well i guess you guys will know on 11/11/11 at 11:11AM.
sucks about the non-removable battery...
at least there's still the possibility of some sort of external battery device that'll connect to it's USB port.
my 2c
Mine is on its third charge, and its still getting better
charge overnight via AC,
unplug at 8am for a full workday
2 push email accounts with up to 100 emails a day (1 gmail, 1 exchange)
whatsapp messages all day
bluetooth on in the car for 2 hours a day
bit of browsing and RSS reading thru the day
10 minutes of calls
end of work day ~ 40%.
get to 20% at about 10pm
so enough to get thru a work day, if you need to go out at night, get a car charger or similar.

Very good and detailed information. Thanks!
if the battery goes that quickly with such minimal use, i'd be screwed big time. with my current setup(thunderbolt - no razr here till Friday) I have a 4500mAh extended battery + a 5000mAh external power pack(9500mAh total) I easily blow through that in less then a day.
I am a heavy data user though. constant HQ audio streaming, downloading, video streaming, etc. around 30GB/month on a slow month.

you're not on Verizon right? So not 4G/LTE?
That sounds like pretty good battery life to me on 3G!

Its on 3G, no LTE on my network here in Oz.
Is LTE supposed to be better for the battery?

hahaha, you do sound like a real heavy user, I dont have time to stream anything as I'm replying to the 100 push emails in an average work day!
Ps. My screen on time would be higher than most due to the typing.
I'm an average user, don't stream much at all. Granted, it's only the first day, but I charged this baby up and have been using it nonstop for email, web, and text for close to 5 hours and I'm at 50%. Played a couple of short videos as well.
As I said, it's the first charge so I assume the life will get better over the next couple of days. But so far so good.
To the guy who burns through nearly 10,000 MaH a day, there's no reason in the world you should get a phone without a removable battery!!!!

2 days with it now, getting better day after day... Smart Actions really a big add to the battery life.. On the first day, with out smart actions, It was over for 22 hours with good usage of internet/calls/display/music streaming from motocast etc..
And the next day, I have done some settings on smart actions, already 25 hours over, I still have 30% left though the same way I have used it on the first day... So, Thumbs-up Guys.... I expect it for another 4-5 hours as such we get it for 30 hours... That is better than any phone right now in the markret.. Smart Actions is the magic...
horrible battery life
I might be taking mine back. I've had it off the charger since 8:30AM, it is now 1:30 and the battery is at 30%. This is very unacceptable to me, especially since I really haven't done anything on it today. I really like the phone, but I can't have it charging all day.

You are, I'm assuming?
I've been off the charger for 4 hours and 15 minutes, and I'm at 70%, with moderate use and no smart actions, with a mix of 4G, 3G, and Wifi (it switcehs between 4G and 3G a lot). I'm satisfied with those numbers, especially considering I'm upgrading from an Incredible.
I'd give it an understandable amount of battery life credit. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. This is compared to my sgs2.

The battery counter of Atirx is by 10%. So, even it shows 90%, that may means 90% to 99%

Mine has been less than impressive today as well. Not good.
Mine seems to be pretty good so far. I think it'll take a few charges to get the most out of it though. I've used it a ton since about 10am and it's showing 80%. That could be anywhere from 80-89%.
Mines been sitting at 90% for about 3 hours now. It shows 90% when it drops down even a little bit because its only done in 10% increments. Pretty stupid if you have a phone to boast about battery... Motorola dropped the ball on that. You basically have a lowered battery meter all day lol
Thanks guys for all of the help!
My battery life has been decent, I unplugged it at 5pm yesterday, drove home with Trapster running (so screen on continuous for 30 minutes), used it heavily playing with it for a few hours in the evening, left it on to wake me up in the morning..
and drove back to work for 30 minutes with trapster when the 5% battery life warning went off right when I got to work.
No complaints here.
Unplugged the phone at 5am and it's 15mins to 12pm here - still full though I did laptop dock it for 5 mins several times to show people at work.

After 4 hours, I am at 75%. Email, tweaking, texting, 2 hr conference call on BT (Finiti w/Motospeak). If you check settings, Battery Manager, touch the Battery... you will see a usage breakdown. This phone is amazing. I expect after a few full charging cycles, the battery should get to full strength.
Is there a way to disable the 3G radio to save battery life (like in the iPhone)?

