It seems that a few people are tweaking their APN settings and achieving faster downloads. These are the changes that I have done and it does seem to improve the speed some. Before I was getting 6 down and 1 up. Now Im seeing almost 8 down and 1.5 up.

has anyone posted Skyrocket APN settings for comparison?
Do you delete the other APN's or what? I mean, I added the new APN with the settings provided, but there's still a bullet point thing next to the stock APN..
I can add new APN, but cannot modify the existing ATTPHONE APN. Maybe we need to modify the existing one? I am rooted btw.

Ya, that works for me. ^^
[This post is no longer relevant, as the data measured was flawed. My later post explains that after proper testing, I saw no reasonable improvement with this APN.]
I'll just wait till people get some finalized settings, lol..

Because that is solely based on the assumption that AT&T's network is not congested and always gives out consistent results. We all know how true is that
I can sit here and make 10 speed tests in a row. The results will be 10 diiferent speeds varying widely.
That could definitely explain it, since I made the change I see faster results more often.

ATTphone is the default I believe.
may be someone can do a test with two same phones testing at the same time,
one with new apn one with the default one.
testing at different time does not prove the trick is working.
I tried the recommended APN settings. no solid change.

Can we confirm that the Atrix does not have HSUPA? Is it possible to enable this feature. I think this is a deal-breaker for most people especially with the laptop dock and extra fees associated with it.
I would start by looking at the build.prop file.
It might be as easy as that.
its already confirmed that it doesnt. Read the reviews for proof.
I can absolutely confirm that the Inspire has it disabled and that a different ROM enables it. ATT needs to be raked over the coals for this. I think I'm bout done with ATT branded phones..
That should be reason enough for a lot of people not to purchase it. Without a European version of the Atrix how will US AT&T customers overcome this limitation?
Has AT&Fail replied to this as to why they're doing this? It _might_ be their way of controlling the amount of users on their network, ya know? This would 'right size' the network load by moving folks to other carriers ... a possibly brilliant move on their part, and very transparent

Can't we do this by rooting and then root exployer..? This is really gonna suck if we can't get HSUPA. I know MOTO locks down their stuff but really, I hope we can over come this.
Apparently the fix to this whole issue is to not use the stock wap profile. The stock WAP profile has data routed though a proxy server that is causing slowdowns. Once the proxy is removed people saw speed increases and uploads past 1.5mbs.
I'm glad that we have people smart enough to figure this out and possibly fix it... but why should the average consumer be subjected to this by AT&T? Most people wouldn't know this while AT&T laughs their asses off limiting their data speeds. This is a huge dealbreaker for me, and this would be too for everyone else if the general population knew about this. AT&T really needs to be called out for this and burned for essentially throttling speeds on all their smartphones besides iPhones while claiming fast speeds... Where can we start this?

and this has been proven to fix the hsupa speeds? If so, how could it be this simple?!
Over in the Dev Discussion there is a possible solution based off some testing I had Fixter do as well as what I discovered on HoFo about someone who got HSUPA working on their Inspire without rooting or changing the Rom.

yeah i saw that thread. i am on a medianet unlimited plan and if i switch to an LTE plan the max data i can get is 5GB and i can go through 5gb in 2 weeks being Conservative (lots of time on the road). I dont mind the speeds i get now. i just wish the connection was more stable. i find my self having to toggle data on and off quite often just to get websites to load, and this is in areas with 4 bars.
maybe i could benifit from a different modem or different apn settings not sure.
Yes I am on a very old unlimited plan which only costs me about $15.00 per month. But it is not
LTE. But, I live in a smaller city in Texas which doesn't have 4G yet so the rep told me it wouldn't help me a lot anyway. I was using XXKH3 and getting fairly decent performance. Lately though I have bounced between XXLPB and XXLPH with either one of those signal and network widgets actually work. I average around 3.5 mb/s download and 1.25 mb/s up.
If you haven't checked this thread yet, it has many CWM flashable modems

is your apn wap.cingular?
i usually get anywhere from 1.5-4mbs down. but my problem is mainly not being able to access websites sometimes even when i have good signal. tapatalk, G+, FB, etc. when this happens i usually have to reset my radio by toggling data on and off or airplaine mode.
Yes I use wap.cingular also, but have no such issues out here. Maybe because it is so wide and open.

