I probably know this may be a hardware issue, but wondering if anyone has found a remedy--did a search and cannot seem to find if anyone is experiencing the same problem(s).
Bought used SGS2 that had Cognition 1.6 on it, Flashed Checkrom HD, Flashed back to stock JI3 w/ new bootloader and left un-rooted.
-Screen turns on after screen timeout (15 seconds or 30 seconds)
-Changed to pin unlock--same thing--turns on and remains on
-Screen won't go black/back to screen timeout
-If i push the power button, screen turns off, then after about 20 seconds or so, screen turns back on and stays on
All reboots remain the same, pulled battery, remains the same--screen comes back on. Completely drains the battery
Any ideas? ????
I'm afraid i don't have a warranty and i've already tried contacting this pitiful seller...

Update: 12/1/11
- Replaced USB Flex cable purchased from ebay, but it was version 2.1 instead of 2.2 that i replaced
- Issues of screen randomly staying on is for the most part, gone, except i've woken up to the screen being on a couple times w/ a text message (and screen stayed on)
- Cannot connect to USB via download mode anymore
- Cannot connect to PC (states unrecognized)
- I get random "Back button" presses while using an App or the browser--sometimes multiple times where it goes back to the home screen
- Charging is slow and only reporting "Charging USB"
- Purchased another one from a different Ebay supplier--hopefully, it's version 2.2

Update: 12/12/11
- Replaced with 2.2 revision flex cable from ebay seller yqmama
- Cleaned flex cable connections on main PCB with electronics cleaner
- Charging is now saying AC when plugged in
- Download mode and Recovery via USB work flawlessly
- No other problems seem to be apparent, except the back button went crazy once since replacement
- Seems that the phone is now ready for daily use
My guess would be a rogue app causing it. Have you checked what's waking the phone? Something like BetterBatteryStats should be able to help you pinpoint it, if that is indeed the cause.
If that's not it, at any point have you tried factory resetting the phone?
If you're using JuiceDefender, make very sure you disable the timeout function. It's known to turn on screen by itself.

I literally have no apps installed after i did a factory reset, and i formatted usb storage. I can try betterbatterystats, but i feel like i'm almost at a loss.
Update:
-Installed CM7 nightlies and random screen turning off and on went away, but new problem--capacitive buttons would not work
-Installed CheckRom 3.3.1 and all was going fine 11/15/11
-Installed apps (didn't use TiBackup) from market
-Installed theme from KitchenPro (ICS Domination)
-Added widgets from homescreen (added SamsungWeatherClock--i.e. accuweather)
-Went home, connected via Wifi
-Saw screen turn off and on several times
-Used Watchdog--came up with Event/O and Suspend as acting up
Are these what is causing my screen to wake and stay on sometimes??
updated 1st post w/ findings thus far after replacing USB Flex cable (charge port)
Have a very similar problem as you describe with a water damaged Galaxy S2. I replaced the USB flex cable and it solved the problem I was having with the phone refusing to stay off. However, the screen will not turn off, when I briefly press the power to turn the screen off, it goes off for a second and then it turns back on. I am going to be replacing the home button flex cable when the part arrives. When I open it up to do that, I will be cleaning more parts in hopes I can solve the screen-no-stay-off problem that I'm having.
****UPDATE.
Used a bit more contact cleaner on some of the areas I had overlooked, put it back together and the screen's behaving nicely.

