Hey guys,
I'm having issues with messaging apps on my virgin mobile S2. The issue came about the other day with the stock messaging app, where I would open any conversation, and when I go to close out of it, the app freezes and then gives the "unfortunately messaging has stopped". I tried clearing the cache in recovery mode and that has not helped. I have also tried downloading 2 new messaging apps and they are both having the same issue; freezing when I close out a sms conversation. Not really sure where to go from here. Do you think a factory reset would help? Also, is there any way to re-install the stock messaging app? I definitely did a system backup with Titanium Backup a while back, but the app is showing nothing as being backed up...and I foolishly deleted my messaging app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
-Mike
As a general response to asking "Will a factory reset help?", it's best to make a complete nandroid backup, do the reset and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, you can always restore the back up.
Doing a reset will recover the default messaging app, so I'd recommend it in this case. Titanium backup should recover all your data, but be careful when recovering sms data, as there may be some corrupted messages which cause crashes.

Do I need to unroot before I do the factory reset?
Root will disappear automatically!
If you're using a custom recovery, it may not remove root, however.
I just did a factory reset. It did not seem to recover the default messaging app; seems it is lost and gone forever. I can't seem to find the apk anywhere online either.
Installing stock rom via odin will restore all system apps, in this case messaging too, so find your stock rom and flash via odin.
Install a New ROM via Odin. Before this,It is better to do MegaWipes.

Hmm ... really strange.
Maybe a problem with your Google account.
But disappearing system apps ... ?!
If you have got a recent system backup, then recover it.
If not, I recommend to re-install a stock ROM (flashing with Odin).
Do a hard reset after flashing.
Root your phone (e.g. flashing CF-Root kernel).
This should bring back the missing system apps.
Good luck !
Whit a hard reset, you mean a factory reset, right?
And no, no backups
there is no way to reinstall those apps?

Hard reset: Dial *2767*3855# into your phone.
This will wipe internal SD card!
EDIT:
Please do a full system backup in future!
I backup my apps with Titanium Backup (free app from the Market) and make a system backup with CWM Manager app (which is included in my CF-Root kernel).
i'll be sure to do that next time, i wanted to do a Nandroid backup after rooting, but i kept delaying it... until it was too late
i guess i can backup my user apps now with Titanium, or should i just start from blank with a stock rom?
flashing the stock rom will also bring back the stock kernel?

Yes, the ROM contains kernel, modem and CSC.
You can restore all user apps you have saved with Titanium Backup.
Do not restore any system app.
Just to be safe.

a nice twist of things today, i have read some info regarding this issue on the webz and i decided to uninstall facebook and google+... and what do you know, my apps r back and working perfectly
but anyway, i'll proceed with the stock rom flash, just to be on the safe side
I'm getting a really weird error and I can't figure out how to fix it.
----------------------------------------
The application Google Search (process com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

Anyone have any ideas?
sounds like you either had a bad flash, or you restored system data with titanium backup.
back up the stuff you need, go into cwm recovery, and do a wipe data/factory reset. you will have to set everything up again, but this should take care of your force closes.
if you continue to get force closes, then try to re-flash the ROM you are on (after wiping data/factory resetting).
Is there any way to fix this without re-flashing? I spent a ton of time tweaking everything to get what I wanted and would have to re-do everything.
you could try settings > applications > manage applications > all > google search > clear data
i'm far from 100% positive that google search is the process that is force closing... and even if that is the correct process, i'm not sure that this will permanently solve your problem, but i think it is worth a shot. i think this will clear all of the data from your google search widget, which i assume is what you are trying to use when you get the error.
let me know if it works!
Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a try, but still no luck. Any other ideas?
When are you getting the error, are you using the Google search widget?
Did you try backing up and wiping cache/factory reset as other user suggested? When restoring with TuBu restore MISSING apps only.