I myself have been unable to find any other APN settings to function properly, which may be due to the fact that I don't have a 4g sim card. I am using an international version and the AT&T store couldn't figure out the imei issue until I explained.

Mods please sticky this.
There's been several threads with people saying that they are getting intermittent slow or no data connections. Some people suspected throttling.
I did some digging around and found that it is a common issue on all ATT LTE phones. I have read up on various fixes, found one that worked, and will summarize it here.
Create a new APN that is EXACTLY the same as your current one with two exceptions:
1. APN: phone
2. APN type: internet
Save the APN. You should now have 2 APNs. Make sure that the original AT&T PTA APN is the selected one with the green dot.
What we've done here is replace the APN just for internet, and left everything else the same. If you try setting the type of the new APN for everything, it breaks MMS.
There are several dead spots in my town where I get incredibly slow or no data , despite my wife's iPhone working just fine. I made this change and now it works perfectly. Same top speeds for upload and download.
The only thing I cannot test is LTE, since I am not in an LTE area. From what I've read, this is an LTW APN so it should work.
Thanks. Works great and I'm in LTE area.
Very interesting.. thanks for the post.
Just for clarity, we're not to remove "internet" from the original PTA, right?
Edit: Oh, and we can name it whatever we want, I'm assuming? Or does it have to match the original to replace it?

You can't remove the original APN - it's not editable. Leave it as is.
You can name the new APN whatever you want, as long as the APN is called phone.

Nevermind previous post....
Please note, PTA APN is required if you want to use LTE. Phone APN is for HSPA+. If you are in the area where there is no LTE service, this might be the solution for you as AT&T has a network issue ever since it launched LTE that LTE phones with PTA APN can't get consistent internet access when there is no LTE signal.
So, don't DO this if you are in a LTE area. Or else, you will be forced into HSPA+ network instead of LTE network you paid for.
If you select the phone apn yes....you will be forced into hspa. ..actually in my case it went to no cell connection at all.
There is a theory that simply having it there but not selecting it may help...which doesnt make sense but I am testing it regardless

that's basically what this is - having it there but not selecting it. its almost as if it uses it as a fallback when the PTA apn can't get connected in an hspa area. this would explain why my hspa issue is fixed and others can still connect to lte just fine.
This problem is quite wide spread when Skyrocket was first released. Can't believe AT&T still haven't sort this out.

then you did it wrong. make sure the original PTA apn is the selected one, not the new one. also make sure the new apn type is only internet. I had the same issue when I made those mistakes when I was first testing.
Did this and does not work as people have stated. Doing speed test before adding the apn I would get lte speeds. After adding the phone apn my speed test decreased considerably. This was with att pta selected as well.
ATT has to fix the connectivity issues. For myself, when I do speedtest on lte, it is very sporadic! It times out sometimes while doing speedtest. It's very annoying!

I just went to my apn settings and noticed it was using a Rogers lte apn by default. I added this one since I don't use lte. My phone is from the UK and doesn't have lte anyway.
Name: Rogers
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC:http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Now I get about 6mb down compared to 2 before. Just sharing my experience. Hopefully someone can confirm this works for them too.
Now I wonder if this will have any positive effect on battery performance.
Cheers.
Quick question. The MMSC there is an astrix on the front. I noticed my s3 was on the same LTE thing. So i input your specs on mine, no astrix on the front of the mmsc and everything seems to be working. I dont know if its any faster though?

Sorry about that. Fixed now. No asterisk.
No noticable speed difference for me - 2MBps with the LTE APN, 2MBps with the settings listed.
Been testing a few different modems on my i9300 on fido/rogers in Montreal.
Currently testing XXLEF and getting pretty good results
Reason I went with this modem is as per samsungs codes

Seems like this modem has had the most revisions. Anyways getting very good Dbm levels and speeds are same as usual which isnt a bad thing.
Has anybody else tried changing from Rogers LTE to a different one? I'm currently looking into different modems and such and as one poster said earlier, they found out the APN was set under Rogers LTE. Just curious if anyone else has found any noticeable performance increase from switching the APN and/or modem.

