Video Quality Examples - HTC Rezound

meh, i'm not as impressed as i was days ago. i did some 720 and 1080 tests; 720 looks like kinda crappy on the pc and pixelates easily, and 1080 looks better...720 is nice because it's 60fps, though. (actually, this is what i was told..and 720 looks smoother....buuuuuut in windows, ti still says my 720 videos are 30fps?! wtf? any ideas anyone?)
recorded some guitar videos; the video looks good, but the audio is GOD AWFUL. it encodes at 128kbps; that's absolte ****. i set the videos to mono, so maybe that has something to do with it, but idk.
either way, there's random clicks and pops and the frequency of the audio continuously changes, making it sounds like complete ass and there being no consistant guitar tone in it.
then again, this is just a phone that can also make videos, so who am i to complain? lol

honestly, the quality of the audio is really starting to piss me off. 128kbps is NOT ENOUGH for a camera to encode audio, damnit! time to continue with my open ticket to HTC about their ****ty audio.
overall, the audio is INCREDIBLY disappointing. why do they make high quality video, with such ****ty audio? i guess they figure the public doesn't know the difference between 128kbps and 320, which is kind of lame. oh well. guess i'll continue to use my crappy $40 kodak waterproof 720p camera for guitar vids lol
i propose that somehow, app devs or regular devs, we should all look into making the audio record at a higher quality. for example, built in voice memo records at like 96kbps..which is awful. tape recorder, a free app, can record up to 320mbps, which is MUCH better. there's gotta be a way to change that in the built in camera app, or maybe a new app that utilizies 1080p video and can record at a higher bitrate!

the problem with the pixelation is the intense hand movements with the guitar are too much for the phone not to mention the awesomeness of the sound being produced by the guitar is also too much for the phone to handle.
i have not checked out the other videos(just the guitar ones) so no comment on those.
ô_o

hahahahaha now THAT'S a response i can live with
when you watch the 720p outside dog videos, you'll notice some colors seem to "lump" together and pixelate.
did you hear how it sounds like there's a phasing effect on the guitar videos' audio? sounds like it's phasing in and out of diff frequencies. i wonder, maybe this built in mic just can't handle loud volumes..but at the same time, that amp wasn't THAT loud :\

Your phone isn't meant to replace a high end video camera, lol. I have a ContourGPS race camera that I used all the time. The 720p was capable of 60fps and a wider angle than 1080p so I almost never used 1080p.
I forgot I had the mic sensors turned down, so if you actually want to watch the video put the volume up lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM2iPxNem0k

damn i think they came out pretty good. I havent check out the video cam yet...sweet dog too....I rescued a Lab/Rhodesian RidgeBack last year...

And don't even try recording on a high volume environment like a club. Sound really bad. Distorted. NOKIA n9 and iPhone 4 even wp7 sound from videos way way better quality. Every htc phone I owned sound from videos its been crap
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

yeah, it's because the mic's are too sensitive and they record at suhc a low bitrate. my amp wasn't that loud, and there's serious frequency issues, it's like constantly readjusting to the frequency, even though my guitar tone/freq isn't changing.
etiher way i don't expect it to replace high end, but i do expect it to replace low end. my kodak is a cheap 40 dollar 720p crappy little camera, which records much better audio, but ****ty video...if you watch a few of my videos on there, i've done them with that camera, and you can hear how the audio is exponentially better, even though it's still crap.
in a phone where AUDIO IS THE SELLING POINT, why teh F would HTC screw this up so damn bad for the video camera? that's what pisses me off.

Yep, 04 Cobra, just traded it 3 weeks ago, I blew out all my control arm bushings that day, it was too hot to race on the setup I had. That was my 3rd heat, which is why you see me lose the rear end on the 2nd lap around turn 11.
But, even the mics on that camera suck ass. They positioned them on the front of the body, so exterior videos sound like **** without the sensor turned way down. I wouldn't expect a phone to be any better than a camera that is made specifically for high wind high volume sports.

