SGSII Odin3 help please - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Ive got Kies and Odin3 v1.85 for my galaxy s2 and when i put my sgs2 into download mode, odin 3 does not find my phone. but when i turn the phone on and then open odin 3, it displays a com port???
Ive tried reinstalling kies several times with no luck!
Any help would be gladly appreciated.
thanks,
Alex

Weird! Try closing kies altogether. That includes exiting it from the system tray.
If that doesn't help, see if you have USB debugging on under settings / applications / development. If it's off turn it on.

Even though kies is not open, it is still running. It usually starts automatically when PC boots up.
Not sure what you use, but on windows xp in the bottom right corner where the time is, you can see what is running. Sometimes you need to expand it to see what else is running. Or even press ctrl+alt+del and in task manager kill kies process from there.
Might not help but worth a try.

ODIN3 Problem
Hi yall,
Noob here im sorry but I was wondering if you guys can help me out.
I am trying to root my SGS2 and/or update firmware to ICS using ODIN and various ROMS.
I have the Samsung drivers and unistalled KIES since iv read in some forums it can conflict with ODIN. ODIN does recognize my phone as a COM.
I am having a problem with the ODIN3 software both v1.85 and v1.83. For some reason that I cant figure out, when I try to load the PDA file, I find the file and add it but it will not show the file in the PDA box (its like it wont allow any file to be loaded)
I tried going ahead and flash the phone assuming the file loaded with the PDA tick box checked...and nothing (doing everything by the books here i.e. using USB debugging, connecting the phone only when in download mode etc.)
Appreciate the help.
Tnx

Are you using Windows Vista or Windows 7? Try running Odin as administrator. (right click > run as administrator)

have you tried using task manager and stopping kies like other posters have suggested.

Yes I did try that, I have kies uninstalled but still have the samsung drivers and still no luck.
What else can I do?

you tried opening odin first then putting phone into dl mode maybe try different usb ports or redownloading drivers.

No need to worry about it.
Uninstall the drivers associated with the phone. Are you using Windows?
For XP: Go to start > Control Panel > System > Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Find the driver for the phone. I remember it has a yellow icon, and the drivers name is a mix of capital letters
It's probably similar for Windows 7, but i wouldn't know.
Uninstall the driver associated with the phone, then reinstall by plugging your phone into the computer in download mode. It would help to uninstall and reinstall Odin as well, just in case.
If you get Odin to work, just work away like you would.
Thanks for your reply, i have uninstalled the drivers, but when i plugged my phone back in, the drivers are not being installed and i can not find them on the internet. Any ideas?
I know how i messed up, i completely forgot to root my phone before i started to flash, any ideas on how i can just get my phone back to its normal working everyday self?
Will i just need to get the device recognised by Odin then insert the Ops file and the I5500.tar file and flash it back to stock?
edit- managed to get drivers installed, now how do i fix my phone? Just flash the .OPS and the stock I5500.tar file?

I think it'll fail again if your phone isn't rooted. You can't get rid of the Computer-Caution-Phone image without succesfully using Odin.
You could try to flash the .tar and .ops file again. I can't see it working though unfortunately.
Any ideas then? Is there a way to root my phone via Odin or anything?

I've never heard of rooting your phone through the download mode or through Odin.
Maybe there's a file you can put on your phone through Odin which doesn't require root? I'll take a look around for you.
Thank you so much, i appreciate it, I'm 16, can't really live without a phone especially with college parties coming up in the next few days aha, I knew i shouldn't of risked around with flashing again!

Just thinking that Odin is a program which requires root so there won't be any file you can transfer when unrooted. I had a quick glance over at the Odin thread, and the first step is that you have to root your phone.
I'm sorry, but there's nothing else I can think of which might help. Maybe if somebody with a bit more knowledge/expeerience sees this thread, they might help.
Can Odin detect your phone?
Ah man, thanks anyway, yes Odin detects my phone, I'm trying to use SuperOneClick Root on my PC- Do you know any other Root software that works on PC?

I don't know of any others, but Superoneclick works fine for the Galaxy 5. Like I said, I've never heard of using it during download mode so just be careful with that.
If Odin detects your phone, have you tried just closing Odin and plugging out the USB safely?
Can't use Superoneclick as my phone isn't in USB Debugging and i obviously can't change that aha I have just tried that, no luck with the closing Odin and unplugging it, should i try installing CWM again or is that a bad idea?