I only get the error when I try using the Google Search function - either with a homescreen widget, or by pressing the hardware search key on the device.
So, what you're suggesting is that I back up my current rom/settings using Titanium Backup, wipe cache / factory reset with CWM, then restore the backup using Titanium, but for missing apps?
That would give me my current setup, but with any missing system apps?
Fix Permissions and wipe cache/dalvik (both in CWM) - if those fail, time to wipe data and restore your apps in TiBu.
Thanks for your suggestion, Entropy. I reset permissions and wiped both caches, but still have the same issue.
I think what is causing this is that I deleted the system app "ApplicationsProvider.apk", which appears to be related to the Google Search app. I previously tried to restore the file manually using Root Explorer and my original backup and I don't think it fully restored.
Could I use Titanium to restore this file if I've never made a backup with Titanium?
If you never backed it up, then you can't restore it. You could do a google search for the .apk, or else you can see if someone on these forums will pull theirs off of their phone and upload it for you. But you're really better off wiping and starting over at this point.
I have that apk from my original CWM backup before I loaded Cyanogen. I tried to restore using Root Explorer, but it doesn't seem like it "took".
It shows up in my system applications area in SystemApp Remover. But, when I try to delete it again using the program I get an error: "Application not found. The application was not found in the list of installed applications."
Any ideas?
Hi,
For the last 4 days or so whenever I flash a new ROM I keep getting this error @ random times, not even when I go to access the stock messaging app, sms stills works perfectly as well
After lots of research I have deleted the message.db, tried to do full wipes, factory resets and then flash Wanamlite Rom and there it comes back, tried other Roms as well same thing
I have a small suspicion it could be related to flashing different Siyah kernel's form 2.1 to 2.2 and now to 2.3
It just kinda seems to disappear after trying loads of things
....really frustrating.....any advice would be appreciated
What did you do after flashing a new rom or after a factory reset, did you restore anything from a previous backup at all?
All I would restore are my apps via Titanium but not system restores.
Don't think its that because I even get it when I restore to a perfectly good nandroid backup via CWM which never gave the issue but now suddenly does, even do full wipes before the restore as well.

simple solution
I also had a same problem.
I copied an old sms from SIM to Phone memory.
Then started the problem.
Then I installed the third party app "go sms pro"
and deleted the same old message from phone memory inbox.
Now the problem has solved and able to access the default indox.
I have had Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable installed on my s2 since December, first time I have had a real issue with it. This morning when I turned the phone on as soon as it gets past cyanogenmod boot logo I get a number of force closes the first is always Calendar storage and then Acore. This is followed by media, superuser, droidstats, email, whatapp, clock, google play, bluetooth share and titanium backup these are in a random order but always the same apps. Once I force close them the phone goes back to the boot logo then the force closes start again,in an endless cycle the phone is pretty much useless. I have access to download mode and clockworkmod but I would just like a way to backup my contacts and sms messages before I do a factory reset, or possibly a fix for the issue?
Any help appreciated =)
Plenty of apps on Google Play that enable you to backup/restore your contacts/SMS/call logs. I'd definitely do a factory reset.
I have apps installed for backup purposes but the FC's messages don't allow me to access them =/
Hmmmm. OK. That's a problem then.
I guess you could try flashing CM7 over the top of your current setup & hope that fixes things but it probably won't. So you could do a Nandroid backup in CWRecovery then do a factory reset or do a completely clean/fresh install, and from there you could use something like AppExtractor to restore your contacts/SMS/call logs from your Nandroid.
I attempted to recover a old backup but a got an error of md5 mismatch in clockworkmod. I have created a backup of the current system but the same error pops up if I attempt to recover, I did this to check if the backup wasn't faulty. Will I still be able to use the appextractor with this error?
If I can ill attempt a clean install of 7.2 that just got released and recover my contacts in the way you suggested =)
Good question. I don't know. Couple of times I used AppExtractor when I was running GB I didn't have any of the problems you're experiencing so I guess you're only going to know when you try it.

happens to me also
but still no luck with the solutions available ..
I flashed the newest AOKP build (Galaxy Nexus Toro), and was getting the error process.android.process.acore has stopped working error. As found on a thread here, I cleared data for Contacts and Contacts Storage. This appeared to work.
I then attempted to restore the data for those two apps from Titanium Backup Pro. Now, when I attempt to open Dialer, it crashes immediately, and if I go to attempt delete the data for Contacts apps again, they aren't even in the list. They are also not in the list for Titanium Backup's backed up data either, mysteriously.
I've wiped Dalvik and tried re-flashing, but am not sure what to do beyond that. Can I fix this without factory reset and/or losing all data?