+1. Do a few charge cycles and then see how you feel.
I got my phone at 30 percent and it lasted four hours of straight playing around with until it hit 10 percent and I put it on a charger. My nexus one would have died with a full charge by then(original battery).
I'll see how it goes in a week, battery life takes a bit to figure out.
Remember that break-in period for batteries when you buy a new phone. Maybe after about a week it will get better? Also maybe try that battery calibrating trick...

Well considering there's no way to know it's at 75% lol it could be at 70% or 79%...either way it would show 70%. The battery only displays at 10% updates.
You can also set up custom battery saver modes in the settings>battery save(think that's it)

Mine has also done extremely well, especially considering it's day one. I've toyed with it all day playing games, music and YouTube along with browsing and playing flash video. It's been outstanding so far.
Battery gauge lies. But it's normal (kind of). See here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...bump-charging-and-inconsistent-battery-drain/
I've not been able to drain this thing since I got it a week and a half ago. I have to say that I like to charge things over night. I've not been able to get the Photon below 40% before I go to bed each night.
I hear that you need to drain it full at least once but my habit of charging things overnight is getting in the way. Should I just let it go overnight one night?
I was under the impression that completely draining Lithium Ion batteries causes more harm than good.
"The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery."
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
Also, i'm sitting at 46% after 15 hours of normal (for me) use. not to shabby. I should mention i'm running Juice Defender and build 4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_5 from the dev. forums and i'm connected to WiFi 90% of the time.
going to try tomorrow without Juice Defender and see how it does. After that i'm going to disable SPB Shell and see if that makes a difference.
Thank you sir. I don't want to root my phone so don't run Juice Defender but I do use the Data Saver in stock a lot. I usually just listen to a lot of music and look for new stuff on FB, check XDA forums blah blah blah, yada yada yada...
I'll not feel paranoid about charging my phone now lol.
Now with my tablet (Acer Iconia A500) I did root and load a bunch of different stuff. This is my first cell phone though and I didn't want to mess with something that I have to pay a monthly charge for. I know I could but it's my first cell phone lol.
How much are you guys using it? For me, I use about 30min talking, 1 hr heavy wifi use, 1 hr light wifi use (reading), 30 minutes playing with settings, and the rest of the day idle...that gets me to about 30%.
I actually thought that is kind of weak. Maybe my battery isn't as healthy as yours? I've only had it for 5 days. I charge it every night.
I use it for about 7 to 8 hours of music, FB updates/posting, checking XDA, about 10 minutes of calls and so far some Netflix watching just to show off the phone to my peeps. Oh and some picture taking.
I am the same way I hate to discharge it completely and its been very hard. I've went a day and a half without charging before it went under 10%. I will say that I am on Wifi 90% of the time as I have wifi at work and at home other than that its on performance mode so no true bells and whistles. I'm thoroughly impressed coming from the Evo.

Average day for me is about 30 to 45 minutes of phone calls, 80 to 100 texts, few conversations on google talk, 30 or so emails on three accounts and i have trillian running connected to two accounts.
Connected to WiFi most of the time, bluetooth is turned on (not connected most the time) and brightness set to Auto.
I really dont see how this phone is a monster when it comes to battery life, I've actually been getting the exact opposite. I just fully charged my phone and after running for 2hrs and 7mins its down 78%.... This phone has yet to last me for the whole day. What am i doing wrong? I dont have tons of widgets and the only app that im running that might pose a problem is Go Launcher

For the past couple of weeks I've been swapping batteries with an external charger one to two times during the course of a day (plus the overnight charge)... Looks like it's time to do some housekeeping...
Edit: used to have battery life like everyone else in this thread though! While at the climbing gym last night I noticed that the thing felt like it was about to catch fire against my thigh - it had burned through about 60 percent of a freshly charged battery in about two hours. I have a nagging suspicion that I neglected to uninstall something (or a few things), and now something non-existent is constantly being polled for as a service after I launch some app for the first time...
when i got my phone it did great on a full day charge, but now with it just sitting at the office its at 70% by 11am i take it off the charger 7-8am .. it started to "weaken" after i downloaded a ton of apps i leave wifi on and 4g off but it also depends on your signal strenght at home it will kill the phone halfway thru the day because i have one bar
So I've had it since November 8th, that was a while ago... and I've been at work today and lightly texting, using gochat fb from time to time, reading RSS, calendar, minimal brightness, hspa+, and after 8 hours my batteries at like 15%, does this seem like normal usage/battery drainage to anyone? I'm at work so ill extend on this a little more later, but people were saying you should see battery improvements after a week or two ..