It's a bad idea because it just won't work. Odin will crash again.
I don't know what to do I'm afraid.
Looks like my phone is shagged due to my own stupidity, I forgot to root it because my phone was previously rooted and it went back for repairs, then I completely forgot i didnt install Root access -.-
Do you think i can recover my phone or is it well and truly gone?
Well it's not like your phone is bricked or anything. It's just broken a connection to Odin and it won't boot until it's completed.
You could always return it for repairs again. Your warranty might be broken though.
If I happen to come across a DIY fix then I'll post it here.
Thanks for your help mate, i've decided to just send my phone back for repairs, buy a new phone (Probably a Blackberry for BBM and stuff with all my mates), and sell my phone once i get it back.I have gave up on Samsung mobiles.
Thank you.
Did you send your phone alredy? Uncompress the firmware.tar file and unselect "one package in Odin" . On the boot in odin select the boot file of the .tar and run odin. Maybe that will help

Hi, had the very same issue as you. Odin crashed just few sec after start. What I did ; uninstalled everything (Odin & files comes with it, KIES). Then restart PC, go to Samsung.com and download latest KIES, when downloaded go to Tools and check for updates. Accept/run them, when done restart PC. Now, read the steps bellow, and see the attached picture.
1. Extract Odin v4.28 and Ops File.zip I5500XXXX.rar
2. Open Odin v4.28,
- Select OPS tab: EUROPA_v1.0.ops
- Make sure Auto Reboot & Protect OPS selected in Option tab
- get this I5500XFJPQ from samfirware.com ( for some strange reason only this package worked!), download, and unzipp to folder called GT-I5500. In to this folder place Odin and ops as well.
- Make sure One Package selected in Option tab
3. Turn off phone, remove battery for 5second, put it back
4. Hold "Volume Down, Center button & Power button" in the same time to enter Download Mode (yellow triangle)
5. Connect to PC with USB cable
6. When the data line and the phone connection is successful, com port shows yellow in Odin
7. Press Start on Odin
8. Waitin & Pray!
9. PASS, its done!
*Hard reset after flashing *2767*3855#
*Check ur Phone Info *#*#1234#*#*
Note: my i5500 was rooted, so if was yours then ok. When pressing buttons you must see an yellow triangle! If you don't see it don't try connect. Remove battery for 3-5 minutes and try again...
Thanks for the replies, I've got my 'broken' phone in its box on my wardrobe, Carphone Warehouse have ordered me a brand new G5 to replace mine, I should get that sometime next week, but I'm buying a HTC Wildfire S pretty soon anyway!
Thanks for your help, I'd rather keep my broken phone well, broke aha.
Have you tried flashing twrp recovery then using cf-autoroot?

Error: Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue...

I've searched google and XDA for a solution to this but so far can't find one.
I flashed the speed mod kernal and ever since i just get "Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" when in upload mode.
When i reboot the phone i just get the samsung screen with the exclaimatino mark.

Pull out your battery on your phone, . Re-install usb-drivers in Kies, reboot your computer.
Close everything related to Kies, also in toolbar trayagent and kies pdlr (right-click on windows toolbar). Put phone in downloadmode and try to reflash firmware with Odin.
Good luck

Maybe a bad flash, dowload the rom again and try it again. The rest seems fine!
Re-extract the .tar from the .zip and try again. I ran into the same issue once; prior to re-downloading the firmware again I re-extracted the .tar, and all was golden. Good luck.
I re-downloaded the rom.

[Q] Read all the posts I can find and I still can't flash with odin! Please help!

Hi everyone,
I brought a new galaxy s2 phone about 4 weeks ago and it has spent most of that time soft bricked since I tried to update it to the newest firmware, K14....
I am using windows 7 starter, 32bit. I have installed kies, uninstalled and re-installed kies, tried uninstalling kies and just using the drivers.
Recently I did a clean install of windows, installed kies, as more drivers seem to be recognized and downloaded odin v1.85. I restart the computer, start task manager end all processes that say kies, run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start and the process only goes as far as boot.bin.
I have tried all of my usb ports and the only difference is the number of the modem installed driver and how far along odin gets. With two ports it only goes as far as setup connection which was as far as anything went before I re-installed windows. I have replaced the usb cable and made sure the phone battery is fully charged. The phone was put into usb debugging mode before it was bricked. I have attached a picture of what drivers get installed when I plug in the phone. The firmware I am attempting to flash is the uk 3 version off the firmware page of this website.
Please can somebody give me the solution it is driving me nuts!
Sorry for waffling but I figure you need to know what I've tried so that I don't waste anybodies time.
Thanks guys
Did you try a different stock rom? Did you try a different pc? Or if you want to, flash a CF-root kernel. Then boot in recovery and flash a rom of your choice.
The flashcounter will start and stock roms can't be flashed this way (at least as far as I know).
Is your phone a I9100 model?
I ask this to make sure you are trying to flash the correct firmware for your device.

Hi Lenny,
Yh, i have tried it on my desktop which runs 7 home premium. Clean install with same results. Tried the K14 firmware a few times but that never got any further than setup connection. Don't understand the rest of your post sorry. Can you do a flash for dummies thing? And is there a firmware you would recommend trying?
@ aceofclubs -the box says i9100 and so does the sticker in the back.
@ JJEgan - the first cable I used was the one in the box and while the one I have replaced by ebay, they had good feedback. The K14 firmware was given to be by a user of the galaxy s2 that he had successfully flashed with.
Does the phone look to have installed correctly, the guy who gave me the firmware said he had abd appear in device manager, which I haven't got. Also after the phone is finished installing drivers if I click in the system tray, the green icon that shows devices that are present is not there and neither is the phone but if I go into device manager samsung composite device is.

