You can install it like other APKs. But FWIW, it will install over the old version and leave behind the old data, doubling the amount of space that the app uses. If you want to avoid that, you can use one of the alternate installation methods described here. I personally use Root Explorer to install new versions of Market, overwriting the older Vending.apk.

It's because you didn't change the permission to make it executable...

[Q] How do you install the OLDER android market

It's funny because I installed it once but yesterday I installed the alien Rom because I couldn't install the Camera.apk file so I just started from scratch installing a Rom with the camera.apk already install........so I went to the market and see it's the new one, I hate it.......so I went to applications and deleted market/ the update market file too........then place older version of android market in system/app (r/w) using supermanager and also selected the permission button. Then clicked install. "application not installed"!!!!!! Really so then I was without a Market app so I had to reinstall the Alien Rom. Things are so complicated with this device the Evo you could just replace the apk you're good to go. Deoxed
update: I got it. talk about head------ache. all I did was deleted the market app and replace with the "right" old market.apk file. then i had to delete the updater market.apk file because it kept updating the market app. so I did that and got a error type message which closed the market app down. so Then i went installed the update market.apk file again which didn't install so I said screw this deleted the update market.apk file went back to market app and it works now.... so I dunno
update2: I knew it was too good to be true. Yeah the market.apk installed right but it doesn't download apps. I also tried different market.apk version, then it force close again. Screw this i'm just going to find another Rom that hopefully let's you simply install a APK file. after googling, all this stuff about use ADB/android SDK to install a simple apk app this isn't for me. *sad face So yeah I'll just settle with the new android market forget customizing my phone yep.......

just "push" it to system/app? I heard that term before but not really sure what you mean unless just drop the market.apk file off in system/app without installing it. Well right now I have the new android market installed with the update.apk file.
Push/Copy. Same thing really, you should just be able to delete out the app and copy the old market into /system/app. Might not hurt to delete the market in the davlik cache as well.

10 posts? umm yea lol. well what I did was went to supermanager(explorer) then went to the old market.apk that's on my sd card click installed ----> "application not installed" maybe I have to install directely on the phone? Ok let's try that--------> "application not install" like does the photon require a "special" type of apk app that only works on the Photon. gosh. Like does your rom have to be doexed or something?
I'm running Alien1 rom......but can someone help because now I'm without android mark
update: wait I think I'm getting somewhere. I deleted the market.apk app then paste the "older" version. then hit run and boom the newer version installed. hmmmmm must not have the right "old" version.
Not exactly sure what my post count has to do with anything. However I'm glad you figured it out. Just an FYI though, when you update an app that comes preloaded on a rom it won't replace that app instead it'll append a "1" onto the new filename and use that instead hence why you needed to delete the updated file before it would recognize the old market that you pushed into the /system/app folder.

10 posts or not, he seems to know more than you about this, and he is right. You take the apk file and move it to system/app in your phone memory. You can do this with adb push, or use root explorer to put it there. Don't assume that because someone has a low post count they don't know what they are talking about.
You can also uninstall updates from the application manager. It'll re-update to the latest release, though.

I already knew this. That's why i went ahead and replace the files. My problem was why isn't the app working correctly. That seems to be a buggy phone issue because the apk file is in system/app
you can always uninstall the market update then use titanium backup to freeze market updater. When I did it on my Photon I installed the older version of Market (2.2something...) and then used terminal to run about 3 commands that disabled market updater. cant for the life of me find the instructions I followed, but then perhaps my post count isnt high enough for the OP either. Because you know in order to know ANYTHING you have to have a high post count.

Whether or not you're rooted, you can grab the new updated Market .apk file from anybody who has posted.
Simple command through adb: adb install -r c:\downloads\Market.apk .
This should move the apk file into /data/app, which should not require root access and will load the updated version of the Market.
This method is used for most of Google products which come on the device in /system/app, but later an updated apk is released. The internal android package manager knows to grab the most recent version and to check both /data/app and /system/app in order to determine the most recent version.
Hope that helps!
My girlfriend's Evo 3D is in the same boat, still on the old market, so she doesn't have access to the books, music, or movies. She's a bit leary of me downloading an app from a forum (I know, really no harm), is there a way to force the update from within the market itself? If not, any reliable download links?
Edit: Actually, I'm curious. Does anyone that just has a stock Evo3D have the new market? Seems all the talk on the forums (after doing several searches) is about downloading the new market apk, not getting pushed an update.

