[Q] Weird error - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I'm getting a really weird error and I can't figure out how to fix it.
----------------------------------------
The application Google Search (process com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
----------------------------------------
Anyone have any ideas?

sounds like you either had a bad flash, or you restored system data with titanium backup.
back up the stuff you need, go into cwm recovery, and do a wipe data/factory reset. you will have to set everything up again, but this should take care of your force closes.
if you continue to get force closes, then try to re-flash the ROM you are on (after wiping data/factory resetting).

Is there any way to fix this without re-flashing? I spent a ton of time tweaking everything to get what I wanted and would have to re-do everything.

you could try settings > applications > manage applications > all > google search > clear data
i'm far from 100% positive that google search is the process that is force closing... and even if that is the correct process, i'm not sure that this will permanently solve your problem, but i think it is worth a shot. i think this will clear all of the data from your google search widget, which i assume is what you are trying to use when you get the error.
let me know if it works!

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try, but still no luck. Any other ideas?

When are you getting the error, are you using the Google search widget?
Did you try backing up and wiping cache/factory reset as other user suggested? When restoring with TuBu restore MISSING apps only.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)

I only get the error when I try using the Google Search function - either with a homescreen widget, or by pressing the hardware search key on the device.
So, what you're suggesting is that I back up my current rom/settings using Titanium Backup, wipe cache / factory reset with CWM, then restore the backup using Titanium, but for missing apps?
That would give me my current setup, but with any missing system apps?

Fix Permissions and wipe cache/dalvik (both in CWM) - if those fail, time to wipe data and restore your apps in TiBu.

Thanks for your suggestion, Entropy. I reset permissions and wiped both caches, but still have the same issue.
I think what is causing this is that I deleted the system app "ApplicationsProvider.apk", which appears to be related to the Google Search app. I previously tried to restore the file manually using Root Explorer and my original backup and I don't think it fully restored.
Could I use Titanium to restore this file if I've never made a backup with Titanium?

If you never backed it up, then you can't restore it. You could do a google search for the .apk, or else you can see if someone on these forums will pull theirs off of their phone and upload it for you. But you're really better off wiping and starting over at this point.

I have that apk from my original CWM backup before I loaded Cyanogen. I tried to restore using Root Explorer, but it doesn't seem like it "took".
It shows up in my system applications area in SystemApp Remover. But, when I try to delete it again using the program I get an error: "Application not found. The application was not found in the list of installed applications."
Any ideas?

What have I done?

I've flashed the task650 and phantom rom. Then installed titanium back up from the market and restored all of my apps. It then said that the android launch error has stopped or something.
What have I done wrong and how can I fix it?
Did you also let TiBu restore all your settings as well? or JUST the apps? Did you restore an app that was included in the ROM?
When switched ROM's you should only restore apps that are not on the device already. You also should be careful with all settings that you restore as well.
For me, I restore the missing apps, that I still want, with data along with accounts, BT pairings, and WiFi settings. That's it.

Oh, and to fix it, I would just hard reset your device, verify that all is running as it should, and then begin installing your apps again.
This is what I think the sequence of what I have done is.
-Obviously rooted my tablet.
-Backed it up with Rom manager and copy and pasted the back up to my PC as well as the back ups of the apps and settings from titanium.
-Downloaded and transferred the task650 and phantom rom to my tablet.
-Flashed it and deleting the cache and dalvik etc in the process.
-Followed the process of not selecting google during the factory reset and changed my wifi settings and synced google once the flash had finished.
-I then went to the market place and reinstalled titanium from their and restored the apps and data.
-It was at that point when I could not get back onto the android desktop (if thats what its called.)
Now when I click the power button I can unlock it and it brings up this box:
Sorry! The application Launcher (process.com.android.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close or report.
If I hold the power button I see a recovery option with rom manager icon and a download option.
So to answer your question I did let TiBu restore setting as well because I am a total noob. I more than likely did restore an app that was in the rom.
I can't really see if all is running as it should because if I force close the error message it just goes blank and brings the error back up.
I haven't bricked it have I? I hope to god this is fixable.
You are not bricked. I would just follow the steps again on the Task650 and Phantom thread to re-flash the ROM, and just start over. Once you have re-flashed, then reinstall TiBu and then begin restoring only the missing apps with their corresponding data. DO NOT RESTORE any settings or any apps that are already in the ROM unless you know specifically that they are safe to restore (MOST ARE NOT).

Thanks for your help I'm back on ok after a hard reset. I think its back to the way it was before I restored apps and data off tibu.
Im already on the task and phantom rom after the reset so do I need to still reflash the rom?
I'm not really bothered about reinstalling apps, but is their any I should restore?
Would downloading an app from the market I had on the previous rom cause problems?
No, you do not need to re-flash if the hard rest took care of your problem.
The only apps to NOT restore are the ones that are already on the ROM, as that may cause a conflict. Apps that you have downloaded from the market in the past, and that are not currently in the ROM should be ok to restore with TiBu.
Again thanks you have been very helpful.

Correct. To be safe don't restore any system settings or system apps. these show green in titanium. This error if from restoring sudden data on launcher. Task snuff phantoms tom uses a different launcher from stock touchwiz.

Thanks.
I've just left it as it was to be safe, was not to bothered about my apps or settings anyway I'm happy to start over.
So to avoid anything going wrong in the future, do I not update my tablet?

[Q] Restore Apps through CWM?

