Hi. Looking for help...
This is my second viewpad 10s and they've both had the same problem:
The USB only recognizes one of my external hard drives (out of three- all of which connect fine to every other laptop or tablet in my life), and out of a dozen tested USB keyboards, only one worked. When they connect they're great, but I can find no reason why its so sketchy. Any answers, and more importantly, fixes, would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think every usb device is compatible. Its hit or miss.
Viewsonic tells me the USB is only compatible with 2.0 devices. When I explained that I was successfully connecting a 1.0 maxtor HD but not a single 2.0 device they actually called me a liar, which was neat. Even my crappy Chinese devices recognize stuff my 10s can't. Is there a fix? Obviously their tech support is not going to be any help.
What format are the hard drives in?
Gtab only reads fat32

Great merciful Zeus! I just plain hadn't thought of that. turns out you're right. And no Rep at viewsonic knew this, nor is it in their literature anywhere. Thanks.

I guess in theory, one of the ones mentioned in this article might work.
In one of my rooms the wifi coverage is very low - so it is tempting to try to get one of them to test.
tried a sabrent one, no luck

Need one that is supported by linux or drivers will for sure be the doom. The question is only wht support has actually been included by Asus.
This thread looked interesting to me, thanks OP.
I have tested some of these before in another project. I found differences in even what was supposed to be the same models, weird stuff. I did find a few models that worked on LINUX, but I will have to dig around to find them.
A good test might be to find a model that quasi *auto detects* and operates on a specific version of LINUX, as a prerequisite, and then test on the dock.
The amount of OS/configuration modifications to *auto detect* should me minimal or none.
Hmm, youll probably need to compile the drivers as modules and manually insert them before it might work. But its worth a shot to just try one first
I should have my hands on the Apple adapter on Tuesday.

i got mine working, just follow the instructions from the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14747728
It's working! I connected my n900 via usb and set it to network mode.
did netcfg usb1 dhcp and got the address from dhcp.
I wonder why they didn't include ifconfig in android :S
Also, I suspect you can use usb0 (client mode port) to connect to your pc.
Confirm: Connect to LAN using USB to RJ45 on Asus Transformer?
Hi,
I just want to confirm with the previous post that you were able to connect to the internet via LAN using a USB to RJ-45 purchased from amazon. (Search for "USB 2.0 to RJ-45 Ethernet Adapter" on amazon.) Did you connect using the USB port on the dock or on the tablet itself? Thanks!

Sorry second part of the first sentence confuses me a little. Are you referring to me? I connected to my phone that has usb network mode. And I attached it to a usb port on the dock.
So I picked up the Apple USB-to-ethernet adapter (MC704ZM/A), plugged it in and no response from my Transformer. Did you guys do anything special to get yours working?

I can confirm that I tried a USB to ethernet adapter (chip seems to be ASIX ax88x72A) and it did not work on my TF. The adapter came with a driver CD and it did include drivers for android. I'm attaching them here in the hope that someone who knows what to do with these files can help.
The driver files can also be found on Asix's website. Google "asix ax88x72A android". Sorry, this board doesn't allow new members to post external links.
I really hope Google or Asus can fix this missing rather fundamental functionality in a future SW update. I don't want to carry a router around and a lot of hotels only have wired internet!

I did a search and found that no one has posted this problem on this forum - I'm the only one ??
My prime use to hooked up with my PC with no problems. At some point recently (I'm thinking the recent ICS update) my PC & Prime had a parting of ways. Now I plug in the Prime and get 'USB device not recognized'.
Downloaded and ran Asus Sync hoping that a driver vanished but no luck.
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit). Has anyone else noticed the same problem and if so - how did you fix it ?
Thanks
I have three computers, and none of them even recognize my prime anymore, not even in Device Manager. This started after I got it back from RMA.
I, myself, am not particularly concerned about it, since I'm just waiting for the Infinity to come out; the Prime I will just pass on to a family member. If the Infinity was going to be released in the far flung future, I'd send it back.

