[Q] Root without Revolutionary? - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

So, using Revolutionary alters your bootloader and so you can no longer receive OTA updates that check that your HBOOT (bootloader) is unmodified. This is pretty much all OTA updates, so you can't recieve OTA at all, save by flashing an uploaded image.
I'd like to receive OTA updates (especially with Honeycomb on the horizon), but I'd also like to root my Flyer. Is this possible? Via installing CWM through HTCDev.com bootloader unlock, maybe? Or does that break OTA updates too?
The HTCDev.com unlock leaves you with S-On, apparently.

Completely incorrect
All that is required is that you reflash the stock revcovery once you have installed the su zip file.

Sorry for the dumb question... but stock recovery?
So flashing again once you have rooted, you will keep root and the updates will be ok?

Stock recovery = the one from an RUU or OTA.
Yes, in theory at least. If you ever did get su disabled by an OTA, reflash cwm, reflash su.zip, reflash stock recovery again.

well i just purchased my view today and im trying to root it. where can i find the files and instructions?

In the development forum, the sticky right at the top of the page.

[CONFIRMED] Root after OTA

Just wanted to let you guys know that I still have root after I installed the OTA. I will give a few steps what I did in a few minutes.
These are the steps I used. Took a while (seemed like forever) but at least I am updated and with root. I originally came from an ICS rom then I had to flash a stock rom then RUU.
1. Flashed stock recovery (Link below)
2. Locked bootloader (fastboot oem lock)
3. Flashed RUU 1.02.605.6 (link below)
4. Installed OTA (check for new software updates when booted)
5. Unlocked bootloader (http://www.htcdev.com/)
6. Flashed RA recovery (found in forum)
7. Installed su and superuser under Developer menu under RA recovery
8. BAM!!!!!!!
The RUU I used was found at http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=37
Thanks scrosler for having that available!
The stock recovery can be downloaded at http://db.tt/tw5m33ZG. Unzip and flash in Fastboot using command "fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img"
Can you post a link to the RUU and stock recovery you used ? Thanks.

I put very general commands and info beside the steps in the first post. PM me if you have any questions.
So does it seem like it's worth it? How's reception and call quality with the new radios?
What radio versions does your phone list now?
I just rooted. I still have my original stock ruu. It's rooted though. Could I update with that or do I have to unroot?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
If it lets you update then go for it. Just make sure your bootloader is unlocked after the update then install su and superuser and you got root back basically.
So if I just uninstall su I can update? I have amon ra as my recovery. What about that??

You would need the stock recovery. RA would cause it to fail.

It won't work because (I'm assuming) that his mainver was updated. AFAIK the RUU won't run a "newer" mainver.

[Q] Why did my phone just reboot into recovery and start updated?

err, start updatING.. English is my first language, I swear..
Does Amon Ra auto-update itself? My phone just randomly rebooted into recovery, and did the following (hand-typed, forgive the typos..)
finding update package
opening update package
installing update
copying fotaBoot to /data/system for customize reload
verifying current system
deleting specific files
removing unneeded files
patching system files
unpacking new files
symlinks and permissions
and now I'm back at the Amon Ra recovery window..
guess I'll reboot and see what explodes.
Sounds like you just got the OTA. It's not supposed to be able to flash via AmonRa ...
damnit.. just lost root.. PITA.

oh well.. root is back, all is well.. strange stuff.
Looks you got updated except for the radios, since you were still locked.
Also, if you have Amon Ra you can always get root back by installing su in its developer menu.

It will flash. It doesn't care what recovery, it just cares about the files it is going to update.

I've seen people talking about it here that where just stock rooted with amon ra as recovery and it went through. Mine didn't since I had some bloat frozen.

The OP had Amon Ra and the OTA installed. However, looks like the radios didn't update. Whether that was due to Amon Ra or the fact that the phone was unlocked I don't know.
Unless the update did something, or somehow it got re-locked without me doing it, the phone was unlocked. I unlocked it less than 5 minutes after I unboxed it from VZW.

I apologize for reviving this topic, but in the exact situation here: unlocked & flashed AmonRa 3.15 on my stock Rezound.
OTA applied through AmonRa, radios did not update, and root was removed.
I'm stumped on what I need to do next. How would I update the radios? What's needed to re-root?
Thanks!

Re-do the steps you followed to root it again if you are running the stock rom, my guess is you got the GB patch, not something newer, therefore your radios wouldn't be updated I believe.

Rerooted just fine using the SuperSU.zip from the All-In-One Kit.

Rezound OTA or ICS Sense ROM?

I was going to install an ICS Sense ROM on my Rezound, but i just got a message that the OTA is downloading.
I'm rooted. I'm going to do S-Off soon as I can.
Should I get S-Off before installing the OTA?
Will the OTA break root?
Will the OTA break S-Off?
Are there advantages to using an ICS Sense ROM instead of the OTA? Vice versa?
Thanks!
I would s-off before you accept ota. It will not effect s-off. Installing an ics Rom wild give you better performance as well as better battery life
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I was in your exact position so I can help out here.
Note that before you accept the OTA you will need to flash the stock GB recovery, as that's how the OTA installs. Without it the OTA will fail. Also make sure you're 'locked' if you don't end up S-OFFing before the OTA. The S-OFF procedure automatically "locks" your bootloader even though you of course have full access.
I S-OFF'd before OTA just because the S-OFF method has been known to work with GB firmware. Others have reported the .5 ControlBear version on the unlimited.io website also works with the .22 OTA release so that's your call. IMO yes do it before, but it will likely work either way.
-Root will definitely break. Easy to fix: you just google Superuser and flash the latest ARM version.
-The OTA will not break S-OFF. HOWEVER, it will completely overwrite your "modded" hboot with its own secured version. To fix this, grab the ICS hboot from the unlimited.io website and flash it. This is necessary if you want to flash a custom recovery again.
-OTA advantages: support from VZW and probably *slightly* less bugs than a custom ROM. However you of course have to deal with the bloat. It's your call.
Ok, first step...
Where do I get the stock GB recovery?
And i guess i have to "flash" using my computer, not from within Amon?
So, all of the "flashing" you're talking about had to take place using my computer, not from within Amon?
Sorry I'm such a noob.
Anyone? I can't find the stock GB recovery for the Rezound... Anyone know where I can get it?
And do I flash it the same way I flashed AR recovery?

This is from a write up Scotty did a while back. It's worked for me in the past.
Rename to PH98IMG.zip and place on root of SD card and flash in hboot.
Or extract the recovery.img from that zip and flash in fastboot with the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Thanks!
And now to get root back once I install the ICS OTA...
Do I simply flash the latest Superuser the same way that I flashed the recovery? ie: Do I rename it PH98IMG.zip and flash it in hboot?
You guys are awesome...

It's right there as CWM SuperSU v0.94
Thanks... It's confusing because it says CWM in the name, but I suppose that really just means you can install it with a custom recovery, not necessarily CWM.
CWM really screwed up charging on my phone before, so I was leary of it.
Got it rooted and ready to go now. Thanks!

It sounds like you are rooted and S-ON. If you are S-OFF this OTA installation procedure would be a little different.
You can't install the OTA with a custom recovery like TWRP installed. It also patches the stock ROM so it's best to relock your bootloader and flash the RUU if you want to get apply OTA updates, then htcdev unlock, flash a custom recovery and root again.
The OTA update includes firmware that fixes connection and texting problems, and patches to the stock ROM.

Yes, you can use that thread through Step2 is you don't care about S-OFF, but that would make things a lot easier for you in the future. When you are S-OFF you can flash the RUU and do the OTA without unlocking the bootloader, then flash a custom hboot and recovery and you are back to where you want to be.
Make sure to download and install the OTA between Step1 and Step2 since once you flash a custom recovery it will not install properly.

Please let me know if you find out. I was wondering the same thing!
Let me try to help you guys.
What you guys need to do is to flash the original RUU for 1.27.531.11 from PC. Once you do that, you will be able to update OTA.
If you have unlocked bootloader and s-off, it will still carry over to the back to stock as well as OTA.
If you dont like it, just flash the older hboot and then recovery and another ROM.
I did it and works perfectly fine. Also no Root allow for Back to stock or OTA, you can do that later but not when trying to get update.
No custom recoveries, radio, boot, etc. Has to be stock ROM.
Ah, also please have sure the MID / CID is right before flashing to stock.

OK so just to clarify. I am currently on 1.27.531.11 rooted with a Unlocked S-off bootloader and TWRP recovery. All I need to do is, leave the bootloader unlocked and run the 1.27.531.11 RUU file. Once that is completed I can take the OTA to 4.3. Once this is complete will I still be S-Off and unlocked or S-off Locked? Then if I want to root (asuming bootloader is still unlocked) I would just need to flash the TWRP recovery and then flash SU, and I should then be updated to 4.3 rooted with a unlocked S-OFF bootloader. Is all of that correct? If not, please correct me before I attempt this. Thanks for any help.
