Rooting a samsung galaxy s2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im trying to unlock it to all networks but first got to root it, now downloaded the files and tried to get the correct insecure kernal but cant find the exact one (i9100bvkh1), now when i try load an insecure kernal i open odin and select pda but the file types (md5,tar,smd) are not the file type that the kernal is so cannot select it. Tried renaming the files without any look.
Can any one help me out here?

Your two main choices are [03.11.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG*, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8, KJ1/2 - su+bb+CWM4] and [30/OCT][ROOTING/UNROOTING] Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit [v1.0](zergRush Exploit).
Hard to know where you're getting stuck because I don't know what you downloaded, but assuming you use the first method, as per the instructions, you have to unzip the attachment which leaves you with a .tar file you can flash.
Please, please, please, don't just rename files and try and flash them.

Thanks for the reply mate, do I need the kh2 kernel as it isn't on there?

I'm not sure where you got kh2 from, your first post mentioned i9100bvkh1.

If you're struggling at this stage, I think you should consider stopping what you're doing and walking away before you destroy your phone.

Sorry ignore me made a mistake it is the kh2 where do I get this kernel from can only see 1,3,4 etc

Not being funny make but usually things like this are easy but just confusing me as It isn't a file type come not hard to open a file up in a program but can't if it don't show
Right the kernel isbvkh2 and android version is 2.3.3 which kernel should i download?

phone not flashing or booting; any ideas ?

good evening
my friend gave me his phone(sgs2 i777 at&t) so that i can flash for him a rom and i accidentally flashed an i9100 rom and now the phone wont flash anything.
the phone wont even boot either.
ive been trying to flash using odin
the phone is recognized by my win 7 computer and luckily i still do get the yellow bar on odin when i connect the phone.
each time a rom(.tar in pda section)(repartition unchecked) is flashed i get a fail
evin the one click odin didnt work and fails
then the phone says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"
the only way i can get back to download mode is when i flash the root(GalaxyS2ATTRootZedomax) via odin
i cant get into cwm nor am i sure if there is cwm or not.
I9100JPKJ2_I9100OJPKJ1_I9100XXKI4_HOME.tar.md5
this is what i flashed
it has no pit
Zedomax is outdated. Simple search would of brought you to this:

i did an extensive search, ive seen this thread before (the DL links are also blocked by FEDS)
ive tried the one click stuff and also it didnt work
I tried to download the I9100 package that you flashed to see exactly what is in it, but it was downloading at only about 10 kb/sec, so I gave up after a couple of hours. I'm guessing that the package contains everything including boot.bin, sbl.bin, param.lfs, pit and csc for the I9100, as well as the other stuff.
If you still have the tar.md5 file, open it with winzip or 7zip or something like that and report back here exactly what it contains.
Most of the files you will need to recover your phone are in the Download Repository, but there are no specific directions there about how to use them in your situation. Will try to help, but am very busy with work for the next few days, so won't be here as often as usual. Be patient.

this is the zip and it only has tar.md5
this is the only thing i get on the phone
and this
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
also using heimdell all i know how to do is adding driver using zadig which is succesful
no clue how to due command line stuff
Remove the .md5 extention leaning just the .tar extension. A tar is an archive file just like zip or any other archive. Look inside the tar and tell me what files it contains.

Go to the download repository. (Link in my signature, or in one of the posts above.)
Find and flash this Odin3 One-click Downloader:
I777UCKH7-CL503881 FULL Odin3 One-click Downloader: I777UCKH7-CL503881-Full.7z (MultiUpload - Contains I777UCKH7-CL503881-Full.exe.)
Just in case it doesn't flash successfully, please watch the results to see which elements pass and which one fails. Someone else in your situation had it fail on cache.img, but was eventually able to recover his phone.
This is no more risky than the I9100 that you flashed, but there is always some risk involved when flashing bootloaders.
I'll check in tomorrow to see what your results are.
you do realize you are supposed to EXTRACT the tar out of the zip right? i mean how can ODIN see a file thats INSIDE an archive?
not to mention you are flashing i9100 firmware/bootloaders/param.lfs, basically you are trying to ruin your phone
Try and change USB Slot?

So if there is a kind soul out there that can point me to the correct files, and explain it step by step, i will be forever gratefull!
Yes, I know there are some guides, and i have tried reading them.. But I dont want to **** this up, as I need the phone tomorrow for work :/
So, please, if you can help me, i will be very gratefull
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S2
Country: Norway
Check the model under the battery.
Go to sammobile.com and get your ROM for your region.
Or use checkfus downloader and get the ROM for Norway.
Also mind you, You can flash any region ROM for i9100 in your phone.

I must then go to download mode on phone, and what settings should i have when i now flash?
Should i use the PIT file?
The guide from sammobile was just a repair guide, didnt help me at all..
I have I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_NEE.zip.
I have Odin.
What now?
Whatever you do, don't use the PIT file.