Did you try this for the Prime ? I did not see the Prime on the supported list.
Thanks
I Have the problem as well...thought it was the cable but half happy to see it probably isnt
hey everyone, and I'm so happy to see this thread, but have you guys had similar issues to Mines?
Hello Everyone, I'll try to short and to the point. I've been searching xda/google/androidcentral on and off since maybe early Februrary and still nothing, maybe someone has some awesome insight.
So my computer won't detect my TP anymore for file transfer. It did maybe the first month or so though.
Here's what I've tried so far, with no luck.
- Different Computers - Different Cables - New Asus Brand OEM USB Cable - Aftermarket USB Cable - Different USB Ports (Front and Back of Computer) - USB Debugging Mode - Uninstalled Drivers on my PC to try and get table to re-install it. - Factory Reset (multiple times with and without auto-backup) - Connecting From KeyboardDock to Computer
I convinced my cousin to buy a TP and Dock the other week so I also got to try some extra stuff.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to His PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to His PC and it wouldn't detect.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it wouldn't detect.
I also tried his TP with my USB cables (both oem and aftermarket) on my PC and it connected fine.
Here's Some additional Info, that may be helpful.
I was previously able to connect to my HDMI ports on my TV via micro HDMI, but that does not work anymore either.
I've seen a few people mention serial numbers, so here's some Info, not sure if it's the correct info.
My TP - TF201-B1-CG - S/N starts with a "B" His TP - TF201-B1-GR - S/N starts with a "C"
I thank you all for your time and any insight is much appreciated.
Called ASUS support - I'm the first that they have ever heard that problem. They suggested a factory reset but first I must back the data up. Never done a factory reset, I hope Voodoo will keep the root.
When I finally try it - I'll let you know what happens.
Cool thanks NewbieKeepItSimple, I hope we get this sorted ou!
Hey everyone, I have some more interesting info regarding the USB issue. I didn't want to suspect this as a problem, but yea it looks like it may be an actual bad port on the TFP itself.
My reasoning is that I got my free GPS dongle in the mail today and it won't work. Anyone else test this yet?
Another Question, as far as RMAs go, do we HAVE to call in? Anyone know for sure? I know there's forums, but trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

But you guys are charging fine? Just not connecting to the PC's? Have you had a good look at the connectors both on the cable and the Prime, nothing obvious? You all have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers right? Or maybe tried the universal naked driver utility?

Yep, charges fine. I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with cables and connectors.
As far as trying universal naked driver, I'm pretty sure drivers aren't the issue since I tried a whole different TFP with the same computers and cables (stated above) and it connected and installed the drivers correctly.

My Prime was sync'd at work with my contacts and I put movies on from my home PC. Now neither PC can communicate with the Prime.
There is somethings with the Prime and USB ports that seem a little goofy. I have a USB memory on my keychain that I use for my work files. One of the things I wanted to do with the Prime is access and work on my files during business trips. The work USB memory is 4GB Fat 32 but the Prime can't see it even though all other computers can see it. Plug in an older 2GB memory - the Prime can see it. Plug in my Apple iPhone - the Prime can see it. Plug in some other USB memories no problem but my work USB is invisible.
I really can't see any reason for the Prime to suddenly become invisible to computers but I will try the factory reset once I get my memory 64GB SDcard next week.

that's so frustrating. factors reset didn't work for me but I'm wishing luck to you.
Ok.. something to try before going directly to wiping your Prime...
First, try plugging it into a different USB port. This will cause the PC to try and load a new driver.
If that fails, click Start, right click on Computer and select Manage. Look for an entry called "Portable Devices" and under that "Transformer Prime TF201".
If you don't have that at all, then the system has failed to identify the device entirely.. try it with another PC (take it to a Best Buy and plug it in.. ). If it fails there, then something has changed in your Prime. If you've flashed the ROM, it's possible that's the problem.
If you DO see the entry, but the PC isn't recognising it - right click on the entry for the Prime and select 'Uninstall'. On the dialogue box that pops up, check "Delete the driver software for this device" and let it do its thing.
Unplug the Prime, then plug it back in. It should download a new driver for the Prime. Hopefully this will fix the problem.
I've never heard of an Android device's ADB USB port failing - it's entirely possible of course - but we have five here.. which is pretty amazing.

