I just got my Evo 3d. I had a 4g and gave that to my wife when she lost her phone. I had the 4g rooted and was running Vaelpak and loved it. I would love to root the 3d if for nothing else but to tether. As I have been able to find, the only root method for the 3d with the 1.5 H-Boot, is using the HTC method which cannot be completely undone. that is it sets a flag so that if I were to have problems and send the phone in, they would know I rooted. I have not been able to find a root method that is completely reversible. Is that right? Is anyone working on a way to root that can be reversed completely?

on the bottom of the HTCDev method it tells you how to re-lock the bootloader.
just one command in fastboot...
However, they know you rooted the instant you sign up for htcdev... so, your mileage may vary..

is there a way to get the HTC tool without signing up? Or is someone working on a way that doesn't' require signing up with HTC? I don't want to loose the warranty if someone is working on a better way. But if the community is happy with the HTC way and not working on another, I may go ahead and do this. But the phone is less than a week old so I am not quite ready to loose the warranty.

also, importantly, the phrase "unlocked" will change to "relocked" on the device further providing a very easy indicator to any repair tech the device was unlocked at some point in time.

Haven't seen any public statements from AlphaRevX indicating they are working on or are planning on working on a method for hboot 1.5.
The previous methods they used were patched in software 2.08 and hboot 1.5 release.
I don't doubt their capable of achieving the same results with hboot 1.5 but I have a hard time seeing this as a high priority for them as the process is very complex and difficult. In addition, the manufacturer has released a method which is good, not great, but good and much better than the alternative previously available of nothing.

Thanks. I do want to root but not sure I want to loose warranty less than a month after buying. I do not overclock so I am not worried about that. I will probably root soon, but knowing that there is no way to go completely stock once I have done it, gives me pause.

If we go ahead and HTC Dev Unlock, and then the lte gets s=off, will we be able to either flash everything completely back to stock and get s=off, or will we be able to just achieve s=off using the the method and write over the htc dev unlock?
The question of whether we can undo HTCDev unlocking isn't really an issue, it will almost certainly be done and figured out by the time / if somebody figures out a true S-OFF method. The only real sticking point with HTCDev for most people is the fact that your phone's serial number gets recorded (and your bootloader says "relocked" if you do revert but that's something that will probably be fixed eventually).
But in the end, who knows what the future will bring? You can already RUU back to stock in every sense except the bootloader label.
My guess is somebody will get their hands on an engineering hboot sooner or later and this will all get sorted out.
My only worry is for Sprint's TEP, but I also did read somewhere that they are taking in rooted devices, so I'm guessing it shouldn't be an issue anyway?

Sprint couldnt care less if you rooted your device. As long as you take it back to stock before you bring it in they usually dont care at all...
Hey guys, just got my EVO today and I have a few questions.. to use this tool, must I use the root method in development which goes through HTCdev.com? If so, does this blacklist my phone at HTC automatically? If that is the case, whats the purpose of the tool? Also, if I do this and return my phone within 14 days will I be unable to return it because I went through the procedure?
I really want to try some custom ROMS, I love the phone stock but the inability for the browsers to keep pages loaded when you multitask is just killing me. This is my one and only complaint about this phone.

Voiding ur HTC warrenty doesnt affect your sprint warrenty. There's been people swapping in there phones fully rooted before with sprint

Make sure you read through the entire s-off thread. I am not going to risk soft bricking my phone until they release a fix for why some people are getting stuck at a black screen in download mode. I assume their original script will be updated to prevent that from occurring in the future.
Just make sure you read up on it and accept the risk it comes with. People install drivers by all sorts of different methods (HTC Sync, through device manager, through a stand alone installer...etc) and I am guessing the way some people installed drivers is why the issues are happening since a couple different drivers need to be installed depending on which mode your phone is in and I wouldn't be surprised if the correct drivers don;t get installed if you use certain methods but I'm probably wrong.
The only reason I want s-off is because we can get rid of that red text now on boot up but I don't want to deal with unbricking if I am one of the unlucky people.

where do i find the unlock? Sorry i am fairly new at this.
You'll probably get flamed for not searching, as this is a common question. But anyway, go to htcdev.com and on the right side where it says choose device, look for 'other devices' or so me things similar. Also read a lot about rooting, everything you need is in the dev section. If you get stuck let us know

This only voids your HTC warranty. When was the last time anyone has used that?
It does NOT prevent you from getting repairs through sprint or insurance
HTC's warranty is lame anyway. You have to send your phone to them and it could be gone for a month.

