I have Exchange email setup on my S2 with ActiveSync. Email pushes fine but I'm trying to use the Sync schedule feature in Email > Account settings.
My Peak schedule is set to manual and times are 8am-5pm. Peak days are set to Mon-Fri. I don't want email sent to my phone when I'm at work because I'm on my computer and don't need it.
My Off-peak schedule is set to Push. So Sat-Sun and non-wotk hours I should get push email. The problem is none of this seems to work. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
Any days on the Peak schedule are colored white. The other days (Sat-Sun) are black.
Do have this setup correctly? it seems like I get push almost all the time.
Mine behaves the same way (Android version 2.3.4 with build UHKG7). I reversed the times for peak and off-peak, i.e., push during peak and manual during off-peak hours in your case, and it seems to follow the off-peak setting all the time... Don't know why this is happening, but I am surprised that not many users report on this problem... Can't prove it, but it might have something to do with the use of 12/24 hour format in time setting?
I have the same problem.
I also have to set "roaming Data" on even though under the phone info it says that the phone is not roaming.
Mine seems to either push all the time or not at all. Annoying as I was the email to push during the working day and manually in the evening,
I'm surprised that this has not been reported more often.
I flashed to a 2.3.5 Frankenstien today and this made no difference.

Regarding "... to either push all the time or not at all," would you please check whether you set "push" in your off-peak schedule? Thanks.

If I set PUSH in the peak and off-peak, the mail will be pushed all the time regardless of schedule.
If I set peak to push and off peak to manual. It will not push when the peak schedule becomes active.
It seems I must have push on both on and off peak to get the mail to push.
If either is set to manual or the data roaming is off, it will not push.
When we select Peak Days in Sync Schedule, the days selected (for peak hours) should be in DARK; NOT colored white. Under the same peak/off-peak hours defined before, I DARKENED the days selected for peak hours and it works for both peak and off-peak schedules. Would you please try and see if darkening the selected days work for you?

This is correct. It messed me up a lot too, and Samsung should really do something about this. The only hint is that Saturday and Sunday are white by default, and those are usually Off-Peak dates for most people.
Thank you for confirming, Claimui. Now we can move on with this important function working
I should have remembered the hint that Sat and Sun came in while by default, but a smart phone shouldn't count on user's awareness as such when we were eagerly setting it up to make it work.
Hi.
OK I have been setting LIGHT as the peak days.
hhhhmmmmm.
Here's a shot of what I have now.
Hopefully Monday - Friday 07:30 to 16:30 Push. All other times Manual.
Lets see.

Yup that should work.. You should know after 16:30 today or, to expedite (as I did), adjust Peak End Time to the next hour and see if it switches to Manual, then adjust the Peak End Time back to 16:30. I still use Manual in "While Roaming" to avoid excessive charges when travelling overseas.
I Played arund with this afterwards and it seems to work but if I change the schedule, I must sync manually to tell the server the change of times.
Is the "Push" function initiated by the exchange server or the phone. "Push" seems to mean that the server needs to know your schedule and thetrefore will require a sync to tell it of any changes.
Is this correct?
I am glad it works for you now.
You shouldn't need to sync manually after you change the times because the "Push" function (and other time periods) is stored in and initiated by the phone. Server is always there, the "Push" and other time periods only instruct the phone how often it should connect to the server to sync/check emails. After you set "Push" in Peak Schedule, for example, your phone "scans" the server very frequently, which can be seen by staying on the Sync Schedule and watch the little "spinning clock" goes on and off when your phone triggers the scan.
In looking to set mine 8:45 - 17:45 peak Mon to Fri then every 3 hours at weekend, would this be possible?

You are a precise person You can set the starting and ending times, but the period (every three hours indicated above) must follow the ones listed in the Peak/Off-Peak Schedules. The closest seems to be every 4 hours..

