I got my sgs2 on 2.3.3 and upgraded to 2.3.4 using KIES. I then rooted it by flashing an insecure kernel following a guide on this forum. Each time I boot, I get the yellow triangle as well.
Kies says the latest firmware available for my phone is 2.3.4:
phone: XXKI1
pda: XWKI4
I want to move onto 2.3.5:
phone/pda: XXKI4
More than likely, I'll be following instructions on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
My questions are:
1. Do I need to change the modem version first or anything else before I flash or would a straight flash of newer firmware suffice?
2. I'm thinking that I lost the ability to reset the binary counter with a usb JIG because I updated using KIES. If I want the old bootloader, will I have to flash it separately or can I just flash the firmware as it already contains the old bootloader?
3. Would I have to root the phone again or would it be rooted if I flash the newer firmware?
4. Should I use the Frankenstein firmware if I want to stick to UK branding (english language etc)
5. Is there anything else I need to know?

Hello, sorry if my question had already been answered sometime, I'd be glad if you give me some advice.
I once tried to root my Samsung Galaxy S II using traditional method with odin, superoneclick and insecure kernel. It seemed to go well, but I didn't flashed stock kernel after (so when I reboot my phone, I see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, alongside with its name).
The problem is - I can't get an update through the Firmware update in phone settings, as it goes like this: I check for updates through phone settings, it says that an update for firmware is available, then it downloads the package, and goes into reboot, but when everything loads back, it says "Failed to update firmware", try again using PC software (Kies) or visit a Samsung service centre.
And when I try to connect to Kies, it either won't connect, or it would and say that an upgrade is available, I start doing backup and then "data backup cannot proceed because of an unexpected error"
Anyway, I'm ready to flash original firmware, I'm not really sure why I even rooted the phone in the first place. But maybe it's possible to do something to get updates through the phone without unrooting it?
I'm located in Russia, and the info via *#1234# is:
PDA: I9100XEKE2
PHONE: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXEKE1
Build info: Fri May 6 07:45:29 KST 2011
Kies says this:
Current firmware version: PDA:KE2 / PHONE:KDJ / CSC:KE1 (SER)
Latest firmware version: PDA:KI4 / PHONE: KI1 / CSC:KI1 (SER)
Any thoughts?
Heh, what are you doing here? You'd better visit this forum. In the header you can find in "Instructions" section the "Instruction for new user surviving". In russian Then read the thread and FAQ. Good luck. It's very easy to solve your "problem".
Or you can read first 3 posts of Intratech's thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Very useful IMO.

My Samsung galaxy S II is rooted and I would like to have new update. In this case what I have to do? Do I have to flash the original XWKE2 Stock Kernel again via ODIN or have to do something else?
Thank you in advance for your help!
yes, you would have to flash the original kernal for kies to work.
If you wan to update, why don't you use Odin and get the latest stock foirmware from Intratech firmware thread?

I've tried with Odin to flash the original kernal in my case XWKE2 but nothing happened. I lost the Download access. The superuser permission is still there and when I try to connect Kies it didn't work. Then I decided to wipe to data and to have factory settings BUT again superuser is there and no access to Kies...
Which of Intratech firmware will be suitable for my phone?
I would like to update my phone that's it. Any help, please.
How about mine.. i9100g how to unroot?
PDA : I9100GGDZKJ2
PHONE : I9100GDZKJ1
CSC : I9100GOLCKJ2
Any suggestion..

Finally I HAVE UNROOT device))
What I have done so far. First I flash the original firmware which you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278 . If you NOT sure which one to use check the Build number and try the same firmware. My build number was finishing KE2 so I used XWKE2 even if the rooted firmware was XWKDD !!!!
Then the Superuser icon was still there. I have decided to wipe all my data and to try again to update. Eventually I succeed to update the phone. Even after wiping the data Superuser icon was still there. SO I connected my Galaxy S II to Kies and clicked on the firmware updates and did happened to work ;-)
So now I have Android Version 2.3.5. and NO root access.
Nice;-)
Hello everyone!
I have a rooted galaxy s2 (I see the superuser app on my phone) running android 2.3.4. This is a Bell phone. What I would like to do is unroot the phone, then update it to 2.3.6 or wtv update is available through kies (normal update) and then root it again and unlock it using Galaxy_S unlock so I can use it with Fido.
I have a few questions:
Is it even possible to do this?
Can anyone tell me if this is a good method? how to do it properly? or any better alternative methods?
also, if I use this unlock, is it permanent? or do I have to re-unlock the phone every time I loose root/update firmware
ANY help is appreciated, i'm trying to put all of this together and it's not very easy. I bought the phone rooted...but it's not unlocked (as it doesn't work with fido), needeless to say I have no clue how it was rooted and what was used (or if it even matters).
EXTRA infro: (when I press *#1234#, I get:
PDA: I9100XXKG6
Phone:...XXKG2
CSC:...OXAKG
Tell me 2 things, why do you need 2.3.6 and do you have an app called CWM on your phone? The icon looks like a gear
1. first unlock your phone, it is permanent you do not need to unlock if you flash again.
2. you may not be able to use kies to update as the kernal which kies uses to update was changed when it was rooted.
Do you perfer stock or custom firmware ?
you can get the latest stock firmware and installation guide from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
if you want custom search in Android development forum.
3. you will lose your rooting when you update firmware. All you need to do is reroot your phone it is easy. follow instructions in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399.
My SGS2 version is:
PDA: I9100XWKI4
PHONE: I9100XXKI1
CSC: I9100OXXKI2
My phone is currently rooted with CF-root. I'm selling the phone and getting a SGS3, so now I want to unroot the phone. I don't want to upgrade to a newer version of Android, just unroot and after that reset binary counter with an USB jig.
What should I do? Can I just flash the phone with XWKI4 stock kernel found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Will flashing with stock kernel remove root and programs that came with CF-root or do I have to flash the full XWKI4 firmware package? Phone was updated to XWKI4 using Kies, so I guess I have to also replace the bootloader with old version? After that I can use the USB jig and reset binary counter?
Yep. You can flash the stock kernel, but given you're selling it I'd do the following:-
*Go into CWRecovery and format cache, data, system, & internal sd card.
*Flash stock rom in Odin
*Factory reset just for good measure
Done.
And yes, if you find the jig doesn't work initially, flash the old bootloader then jig it to reset the flash counter. Having said that, if the jig does work in the first instance, don't flash a bootloader just because it sounds reasonable to do so. The less messing around with bootloaders the better; you only play with them if you have a specific reason for doing so.
Thanks! I'll give it a try. I want to be very careful, not a good time to brick the phone, the buyer wouldn't be happy...
No probs ;-)
If you follow those steps the phone will be as close to the day you bought it as you can get it, obviously minus wear & tear.