I'm not holding out much hope either but who knows. The ASUS is rooted but I haven't flashed anything. Another tack I tried is using the just the tablet then keyboard connection but both give the same results.
If I'm connecting to two different spots that on the Prime (dock/Tablet) and there are two different interfacing chip sets involved. Maybe it is a software bug that is screwing up how the Prime addresses the USB (protocol).

hmm even if it was 2 different chip sets it'd still have to go through the main one. it'd be great if it was software based issue

All mymobiler threads are a little old so here's a new one.
I've worked with MM on Win CE on the iPaq and it was great therefore real happy when this week found out the MM for Android.
I have the G-tab with Mountain Laurel and BOUGHT ROOTED. My desktop is runing W7
The tablet connects to my desktop using WiFi with no problems and vice versa using the USB cable but for the life of me I can't connect using MyMobiler.
Their website says unknown sources should be allowed but I can't find that setting on my G-Tab - please, any help from anyone? Elsewhere, it was suggested I upgrade to Flashback - H'comb but I don't know how to do that I'm handicapped at that level.
Finally, it also says to install a USB driver but if I am already able to connect via USB I am presuming I don't need to.
Can it be possible that not one person is able to answer or make a comment in approx. 2 weeks.
Thanks
So.. Right now I'm currently building a computer from well, basically scrap. So far, everything seems to be going well in terms of gathering the parts and now it's almost time to get my hands dirty and start putting it together. The basic idea is that this laptop is going to run off the MK808 portable android USB stick, which will control hopefully every aspect of the PC from a functioning webcam, touch-pad, keyboard and so on. I'm doing the build by tearing down an old 17" laptop that has a fried mobo, and I'm trying to salvage as much as possible for use in this project.
So, now onto my question! On sites like ebay, you can purchase adapters to convert the optical drive of laptops into a USB external powered drive. If I was to give this the power it needs, and connect it via USB to the MK808, would the Android OS 4.1 be able to recognize it? I do plan to do this either way, as I'll also be running Ubuntu next to Android, but this would be some sick bragging rights! I've heard iffy stories about the Samsung drive that kinda works with Android, and I can't figure out what that would have that this wouldn't.. but then again, I'm sure you people here on XDA know much more about this than I!
+1
Im also searching for this answer as well

Hello,
I bought an external keyboard that connects via the mini usb port. It didn't work, but found a suggestion:
When I first connected my adapter that came with my tablet to the keyboard adapter I was very disappointed that nothing happened. I tried several different browser pages, but nothing happened. I read reviews on here and noticed on about that someone mentioned they changed their USB settings and their keyboard finally started working. So, I immediately went to my Settings, Advanced Settings, and then USB BUS MODE and changed it from DEVICE mode to HOST mode and VOILA - the keyboard immediately started functioning

OTG not in any of the Nook Tablet yet
OTG is not implemented yet on the stock nor current cm10 roms based on what I have asked in this forum for Nook Tablet. I know you can do this with the new nooks that have monochrome display. May I ask where did you read this article?

Were you reading the review for the Nook Color with working usb otg? It does work for that tablet, not the NT though.

I wasn't looking specifically for how to get it working on the tablet, just looking in general for how to do it in android. Hopefully they implement the otg soon
I just downloaded the new cm10 (snappy and no more reboot/sdcard lost errors!!) but there wasn't anything about the type of usb connection in that one either...
Am I not going to be able to use this keyboard? Will I have to break down and buy a price blue tooth one????

At this time the NT does not have usb otg on any ROM, it may in the future, but if and when is not known at this time. The NT will never have bluetooth, Never. It has been well documented why, do a search and read. So a BT keyboard will never work. Is it really that hard to type with your thumbs?

It isn't really a matter of difficulty, it is a matter of duration. I didn't want a full laptop and I like the android os so wanted to try a tablet with a keyboard for my mobile computing needs. I am do a good amount of typing (chapters for novels and such) and prefer a keyboard. I was using my phone before and it was a lot slower than what I can do with a keyboard and got tiring after an hour or so. It isn't detrimental that I can't use a keyboard, just desired.

I bought a Toshiba Thrive 32gb off craigslist for $200. I am now running CM10. I bought it for those exact reasons. It has full sized usb, full sized hdmi, micro usb, full sized sd card expandable to 128 gb, bluetooth capable, gps, 10.1" screen. I use a mouse through usb, bluetooth keyboard, and I hook it up to my TV or
computer monitor and is performs really well as a portable computer with little cost involved.

lol, after spending 150 on the tablet I think that I am going to skip buying another, however I have started looking at other virtual keyboard options and will be trying out a few to see if they can fill the gap until/if they activate the usb otg. Thanks for the info and I will reply if I find a keyboard that I like enough to be useable as a touch typer!!
