I am one of those unfortunate few that have a GPS that drifts a little when sitting still. The problem was much worse before the radio update, but it still exists. I was wondering... has anyone given consideration to testing the OG EVO GPS driver in the 3D? This concept seemed to be a huge discovery in the Epic world where they had a ****ty GPS that was fixed by using the captivate driver.
Anyone who could fix the GPS drift may be a huge hero!
I can't be the only one with the drifting GPS issue. Is anyone else experiencing this, and does anyone else like the idea of testing a different driver? Could someone tell me how to experiment with the OG evo driver?

No. Vibrant GPS is a software issue, but no GPS software released or leaked is guaranteed to fix anyone's problem. Search before posting.

I disagree, I would think if it was just a software issue either Samsung or the devs on here would of had a fix that works for everyone. But this is not the case in the many months the Vibrant has been out. I have a 4 year old non smart phone that had navigation that performs far better than my 2 vibrants with any GPS fix you can find. I know the devs have done some great things with leaked ROMs so I don't think they are to blame for a end all be all fix for the GPS, and well you'd hope samsung's programs knew what they were doing and well they can't seem to create a fix that works for everyone. So what's left hardware.

From what I can tell, this problem seems to be a combination of hardware and software related. I, like a few others, have better results when WiFi is turned off. This could be due to one of two reasons. First, it could be because the WiFi signal is interfering with the GPS signal. The reasons *why* this could happen are numerous, and would point to a H/W problem.
Regardless of whether it is a hardware problem or software related, a lot of problems can be reasonably addressed through software patches. I think we've seen that the JK and JL Modems actually do a better job with many people in term of improving the GPS performance. I am using the JL1 Modem with good, albeit not perfect, results. So, it appears that Samsung has addressed the problem (to the best of their ability) using software. I will add that the JL1 Modem also did wonders on improving my compass as well.
Hope this helps.

this is my thread, hope will help other guys that having the same problem like me.
I use my GPS all the time and I generally get a lock within 5 or 6 seconds when I am close to home and 10 - 20 when in the city. Not sure why the difference depending on location. I use it as the main GPS in my car, works great, better than my wifes crappy tom tom. Running Obsidian 4.2 no additional mods.
I hope S II is equipped with the most amazing gps chip.

If you get your hands on one...
..would you mind posting an indepth analysis of the gps (navigation etc while driving in cities-country without agps support) in sgs2? Rest of the flaws in sgs were all fixed by xda and it was a brilliant phone. It saddens me to see people with prototypes fixating on lag etc which is easily fixable. If there is confirmation of working gps on this it will be well worth waiting even until summer. Almost tempted to pull the trigger for nexus s as soon as it lands with att friendly 3g as the ip is suffocating me
have you done any reaading.. agps does nothing for driving around.. it is only used to get an initial fix quicker.

Alright, my point is about general gps use. Lets forget agps and if someone can please confirm a working gps in sgs2 it will be the best phone ever.
Wish it has a powerful GPS chip and does not ruin the chip with athena design.
wait about a month and see some video reviews on the internet thats all you can do now
if sgs2 has a good gps system in it, im ready to sell my sgs for sgs2
Sources tell me that it uses miniature homing pigeons to calculate latitude and longitude. Lock on is a brisk 3 days. Still better than original galaxy s.
Ok so whether stock or custom ROM, the GPS is slow to respond accurately to the location I am in. Sometimes it drifts, sometimes signal is lost completely.
Is there a fix for this? It seemed there was a GPS fix for the OG EVO.
Search isn't helping... just a few others with issues but no real answers.

try this... go into /system/etc and locate the file "gps.conf", open it with a text editor and add this line directly underneath C2K_PORT=0
QOS_ACCURACY=16
then put a line underneath it. You could also try disabling the intermediate positioning feature by editing the line that allows intermediate, from "=1" to "=0"
I have no idea if this will help, but it helped back in the day for aosp ROMs on the htc heroc. Good luck
Not that this is exactly a fix and I'm not sure the area you're in but in previous phones and my old TomTom, trying to use GPS in the downtown area of Chicago was impossible. The buildings interfered with signal. Wondering if you could be experiencing something similar. I'm sure there are fixes and mods to improve this sorta thing. I have zero issues with my E3D's gps. instantly finds me, never thrown off. I haven't taken it to the city yet, though, to see how it compares to my older devices though.
there was a gps radio reset for the OG evo and I was hoping there was something similar for the 3d.
update to the newest firmware 2.3.4 with fixes and other misc updates from HTC...it's an OTA update...settings->system updates->HTC Software Update

##4772579# - Reset the GPS
My GPS works very well, locking on quickly and accurately. Especially coming from a Samsung Vibrant which was notorious for having extremely poor GPS.
Does somebody know if the new shipments of the Prime are free of WiFi and GPS issues?
In particular can the GPS operate without a dongle? Or will the dongle be never replaced by an internal fix?
From reading posts some say they have C3/C4 that work great no issues and then theres also those who dont have any GPS either and wifi issues (check out the Wifi/BT thread in General) so its hit or miss your either gonna get one that works or one that doesn't so make sure you can exchange if somethings not to your liking if you are considering TF201

I would say that most Prime's don't suffer from any severe Wifi related issues. I know mine doesn't and its and oldie (bbok).
As for GPS, I have heard people say that the newer C3 and C4 Prime's don't have any problems with GPS however you should take that anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt since I have not yet seen anyone do any sort of conclusive testing with regards to GPS performance on any of the newer Primes either.
Until someone uploads a Youtube video of a non-dongled Prime being used for Navigation or something I would say you will have to take your chances with regards to GPS performance.
Good morning!
Is anyone else having issues with the GPS after a few days? Mine will lock onto the satellites then after about 20 min it'll lose signal. I have an app called GPS test and it seems to lock onto several satellites but the actual positioning doesn't work. This has happened with every rom past gingerbread for me.
Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else had this issue?
Thank you,
Chris

I'm having the same issue. It doesn't matter what ROM I run (Stock Based vs. AOSP) Did you figure out your problem?
Super old thread. Yes, I know. But since I have the rare opportunity to help someone here, I'd thought I'd take it. At some point I'd like to contribute to the community I've learned so much from.
Check out this thread and see if it might come in handy.