Ok..
But what do i need to do then?
I have the I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_NEE.zip (should i extract it?).
And Odin ready.
Do I need more files?
Follow the flashing guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Chris.
No don't use pit, don't know how you get that.
Just extract the zip file you will get tar.md5, put it in pda under Odin.
Also the file you got is ics, just to let you know, if that matters.
So this is how i understand it after reading alot.
1. Unzip the I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_NEE.zip
2. Open Odin 1.83
3. Choose the unzipped file I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5 as PDA.
4. Flash without ticking ANY of the options in Odin.
5. Sucess??
Can someone PLEASE confirm?
Already linked above the guide

Apologies for using caps.. This is my first thread on this forum.
After Rooting which ROM should i look for.
I need a Stable ROM also which provides good battery life.
How about CM9?

If when you say "this kernel suggested above", you're talking about the one Cosmic Blue suggested - then yes. All you have to do is flash it via Odin, and you're done. Your phone will be rooted just by flashing that kernel.
That guide you linked from CNet assumes you use a different insecure kernel, which is linked in the guide, and requires the additional step of using the S2Root application from your computer. This is unnecessary if you use the CF-root kernel suggested by Cosmic Blue.
Yes the one suggested by cosmic blue.
So just flashing This insecure kernel my phone wil be rooted right?
No need to to run s2 root as mentioned in cnet.
So i should be getting the triange aftrr running Odin and loading the kernel.
Link to remove triangle?
R u sure that i dont ve to run s2 root. I'm gonna root with 15hrs

Yes, I'm sure. Don't believe me? Read a bit about CF-Root yourself here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399.
You don't really need to remove the triangle unless it REALLY bothers you. It doesn't affect the operation of the phone. If it bothers you that much, search for TriangleAway in the Play Store. (You could also find it here on XDA, but buying it through the Play Store donates money to Chainfire, the developer behind both TriangleAway AND CF-Root... Both tools you would end up using.)
Didnt get about copying some zip file ti sd card?
Do i ve to do that too?
Can u please once list the steps i have to do for the cf root procedure.
(Donot mention what to tick mark in odin etc)

Dude, steps are in post 1 of the CF-root thread I already linked.
Do I have to Install Zip from SD card as mentioned in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399.
Bit confused now,Can anyone list the steps I have to follow ?
Here is what i know
1.Select Debugging
2.Run Odin, put phone in download mode and connect to PC via USB
3.Select PDA and select the insecure kernel.
4.Run CF root.
totally Confused ?!!
if you are using odin. follow these steps.
1. unzip the cfroot file into a folder on your computer as you need the tar file when using odin.
2. Put the phone in download mode by turning off the phone, holding the power, menu and the down volume but at the same time until you get to the download screen, push the up volume button when it asks you to continue.
3. start odin and wait till it shows a yellow or blue light dsepending on the version you are using.
4. In the phone slot, insert the tar file you unpacked earlier by browsing to it.
5. Do not change any other settings and hit start, wait for odin to finish and reboot the phone. You will then be rooted if you have done everything properly.
the other methods is for those people who are already rooted and using CWM to upgrade their root when upgrading to 4.0.4 from older firmware, do not worry about it.

OMG.
The bit with instructions telling you to put the zip on the SD card is mentioned right under a bit of bold text that says: "Instructions - If you already have CF-Root". Since you DON'T already have CF-Root... ergo don't follow these. I really cannot see how this is confusing.

Help! Which file do I use?
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense.

And in your case, even this is irrelevant since you shouldn't be using cf-kernel anyways. your firmware version has the emmc brickbug issue. I can safely assume you haven't read up on that either, else you wouldn't be asking this question.
Read HERE
Go to gokhanmoral.com, download the TAR version of siyah kernel v4.1.5 for the S2 and flash it via Odin the same way you would've flashed the cf-root kernel.
Or for an even simpler method, read THIS.

I found the stock ATT Kernel unzipped it, installed it through Odin. It put me back to Gingerbread. Currently installing ICS through Kies.
It appears that you are up and running again....please look at the "note super everything thread" located at the top of the general section..
There you will find all of the current rooting, flashing threads for your device....
Then read, read, read, and read some more so you fully understand the process, and could do it in your sleep. "Then" you will be ready to jump into kernels, modems, and custom roms....
And for future reference, Please stay away from youtube as an instructional video.....while they make for good entertainment, they often lack the technical side of the installation process, and can leave out important steps in the process...getting users jammed up with no help available...
We are happy to help you here, anytime......g

Hi!
I just tried with the XXLQ7 kernel, and it worked for me. did you enter the password when extracting the zip?
anyway: there are easier ways to root than this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20075898&postcount=8
these kernels are prerooted and come with SuperUser App, BusyBox support and CWM*. And you don't need to use that "Samsung Quick Root" thingie. just flash the kernel in odin, the same way the other guide explained. (sidenote: afaik it doesn't have to be the exact same kernel (e.g. XXLQ7 or whatever) but only the same android version. no ICS kernel on GB rom but else you should be fine. if possible use one with v5.5 or 5.6)
if you really can't get odin to work (I guess you are using v.1.85), search for it on google, and use the newest version. (mine is 3.04, maybe there's a newer one alerady.) I've never heard of that problem, but one never knows.
*an app, very handy for backups!