I can't remember which rom I'm on (probably the one in my signature, can't remember if I updated it since then lol), but I've been having this issue for a little while now, but sometimes (can't quite figure out what triggers it) I lock my phone and my screen won't turn back on when I hit the lock/power button to turn it back on. Also sometimes I go to lock my phone and the screen will turn off then immediately back on, showing the lock screen. I love everything about the rom except this bug. I don't want to have to pull the battery constantly and it's getting very annoying. I do know I'm on 3.6, but can't remember which rom I'm on. Please help!
Flash different rom? If it sticks on another rom, it's a hardware issue, and you should get it replaced by Verizon
I had this same exact problem I posted about a while back. I linked it to my use of turboprop. Everytime i hit the on button the backlight would turn on but the ui would never come up. Reflash your rom and not turbo after a good wipe. my problem got fixed.
I just did a full factory reset of my stock rom and finished restoring my apps but for some reason the screen won't turn off when I leave the device alone.
Screen timeout is set to 30 seconds but no matter what I set it to, the device never ever sleeps. Also if I press the lock button sometimes the device will wake itself and and the screen will come back on permanently... I've looked in the process manager and nothing is running in the foreground.
Here is a logcat. Can anyone make sense of it?
I have no idea why this is happening after a fresh wipe on a stock rom.
Just try this.
Go to settting --> Display --> Touch key light duration --> Change "Always on" to either 1.5 seconds or 6 seconds (as per your choice)
If it works just HIT thanks button.
The touch key light duration has nothing to do with why my screen won't turn off...
Thanks anyway..
Do you have any alarms set?
EDIT: in developer options do you have stay awake set on? Also if your not plugged into USB maybe you should try and clean the USB port.

Hey thanks for the reply. No I have no alarms on, the USB port is very clean and I don't have that option in my 'Developer Options'. :/ I really would like to know what is going on...

Hi leijonasisu,
My samsung has just developed the same problem whereby the screen won't turn off ever. It happened since the battery went completely flat two days ago. I'd love to know whether you found a solution to the problem, because it is draining the battery at an insane rate!
thanks.

Hey! Little bit of help please !
Hello everyone, im new to this place but as far as I could read my cellphone having the exact same symptoms as the threadstarted stated.
I do have the "Developer options" tab and also I would like to add another symptom.. After the phone is fully charged, the green icon at the top-left corner of the screen wont dissapear after I disconnect the usb cable.
- I do not have the "stay awake" settled on.
- I do have multiple alarms but just at some exact point each morning.
- The only way I can shut the screen down is by pressing the lock button.
- I'm running 4.1.2 as the android version.
- My model is the GT-I9100
Is there any other thing you guys would need to know ? thanks in advance for the possible help provided.
Flash a stock firmware via odin.
Then all will back to default.the same look when you bought it.
Or flash a custom rom with device option in settings.you can controll the screen behavior there.

Root your phone and flash a custom roms.
You'll find one at the dev section.
Dont like the custom rom and stay on stock?
Do a factory reset.
Settings - Storage - Erase all data
This will erase your user data and downloaded apps.So do it at your own risk.
Goodluck

