Hey, just wondered if there was a way to unlock the mobile hotspot feature (without paying ATT obviously) without flashing a ROM. I have no problem with rooting, which I feel should allow override access for however ATT locks it. But, this was not the case with my old phone (Samsung Captivate). With that, I was only free to us the hotspot once flashing certain ROMs. Any advice? Thanks.
i'm pretty sure that is not possible without a custom rom
again .... you are in the wrong section with these questions. That is what the Q&A section is for.

kinda weird that you wouldn't mind rooting, but you would mind flashing a custom rom.
I know it's odd, but for now, lame though it may be, I kinda like the newest iteration of TW. Part of that is because there are some native apps (like quickoffice) that came with the phone that i use all the time and don't want to lose them with a custom ROM
@justlaxin13: It's possible and quite easy to do. All you have to do is root your phone by following jivy26 directions here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894
then get Titanium Backup (Paid version allows freezing of apps) open it, and uninstall Tethering Manager, reboot phone, and you should be good to go.
It worked for me, and I'm on Stock Rom, that's rooted, tooted, and free of all AT&T crapware!!! :-D

All of our custom ROMs right now except for Perception and CM7/MIUI are derived from I777 stock - so they'll have the same TW version.
And I think most of them (except maybe S8) still have Quickoffice. Worst case you can pull the APK from a ROM that has it.

thanks, I've been wondering much the same, whetehr flashing a custom rom would lose me access to Touchwiz and/or quickoffice. In particular I'm considering CyanogenMod and Unnamed, are both of these in the "include TW and QO" category?

Cyanogenmod is the exception - it's AOSP-based. CM7 and MIUI are the only ROMs that lose Touchwiz.
I think Unnamed has QO - if it doesn't, worst case pull the APK from stock and readd it to /system/app

Thanks, that worked for me. I'm rooted and still on the stock ROM. By the way, don't need the paid version of Titanium Backup, the free version worked just fine. I backed it up (just in case) and uninstalled it. Worked without a reboot even. Rebooted to be sure, and it still works. Thanks!
Just ran a speed test and was a bit surprised. '4g' in my area isn't the greatest, at least I thought.
But I ran a speedtest on my asus transformer while connected to my phone's hotspot.

Then immediately shut off the hotspot and ran it on my phone.
How can a device on the hotspot pull faster speeds than the device itself?
The asus is 100% stock, currently, and my sgh II is stock, at least for the next hour, with only entropy512's kernel, dd11032011, and unmodified apn settings.

Different TCP buffer settings (although on my kernel, yours should be nice and big), also, the speedtest app seems to randomly freak out and pick the wrong servers.
Gotcha. I'll try pinning it down but it's most likely nothing. I don't 'feel' the speed difference between this and other 4g phones.

Hi,
How can I permanently disable the Android market application from updating? I've used uninstaller to remove the update, but it seems Android thinks it has the authority to automatically update it self when it so pleases.
Is this not a violation of the TOS? How can I permanently prevent the Android Market application from installing updates?
The new version is a usability nightmare. Over half the screen is allocated to the stupid green top to which "google" will eventually be pushing their own advertised applications. Its absolutely brutal and unusable in its current form.
My phone is rooted if that makes a difference: IE change the permissions of the Android Market.apk so no one has the privilege to change write it.

Android apps don't update themselves unless you allow them by checking the "automatic update" box. Uncheck that and see what happen. I've never encounter an app updates itself without my permission, unless I misunderstand your question?
Try something like:
adb shell chmod 555 /system/app/Vending.apk
adb shell cp /system/app/vending.apk /data/app/
adb shell chmod 555 /data/app/Vending.apk

Yes, you misunderstood the question. The OP is talking about the actual Android Market itself. It automatically updates itself as soon as you launch the Market.
The funny thing is that the OP hasn't counted how many apps are shown in the old version vs the new version.