This is funny because my already htcdev rooted, and reverted back evo is now in Texas for my camera repair. No mention
yet that I have voided my warranty, we'll see what happens. They better not say rooting fuk'd my camera, it went out gradually.

The disclaimer said that it may void parts of the warranty, so I'm hoping they'll still fix hardware issues like that. Unless they want to start making claims about rooting breaking things at a hardware level.

Not sure if you have rooted a phone before, but i just rooted my phone for the first time last weekend this way and it's really easy. Best of luck but i don't think you should have any issues figuring it out though.

So, my predicament is a little different. Prior to the OTA update (not sure what the OS version was at that time) I used the one click script root method to root my phone, it worked perfectly. With root access, I installed GooManager and installed TWRP recovery. After that I used the Panda S-Off method to get to s-off. With all three pieces in place, I never flashed a custom ROM (primarily becasue they are all Sense based ROMs and I am looking for a way to fix the multitasking issue) because I realized that I didn't clear out my Google Wallet settings prior to rooting my phone. After reading a few threads on the NFC sensitivity I decided to RUU my phone back to stock to try to recover my NFC/Google Wallet functionality. After RUUing my phone, I was surprised to see that the bootloader was still reporting s-off, but recover was back to stock and I had no root access. I was able to recover NFC and get GW working again. At this point the OTA came out, so I decided to take it. Now I am on the latest OS version 1.22.651.3 and there is no root method available except the HTC unlock. I'm just wondering if there are any "unique" options for me since I have s-off, but don't have root?

Really? I don't know why but I was under the impression that if you were HTCDev unlocked that it would invalidate any repairs or replacements through Sprint as well. I figured they had an agreement to communicate this to one another. Have you had personal experience that can validate this?
[edit] I suppose you would just relock the bootloader and then unroot and Sprint would have no idea you ever did anything? Is this correct?

Sprint does NOT care if you are rooted. They will still repair the device if it is not rooting that directly caused the issue. Its a company wide policy.

Theres no reason to wait. S-OFF wont wipe your data or anything like that. Do it while you still can. You can S-OFF the device and run the bootloader customizer so it shows S-ON and locked.

the last time I rooted a phone was when the evo 3d dropped. so everything since then is over my head. since Im still on 651.1 I'm trying to figure out what steps I need to follow and what different options/ways of rooting there are. What's the best way? I see this way http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577 and the regaw and the lazy panda and I think a few more. I just want the phone fully rooted like my evo and evo 3d were. but I'm reading about google wallet, rooting, unlocking bootloader, s-off, custom recovery, I thought this was all done in a step or two before...

It is pretty much 2 steps
Use this first (STEP 1):

Everythings automated. When you get S-OFF you can flash a custom ROM, or leave the one you currently have. Just remember to never take an OTA
I'd suggest running the bootloader customizer too once S-OFF has been achieved. Once again, all automated

Appreciate the reply. It's been years since I was a Sprint customer, last phone I had with them until now was a Blackberry Curve 8330, so their policies with various Android stuff is still new to me but I'm glad to hear it's not a big deal. I think I may actually htc unlock this weekend then and finally give some custom roms a test run.

Use the RegawMOD root, its automated and easy and he updated it to the 1.22....3 version, only problem I had was installing the root.zip in TWRP at the end of the install, there are real good instruction on pages 81-83 of that forum to help if you cant locate the .zip file. Worked great for me and am rooted, no s-off though will have to wait till there is a reliable exploit, the lazy panda method is too risky for me right now.