[SOLVED]
Went through these steps and now the phone is unrooted and with newest offcial version of ICS, and binary counter is reset.
Now the buyer wants the phone with ICS and I haven't gotten an usb jig, either.
So, would the simplest plan be now:
1) Go into CWRecovery and format cache, data, system, & internal sd card.
2) Flash newest official version of ICS, using ODIN (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487). That would be XWLPG (I have the Nordic version of SGS2).
3) Root the phone with CF-root LPG
4) Use Chainfire's triangle away app
5) Again flash newest official version of ICS, using ODIN.
6) Factory reset
Would this remove root and reset binary counter? Will flashing newest official version of ICS after using the triangle away app change the counter value again?
Hi,
I have an unrooted GS II (I9100):
PDA: KJ2
Phone: KI4
CSC: KF2 (XSG)
I tried to upgrade it to ICS via OTA but the installation fails at 11% with the phone rebooting normally and displaying the "firmware update failure" message. I also tried to do it via Kies on my desktop but it gives me a "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies".
Is there a workaround to this? I really want to get ICS without flashing with odin.
Thanks!
Anyone? Please I really need help!

If you have an officially released firmware (all parts: kernel, PDA, CSC, Modem, etc.) for you phone and your region, KIES and OTA updater should recognize your system and provide the update to the latest release.
The fact that it does not work implicates that there was something changed on your phone - maybe a changed Modem or CSC file?!
You can use Check Fus Downloader from here => http://fus.nanzen.se/ to check the latest officially released firmware for your phone in your region and download it directly from Samsung severs.
It's a Windows application. After installation, you must select the OS (Android), the phone (GT-I9100) and then your region.
Click "Check" and then "Download".
If you extract the downloaded zip file, you get a ROM tar file.
This can be flashed to your phone with Odin.
Have a look here for a short description of how to flash firmwares with Odin => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Once flashed with Odin, you don't need KIES or OTA Updater any more ... it's so easy.
And you don't need to root your phone.
Give it a try !

I'm thinking a non-stock ROM (official ROM) was installed in my phone by the retailer since the phone is from the UK and the ROM added is for the Middle East region to add Arabic support, could this be why?
Also, flashing with odin, will it give me a the yellow caution triangle and will it void my warranty?
Thank!

Yellow caution triangle is only shown when flashing a kernel that was not signed by Samsung while the phone is in download mode. This is most commonly done with Odin, but there are other programs that can be used as well, like Heimdall.
Flashing a completely stock firmware (which has a stock kernel signed by Samsung included) will NOT cause the triangle to appear.
How about the warranty, is it void if I use odin to flash the ROM?

If the warranty is still currently valid, and if the ROM you are flashing is an official package from Samsung that contains a kernel signed by Samsung, then no.
Hello,
I recently returned my GS3 because of an audio problem.
My GS3 was rooted, so before to returned it, I used Triangle Away to reset the flash counter then I flashed an official firmware with Kies. The status of the GS3 was "normal" (in french but I suppose it's the same in english) and my counter showed a "Samsung Official"
The problem is that Samsung refuses to repair my mobile and claims my warranty is voided because my device was rooted and asks me to pay for the repair.
So I have two questions :
Firstly : How can Samsung know my device was rooted after a reset of the flash counter, a flash with an official firmware and an hard reset ?
Secondly : Is There anyone else who had the same problem with Samsung ?
img4.hostingpics.net/pics/71048111337050.jpg
Thank you (Im french so sorry for my English)

At first the phone was the official rom (Samsung 4.0.3) then I put Cyanogen Mod 10 (root), then I went back to the official rom via kies (I put away Triangle) and I again flash for a rom clean. Then I did a hard reset.
I never flash the modem
I send my phone with the official Rom (4.0.4) downloaded with Kies

Was it the right version... ex, was it originally on a carrier branded firmware, but you flashed an unbranded version?
Did you flash another region's firmware, ex Polish firmware will have a different CSC to an English one, and can show it has been rooted.
Are you sure there were no root apps, or CWM recovery zips on your internal sd?
All of these can show the system has been rooted before, and are grounds for voiding warrenty (examples can be triangle away apk, CFroot, rom .zips etc.
I have never had my internal sd wiped when I wipe data/factory reset, so this could be plausible.