I'm happy to report it's working for me too! My peak days are DARK and time is set to push from 17:00-08:30 (so all night). It's now 18:00 here and I've been testing this all day. It's running like a champ
No push all day - perfect
Push started at 17:00 - perfect

With .6, my battery is draining very fast. For example at night, I go into airplane mode and in 7 hours the battery goes from 100% to 65%. This used to be from 100% to 95% in 7 hours.
Needless to say that the phone now don't holds a day on normal usage, even when I don't use 3G. Before the update the phone used to last 3 days on a full charge!
What is up with the phone? I've checked active services and all, but could not find something unusable.
Odd, I thought mine had actually got better under .6.
I would loose approx 1% of battery per hour overnight, same after .6, although I doin't use airplane mode.
I unplugged my mini off charge around 9pm Wednesday, it's been used for calls, browsing, music playback and a few photos, as of now, 8am on Friday, the battery is at 50%
Admitedly it had a extra few minute on charge inbetween while I pulled a few photos off via usb, but no more than 5 minutes at the most.
Well, i don`t know if it is because of .6 update or launcher pro home screen, but my battery drains also very fast. It loses almost 35% overnight (3g, wifi off and phone in silent mode).
I don't use LP myself, Zeam all the way for me, but other than that, set up sounds similar, 3g/wifi off and in silent(not airplane) mode.
In the hour or so since my last post, the phone has been in my pocket on the way to work and it's only this second dropped to 49%
Simply get some system info app, I recommend Advanced Task Manager, tho not for killing processes at start, but for showing winch ones runs in background (all apps tab). Why? Some processes, like Gmail Disc Space, or other (3) google apps can be killed with no consequences, and not only that, but Quick Search Window / Download Manager / Checking Service / Preferences etc. When You start some system app, like Market, they get back running. So You can easily save battery at night, or wherever You want.
For more advanced users I recommend getting autostarts app, and turn off processes that are loading when phone is in standby, or screen is turned off - most of them are totally useless... No kidding. Quick tip: ppirate said that he switch the airplane mode on for the night, but thats only one thing. The clue is to switch off any updates on widgets, or apps (autostarts). Sometimes they trying to update even if theres no connection, and that consumes battery.
Last recommendation - turn back to .24, or .504. I really don't understand why people updated...
I run my mini @ 600-600mhz all the time, deleted all non essential apps, switch off autostarts for 3rd party apps, and some system apps, and I'm doing stuff that I mentioned above - battery is in excelent shape, and stands for two days of intensive use, or four days standby + calls/sms.

Can you explain, wich system apps are safe to kill at startup?
I downloaded advanced task manager, and in idle it shows only three apps running:
go weather, juice defender (IMO doesn`t do anything, what it supposed to do), battery solo widget. All my updates are done manually.
I guess that apps that are safe for me to kill at start are: Google talk, since i`m not using it, SE Sync, timescape (might as well uninstall it, don`t use also).
And apps that i`m not sure of are: download manager, diagnostics tools and update service.
Finally, how can i downgrade to .24. Does it mean that i have wipe my phone and install custom rom or generic SE .24 rom?
For info, my phone is rooted and JIT enabled.
EDIT: So far I took my phone from wall charger approx 9am and for now (6pm) i have made few phone calls, wifi for about 1 hour and played abduction for like 15 min and my battery shows 57%, so i think by tomorrow morning my battery is dead:S

Even my phone lasts a day max... After initial 2.1 update it was 2-3 days... After that 1 day max.. With 3g,Wifi,Data off... I think its due to low signal strength in area....
Exactly, before update my phone reached even 4 days if not used often, but since the update, max is 1,5 days if i leave it on the table and don`t use it
EDIT: I think i finally solved my battery issue. I downloaded Watchdog Lite from the market to see wich widget or app takes a lot of resources at the background. For my surprise, my weather app (GO weather) took about 25% of cpu resources when running in background. Uninstalled it, installed another weather app and by now i fully charged my phone and since then (about three hours ago) it has gone from 100% to 98%. Before it was about 15% of loss.
So my suggestion is to download Watchdog and see if you have some programs that for some reasons take a lot of resources with the new update.
I really could not find the problem? Last weekend I took the trouble of doing a complete reinstall. Lo and behold! Still on the same charge after three days!
So I tried to get my work to get me a blackberry because I need to check my work email when I am not there at nights, weekends, etc. They saw I had a thunderbolt but I tried explaining how the battery wouldn't last. Well that wasn't good enough so today I synched my works email (corporate gmail account) to my phone and I am getting the push notifications just like I wanted, and the battery is terrible just as I said it would be. Is there any way to adjust how often it checks for new mail to push notifications through? I feel like there has to be some way but I searched and found nothing for the thunderbolt. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Not sure if this would work for you, but you could go into your accounts & sync setting and uncheck the autoupdate for your google business account (since I don't have one, not sure if it will allow you separate out google accounts). Then only go in and manually sync it when you need it?
The only thing with that is I have to manually sync which defeats the purpose of it

