hi guys i use nexus s and i want to install a custom rom. but can i go back to stock rom if i don't like the custom rom or can i get the official updates(like ICS) while in custom rom?
Yes, you can revert back to a stock ROM if you choose... and no, you can't get "official" updates once on a custom ROM. But there will be plenty of customs ROMs based on ICS in the future... depending on your device, of course.

of course you can revert to your previous rom just make sure that you have made a nandroid backup and you re ready to go !

Hello everybody,
My girlfriend has a Galaxy s II with a custom rom.
Now she wants to another rom and by my phone I always start stock.
Which stock rom must i use for her phone to get to 2.3.6 JVZ?
It's a Europe Telephone. Thanks in advance!
Greetz,
You can jump from custom ROM to custom ROM without going to stock first.
If you have a custom ROM with ClockworkMod, you can flash a new ROM from there (be sure to format /system and /data to avoid problems).
If what you want is to revert to stock, you can find stock ROMs and instructions in the Android Developement forum.
Hello,
So it's not really needed to begin from the stock? Not better for the next rom?
no, it doesnt matter

ICS roms are beta at best, I wouldn't advise flashing one.
There is CM9 which is AOSP and there is Samsung leaks, all need ICS bootloaders, search and read before you even consider flashing any of the ICS roms.
how to get ics bootloader?? will it be automatically there if i flash a ics leaked rom??

Depends on the rom, stock ones will come with ICS bootloaders, you *may* need them first for CM9. Also if you want to go back to gingerbread from ICS you will most than likely need to flash back to the old bootloaders from this thread.
Hello all,
I am a super newbee in this field ( please dont laugh ) ! I apologise if i have failed to see the solution for my queries in other threads
I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with the following config:
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband Version : I9100DDLPA
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected]#3
Build number : IML74K.XWLP7
I have already rooted the device with the help of posts on xda. I aspire to put a custom ROM of Jelly Bean in my phone. I have certain questions abt it.
1. Can someone suggest me an apt choice of ROM to suit my current build?
2. will i be able to come back to my stock firmware incase of any problem with the custom ROM. If yes, how ?
3. can i partition my ROM and have to Androids running ? Custom ICS and JellyBean ?
Please help. Thanks in advance.
JB ROMs are still in development stages and need some time to get fully baked.
If you want to try one CM is great.
And you can return back to ICS anytime.
To dual boot JB and ICS you need to flash Siyah kernel.
I would suggest you to flash (install) CM9 for few days. Bcoz its better to be using known stable build for regular use. You will get an idea of what to expect of AOSP ROMS and what are their limitations.
Then you can plunge into exciting world of flashing nightlies (less stable) builds.
You can always go back to default samsung roms if CyanogenMod roms dont suite you. There are lot of custom Samsung rom based roms to choose from with very good customizations.
But before you do any flashing of rom, BACKUP YOUR CURRENT ROM.

Better flash Siyah first...
http://gokhanmoral.com
After Flashing Download the Custom Rom.Zip File You Want to Flash..
Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery (Siyah kernel's) Recovery...
Flash the Zip from Here
Peace
Hit Thanks & It will Disappear

Yes, of course.
Hell everyone,
I have a couple of questions regarding the installation of custom roms.
Does anyone know why there is a requirement to first flash stock firmware before flashing a custom rom in sola?
kernel, rom, recovery, all come with the custom rom, so why is that? (my main device is a nexus so this requirement is very odd for me)
On a second note, if you do a nandroid backup say of cm9 FXP205, and go to whatever other rom, do you need to flash stock again before restoring the nandroid, or you just hit recovery and restore?
thanx and forgive my ignorance on this matter

For the first question
We always ask to flash stock ftf for two reasons
Firstly to get modules and certain dependencies from the stock rom ( thats why in cwm first rom is flashed and then system is wiped and not vice versa)
If u dun do that u will get installation aborted in cwm
Second question m nt sure coz I never restored trans rom nandroid
Bt bt bt.... Since we usually have nandroid backups of upto 1gb, I DUN THINK flashing stock would be a requirement
If m wrong plz correct me
Nandroid backup
For your second question, i have used nandroid backup in x10 mini pro to restore custom rom and saw no issues.
But in my xperia P sometimes I noticed that nandroid restore does not restore the custom bootscreen!!! But if you used advanced restore and restored every partition one by one issue seems to have fixed. So am not quite sure about the nandroid restore.
Thanks for the replies. However, any required modules/dependencies could be passed along with the custom rom, as it happens in other phones? What makes Sony phones unique in this aspect?

You are correct that the modules and others can be passed on through but that will increase the size of rom.So stock based roms can use the files already left behind by the stock ftf and hence there would be no need to include these module/dependencies files in the flashable zip.
Also stock based roms do not need to have kernel file as the stock firmware's kernel is already present on the phone, again reducing size.
The presence of locked bootloader makes sony phones special(although there are htc and motorola also).
In brief when u are going to install a rom that uses custom kernel, you need to have bootloader unlocked,so that custom kernel(not signed by sony)
can be installed e.g CM9.On the other hand if you have locked bootloader, you can't use custom kernel based roms and use stock based roms only e.g pulak's ultimate sola rom.
Hope this helps.
Hey All,
Im considering switching back to a Stock 4.3 ROM from www.samsung-updates.com to my Samsung Galaxy S3 i-9300 they have a international rom for Great Britain which i think will work fine for my phone, Im currently running a SLIMROM of 4.4.2 with Touch CWM..
I personally dont care about the counter and odin flashing, really need to know if these .zips are flashable with CWM and if i can maintain my CWM recovery because i might wanna switch back to slimrom or another if its not as fast or slick as Slimroms seem to be..
Much Love and thanks for all your time
Warren:laugh::laugh:
Stock roms are only flashable using odin.
thanks
Thanks man is it possible to keep CWM or do i have to overwrite that back to stock aswell

Flash stock rom via Odin ,then flash a custom Rec ,finally restore your old rom

How about enjoying both worlds by using CWM based custom rom? The same good-old samsung UI with several major improvements.
I strongly recommend this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060403 (newer and lighter than the UK rom).
If you still want the MK6 version (with all bloadware included), but planning to get it rooted & to install CWM again:
