the video recording for the HTC One itself, you would need a custom ROM and a developer out there. I've seen such things done on my old Note 2 but none for this phone.

Videos thread!

Post any videos you've made with the phone! i'm currently working on some..i tend to do guitar videos on my youtube.
sadly, i'm not a fan of the G2 video camera.. it seems like it doesn't look as HD as it should to me. i just did a guitar video in my room..yes it's dark out, but i had my ceiling light and another lamp on, but even then everything looked really soft and blurry and nothing focused well..on top of the fact that anything white is completely overblown so you have to drop the exposure down like crazy. all in all, i'd say the GS4 recorded better videos.
especially bc the G2 does that constant focusing crap that the rezound did..where it's like, pulsating for some reason. weird.
post your videos!
here's the videos i did..i'm not happy with them whatsoever. the audio is bad, the constant focusing is terrible.
used audio focus on this..absolutley no difference lol i focused it on the amp, but yeah, i don't see any difference.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVDibA2u-7M&feature=youtu.be
this one sounds worse with more garbling..also, i did this one at 60fps, but youtube won't show it obv
tip for 60fps: the FPS drops really low when in low light situations..so don't expect 60fps in low light! you have to be in ample lighting for it to work correctly!