Only thing I can think is what you should already know being a musician! Fabricate some sort of insulating piece that can cover the mic. I just realized this phone doesn't have noise cancelling mics. The X2 had 3 mics.

wait, it doesn't? i thought it had 2 mics too?

lol, was my first time ever on a road course and had no instructor to tell me what was up, I had only ever Auto-x and Drag raced prior... But I wasn't RPM matching, and that the issue initially, the bushings were all shot by that heat, there was no coming back for it. Double clutching is unnecessary.

added a couple more videos to OP; these ones are just video quality...turned sound off, and synced up with sound i recorded on my PC throuhg my usb guitar port. synced them together, so the audio/video sync isn't perfect

Dude, you are good as ****! lol I am JUST learning how to play. Bought my girl a guitar for Christmas too.

haha thanks man, i've been playing for like 11 years now lol..
what kinda gear do you have? what kind did ya get her?

know what else i noticed?
slow mo feature randomly just freezes up for a second and then starts again..i thought it was just how the video was on the phone, but nope, it's even on youtube...watch, you'll see what i mean. it's going along..just freezes for a sec or two..then starts again. ugh.

Just an Epiphone Special-II GT. I got her a Fender Acoustic, she is more serious about learning than I am lol.

[Q] Video Quality

Can someone tell me about HTC amaze video, i very impressed with amaze and probably getting one soon, but i found complain about amaze's speaker volume and their "sound effect".
I not expert myself about video stuff, can someone take a look and tell me what really going on with this 2 video i found online?
Thanks!

Those 2 sentences above is a link, have to add www" in front for it to work~
I cant add any link because i'm a new user, so this is the best i can do. Sorry for the trouble and thanks for looking~
I can't check the links since I"m at work but I have to say I'm relatively impressed with the video camera. I feel that it does over sharpen the images a bit, and that it doesn't handle back lights well.
I'll see if I can upload an MP4 straight from the phone somewhere so you can see it.
Thanks for the reply.
I not concern about the camera, i heard good review about their camera. What do you think about their sound quality during video playback?
I still cant post any link from youtube, can you do a search on youtube with "HTC Amaze 4G 1080p HD Video Sample"? The comments under the youtube clip is concerning to me. " the audio is atrocious , sounds like a 99c mic through a friggin tube telephone. " either he did a poor job on taking the video, or maybe amaze does have sensitive mic.
The device does pick up a lot of sound so in a noisy area like the youtube clip, it was pretty rough. My experience is similar, but not as bad as those videos.
Hey Spovik,
Can you try something out for me? I "think" one of the reason why amaze is able to pick up so many sound because of the extra mic, i know there is couple of them near the camera and bottom of the phone.
This is my idea: can you try video recording while covering some of the mic up, see if the sound quality improves or not?
Thanks!

If you go to settings in the camera, there should be a way to turn off stereo recording. I also feel like that's what's giving the video some crazy loud weird audio. Please if anyone could test this out and let me know how audio is in video mode. I would hate to have to buy a phone with a wonderful camera but bad audio. I will probably buy this phone once I can find out how the audio is and if it's good.
I'll check this tonight. I don't know if I can replicate 100%, but i"ll try and record either some football or a movie (something which will hopefully allow differentiationg of the stereo sound).
Here are recordings. I recorded the same clip from LotR (Dolby 5.1) I stood in the middle of the room and extracted the audio from the MP4.
It's hard to tell and sounds pretty crappy in both formats, but I think it's more of the environment and the volume I had the movie playing, but the mono seems to sound a little better than stereo without the wavering audio.
- Stereo
- Mono
need an equalizer app to process the videos and adjust according to user specs, and preview, (like audacity for amaze)

Prime really let me down recording video yesterday.