I just had the problem on my Mega, where the Power Button would bring up the Power Menu on a long tap, but would not turn the screen off when I just pressed it quick, like it used to. Nor would the screen shut off with the Screen Timeout set either.
When it started this problem, I also noticed that the solid white screen that would appear during part of the bootup no longer appeared.
This got me to thinking. I'm Rooted on the Factory v4.2.2 ROM, so I installed "XBlast" and went into it and checked the box for Disabling the Boot Animation (SU should prompt you).
Anyway, I rebooted and the problem was gone! I can turn the screen on and off with my Power Button again!
This all started with yesterday's Google+ update making my system go haywire! I had to restore from a previous NanDroid backup, but this one issue remained. The Bootup Animation must have got messed up somehow and affected it and disabling it stopped it from interfering or something.
This helped me and I can deal with having a way cool boot animation later if I want. But at least my phone's screen turns off now and maybe it'll help you too.
Solution!!!
This problem is usually caused by the usb charging port, which is why a factory reset doesn't fix it. It's a hardware problem not a software problem.
1.
First thing to try is cleaning the usb port with a small dental bursh (or whatever you can find) and some surgical spirit which you can find in a pharmacy,
Take the battery out and unplug the phone when you do this.
2.
If that doesn't work then you can try the method that worked for me. Full disclosure: I invented this through trial and error, I don't know why this works and I can't guarantee you won't damage the usb port. But if nothing else works, then I say go for it.
For this method leave the battery inside, have the phone on.
Okay, so the port is a hole with a prong in the middle, right. Get a sewing needle and insert it into the space between the prong and the hole, specifically the place where the prong is closest to the hole wall - all right? The prong should be much closer to one of the walls than the other walls, put it down there, it won't fit unless you force it a little bit.
Put it in as far as it will go, then leave it for a little while. Turn the screen on and wait, see if the screen turns off. For me it usually works after five minutes of having the needle inside. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY
Hi everyone !
I'm new here (and not a native english speaker, so apologies in advance for any grammar mistakes)
Before making this thread, I looked for info here, but I'm not sure for what to search.
I'll try to explain my problem here.
I bought a Galaxy SIII from my provider 3 weeks ago and everything looked fine, till last week.
Some times to time, with no apparent reason or cause, while my phone is on sleep mode, on my desk, or in my pocket, playing music, I have the following problem: when I push the on/off button to wake up my phone, my screen is turning on, taking me to the lock screen.
But, my screen brightness is very low, like set to the minimum.
And when I draw my unlocking pattern, screen goes black.
Bottom buttons are lit and my phone seems to be OK, I can feel haptic feedbacks.
But the screen is black.
If I push the on/off button again, screen stays black and bottom buttons are not lit anymore, as a usual Sleep Mode.
If I push on/off again (depending on how much I wait between 2 on/off):
- My phone awakes from Sleep and takes me again to the unlock screen, brightness still very low. And after the unlocking pattern traced, black screen again
- If I didn't wait enought after putting it into sleep mode, in this case, I don't have to redraw the unlocking pattern. I'm back to my home screen...
for 1/4 of a second, stilll with brightness at the minimum. And screen goes black.
And after a serie on onoffonoff, boom, my screen is back to full and normal brightness and everything is OK.
At the beginning, my phone did that once in a while. I thought at the time ti was after pushing the on/off button while using a CPU/RAM hungry app, my phone struggling to recover....
But now, it's totally random.
Depending on .... I don't know what, I have to do the onoffonoff thing 2, 5, 10, 50 times in a row so my phone can recover from is half comatose.
Yesterday, I could not use my phone for half an hour ...
and if someone calls me, I hear the ringtone, but screen stays black.
I can answer the call (but not knowing who's calling) by sliding on the part of the screen where the slider normally is.
Funny thing is about removing the battery. It doesn't solve my problem.
When I do so, my phone boots, I see the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" boot screen, on low brightness (whih is not normal ...)
After that, I normally have another boot screen with my provider's logo and tone. But screen goes black again (but I still here the tone)
Then I realized it started to happen when my phone proposed me a Samsung update.
I tried to reset my phone to factory settings but it didn't work, the update was still here.
For a while I thought my problem was solved, because my phone behaved normally for 3 or 4 hours, without problem.
But it came back.
I found on the internet several "almost-same-problems" without proposed solutions.
Like checking if the proximity sensor was blocked by a protective transparent plastic sheet, or a case.
I tried to to remove mine.
Didn't work.
Some people said it was linked to their phone trying to acquire a wifi network.
My wifi on or off, withiin or without the range of a wifi router didn't work ...
I tried to note things down about what I did, when, how, app launched before the problem appears.
I checked battery info (temp, voltage, etc).
No pattern emerged.
So.
Hs anyone of you enountered the same problem ?
Do you have ideas, solutions I can use ?
Or maybe a voodoo prayer ?
I could sent it back to my provider which will bounce it back to Samsung. But it will take ages (3 to 4 weeks ...) :'(
Thanks in advance !
do a factory reset, go completely stock
if that doesn't help, send it in