There's a lot of factors that go into battery life it might be the Facebook chat constantly using data and killing the battery it might be other things...I would recommend juice defender beta it really helps me out. I usually just keep my phone on 3g unless I really need the speed and that helps tremendously. I'm going on 14 hours with more use than you've described above with 29% battery left.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
With the usage described, by the time I was getting to the end of the thread I thought you would mention you had 15% after 5-6 hours.
I am not sure what phones you have had in the past and if they were Android phones, but what you just described is GREAT battery life.
Take into consideration these things:
1. 3G
2. Screen on
3. Phone not sleeping because of chat
4. Huge screen
5. Fast CPU
Did you really expect battery life to be the same on this as on your Nokia 6310i almost 10 years ago?
Now regularly getting just over 48 hours between charges (this morning I've still go 20% left in the tank)..
..3g off, but wifi on during daytime (with background sync for email, weather, uknews widget, xbox live stats widget etc), a few calls here and there (inc using speakerphone) moderate texting... using 3g when away from home e.g. commuting to work a couple of days a week.. regularly checking fb etc.. smart action to disable wifi, 3g and background sync over night but that's about it..
pretty..
damn..
awesome!!!
I guess you're right, I do expect too much usage from the phones these days it seems.. anyway, lightly (read: barely) using the phone today, 6 hrs usage so far and its kicking at 70% still, not bad.. I also installed JuiceDefender (sounds like a condom brand lol) so that seems like its helping I think, ill start setting up my smart actions and stuff too.
Even with my brightness all the way down it seems like its using a whopping 46% of the battery, jeeeesus
I also do feel like my smartphone is my primary device these days, I mean, I don't even use the desktop I just bought.. gonna sell it and get an HDTV + HD station + wireless keyboard w/ touch pad.. and I will be set!
Sent from my XT910 using XDA App
Don't know if this helps but I've now been listening to music for 6 hours straight and still have 40% battery left, that's checking 5 mail accounts every hour, going on book face and 2 google accounts. The battery rocks

My battery on my Razr is excellent
Ok I'm here to tell ya z battery on this here Razr is fine. I spent 4 hours on the golf course with the screen and gps on the whole time with my SkyDroid golf range finder app, had several calls and even surf the web a few times while waiting to hit my next shot and I only lost 32% on my battery. I can go 24 hours easily with heavy use.
Now I'm rooted...use Battery Calibration and AutoKiller Memory Optimizer and I'm golden. Both those apps need Superuser Permission so you have to be rooted and maybe I'm just lucky but I'm pleased with the battery life so far. Now ask me in a year after 300+ battery charges and maybe it will different as I'm not a big fan of non-replaceable batteries. I do like my Razr however.
Good Luck
I was getting terrible battery life when I first got the phone. Did 3-4 battery cycles (let the phone die completely, charge to 100%, use phone and let battery die completely, rinse, repeat) and my battery life has improved dramatically.

I pull mine off the charger at 7:00 and at 3pm or so it's down to 85%, I'll put it on the charger at work until I leave around 5-6pm (mainly because I'm used to having to do this on my previous phone) and at night if I'm not using it constantly it's around 70-75% when I plug it in at bed time.
I suspect anyone getting that bad of battery life must be using it constantly, ie: Playing games, browsing, trolling facebook, etc.. Even in the "new toy" stage I'm getting great battery life.
FYI I don't have LTE, but do generally have good 4G.
You honestly can't use any phone on GPS without external power and expect that you're not going to discharge quickly. Assuming that you are running a car charger during GPS and just didn't say so, search the i-717 threads, since the topic has been well vetted on what chargers are more effective, etc. There are definite differences.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note LTE™
The fact that there are people out there that get really good battery life means the problem is you and not the phone. If you refresh facebook every minute of course your battery life will be crappy. apps like juicedefender are just marketing crap. as long as there are no running apps in the background that eat your battery, you do not need any juicedefender or tasker. also setting screen-off behavior to conservative on set cpu helps improve battery life.
When I first got my i717 and was using it on the stock rom I had pretty terrible battery life. I take it off the charger at 5:00am and had decent battery life (around 5 to 7 hours without GPS) but I use my phone a lot for internet/email. I think your battery life is completely normal given your usage.
Most people get about 5hrs screen on time. Total on battery ranges up to about 24hrs, but only if the screen is off at least 19 of them.

i can get about 3 or so
5 hours of screen time AND 19hours standby sounds incredible
would sure like to see screen shot as well
and def dont think 5 hours is any type of avg
I had GPS running on my phone for 4 hours today, had blue tooth on half the time without knowing it, sending text messages, making two 5 min phone calls, checking maps, checking FML and reading a book for about an hour and drained down to about 70% and I have the brightness set at auto. I would exchange it for a new battery.
On average with several texts per hour, several 5-10 min phone calls, taking a few pics and uploading them to picasa, checking facebook, updating status and checking emails I can pull off the charger at 630am and still have 50% battery (at least) by 630pm.
I do have the juicedefender (which isn't crap, it turns off signal after so long so you aren't trolling for signals when you aren't on the phone).