How much mail do you actually get pushed?
I get quite a bit of mail to my regular google account because I've tied all my other accounts to my google account and I don't have any real issue with extreme battery drain?
I had an android since the G1 first came out and with each successive phone I've gotten, I've never noticed that mail is a real big battery drain on any of them.
I would say 15-20 mails a day. However one of our clients is west coast based so I tend to get a lot after I leave work. This is definitely a battery killer by multiple hours. I'm going to try my damndest to get a blackberry and show them how awful it is but I need something in the mean time to get me through the day. My phone didn't last 9-6 today
I can't believe something as simple as an interval adjustment isn't built into the gmail app. I searched all over and several people have asked this but there is never a solution. I wonder if I could use another email app that is adjustable instead of the official gmail app.
The easiest solution is to check one of the apps, such as Juice Defender, that can turn off your network connection when not in use. You can set them to periodically enable them to turn data back on to allow things like emails to come through.
And GMail push notifications act just like Blackberry-style push notifications of email. It isn't constantly checking the server for new emails. It gets notified only when new emails arrive. Something else is likely causing your battery problems, not the push notifications. I'd check some of the battery threads around for other tips to increase battery life before making any major changes.
I've never heard of email being the culprit to any battery problems, so you might want to see if there are some rogue apps you have that are causing this battery drain.
As for email, I use Tasker. I have a profile that turns auto-sync on at 6:15 AM and every three hours after that at a quarter past, then I have a profile that turns auto-sync off at 6:17 AM and every three hours, so I only get email at a quarter past, every three hours
Not sure how elegant of a solution this is for you as you work for a company and might have some emails that you need to respond to ASAP.

I use Tasker as well, with it checking only between 6:30am - midnight. However, I check mine every 20 minutes normally. If they need to get in touch with me faster than that, they should have called in the first place. I played with Juice Defender prior to discovering Tasker though, and it is much easier to set up.(Just not nearly as powerful as Tasker, which I love playing with)

Push is more efficient than interval, that is why you don't see interval adjustments.
Well as others have said, I don't think it's the emails causing your issues. I get way more emails than that in a day and my phone comes off charger around 5am and doesn't usually get back on a charger until at least 9pm or later. I'm not saying I still have half a charge left, but I also don't have my phone yelling at me to plug it in either because it's low.
Hmm good to know about how those push notifications work. I guess it's just a coincidence that when I synched my email a couple days ago that I noticed the battery went noticeably down. I might try out tasker though. Thanks
It could have been also your signal strength when you were trying to sync that could have caused a bigger drain.
If you had a weak signal, your phone would have been trying to "juice" up the connection to keep you connected resulting in a larger than normal battery drain.
Just a thought.
this is true since I moved from central jersey (manalapan) to North Jersey (wallington) I am now in 4g constantly and maybe I should look into switching to 3g for a bit.

1 hour 12 min screen time and so little battery left is a bit less than normal. I get around 4 hours of screen time before my battery dies.
There seems to be a huge amount of time where the screen is not on but the phone is wide awake, which means high battery consumption. If you're talking on the phone or listening to music at these times when the screen is on, then it's normal. If not, then there is some app or widget keeping the device awake.
try freezing "wifi sharing" as well. Not sure if that helps but i see alot of wifi battery use.
Thank you for your reply.
In the case of calls, it is only 30 min as indicated by the pic above.
I do not listen to music on my phone at all, neither I have many widgets, the only widgets I have are: Modern Clock, Google Search, Accuweather.com widget set to refresh every 3 hours, Month widget.
also I have the windy weather live wallpaper and it is set to refresh every 1 hour.
So you mean that is not normal for stock configuration?