That's what I did.
I tried by going into the Parameters menu, and reseting.
I tried by booting my phone with Vol+ / Home / Power buttons to access a console mode and do a wipe data/reset.
The problem is that my phone got an update like one week ago from a 4.?.? to 4.1.2.
And even with a reset, my phone reboot with the 4.1.2 version, which seems to cause this problem.
Or maybe not, but I can't be sure.
As I said, after a factory reset I did yesterday, everything went well for 3 or 4 hours and the problem reappeared.
send it to the service
I've been experiencing for some time now some random freezes when trying to face-unlock the phone. When pushing the power button to wake the phone, it displays the unlock screen but the box in the screen where your face (or whatever the front camera catches) blacks out, while the rest of the screen is normal (I can see the clock, the notification bar and the emergency call), also the leds for back and menu light up. And the phone justs stays like that, all the leds lighted up and the screen on. The home button doesn't work and the power button only works if I hold it down (it powers down / restarts the phone).
This has happened to my phone from some time ago, its purely random and it always happens when I try to unlock the phone. I haven't had any issues while using the phone nor strange bootloops or sudden reboots. I'm currently on stock XXEMB5 with Speedmod Kernel k2-13 and some apps removed, mainly yahoo widgets and some Samsung apps (I think I just removed all the hubs: game hub, social hub, etc...).
I red the bad eMMs symptoms, but it doesn't seem to be the same. If I had to guess, I would say its something with the camera, but right now I don't know for sure... Anyone has any idea where could be the problem?
Favourite culprit would be a non-standard kernel, wipe the phone and return to fully stock to test.
Your collection of mods and custom changes to rom are probably unique, if it doesn't freeze when stock then add changes one at a time until it happens again.
For a week or two now,* I have been having some funny things happen with my Redmi Note 4 (Qualcomm, Global) phone.
Before that it had gotten water in it and basically shut down entirely, but they fixed it and got it up and running. When I picked it up they showed me watermarks on the screen, saying that the screen had frozen only once but that it may just be lagging.
Since then I have had a few symptoms of an issues, perhaps hardware issues, but potentially something that I can fix without paying more for parts.
Here are the things that happen:
- Music stops suddenly (screen on or off) and the music app has to be reopened (DoubleTwist, Miuiu's Music app, etc); Somes while in Doubletwist, if I click to visit home screen (square button) than the music stops. (this is the first issue that I noticed).
- 1-2 seconds of white screen before already-open apps appear after selected; Sometimes problems with apps loading or screen goes black when loading
- When closing apps or returning to home screen, it looks like the desktop(?) background comes up and then a second after is is re-populated with icons as if system is refreshing the home screen
- Once any of these issues begins, it usually worsens and the cell phone gets slower, behaving more and more strangely until not even useful to me; Reboot clears it right up for an hour or two or whenever this wierd stuff starts to happen again
-It seems like if I make a point of using the phone modestly, slowly, I can avoid these issues from starting up
- Sometimes reboot rometimes hangs on initial black loading screen
- Sometimes if I hit the power button to turn off the display, I can not turn it back on with that button (neither does the battery-dead orange light flash), so I have to reboot.
-When I turn the phone screen off while it has been working fine, I come back later, turn on the screen to find that it is now on the boot logo screen and it stays until I hard-reset the phone.
So, these are potential issues I have guessed at:
* Screen damaged? So far, other than watermarking at the top and some backlight bleed, sensistivity is perfect on the phone, and symptoms involving screen always seem to be triggered more by apps or pressing buttons.
* Apps or Android corrupted/internal memory damaged? I backed up via Settings and did a Hard/Factory Reset, then restored from backup. I still have the problems.
* RAM partially damaged? I test RAM with two apps and none of them showed issues. Namely my available RAM and used RAM reported always add up to the 4GB my phone has.
*Other Hardware Components failing? I used 3 apps to check all of the hardware devices and sensors that I could think of. Vibration is the only thing that does not work, and honestly, I don't care much about vibration.
Today I have suspected that settings may being at fault, and/or battery savers turning off my audio. Battery savers often identify my music apps as using "excessive amounts of power," perhaps because the speakers at involved, but it does make me think... I removed any battery-related and security apps, then turned off all battery saver options in settings earlier today. In 2 hours of music listening after that, I have not had any shutdowns, but I am not convinced I have solved the problems. In the weeks after this, the issue is back and the audio issue is always followed by the phone operating very sluggishly.
I have done a factory reset and restore, and the issue persists. Do you think there's any point in trying to do a clean reflashing of MIUI? Could it be a software issue or definitely hardware?
What advice can you give me?
Thank you for reading.
You can try booting in safe mode and then check if the problems still persist. Other than that, I suggest you to get advice from senior members of the forum.