Was thinking of doing that since they're so cheap but thanks to juice defense I don't really have that issue no more.

I had a ss of my buddies yesterday, but can't restore mms lol. There are plenty of other ss in the note section. He was at 22+ hrs with about 4:30 of screen on and some % remaining. I have to charge around 7-9 everynight at 4-4:30 hrs screen on, but my use is pretty heavy. I sync 4 gmail accounts, a separate GV, 3 calendars, and several apps.
If yours is much worse than that, you likely have a few troublesome apps or are playing games. First, after a full charge, reset cpuspy timers, lock it, and set it down for a few hours (I know, impossible). Then check to see that your CPU has been in deep sleep about 95% of the time. If not, use better battery stats to see what has been request wakelocks. Not only the most total time, but the total number. Any app that looks outrageous, freeze it or uninstall it. For system processes that look troublesome, Google. You can often find simple tricks online that will tell you what's causing them to go crazy. Beyond that, turn off syncing of anything that isn't needed or doesn't matter (like Facebook), and uninstall stuff you never use.
Another slight help is the brightness widget (don't use the actual widget, just put the app on your homescreen, it works the same) or dimmer in market as they can both set the brightness to a value of 10 (Samsung lowest stock is 20), and even if you can't tell the difference, it helps. Jkay settings in saurom can set the auto brightness profile slightly darker than stock. Umm, and the obvious, use less Widgets, longer sync intervals, processor scaling and speed profiles, and buy a couple rapid chargers, wall and auto.
A couple things to note after seeing a few of these posts...
BT can be on, but without it searching, connected, or listening it's not active.
GPS isn't active unless its in use aand you see the icon in the notification bar. That being said, fb, websites, and many other apps that request location will activate it.

YOU MUST CALIBERATE THE BATTERY!! I have no issues I use my phone heavy all day and get 15 hours and I still have 20% left. All you have to do is
1) Charge you phone until it says "charged"
2)Leave phone plugged in and power off and let it charge until the battery meter literally says "100" (screen will sleep so you can check with volume rocker to light screen)
3) power on phone and let boot and than power off and wait till you see 100% again
4) now keep doin this and you will notice it will start displaying "100%" faster and faster usually takes 6-7 times cycling like this
5) After you do this download Battery Caliberation (root required) app from market and hit the caliberate button and boom your good to go
I do this on every android phone I own when I flash a new rom or purchase a fresh one. Everyone should do this everytime you flash a new rom and I can CONFIRM significant battery longevity on all my android phones I have done this with
You only have to do it once so just get it out the way and you'll get through a whole dayand have some juice to play with.
I get 15+ hours and do not any battery juice defender apps

The fact that there are people out there that get really good battery life means the problem is you and not the phone. If you refresh facebook every minute of course your battery life will be crappy. apps like juicedefender are just marketing crap. as long as there are no running apps in the background that eat your battery, you do not need any juicedefender or tasker. also setting screen-off behavior to conservative on set cpu helps improve battery life.

Just to be clear here, Tasker has nothing to do with battery life. It doesn't hurt it, nor "help" it. However, you certainly could write tasks/contexts that would decrease battery life, and there are a few scripts out there which do silly stuff like autokilling, etc... But if we're talking "battery savings", Tasker and JD do not go in the same category.
IMO JD is only useful if you're frequently in an area with no signal, like you work in a basement or deep inside of a solidly constructed building. Since you mentioned Tasker, in this context it does help me a bit on battery because my wifi turns off when I leave the house, but that's also something JD can help with. If you don't have a wifi connection it'll turn off wifi (and I believe turn it back on periodically to see if there's one available?) I don't use JD, so can't speak too much for it.

Hour? Hour and a half? I'm working during that period. I usually hit news sites and G+ when I'm first at my desk in the morning, so that's 30 minutes or so off and on looking at it, then perhaps an hour over the rest of the day, sometimes more at lunch.
I'll look closer today and post back.

