[Q] Download while screen is off - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, i've been bugged by this since the i9003 days.. While my sgsl was in froyo i can download while screen is off (using 3g) and after gb upgrade when i tuen off the screen download will stop.. After i bought sgs2 i thought it will change but the same thing happened.. I think it is a feature of Gb.. My question is, is there an app that lets you download over 3g even when the screen is off???

Do you have JuiceDefender installed? It shuts off data when screen is off by default. My S2 downloads over 3g or wifi just fine. I do use JuiceDefender though. I set it to allow a program to stay connected (opera, adownloader, etc). But that program needs to be in the foreground when screen turns off.
If you're having the issue with wifi, make sure the sleep policy is set to never.
Also, make sure your background data is enabled just in case if you changed it.

I don't use juice defender.. My data doesn't get disconnected, it just stops downloading when the screen is off but resumes after turning the screen on..

Your WiFi is set to turn off when screen is off you should be able to change this in WiFi settings as a side note it will cause more battery drain

I want to use 3g in downloading.. Will that work?

You don't have Tasker installed, do you?
Probably there is some 'battery saving' app installed that has a profile to turn of 3g when screen is off.

I have a same trouble. My connection stops while the screen goes off. My wifi doen't go to sleep and I already checked option "Never" in wifi sleep policy setting. I can't listen music online or even download file has a large size while screen turn off. If I turn on it again, downloading will be continue. I think this cause is JuiceDefender, however, after uninstall it nothing change

[Q] HotSpot goes to sleep

I am running the FR008 ROM and the included HotSpot App works great, but as soon as the screen turns off on my Aria, the Hotspot stops.
I have the HotSpot set to never turn off, but it still does. Anyone have some ideas on a fix for this?
Check to see if wifi is set to turn off when screen turns off. Maybe wifi and hotspot goes hand in hand

I checked that and it's set to "never".
Somewhere in that thread I remember attn1 saying that the wifi service itself ,even if you set it to never ,would sleep eventually and that it didn't wake reliably.but that doesn't happen untill the screens been off for several hours.

[Q] Tasker - can wifi on and wifi off profiles co-exist?

I have a profile that will turn off wifi after one minute if
display off context is true (Wif-Off).
I also have another profile that turns on the wifi if the following
contexts are met (Wifi-On):
1. Location is near home
2. Day is Fri, Sat, Sun
3. Time is 7am - 11:30pm
I created a task (Wifi Turn On).
When I first run the Wifi-On profile I see it as active my
notification bar and wifi is turned on. Once my phone screen is turned off I
assume the Wifi-Off profile becomes active and turns off wifi.
However, when I turn on the phone again, wifi does not turn back on?
Why? Does it not turn back on because the context has not changed
thereby not causing the profile to go through the Wifi Turn On task? I tried adding a display on context to the Wifi-On profile hoping it would make the profile run the Wifi Turn On task but adding this context prevents the profile from ever becoming active for whatever reason.
Is there I can make these two profiles co-exist? I would like to keep wifi turned off whenever not is use to save battery.
Did you add an exit task to the Wifi Off profile? So that when the screen comes on, wifi is enabled...

Thank you for the reply. The problem with adding an exit task to Wifi Off profile is that I dont want wifi to turn on all the time, which is why I created the Wifi On profile. I only want wifi on during certain times and days and while I near my home. For example, I dont want wifi to turn on while I am at work.
How about Keeping your wifi on profile, and setting your wifi sleep policy under advanced wifi settings, to turn off when screen is off. Then just set up an exit task to turn wifi off when your "on" criteria is not met.
Honestly though I think it saves battery to just keep wifi on, even when screen turns off, so your phone is not constantly checking for cell signal.
Using the "cell near" context won't use much extra battery I don't think? I use it for my location based profiles.

Yes you are right about that. However I am referring to when he is actually connected to wifi, I've read it actually saves battery to just let it stay connected rather than turn off and on again depending on screen state.

Nice article..however I think in my case it makes more sense to turn off wifi when the screen turns off. Even at home, my phone spends much more time off than it does on. I also have my phone to not sync emails, data, etc only on demand. So I think for me, it save battery to turn off wifi when the screen turns off. However, that is still good information.
In that case the wifi sleep policy should work for what you want.

EDIT: forget it...did a little google search...so wifi sleep and off are the same thing.

Apn turn on all the time - help

Hi,
Since this morning my apn/data start automatic, and does not turn off!
Normally i used a toggle to turn it on and off. The toggle still works - i can turn it on - and off - But it then turns on itself. The only way is to disable package data in settings. Any on got that problem or a solution?
Funny thing is my tab just started doing the same!

Tasker WIFI automation

For some reason, when I set the "keep WIFI on when asleep" setting to "never", my wifi still takes up 80% off my battery. Does anybody know how I can use Tasker to make my wifi shut off as soon as the screen is off, and turn on as soon as the screen is turned on? I can not find anything that works!

Make a new profile, add event, display, screen on. Make a new task, then choose wifi on under net. Make a second profile, event, display, screen off. New task, task, wait, add a certain amount of time to wait before turning wifi off (I'd do 5 mins), then add wifi off.
This should do it, though I'm telling you this out of memory. If anything, it's similar.

I have been using JD ultimate beta for ages.
and it's one of those applications that I can't live without.
At the moment, I have the following settings and it made my life so much easier:
Data, Wifi (auto disable) - turns off wifi and data automatically
network mode (2g/3g) - switches to 2G when my screen is off (saves batteries)
Schedule - during the day, it turns on connectivity for 30seconds every 15 minutes for whatsapp, at night, it's off.
Location wifi - when I'm near my house, it will turn on wifi and leave it on
Brightness - custom auto brightness curve.
With all those tweaks, I'm getting around 2.6x battery life (reported by juicedefender)

Hi,
I have it also but network mode (2g/3g) - that switches to 2G when screen is off does not seem to work. when I wake up my display it is still in 3G.
I know that it is a beta feature.
Does it work on yours?

Nope. Don't run it, don't see a need to. I'm getting nearly 7 hours and sometimes more of on screen time and plenty of standby time with this phone. Juice Defender would just be another 'bloat' as far as I am concerned.
Working great for me, same as it always has