Take a look at where the scrollbars are. The new version is displaying less, from those screenshots.
Perfectly useable.
I just got the update, and yeah, this was really badly done.
Apparently loading the market now starts on your downloads list, which I find to be rather useless - I'm in the market to search or browse, and already have the main app list for this...
The curved upper part is pointless and just makes it feel more cramped, since it blocks most of whatever's at that part of the scrolling. It also keeps changing size, depending on what part of the Market you're in, rather disorienting.
The amount of lag is at the HOLY CRAP level, at least on the main screen that contains "Featured Apps". I had to put my phone down and wait just now because it completely stopped responding..
Now, let's go into "Apps"...
There are new subcategories, which is nice, but the Featured Apps are still there. Why? It's just a waste of space at this point.
Selecting an app, it's just a big mess. The curved upper part that has contained nothing but "Featured Apps" and the selector for Paid/Free/New now contains the image, name, and install/open/update/uninstall buttons, as well as the rating. I did ignore it for a short bit, expecting more ads, but then I realized - all the update/install/etc buttons in the entire market have been moved from the bottom of the screen to the top. And they're smaller, and their styles are different, so it's not immediately apparent.
Why is the Description automatically in "Less" mode? What happened to the nice tabs for Description, Comments, and Related that I had - now it's all smooshed back onto one page MySpace style..
I also see Allow Automatic Updates takes up... Wow, 3 lines, large gaps, and 1/3rd of my screen. Much more than it used to, for identical functionality. Again, why?
I think I'm going to redownload the AppBrain app for my searches. The "Update All" button is all I'll want from here.
I have no problems with the new market and it only loads the downloads page if that was the last page I was on and didnt close it completely and just put it in the background. IT may be device or Android version dependent as I have the update on a Captivate, Streak, and a LG ally and they all have almost no lag that I can notice.
Mine is working perfectly fine and only starts on the downloads page if I used the "home" button to exit the market rather than hitting back until it exited out. No lag and downloads seem to be faster as well. I am rooted and overclocked on a Droid X if that matters.
Have to agree with OP and Izkata, this is terrible from a usability standpoint; way too much scrolling and clicking to look at things like descriptions and comments on the details screen. Tabs just make more sense for that. Not to mention that when I'm browsing for apps, that curved upper section takes anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 of my screen. Major fail on this one.
The Android Market Automatically Updates ITSELF ...
The original question was how does one prevent ithe Market from updating itself.
There is a suggested solution for a rooted phone ... which someone has tried?
Is there a solution for a phone as yet unrooted?

I had trouble with the market update on my rooted Flipside so I uninstalled the updates and used Titanium Backup to freeze the Market Updater app. Did this a week ago and so far no adverse effects.
xxos, as far as I know there is no way to prevent the update on a non-rooted phone.
As soon as I get over a certain natural nervousness I will be rooting my little beauty.
I like the idea of going straight to 2.3 and I like the idea of starting from a Sense-less base.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the tip! Doing this you can keep the old Market, thus the Fast Web Installer from AppBrain still works
"pm disable com.android.vending.updater" should stop the market from auto-updating on you (You need to do this from a terminal session (or via adb shell) and you need to be rooted.
I used bloat freezer to freeze the market updater and it worked fine. Also requires root

Hello all!
I've been looking around in the ATT forums, and I've noticed that everyone is jumping ship from CM7 to UnNamed. Can someone be as thorough as possible in explaining why the change?
Currently on my phone, I am using CM7 and I have backed up the Samsung Stock Kernel/Rom (Entropy rooted), and the UnNamed Rom with Entropy Kernel. I switched to UnNamed last night just to try it out, and HOLLY BLOATWARE batman! I probably did the installation wrong but there was way more junk than when I first got the phone... which unfortunately I didn't back up.
TL;DR
Why the change from CM7 to UnNamed?
How you would *correctly* install UnNamed from another rom without the original Samsung backed up in CWM.
Why all the bloatware when I went from CM7 to Stock Entropy to UnNamed.
What bloatware are you seeing?

If you want to retain all the features of the camera and video part of the phone
it's best to stay away from CM7 until the DEVS decide to fix it.
I have been testing CM7 ever since I first purchased my Samsung Captivate and
now with my new SGS2 i777.
GTG's UnNamed v1.03 custom rom is the best currently available for our phones.
It achieves the full & steady 30fps according to the specifications of the phone.
The user interface cosmetically speaking is also the best there is right now.
CM7 is not ready for prime time yet especially if video recording and camera
user interface (UI) is important to you.
There are many missing features and options in the CM7's camera user interface.
CM7 still does NOT achieve the full continuous 30fps while recording video.
So home made recordings when played back will not be super smooth and will
not achieve the video standards according to the specification of the phone.
BUT it's up to you guys, if you hardly use the camera at all CM7 is great.
(personally I use my camera a lot and video recording is very important to me.)