I am not rooted and do not wish to TBH.
however, I try to be connected to wifi for data as much as possible, as I have read somewhere that it does have better effect on battery than cellular data connection, that is why you see a lot of wifi.
One question please. How do you get the first screenshot ?
I can see wifi activity that suppose you have wifi enable all the time, is that right? As you can read, wifi sharing and other stuff around are battery consumers. You can read litening thread about this.
Other question, did you disable fast dormancy *#*#9900#*#* ?
And samsung apps disable notification even in wifi mode...

I have read about process freeze and other root activities, which I am not interested in.
I have also read that fast dormancy has no real effect on battery life, have you tried it yourself and did it work effectively? what was the difference in your case?
Thank you for the samsung apps thing, I will try that and see.
Just to clarify, I am not complaining about battery life or anything, I am just sharing my experience to make sure that whether this is normal or I am missing out on anything.
Regarding the fast dormancy stuff, I have read this thread and got contradicting results that confused me (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111581&page=4) I did have the "data network stuck" problem, but after factory format and with a little over 44 hours of uptime, I still didn't face it. I am afraid it is going to pop up again if I alter this setting. besides, fast dormancy is a network feature, I will check with my provider to see if they support it or not, although I get H+ in most of the locations I have been in while using data.
Has anybody confirmed that wifi sharing is the culprit, or even Ms exchange emails?

I think everyone was seeing wifi sharing showing up quite a bit under battery usage stats. It was using a good amount of battery on mine.
Wifi sharing, is there a way to disable it without root?
On another note, charging from 5% to full charge takes almost 3 hours and 45 minutes, is this normal?

@OP- If you haven't already done then calibrate your battery with Battery Calibration app by Nema from Market.
For me it worked pretty well.
Regards.
I am using litening ROM since v1.1
When version 1.5 was delivered, litepro rollbacked the delivery during one day or two days. Because, I was using v1.4, modem ke7 was the version I used and I tried to flash only the modem version to upgrade to the latest one (kf2). The benefit was important not only with data up but also when I put my phone in plane mode. But, I saw also a great improvement when I flashed the version 1.5 of litening with wifi sharing removed.
I don't really use data all day but for me with many samsung apps freezed with titanium backup (social, game, ... Hub). I have a great improvement with this rom. I will try to activate data and wifi all day tomorrow to see the battery impact.
without any custom roms, root related activities or any other warranty voiding stuff, do you guys still think that my battery utilization is abnormal with the amount of usage I have?
I have been experimenting with battery life and different scenarios, uninstalled Facebook, Twitter, Skype, fring and nimbuzz... However battery life didn't increase.
So decided to switch off data completely, and only work on wireless whenever available.
Looking at the screenshots below, i still see awake times with screen off, especially in the last periods...
My question is, how can I check what is keeping the phone "awake" while screen is off?
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You can check it with Watchdog but it will also drain some battery. So use ATK, you won't have a non-synchronized Awake and Screen On bar.
Regards.

Ms-exchange is the one for me... I then switched to "Enhanced email" and it had fixed battery life quite good..
download CPU SPY from the market and see if your phone is going into deep sleep.
reset the timers, then one by one, change variables until you find the culprit.
I think I found my culprit. Here check this out. Y is maps waking my phone 135 times?! It's only spouse to be doing it 1 time every 3 hrs. And that's for HTC clock. Any ideas on what would keep trying to get my location? the only sync i have set up is weather for the htc clock. but that updates every 3 hrs. google now is turned off, and so are all the setting in the maps app its self. however i do have both stand alone and google location services checked in location settings under settings. but not verizon. screen on time was about 1 hr. but data was turned off, and i dident touch my phone all day.