Long story short, I bought the HTC EVO 4G LTE (The US carrier, Sprint's variant on the HTC One X). Sprint has a 14 day return policy. For me, it ends on Saturday. I'm considering the GSIII.
But the most important thing is, how's the battery life? How well does it do when you're using 3G?
But most importantly, how badly does heavy texting (as in, new text messages every minute for about 4 hours) effect the battery?
I text all day long from 8am to 8pm (medical school ) and WhatsApp/xda app. Lasts the whole day. But I run in edgge not 3g

I'm in the same boat as you. I love the screen on the Evo but the battery life and multitasking issues have got me strongly considering the GS3.
I've been haunting the forums here and it seems like people are getting amazing battery life. There are many people posting screenshots of 5-6 hours screen on time. I've even seen some that exceed that. By contrast my Evo has been running 3.5-4 hours. That's less than what I was getting on my OG Evo (of course it was rooted and running a custom ROM/kernel ).
I just went and spoke with my Sprint representative about what I'd need to do to make the exchange. I'm 95% sure I'm going to pull the trigger on this switcharoo.
Best of luck in your decision!
Was quite bad at first, but something changed.. now it's awesome. 15 hours and 70% left. Moderate usage and 3G/HSPA+
Do you know what changed to your phone?? 15 hours with 70% left is amazing How often were you using the phone ?
The battery life is fantastic. Just turn off the crappy S-Voice features that wait for your voice input.
How long is the screen-on time? I seriously doubt texting requires heavy usage of the radio. So, the screen is obviously going to be the biggest drain on the battery.
Battery life is misleading straight out of the box. The starting charge is completely out of sync with the phone.
I had to run my battery dry and full charge it to calibrate the battery properly. Once I did, then battery% values balanced out and phone has been a dream ever since.

it was with moderate usage (lots of texts, a few calls, a bit of game play, but not much) and I turned on power saving when I wasn't using the phone(don't know whether this actually does anything when the phone is asleep anyway... and off when I was). Don't have s-voice running (disabled it manage applications menu), turned off motion as I never used it, turned off NFC, S-Beam and Wifi-Direct (some of which were turned on by default! and this is SUCH a battery killer)...
Basically turned off everything that I don't use.. and saved a hell of a lot of juice.

I think the longest I got was almost 30 hours, thats using whatsapp, heywire, facebook and skype here and there and tinkering around in the marketplace. I had most of the settings switched off as you did...just noticed I had nfc on...switched that off too now. I just joined the android community, switched over from my Iphone this week when I got the SG3 so im still getting used to it
I think because of the quad procesor the 2.100mah wasent enough. It is very good! All day from the morning with 100% with full brightness, wifi, download gameloft games, gps, and i had 20% the next morning!!With custom roms will improved more!!

24 hours gets me to about 20%. That's with WiFi on all the time. Pretty good yea?
Almost 24 hours with heavy usage, on my previous S II it took two charges or extra battery for same (smsing, surfing, calling, half of time on wifi etc...) always on 3g
There's a whole thread on battery life here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1681873

I will agree with the above statements. I use the 2x battery app and I have moderate daily use which gets me at the end of the day around 10:30 from 8am to around 45-48%. That is with 3g when the screen is unlocked a bit of wifi, web browsing and tapatalk, a phone call or 2 etc. I have disabled all apps i don't use as well and run the stock kernel and no roots

I managed to get the 99% battery issue sorted!
I have used he external battery charger on my 2nd battery and today I thought of trying the new battery for the first time to get some cycles on. Guess what?
The samsung desktop charger powers the battery all the way. I have now 100% on the new one and it dropped as I'm typing now after a good 5minutes of operation, unlike it used to do which was immediatelly after unplugging the charger from the phone.
So I presume that goes with the original assumption that the phone does not overcharge the battery for lifespan purposes. Why would the desktop charger would though?

I'm now giving this method a try.
Charging up my spare battery with the Samsung desk stand/charger.
---------- Post added at 09:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 AM ----------
Interesting.
I've found the same as above with the 99% issue.
Having charged my spare battery up in the phone, I've then put it in the external charger, which after another 10-15 minutes charge, the LED turned from red to green.
Having now put that battery back into the phone, the battery is still on 100% after being unplugged for more than 30 mins.
Usually, the battery would have dropped to either 99% or 98% as soon as it was unplugged.
So, it would seem that the desktop charger does charge the battery up to the full capacity, while the phone itself, seems to stop at 97-98%. Weird.