We had our first "real" snowfall on friday night, so saturday the family went out sledding in our neighborhood. I grabbed the prime as i walked out to record some video. I took about 8 videos ranging from 15-60 seconds, 1080p, no settings changed.
I tried to play them today, and discovered only 2 of 8 videos had any sound. The rest were silent. Video quality was great, but i'm extremely disappointed by the lack of sound.
It's not the playback. I've tried them on the prime, over hdmi, and after transferred to another computer. theres just no audio. I've tried recording a few more videos and have not yet been able to reproduce it. The ONLY thing i can think of is that it was about 25 F outside, but it seems as though the first and last videos i recorded have sound, so i'm not real inclined to blame the temperature.
If you haven't done much video recording with your prime, i urge you to do some tests and see what you find.

I've recorded a few videos with Prime. ON CHRISTMAS of my daughter opening up her presents n stuff and of family. I haven't noticed what you said yet. The video quality was great and was very surprised at how well it picks up sound. It does have a good quality Mic. I initially recorded at 1080P till I realized that would be a waste really if most of my playback is on the prime itself. PRIME can output 1080p to HDMI but plays 720p perfectly on display. You can play a 1080p video on prime with no problem but it won't be true 1080p playback. PLUS 1080P videos take up too much space when recording. 720p looks great n takes up alot less space.
AS far as the issue you had, might of been a glitch or hiccup at that moment. LIKE you said, you haven't been able to reproduce the event. Where the videos that had no sound any longer or shorter than others?
thanks for the response. Point taken on 1080p...i have plenty of space on the prime, and all the larger displays in the house are 1080p so i figured why not. I didn't notice any size anomalies with the vids that had no audio.
TF201 | XDA Premium
I can't believe anyone would use a 10" tablet for taking video. I just use my smartphone...
JUST KIDDING! Seriously, I haven't noticed that issue either, but I haven't taken much video with mine. Let's hope it was just a temporary glitch. Hopefully the video is enough to have captured the moment--those come and go way too quickly.
My kids and I have taken many videos with both the front and back cameras. My kids love the video effects that came with the firmware update. I've not experienced any audio problems.
Are you kidding me? I have taken a lot of video on it and for a tablet, it take AWESOME videos. It handle low light better than cheapo camcorder out there. No sound problems at all.
OP --
Be sure (especially when outside with gloves on) that you're not covering the mic while you're holding it. I did that a few times with leather gloves and it pretty much muted the whole video.
Simple user error on my part, no fault of the tablet.
^^^
Were you taking video in portrait mode? The only way you could cover the mic the way you describe is in portrait mode since the mic is on the top of the device near the cameras. Maybe a snowflake fell on the mic.

poor video recorded sound quality

Just wondering what you guys think of it? I go to a lot of concerts and music festivals and the video quality on the note is superb. However, the sound from the video is horrible. The one thing that me and my friends all agree upon is the video sound recording on the iphone is better than any phone out there. The note simply cannot handle loud sounds, particularly really loud bass. The sound on the whole video is just off and it sounds like the microphone is in direct wind. Dont get me wrong, I love the note and I am an android fanboy, however I think this is an area which the iphone dominates. What do you guys think about the sound recording quality? Is there anyway to fix this through software? hardware?
never found a problem with audio from video recordings. few weeks ago i was filming a drift event at a local track and sound came out fine with all the loud noises going on.
Speaking of, do you guys have any YouTube links of vids with your note?
I just can't seem to live with out a removable storage, and I have been leaning in the notes direction.
I am just worried about video, and pic quality with the note...I had a 4g galaxy s and the pics were awful.

the playback of audio recorded with a video is going to bad if you are recording anything with a lot of bass or any high dB sounds that are above the microphones ability to capture. These phones use a microphone thats really just a small speaker, when loud sounds are being emitted and your trying to capture them they can ofter "bottom out" the microphone so that all you hear is loud static distortion or if the bass is really heavy, nothing at all.