It appears you have Latitude enabled... disable it and your battery usage should drop significantly. Go into Maps - Settings - Location Settings and make sure Location Reporting is set to "Do not update your location" and all other options in this area are toggled off. Otherwise your location is constantly being reported back to Google for Latitude services, causing it to never being able to sleep properly.

maps works in conjunction with google location service.
if i look aty power settings in settings, i fid that maps is using between 4- 18% mostly in the double digits. now if i go to running in the apps section, it shows that maps and google services r running. if i click maps, it shows google location service, and maps. if i click on google services, it shows network location service, google messaging service, and google services. now if i go into GSam, it shows me that maps is top of the list, and number of wake locks is 121, #of times waking device is 105. gps ussgae is 2m 9 seconds, and cpu is 19 secs.
now yesturday gps ussage was 20mins, and number of wakes was 160. i did nothing different but restart the phone. i have my data turned off most of the day. sine im in school, i only look at the screen like 10x at most during the 7hr day of school. if i look at time up it is- 18hrs, and time off is 8hrs. maps and google services have been running for 5+hrs and counting. so something is trying to track my location through the google service and i know its not htc flip clock, cause i only have that set to every 3 hrs. my location dosent change at all during the day sonce im in 1 building all day.
any ideas, or apps out there that will tell me what is trying to get my location even when data is off???? i neeeeeeeed this fixed. im getting horriblke battery life. from morning to out of school when my screen on time is 30 mins at most, i ned the school day at like 60-50% and for not using it at all, it should be at 90-75ish. i can barley go through a whole day without hitting the charger....
Yeah. So turn off GPS when you aren't using it. I only enable it when I am routing or using maps. Otherwise, it just wastes battery.

You don't need GPS for the clock. Just VZW and maybe google location

You said GPS so which is it. You will always get google locations for the clock but it uses very little battery
Just use titanium backup widget to freeze maps

it should, but it shnot....
im almost positive it is google locations that making it wake up 160 times. i have the clock set to 3hrs to auto update. but keep in mind that its doing this even when data is turned off. so no 3g, 4g, E, etc.
in setting>power, it shows maps.
when i go into apps, then running tab in settings, then click maps, its telling me that the service is "Google Location Service" and the process is "maps"but then when it says location/description, it says com.android.apps.maps:GoogleLocationService.
when i click on google servises in running apps, the 2 services are Network Location service and Google messaging service. the processes are "Google Services" and the location/description is com.google.process.gapps
I have GPS enabled 24/7 and don't notice any problems except when Google Maps goes berserk and starts killing my battery. Normally, leaving GPS on doesn't drain the battery too much. I even have Backitude using GPS to update my location on Latitude every 10 minutes and it really doesn't hardly use any power at all...
im gonna download an app called startup auditor which auto kills everything, and ima see if it imporves....
Since you said you have frozen a number of apps, did you freeze HTC Location Service using Titanium. I don't know what it does, but someone else had suggested getting rid of it. Since I froze it, I have not noticed any negative feedback.
I don't know if it will make any difference to your situation. I am currently at 14 hours since last charge and have 130 wake locks in Maps. I also use GPS/Maps for an hour every morning while it tracks me using Cardio Trainer so I don't know if that would affect the wake locks.
I know I have heard people say this, but I just don't get that problem... I leave my GPS and all location services on all the time, use the Maps app daily (I deliver pizza part time) and never have battery drain issues. My personal phone is typically idle from 7:30 in the morning when I pull it off the charger until 5:00pm when I go to work, and I rarely use more than 1% per hour. The only app I have issues with is Facebook, and I just kill all tasks with ES Task Manager before blanking he screen after I use it (couple times per day). In my opinion. Facebook is one very misbehaving app, it reports your location and uses GPS even when you have all options turned off in it's settings, plus it will use it periodically if you have FB notifications turned on too. If you using the notifications, the Facebook app will even respawn by itself if you kill it, it's a very bad app! And with some battery monitors, any GPS activity will be reported as Maps! (GSam Battery Monitor is bad for this)
NOTE: The issue is not with the Android Dropbox app, it's with Dropbox on your Mac or PC on the same network as your phone.
I was having a bad battery drain on my phone while connected to my home Wifi - as much as 3-6% per hour while the screen was off. This happened both on the stock ROM as well as CM9 and CM10. I finally figured out the cause - the dropbox program on my regular computer had an option called "enable lan sync" turned on. Apparently this makes your computer constantly send out broadcast traffic across your wifi network to all devices on your network. Some phone modems will see that broadcast traffic and wake up, meaning very little deep sleep, meaning poor battery life. I disabled lan sync on the computer and now the battery life on my phone is insanely better! It drains maybe 1% per hour. Note this doesn't affect all phones, just certain chipsets/modems. The Galaxy Note seems to be one of the ones affected.
I've been monitoring wakelocks with BetterBatteryState for awhile, and always say a wlan_rx_wake under kernel wakelocks. I Googled periodically for a cause and couldn't find anything. Tonight I got lucky and found what I needed to narrow down the issue.
It hasn't completely stopped the wlan_rx_wake wakelocks (I suspect the ones I'm still seeing are for real wifi use like background synching), but it has made it drastically better.
No issues here with dropbox and Google drive on my phone.