The lte won't work on the the international version thus I recommend not using that apn as it may cause you issues down the line
Hmm, is that XXLEF modem still working well for you? Wherebouts in Canada are you located? I'm on DXLF3 and it's ok, reached my bandwidth cap for this month so can't really test modems speed other than DB levels but I will get into doing that once it resets.
Using xxlf5 still. Anyone know any other good ones? I know lfb is a mess and lg8 wasn't very good?
I'm usually only getting about 2Mbps on Rogers typically. I imagine the network isn't the fastest in my town, but are you folks getting better speeds with the SGS3 elsewhere in Canada?
Hey everyone! So I've had this phone for about a month now and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Since I've gotten the phone, I haven't seen LTE pop up once (apparently CT has no LTE yet...) but this weekend I was visiting some friends in Manhattan. I know some parts of Manhattan have LTE. for example my friend has an iPhone (same carrier obviously) and he had LTE while I did not.. I made sure my network setting was on cdma/gsm/lte auto and I even went as far as typing in *#*#4636#*#* to check the radio settings. I did get the LTE symbol for like 10 secs but after that it disappeared and I lost service.. Another note to make is that I'm not on the stock apn setting because I changed it to epc.tmobile.com to boost my hspa+ speeds.

Haha that's so funny! One more question even though I wasn't on fast.t-mobile.com and was on epc.t-mobile.com i still wasn't able to see the LTE icon, any clue why? Thanks!
The only thing i can think of is that HTC / Samsung seem to have lower DB reporting of the actual signal strength compared to Apple.
Ive been in a discussion on other threads about how the signal indicator on my Note 2 and HTC One always seem to show low signal when LTE is connected.
Another person chimed in stating that they compared their HTC One to an iPhone 5 and noticed the signal indicator on the One shows 1-2 bars and the iPhone 5 showed full bars LTE.. Same T-Mobile Network phones side by side.
My rebuttal was simple. I downloaded an app that showed on both my Note 2 and HTC One a higher decibel reading then what my phone software was showing.
What leads me to believe this is with 1 bar i can still get 20+ megs down and 15+ megs up. Normally in low signal speeds would degrade.
I was also with Sprint on the GS3 and EVO LTE and the EVO LTE suffered from the same problems early on. They sent out several firmware and radio updates that corrected false and low signal readings and right before i left Sprint my EVO LTE outperformed the GS3 When / IF i could find LTE in Dallas on Sprint.
Give it some time. Im hoping they put more towers online and that devices get radio and firmware updates to perform better with the LTE that TMO is using.
I don't think the APN matters. I use the different APN for faster HSPA and I can still get LTE. I'll show you when I get home or in an area with LTE. LoL!! Also, in that very thread it was stated that changing the APN won't affect your LTE.
perhaps BUT if you misspell the apn then it wont be effective at all.
APN:fats.t-mobile.com you wont get an actual connection to LTE because its supposed to be fast. not fats.
This also happens if its the ONLY apn. If you have multiple APN it will revert back to another that works..
but this only happened to me so who knows..

My girlfriend complains about hearing static in the background despite the signal being clear on my end. After speaking with T mobile customer service today, I was told it could be the phone or the whole rooting thing...not sure whats going on and I only have three more days to return/replace the phone. When it comes to service recognition by the radio and software of the phone, the apn doesn't matter. Think about the apn settings as joining a proxy server; if you notice you are just placing IP, web server addresses and port information in that settings page, and you must be already member of the network (have connection) for these settings to be relevant.
That is why if the apn settings are wrong you will still have service but not receive data.
The issue with one phone displaying LTE right next to another which is not (same provider) comes about how the software for the radio is configured and how well calibrated is the antenna of the phone and the radio processor... And a few other environmental factors too.