You must have forgotten to use the "Wipe Cache/Factory Reset" before you
flashed the UnNamed 1.0.3 (FULL) rom in CWM recovery.
If you do a fresh, clean flash of v1.0.3 there should not be any AT&T bloatware.
(when I flashed my phone with v1.0.3 there was no bloatware.)
Media capture and playback is one area where Samsung excels, and since Samsung is both designing and engineering the hardware and software this is gives roms built on stock Samsung software have a big advantage over aosp type roms in this area of the phone. Also, Samsung is maintaining a proprietary grip on these parts of the phone.
The more and more proprietary you become the less aosp you become, and one of the main goals of the cm team is to stay close to an aosp type experience.
So for the cm team to try and maintain their aosp experience there is no easy fix for the camera. For them it is quite a challenge, and the fact that they have come as far as they have is somewhat remarkable. It is a significant software engineering task - that is almost all being done while blind folded and handcuffed.
That all being said, if you want to take full advantage of your camera and media playback stock based roms are the way you have to go. I like cm7 allot. But I too have switched to unnamed and my phones performance is great.

So, I found out UnNamed removes this:
Amazon Kindle, AT&T Code Scanner, AT&T Live TV, AT&T FamilyMap, AT&T Featured Apps, AT&T Hot Spots, AT&T Movies, AT&T Navigator, Books, Buddies Now, City ID, Days, Dual Clock, Facebook, Genie Widget, Kobo, Mini Diary, myAT&T, Press Reader, Protips, Qik Lite, Terminal Emulator, Words With Friends, Yahoo Finance, YPmobile, and Zinio
But even with all that remove, there is still bloatware. I mean I could remove them one at a time, but that would just take forever unless there's a better option.
CM7 had very little bloatware compared to UnNamed, I probably had to manually remove like 7 of them...
I guess I'll still play around with both of them, but so far CM7 as my vote. Just curious to why people were changing. If the answer was for the camera, then there is no reason for me to change.

If you want to uninstall even more bloatware you need to get the app called
"SystemAppRemover" from the market.
It makes it very easy to uninstall most any system apps.
The app has other functions too.
It's also best to flash a Nandroid backup of your rom before uninstalling
bloatware/system apps.
(use CWM Manager or CWM Recovery and NOT rom manager for backing up).
Good luck!

Excellent thank you for that.
Thanks all for the help, I think my questions have been answered.
This is the thing with custom ROMs. The dev puts in what THEY like and think is needed for a better experience. Some of it is intergral to the full functionality of the phone, some of it is just preference. This is how you get several different roms based on the same build. At the present time, there aren't a whole lot of options for customs roms. Hopefully that will change in the near future as more and more devs get their hands on this phone.

So I recently did an OTA update and didn't like the battery life it left me with. I then did the unroot thin with Odin and flash back to original stock everything. My question is this....what is the stock baseband version that comes with at&t sgs2? Right now I've got I777UCKK6 while running stock android 2.3.4
On a side note....is baseband version something to worry about? Also, is the new update to 2.3.6 doing the same battery drain to everyone?