I was wondering, given I cannot find any straightforward thread about this, I decided to create one. If you know if any, please feel free to point me there.
Long story short, my HTC EVO 3D was unlocked and rooted (4ext) S-ON with LeeDrOiD, and all was working smooth. Unfortunately, it started having this strange issue that if I pushed close to the antenna/camera it would turn off, and would turn on just after some time.
Sent it for repair after flashing back the original rom and relocking, got it back with another motherboard.
Now, HTCDEV unlock code won't unlock it any longer, and HTCDEV support are just a bunch of retards who have no idea what a smartphone looks like (and I really can't say I got patience with callcenters that just bounce you back and forth with emails that carry nothing but air).
I got the ICS upgrade then when it came out, although I must say I really wasn't that much eager about it, but it was so annoying that I let it go through. I find it to be very bugged in a lot of departments and very unstable, and was wondering if in the meanwhile someone had found another way to unlock this device aside using the HTCdev site (so I might try King Cobra's or some other ICS cooked roms).
Any guesses? Personally, I have to say, I'm guessing I'm never gonna get another HTC in my entire life. I had HTC from the Diamond 1 phone, but this stupid policy they have now really ticked me off, and to "ensure unlock" but to deny it in such childish ways definetly isn't something I expect from an Enterprise such as them. Guess SAMSUNG, or NOKIA with WM8 will serve my needs better...
For the time being though, if anyone of you guys had any insight...

Offcourse it won't unlock with the same code... you basically got a whole new device. follow all the steps on the htcdev site again and you'll be unlocked.
I find the customer service of htc to be just fine.

Hello all! I had to get my DNA replaced under warranty. Tried to understand this whole root/bootloader/rom/s-off business and I am having a hard time. Since this is a replacement, it will not have the newest software downloaded from Verizon. I believe this means I can still obtain "S-Off" easily?

Most replacements do have the new software. You may get lucky to get older version. You may not have heard but beaups has achieved s off on the new software 2.04 and 2.06. He has yet to release the method.

Verizon put a patch in the hole we were crawling through to get unlocked and then s off. In the 2.04 update, They blocked the hole and kept it blocked in 2.06.
The exploit used was called Super CID unlock, and it allowed us to change the CID (Carrier ID) from Vzw_001 (think of this as carrier call letters) to a generic CID (22222222). So if the CID was changed BEFORE the 2.04 update the phone could be unlocked. If it wasn't changed prior to the update it wasn't changed at all of them killing the method.
Q.) Why 22222222 ?
A.) HTCdev.com bootloader unlock process would work on the DNA, but Verizon drew a line in the sand and told HTC, "nuh uh, now way girlfriend. Our CarrierID, or CID, will not be part of your shenanigans"
So HTC has their bootloader unlock process make sure your phone isn't a Vzw_001 CID, since its 22222222 it passes the check, the tool works, and you're unlocked and can proceed to root your phone.
But once it was stuck on Vzw_001 there was no way to use the htcdev.com unlock process on a locked and stock DNA.
Q.) What's JTAG?
A.) It bypasses everything being locked and unlocks it via hooking lots of tiny wires to the motherboard. It's opening the phone, connecting a special machine to the board inside that flashes firmware at the lowest level, and it isn't affected by a locked hboot because its access is direct to the board, like the process HTC might do when they take a blank S4 and make it a DNA board and firmware for all the components. If a phone is completely bricked no power from the battery, JTAG can still flash it back good as new because it powers the board itself through its connection.
Q.) Sounds labor intensive and expensive
A.) It is compared to free but for the work they do IF it's quality work, it's worth it because of how involved it is. This isn't like just pushing an ADB command.
Q.) So what does this all mean?
A.) Up until the last couple of days it meant if you wanted your phone rooted or unlocked you had to send it to be JTAG'd but it came back as good as new and ready to rock
Better Answer: S-off has been achieved on the new software updates. It will be available to the public very soon. So Just sit tight, but hopefully you learned something. I will clean this up later I was in a huge hurry. Sorry for typos and fragments.
