DPI question - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the point of these roms having different dpi's? I can't see any difference

Do you mean the density ?
if you mean that : then you screen will be small

If you didn't see a difference, then the setting didn't take effect. In most roms with dpi changes you should have smaller items, similar to changing the resolution to a bigger one.

LCD Density

I've been changing the LCD Density of my phone but I can't quite figure out which is the best, im just trying to combat the evil pentile screen, any suggestions?

I run mine at 200 with android overclock and using adw launcher i have edited the grid to get more apps on each screen...

So dropping the density works better for you? Thinks look less pixelated when I raise the density, maybe it's just me
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Raising the density is lowering the resolution. Lowering the density is raising the resolution. By dropping to 200 I have basically upped my resolution, so to speak, and my app icons are smaller... I then had to be able to edit the default grid for my apps and widgets to be able to effectively use the increased screen real estate... I am therefore able to have 8 apps across my screens and another 8 down, if I so wished. I do not have 8 down because with ADW Launcher I get home screen rotation back so there is only so much I can put on the screen in portrait that will actually fit in landscape... Check out the screenshots below bro...
I Got My Density At 215, I Tried 200 And It's Just Too Small For Me Cuz When I Try Tapping On A Link Or Anything For That Matter I Had To Be Dead On. It's All A Matter Of Preference To What Ya Like.
I noticed lowering the density screws up navigation. It doesn't follow you on satellite view. Slight deal killer for me.

Really... I haven't noticed that, but then again I haven't had to use the nav in the last few weeks... But I have used the nave with the LCD density change.... I was using LCD density app and not android overclock tho... Maybe that's the difference???

Yeah man, I tried changing the views, and it still wouldn't follow. It just stayed on the same spot. When I switched the density back, all was good...
It sucks too, because my screen looked way sharper IMO. However, I use navigation too much to not have it work as I like...

How did you edit the default grid?

With ADW Launcher pro... Look for it in the market... It lets you edit how many columns and rows of apps you have on the launcher and in your app drawer!! I couldn't deal with blur so this has helped me get over not having CM....

LCD Density

What LCD density are you using for your Razr? I'm on 220 atm. Default is 240.
Lower density better quality?
Makes the items look smaller so they look more defined somewhat. May throw some apps off. Can change this in your build.prop file but you need root.

Change LCD density of 4.0.3 stock rom?

I can change density in any of the CM based roms but not in any of the Sammy roms, it won't boot up at all and I need to restore from back up. Has it been done? 240dpi is such a waste of screen space!

Yeah I'd like to know this too

@ op
open the build.prop file in system\build.prop and do the changes as said by jje.
do note the stock dialer in sammy ics will look messy if you reduce the dpi. but you can live with it as 240 dpi is a waste of space.
bala is right guy to ans this haha he plays with density alot....well jje an bala both right....
An easier way is to use LCD Density app from the market which will change dpi for you. Have used this many times will no problems. Hope that helps someone

What are the benefits of changing LCD density?
I mean, the phone has a standard density because it might be the best one, right?

hallo,
use romtoolbox
when you open, give superuser permission
then go to the tabon the top of the screen called: performance, select build prop editor
you get a screen with a little pencil in the upper right corner, select that
your now in the buildprop. in contents you can scroll down to a line with the LCD density is 240. select that line and change the number.than save
Caution: not lower density as 160 and dont touch anything else in the contents

[Q] DPI and battery life

Hi
I've seen a few threads regarding dpi. But aside from aesthetics in the way of smaller icons and what not does lower the dpi have any effect on battery life?
And is there any way to change the ppi on the display like we can do on computers with resolutions? I'd like to have 320 ppi because anything beyond that I won't even be able to tell the difference.
It doesn't affect battery life at all. It just changes the sizes of things.
And no, you can't change the ppi, it is a fact of the hardware. And 'changing' the resolution on a computer is like changing the dpi on the phone.

Lower resolution = larger icons. Just clarifying.

If you lower the dpi the icons get smaller.

What he is saying is that if you lower the resolution (like on a pc for example from 1920x1080 to 1440x900 it will cause the desktop to stretch therefor causing this images to get bigger)
A lower DPI is like increasing the resolution, all of the icons and layouts will get smaller, fitting more on a screen, but doing so will not enable you to fit more icons on the home-screen unless you use a custom launcher where you can change the grid size.

Problem with LCD Density

Hey guys, so I have Viper Rom and I used the LCD Density settings to change to 320 DPI. I like how it looks a lot better, except for a few things. The lock screen is off centered. This is tolerable, but if it can be fixed I'd like to fix it. Also, I was able to resize all my icons except for the dock icons, that look cropped by default, the cropped version just gets bigger. I would like it to look like the original icons. Of course a fix would be to go back to 480 DPI, but I like how it looks and would like to keep it if I can fix these minor problems. Thanks guys!

Nova launcher lets you change dock icon size.
Also 320 is A bit too much imho. Try using 400 and flash multi dpi play store

Apex allows you to resize too, just the icons look zoomed in. And I'll try lowering it. Anything about the lockscreen too? That is the only other problem I have with it. Thanks