Hey all,
So I just purchased Titanium Backup Pro and was wondering if it was possible to restore apps through CWM, or maybe have Titanium Backup as a root app, so that way when I boot up from a fresh wipe, I'll have all my apps available.
Dumb question time: after wiping and going through the first-time setup screen, when it asks you for your google account, should I uncheck the "restore from google account"? If I don't, it'll automatically start downloading all my apps from the market, thus defeating the purpose of Titanium Backup.
Thanks!
Not entirely a waste. See the root is what makes it amazing.
Lets say you have your inbox that had messages of personal keep, Wife? Gf? or possibly both LOL, those data are saved in root folders, TB Root version tends to back up all of this data, every single message from every person, when you reformat the tablet you obviously lose all your data, but TB Root can restore the data, this includes save games, or memo's, settings, alarm setups, contacts too.
You don't really need to uncheck as you can stop it by tapping the X when you open market to stop all the downloads in general, or just turn the Wifi off LOL.
Also you can't really boot with all apps after a fresh wipe, It's like going for surgery to remove a scar only to have it back again LOL. You will need to re-install TB from market (as all apps will be wiped too, since you purchased it it will just redownload it properly) then you can restore it. Normally it saves under sdcard/TitaniumBackup
As for apps via CWM, that's how they install apps with Custom ROM's but it's not advisable since most apps that get forced into system/app don't always get updated, you need something like market doctor in TB to relink it to market so it updates again.
Thanks for the reply!
So what's your recommendation when re-starting after a fresh wipe? I hate waiting hours for all my apps to re-download from Market/Play, as I'm sure many others do, and I'm sure people have come up with far easier/quicker solutions. This is why I bought Titanium Backup, as I thought it was supposed to fix that problem.
Sorry for being a total n00b here.
That's the thing, after a wipe (Factory reset) you download TB from the market, it should already be there for you to download, as per the backup's are saved on your internal drive, as soon as you launch TB *Make sure the tablet is rooted after a wipe check as TB will mention it for you* after which you go to Menu->Batch->Restore "User apps and missing data" and it will show all the apps that you have installed, I would insist not to restore system apps as they would replace the system apps and you may get FC errors.
However when you are done restoring User apps, you can go to the restore tab, and tap on certain "System apps" these can be identified as apps with a red name/smiley, For example Tribuchet.apk is the launcher for ICS 10.1, if you tap it, and press "Restore Data Only" then it will restore the layout on how you had set up your desktop to be.
http://matrixrewriter.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=TB+-+User's+guide This guide is pretty nifty for TB user's who first start out.
PS: Make sure when you back up your stuff, that you backup both system and user apps, that way you can always be sure you didn't lose anything important
How exactly would you make a zip if you wanted to restore apps via cwm?

Contacts, Contats Storage apps missing after flashing new AOKP

I flashed the newest AOKP build (Galaxy Nexus Toro), and was getting the error process.android.process.acore has stopped working error. As found on a thread here, I cleared data for Contacts and Contacts Storage. This appeared to work.
I then attempted to restore the data for those two apps from Titanium Backup Pro. Now, when I attempt to open Dialer, it crashes immediately, and if I go to attempt delete the data for Contacts apps again, they aren't even in the list. They are also not in the list for Titanium Backup's backed up data either, mysteriously.
I've wiped Dalvik and tried re-flashing, but am not sure what to do beyond that. Can I fix this without factory reset and/or losing all data?

[Q] Messaging Apps Freezing

Hey guys,
I'm having issues with messaging apps on my virgin mobile S2. The issue came about the other day with the stock messaging app, where I would open any conversation, and when I go to close out of it, the app freezes and then gives the "unfortunately messaging has stopped". I tried clearing the cache in recovery mode and that has not helped. I have also tried downloading 2 new messaging apps and they are both having the same issue; freezing when I close out a sms conversation. Not really sure where to go from here. Do you think a factory reset would help? Also, is there any way to re-install the stock messaging app? I definitely did a system backup with Titanium Backup a while back, but the app is showing nothing as being backed up...and I foolishly deleted my messaging app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
-Mike
As a general response to asking "Will a factory reset help?", it's best to make a complete nandroid backup, do the reset and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, you can always restore the back up.
Doing a reset will recover the default messaging app, so I'd recommend it in this case. Titanium backup should recover all your data, but be careful when recovering sms data, as there may be some corrupted messages which cause crashes.

Do I need to unroot before I do the factory reset?
Root will disappear automatically!
If you're using a custom recovery, it may not remove root, however.
I just did a factory reset. It did not seem to recover the default messaging app; seems it is lost and gone forever. I can't seem to find the apk anywhere online either.
Installing stock rom via odin will restore all system apps, in this case messaging too, so find your stock rom and flash via odin.
Install a New ROM via Odin. Before this,It is better to do MegaWipes.

Titanium Backup crashing after factory reset

I've recently done a factory reset and now Titanium Backup crashes every time I try and backup/restore an app. It used to work fine but now I've reinstalled it and copied the 'TitaniumBackup' folder (that contains the backups) to where it was, so everything is as it was pre factory reset.
The uninstalled apps show up as normal with a line through, but if I select one it hangs momentarily and I get an error (Unfortunately Titanium Backup has stopped. Report/OK). I've cleared app data and uninstalled/reinstalled TB. This also happens if I select an app that I haven't previously uninstalled, so it's not just having a problem with my backup files.
I have absolutely no idea what could be different and causing this. THanks for any help.
Same problem for me...