There is a sticky thread at the top of the Development section with all the modems for our phone... you can experiment with them to see what works best for you.
If not rooted, you'll have to root again to flash. While your rooted, I'd suggest you create a backup in Cwm then try the SHOstock or UnNamed ROMs... both are bases on stock and both have fantastic battery life (much improved over stock). You'll get your current modem with both, but with either you can replace with what you want.
Okay. In the instructions it says there should be a yellow box that says 0:COM8 but mine says 0:COM4 does that matter?
Nevermind, I tried it once more and it's back to bone stock! Thank you so much for all the support!
AJ
FYI, there's nothing wrong with running KK6 baseband (modem) with KH7 firmware.
The modem and the rest of the firmware are fairly independent.
That's why modems are packaged separately from the rest of the return-to-stock package.
I never said thanks to you. I appreciate all your insight and hard work that you do.
May I ask...how does one know if they have the Android os bug?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
There is no actual Android OS "bug" - just bugs or misbehaving apps that drive AOS up by waking up the device multiple times.
If you have high drain and high AOS, you need to look through my diagnostic procedures in the Known Battery Drainers thread. If you go through them and have high wlan_rx or wlan_wake kernel wakelock counts, something wifi-related is making your device wake up. You need to run a packet capture (see battery drainers thread for info) to get more info.
Possibilities include but are not limited to:
The infamous BT-AMP bug - Packets with Ethernet protocol 0x886c once a second in the Shark for Root/Wireshark capture
Misbehaving router that spams ARP - lots of ARP packets in the capture, often once a second
Misbehaving app - network traffic arriving frequently at your device. Skype is bad news in this regard
Something on your network spamming broadcast traffic - Windows Client Backup, Dropbox LAN Sync, UPnP/DLNA SSDP traffic, etc.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
OK. I will check my apps. I'm a big newb to this stuff though. It wouldn't be my phone so I wouldn't need a new one right? Is my android os running at 12 to 18% all the time considered high? Thank you very much.

I don't have tunIn radio, wish that was all it was lol. I don't know if I should try to return the phone for another one or not. I have also noticed that my Gmail has been taking forever to send email from my phone....it never used to!
Here are the screen shots of my phone after I have gotten home from work. Moderate usage nothing major. Checking Gmail, Internet browsing for a few minutes, and a few phone calls.

I just wish my battery lasted me longer than what it does lol. This is a bummer!

Hi,
this probably was discussed already but can't seem to find anything using search.
My battery drops about 30% overnight with Wifi and Mobile data disabled, I'm coming from a HTC Desire which lost 2 or 3% under same conditions.
I noticed yesterday night that wifi-sharing took a lot of battery although I never used this and wifi was off.
I then rooted and installed titanium backup and I froze wifi-sharing and the samsung "hub" apps as this was mentionned on another forum as being a solution.
This morning however, no wifi sharing which is good, but I lost again 30%, this time just the "android system" took the most.
I'm out of ideas, this can't be normal right?
I am still running 2.3.3, there are no upgrades for my country currently
BB version I9100XXKE4
Kernel 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build gingerbread.xwke7
I think I might be ready to start flashing ROM's now
Anybody any tips? I like my device as is so want to keep it as stock as possible but with better battery life and if possible editable power controls in the notification bar (I want to add "mobile data" also to it)
Cheers

Since you are already rooted and want to stay as stock as possible then go to this thread here and follow the guide that Intratech gives and choose whichever firmware you want. they are all official releases and all stock as you like it.
Backup your rom though in recovery. Make sure you backup your apps with Titanium Backup and read the guides in that thread i gave you and you should be fine. Also install an application called BetterBatteryStats. That should help you find out what keeps your phone awake and what application causes it. That way you can either remove that application or just freeze it. Search for the app using google and you should have it in the first few results
Thank you for the info, I've installed betterbatterystats so before installing a new rom/firmware hopefully I'll figure out what's eating the battery
ps by saying "close to stock" I actually might have expressed myself incorrectly, I meant I didn't want major GUI changes like e.g. the MIUI roms... I've used go launcher on all my phones/roms anyway
If there are roms out there who can improve speed/functionality/customisation even more off course I'm very open to them
cheers
B
Normally i would say hyperdroid but that thread has been closed try checkrom or even in the android development there is loads of roms there to try out my friend.
Foxhound seems another good bet to though.

Start with the Better Battery Stats thread and particularly partial wakelocks .
DO not flash roms that's not the problem its stuff using the phone during sleep .
Upgrade once you have made some progress with the battery . stock roms from the link posted .