I think the video quality is awesome on this phone. I haven't watched them on any external devices though, my opinion is purely off of viewing the videos off the phone.
As far as the drift meet you went to, I'm pretty sure the note can handle the sounds of screeching tires, I am mainly talking about BASS. I understand that almost all devices have a certain limit until the microphone can no longer handle the strong bass. The sound gets distorted, and you can't hear anything else. All I am saying is that somehow the iphone is able to handle strong bass at a concert even when you are standing pretty close to the stage. Anyone else experience the distorted sound on their note?
I have personally experienced this and it must be due to the different build qualities of the microphone. Is it possible to attach an external microphone via the headphone jack and use that to record video sound rather than using the one built into the phone? that would make a huge difference IMO

also not sure why your expecting amazing quality sound from recording a live performance, no matter what phone if ur close to the speakers your not going to get non distorted sound, ive owned every iphone and never heard clear quality sound after going back and watching vids i took at partys and such, i do belive i saw something on engadget the other day about a better quality mic u can plug into the headphones jack

I was just thinking about this before bed last night. I was looking at some recently shot kareoke videos from my note. The audio quality is absolutely horrendous. Like...disappointing bad.
My atrix was was leaps and bounds better. Was able to handle (and reproduce) bass just fine. Never distorted the audio like the note does. From concerts (rock mind you) to kareoke, anything...I guess its an unfortunate con ill have to live with.

I know exactly what you mean, in terms of capturing sound at, say...a concert. It is overpowered. I've heard that one way to tackle this problem is to put tape, or a finger, over the mic hole when recording.
Here's a vid I took when I saw The Black Keys a cpl months ago. I even wrote in the description that it's a shame the sound is crappy...

I am not expecting amazing sound quality, just good enough so that it doesnt sound like crap. Obviously microphones on phones have their limits, but as I have stated, and as others in this thread have stated, the note is pretty bad at recording sound. My girlfriend has an iphone and all of my friends have iphones, and trust me, the sound recording is much better on it. Still love my Note though, best phone ever!
I seen rammstein and just like the others said.. Very loud sounds makes the audio sound very muffled and hard to hear.. I wonder if I had the the recording volume set halfway. If it would of sounded better?

Sound quality was audible enough. So thats my pov on this subject. You should try it.

Why is everyone ignoring the terrible audio capture?

Why do people keep on ignoring the terrible audio capture? Every video I have seen and heard from the GS3 has terrible audio. It is actually worse than the HTC X in many instances, and that phone has rather subpar audio capture as well. There are many many phones that capture much better audio, from the Xperia S, Motorola Razr, Nokia Lumia, iPhone, Rim Blackberry Bold, and even most of Samsung's own previous and lower tier phones and of course this phone's predecessor, the S2. About the only thing worse is probably most HTC phones, but not by much. Samsung's audio capture quality has dropped big time, into the gutter actually, and every review I've read has ignored this fact. There are occasional mentions of it by other posters, but ultimately the screaming fanboys usually overwhelm the conversation by saying how awesome everything is and to STFU GTFO about it.
I don't think there's anything wrong with my hearing. There's just something wrong with this phone. So why is this issue falling on deaf ears? Pun intended.
What do you mean exactly? Call quality, audio recordings, videos?

It's not something that I'm particularly bothered about because I don't think I've ever used my phone to video anything so a bit of a moot point for me I'm sure it probably is annoying if it is indeed as bad as you say

It sounds more like there is no filter on the microphone.
Honestly, I got my Galaxy III yesterday and due to bad audio in my recorded videos (I do record a lot) i'm seriously thinking to return it.
Compared to my current SE Xperia Pro which has a nice sound in all videos the quality of the sound in my videos made with S3 is really bad
Wait for Voodoo Sound!!!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I am very much bothered with that awful thin sound.
I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with Voodoo sound.
It has to do with some ****ty Band Pass Filter if you ask me.
It sound like there is no bass, middle, and no high.
Only some mid/high is left. can easily be checked actually.
if you want better audio on recordings, just use the included headset and plug it in before starting the recording.

Well has nothing to do with fan boys I guess. In my case for instance, I actually never use my phone to record audio/ video, so I really do not care about that feature at all. If I need to record video, or take superb pics, I use my Canon D600, and I do not mind the weight.
I do reckon that in the reviews there has been more emphasis on the image quality, rather then the audio quality... However that is something you'll have to confront the actual reviewers with rather then the users that do not use certain features that much or at all.