Did you even read the post? The issue is when you have Dropbox installed on a PC (or a Mac) on the same network and the Dropbox program has the "enable LAN sync" option checked. This has nothing to do with an app on your phone.
This worked for me. I was at 3-5 percent drain per hour on my Note and since I turned that setting off on my pc, I still had 100% battery at 1 hour 52 minutes on battery. A definate improvement thanks!

Added to the Super Thread, under the tips and tricks section....great work.....g
as a matter of policy, I keep dropbox sync turned off on my phone and sync it manually when I need something.

Re-read the OP, that has nothing to do with what we're discussing here. The issue is not with the Android Dropbox app, it's with Dropbox on your Mac or PC on the same network as your phone.
I did read that, but I'd you understood my point then you'd see that by keeping the sync of, then the issue of locks or subnets, wouldn't matter

You're missing the point. The dropbox program on your machine is constantly sending out broadcast packets to all IPs on the network. Certain cell phone modems (it doesnt seem to affect all android phones but ours is one of the affected ones) see those and wake up the phone. It doesn't matter if you have the dropbox app on your phone. The PC is waking up the Android OS via the modem.
Found this through the super thread. Nice info. However, I had a hard time finding out how to turn off lan sync. I opened my drop box and couldn't find the options.... Then for the heck of it I right clicked on the tiny icon on the bottom bar of my windows 8 PC. found the cog wheel, preferences> and then the settings opened. And lan sync was indeed checked. I don't know if it will make a difference, but I unchecked it. Thanks OP.

Actually if DropBox app has the Sync setting turned off, then it doesnt matter if the PC is broadcasting or not. It shouldnt affect the device in anyway. If the app is made properly for the device, it wouldnt receive the signal since Sync is disabled. It wouldnt matter if the desktop sync was on or off, if the app sync was off. Cant have a sync if 1 of the 2 devices has it disabled.
So if your still getting battery drain and you can prove it is from this app, then you should contact DropBox and notify them that they have indeed messed up. I can prove my side of this simply. I have never disabled the Desktop App Sync. But I have yet to have any effect from my device.

Cant tell me that after 20 Hours on WiFi with the Desktop App Sync being on that I wouldnt show at least some life from DropBox on my battery usage. I can see usage from the Live Wallpaper, the game I played, Nova and others. But nothing to backup DropBox Desktop App Sync being on. So that tells me that DropBox has either updated their App since this was posted to prevent this issue, like it should do to begin with, or you open DropBox and forget to close it out. Cause I dont see anything to support DropBox using battery when not in use, even with Desktop Sync on.

Works for me too
Hi
I have dropbox 50.2.2 (Android 7.0, galaxy S8) and the phone started telling me yesterday that dropbox was using too much power (3-4%) and would I like to shut it down?. I had two computers with dropbox on my local network (onw linux, one windows 10) and both had lan sync on. I've turned lan sync off and dropbox has gone back to 0.09%/hr.