Enhanced email seems to be the issue, googled it and it seems that the calendar sync is the problem so switched this off
fingers crossed

that is alot..no wonder your battery gets ****ed so quickly make it so you get emails every four hours than having it on push....or delete that app and use samsung email client...basically like outlook it is...great app and does not drain battery
I have an imap account set to check every hour and an exchange account without polling (manual) so polling is not the issue
I use enhanced email because this bypasses the exchange security (pin code that pops up all the time)
I had this on my desire without issues so my guess is that it's the sync for the calendar... it was disabled on my desire but on my S2 for some reason it was enabled so switched it off and I hope this sorts the battery drain issue

I have a problem with my boyfriends Xperia S.
Starting today, it is impossible to enable GPS, trying to do so causes whatever app I try with to force close.
For example, if I try to enable it via Notification Bar Toggles, systemui.apk force closes. If I try to enable it via settings, settings.apk force closes and if I try via any third party app or widget, that app force closes as well.
GPS is the only thing that is not working correctly, everything else like WIFI or data etc. still works.
The phone currently runs Android 4.1 on a custom rom. I already tried to reflash the rom, it didn't help.
What else could I try and what could be causing this?
Thanks in advance!
Have you made any changes to the SystemUI? Battery mods? etc? On some other Xperia phones, it seemed that caused this issue. A quick search didn't bring up anything specific. After you reflashed the rom - did you do a clean flash and try it before reinstalling any backups or other settings? Another rom is an option, worst case scenario.

Thank you for your answer.
There hasn't been any change to the phone for almost a year now, and not even a new installed app for about a month.
I also searched but the only thing close was a thread about an xperia mini, but there reflashing seemed to have helped.
I wiped everything and tried on fresh install but it still force closes anything. Almost as if the apps just couldn't find the gps. Is there any apk that belongs to gps or something similar that could be missing? Maybe deleted? I took a quick look at system/app before reflashing the rom but the only thing gps related there was 'gpssatilitenotification.apk'. Tried wiping the data and cache of that but that did not change anything, still, a reflash should have solved that
Changing the rom would really have to be the last resort. But the phone ran on that rom for about 1 year and a half without any problem so I think the issue is not rom related, but of course i could be wrong.
That is very strange. You don't necessarily have to change roms permanently, but testing another one real quick will be an easy way to tell if the issue is hardware or software related. As you noted, the issue happens immediately, so won't take long to test.

Alright, I'll try to change the rom tomorrow and see if it changes anything. I'll report back, thanks for your help.
No problem. Good luck. Just remember to do a nandroid so you can just roll back if that one doesn't work either.

I reflashed the stock rom, and the same thing is happening.
If it's not rom related, it might be hardware.
Maybe the gps sensor is broken or anything?
Is that really how the system would react to a hardware damage? I searched but couldn't find anything on the topic.
I would have imagined if it was broken, it would just say 'turning on' with nothing actually happening, but the apps are force closing.
Myself, I would try one last thing: flash a CM based rom or something non stock. If it fails there too, then probably a lost cause. I do repairs for a living and have never seen that happen. Phones are crazy things...see something new every day. Any chance of liquid damage? Sweat? Drink? etc?

I can't flash CM because the bootloader is not unlockable.
Liquid damage is highly unlikely. Also no drops or anything, it's really weird.
I wish I knew how this happened, it was from one day to the next all of a sudden, but I can't really figure it out.
Anyway, thanks for your help. If I should find out anything else, I'll post it here.
Locked bootloader? Ugh. Hate when they do that. My last phone was a Sony phone. It was unlocked, but pretty much every other variant wasn't so the development was weak compared to other similar quality phones. But yea, unfortunately, stuff just goes bad. :/ I hope there's another solution, but not sure I would hold my breath as it's such a unique problem. I read the forums ALL the time as well as experimenting heavily with my phone and fixing, rooting, etc other people's stuff and haven't seen anything I can think of that would cause this. Not saying there isn't an answer, but if there is, I would imagine it's rather obscure.
Just for the heck of it, searched for: GPS apps crash system - and found other phones that have suffered from this, such as Blackberries:
https://supportforums.blackberry.co...s-with-any-application-using-gps/td-p/1454003
Just thought of another thing, maybe you can plug it into the computer and get a logcat running, then make the phone crash and the logcat should catch what fails before it crashes. Now the logcats are confusing to read if you aren't used to them (I'm learning slowly). You could also try to run it from the phone if you don't want to use the computer with something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jtb.alogrec as it saves it continuously to the phone's storage.

Hm I attached the screenshot of the logcat while the systemui force closes when using the notification toggle for gps. I really can't read any of that though

The log should be in a .txt format. You would want to upload that or to paste it @ pastebin.org and copy the link here.