The issue is most prominent when recording someone speak, or some music being played, or some sounds which fill the entire audio spectrum not just some walking noises.
Listen to people speaking in videos, you will see (hear) the sound is awful.
Iv'e had an SGS, SGS2, Note and soon SGS3
I know how it should sound, and from many samples I know this sounds very bad.
The video is absolutely amazing, the audio, not so much.

Ahh so thats what this is all about, for me it seems like the noise cancelation could be reason if it, its too sensitive you can notice on the beginning of the video.. could supercurio voodoo tool be able to fix or improve this ?

I don't know if noise cancellation is active during video recording, but let me just remember you the size of the SGS III microphone, that is only a few milimeters (and the hole is less than a milimeter wide). Don't expect anything spectacular with such a small piece, it's far from being as large as this : http://www.guitariste.com/share/achat/marchands/woodbrass/neumann-u-87-i-116930.jpg
EQ'ing might help a bit, but remember this is a phone.

Oh well. I just made a vid with my note and spoke with my deepest bass voice into the mics, and indeed it is pretty thin here as well, but I don't remember having this problem with SGS2/1, I'll have one of them to try later today.
Not that this issue will prevent me from getting an S3 and enjoying every moment!

Actually - I just recorded myself with High Q MP3 Rec (Lite) and there is plenty of bass. So this problem should be resolvable by changing the way audio is recorded or captured. Here is me speaking into the mic : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15924481/recording-20120606-174117.mp3
In my opinion there is so much more bass there. The audio quality obtained when recording video has a great deal of margin to improve.
he meant the audios in videos that are record by sgs3.
as some have noticed it sounds muffled and thin.

The video is absolutely amazing, the audio, not so much.

the vids they are talking about is the one from gsmarena the on where they compare sgs3 and hox vids of cars on street.
and another vid it was an early hands-on it was also taken on the street where you see a man riding a bicycle then pans to the left to show the road under.
i'm sure some of you have already seen that vid.
the sound from those vids does sound muffled and thin.

yes that was what i thought ever since those gsmarena vids,
that the noise cancellation is set a bit aggressive when recording vids.
Noise cancellation should be disabled when recording video IMHO.
It is good when talking on the phone you want only your voice to go through and clear, but when recording audio as audio, i think there is no need.
Top mic should be left, bottom should be right, and thats it

HTC One Video Recording Test With a Jet Fly By

Just picked up this phone a week ago and I was very sceptical at first. Being a long time Samsung user and a fan of TW I'd thought I couldn't get used to the Sense..
But the phone is still in my hands. Not because of battery life, or screen. But because of the amazing sound out of those tiny speakers. Today I went to a local air show and thought I'd see how the mic's would enjoy some extreme loud scenarios.
As you will here, the One does exceptionally well. I've taken many cell phones to concert events and hockey games that just can't record properly when under anything loud.
This is also by far the loudest I have ever recorded a video before. The video does not do it justice. A F-18 flying that close, I can't describe it. You can feel it in your chest.
Anyways, enjoy!

Hi, I've got also a HTC One and I film often concerts, loud car actions (drift, drag), or air shows (real planes and also gas and jet model planes).
Only my biggest hand cam (Pana X900) can reproduce the sound like it, the others get overdriven.
My main problem is, the videos have a low compression (high bitrate, about 15,5 Mbps), which is not surely needed in each case, and eats the memory..
Do you have any idea or experience, how to lower the compression, wihout changing the HD-resolution?
Or which is the currently most useful video converter, my RiverPast Video Cleaner and BoilSoft converter are unable to make an easy batch conversion.
Thanks in advance!

Honestly, no. I am mainly a photographer, and had my DSLR at the show. I by chance tried a video on the HTC One when the jet made the closest pass. Unfortunately I didn't have the nice cam out to get some close ups.
If your asking how to lower the compression on the video recording for the HTC One itself, you would need a custom ROM and a developer out there. I've seen such things done on my old Note 2 but none for this phone.

Saw HTC in person at bestbuy. I have to say it is a beautiful phone.