I just bumped the new market for you. It's in the theme and apps section here on this forum. Check it out. Nd you don't have to be rooted just uninstall old market and install this one.
Or if your rooted and you are not near a computer just just root explorer ( or whatever else you use to access the root of your phone) and go to system/apps and search for vending apk delete that one and replace it with the one you just downloaded. Set permissions to
XX
X
X
Then you shld be good to go. If the new market doesn't show up just reboot your phone

To clarify, as I posted above, you don't have to remove the old market. System partition is locked for non root users. Only have to load the new market apk file into the /data/app directory.
The package manager is intelligent enough to check version numbers on both .apk files and determine which one is the newest version.
Also, as quoted in my previous post above, this is the same approach taken by any application shipped stock on a system that is later updated. The updated apk file is placed in /data/app and the original stock apk is left in /system/app as the /system partition is considered read only and should not be modified, by Android operating standards.

I'm on stock rooted ROM and the market update has not been pushed to me.
On my NS4G, the market update came along with Google Wallet and the Android 2.3.7 OTA.
Hope that extra information helps eliminate an extra step for those leary of modifying their system partition and provides more information to the internal workings of Android!
No duhh so you don't have to delete it. All this time

missing market apps on nook tablet

I rooted my nook tablet with the SnowballMod root and everything is working fine, but some of the apps in the android market are missing. I have tried editing the build.prop file and clearing the market data and cache to spoof the market, but it still wont work. does anybody have ANY ideas?
theres not some, more like a lot and thats normal cuz its happening to everyone. apps that dont appear on the market have to be downloaded as .apk files and then transferred to your nooks sd card i use drop box and es file explorer for this procedure
how would i do this? how close are the people to fixing this and being able to install custom roms? i need facebook.
sideloading if it is not working from market.

It's not technically broken. The market should not show you apps for which your device does not meet the requirements. That doesn't meet they don't work, but that you have to install them another way. After updating my phone to ICS, I had to sideload Tapatalk, since it is not "technically" compatible with ICS, even though it does work.

Factory Reset Doesnt restore apps

Have a problem with my TFP, downloaded and updated to JB using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1909819
Tried getting rid of some bloatware however i obviously deleted something important as now on play store i constantly get Server error on open. Have tried the usual fix's on here of uninstalling clearing data re installing etc all to know avail.
So i tried doing a factory reset however it did not install anything i had removed, I then tried downgrading which didn't work either, so in short have i lost google play forever, does anyone have a base JB i can use to re install everything.
Please help been tinkering for hours now to no avail.
Interestingly cant use GMAIL app either.

You don't say if you are unlocked and have a recovery?
Doing a factory reset will not bring back deleted apps as it only wipes the cache etc.
Re installing should have brought them apps back but I don't know how you are tying to re install.. Can you give a little bit more information on what I have asked please.

You will not be able to just install it. You will have to copy it into system/app folder using a file manager that has root support like es file explorer or root explorer.
Here is the file from the new JB update.

GO to settings-apps and go to "all"
Scroll down to Google play services and google play store and force stop both and clear data and cache for both.

Any reason why you can't unlock the device and install a recovery so you can install custom roms? or are you trying to keep your warranty intact ?
I'm also not sure why you can't just do part 3 of the instructions you followed in the original post to put jellybean back on again. ( then again you have edited so many files this might not be advisable.)

[Q] Help with Renaming an APK

Hi,
I want to install an a New keyboard for my Cellphone, but the problem is that the name of the Keyboard is "Android Keyboard" and when i try to install the APK it says "An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed"....
Now I downloaded VirtualStudio Ten and decompiled, changed the name of the Keyboard in (Strings.xml) and recompiled it, after that signed and zipaligned it(which the Virtual Studio Program did itself while recompiling the Apk) , but even then i am getting the same error? i can see that the program is now shown with a different name which i edited myself in strings.xml, but still no go,exactly same error! Am i doing something wrong here?
The error probably persist because the keyboard which you're trying to install already exists on your phone.
i tried to install something form xda because i wanted the latest version of the app. But i couldn't install it.. turns out that my installed version was the latest version so i basically was trying to replace the exact same app with this app.. and it didn't work.
Hope i made it alteast abit more clear fro you in this matter

Lol renaming an app in the strings.xml file won't effect the package name, if you know a little java, you will understand what a package means, just search on how to do it and be warned its not that easy as renaming the app name in the strings.xml file.