No you dont need a ADB neccesarily for flashing. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a tool that comes with the Android SDK that allows you to control and interface with your Android device. Well do u have the phone specifications before bricking it, like Model No, Built, CSC, Kernal Etc.
First try to uninstall Kies and Install the latest version, so that you have the latest drivers.
Check the Intratech thread on Stock ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and download the correct rom.( I presume you have I9100 Intenational Version of S2). Open Odin 1.85, do not change any options, brownse and put the stock rom u downloaded into the PDA section and click on start button, you should be good.PM me if you have any issues.
The above didn't work. Here's what I got:

AS you have the yellow box in Odin you have the drivers all the firmware in that link works .
run odin as a administrator, put the tar file in pda, only auto reboot is selected. I then plug in the phone, in download mode, wait for yellow box and press start
Lets do this the right way just to be sure . Open Odin put the tar file in PDA
go to download mode at first screen download mode on phone follow instruction ( vol up from memory ) after next screen connect Samsung USB cable to phone and PC .

Thanks, think I've done that anyway but, just to check, what do you mean by next screen?
The screen when you are in download mode and press volume up.

So close! I plugged the phone in and got as far as cache with the green progress bar showing just the tiniest bit. Left it for over an hour but the bar didn't move at all! Encouraged I restarted the computer to try again only to find that now the computer and odin won't recognize the phone until I uninstall and reinstall kies and always hangs on cache. I restarted in the first place as the phone never shows in the system tray. Sorry to be a bore but have you any idea why everyone else can plug in and flash and my machines refuse to! I welcome any ideas you have. Thank you.
Instead of Odin, you could try Heimdall. Maybe that will work for you.

hey hope everyone had a good christmas and new year. Still no joy, where do I get PIT files to flash with the newest version of heimdall to go with our firmware? The newest version won't let me add files until I enter a PIT. I tried version 1.1 but I couldn't get it to recognise a compatible device.
On the odin front: I thought I'd cracked it. It started flashing, took hours but I had half a green progress bar and then it just seem to freeze. Also this seems replicable a few times and then I get stuck at setup connection again. I then have to do a system restore to get it to flash to the furthest point again. Does this give anyone any clues? Or does anyone know of any heimdell packages I could try? And the long shot, any way of getting firmware on to an sd card and flashing that way when a phone is soft bricked?
Sorry if I'm annoying you but there has to a way round this. I brought a rooted one to use while this is sorted, love the phone but need to know I can update and be able to sort it out if things go wrong.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

Updating with Samsung Kies Nightmare!

Hi to all, I connected my GS 3 to Samsung Kies and found the LFB update.. I proceeded with the download which seems to be taking a lifetime, I am on a 50MB connection, the program itself took a few seconds to upgrade, the download of the firmware however is taking a lifetime! it would go to 2% and report an error, restart the download goes up to 3 or 5% and again reports an error, every time i redownload it increments by 1 to 2% and reports an error.
Anyone experiencing such issues with Kies?
Can I simply download the LFB firmware via SamMobile and flash it with Odin?
Thanks for the help..

I had that too, do yourself a favour and uninstall Kies (except for the usb drivers).
Than download the rom you need from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ ,
download Odin V3 3.0.4 and flash the rom with Odin. You don`t need Kies perse to update. Kies is a nightmare

Just make sure you follow Odin to the letter...... Don't tick any boxes that look as if they need ticking..... and make sure you drop the phone into Download mode before connecting otheriwse Odin won't find the phone.

Readup a bit, it isn`t hard but there are a few things you must know:
1. Enable usb debugging on your phone
2. Go into downloadmode (volume down + power + menu all at the same time)
3. See if IDCOM light up yellow and in the left bottom window it says added when you connect your phone to the pc.
4. Unzip the downloaded file ONCE into a .tar or md5 file
5. Place that file in the PDA section.
6. Do not tick anything, only f.reset.time and autoreboot should be ticked.
7. Start
Too late but maybe usefull for someone else
I installed Samsung Kies on my main PC, on one of my secondary SSDs. It prevented my entire PC from closing down, the processes could not be ended in task manager, and it bluescreened my PC when it started up. Had to uninstall it from safe mode in the end. However, on my laptop it worked fine... WTF? Giant POS.
Yep kies sucks, I'm using odin most of the times!

If you`re using a windows pc you could install a programm called Revo uninstaller to uninstall software, it works fine for me and cleans all directories that windows doesn`t clean.
Managed to update my gs3 using odin, just had to reflash cf foot all seems ok ;-)

[Q] Broke My Beloved Galaxy S YP-GI1CW

Hi
I unsuccessfully tried to root my YP-GI1CW using the process described at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
I realise now it was the wrong process but unfortunately my player now has the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue".
I would like to recover if if possible but Although Odin can detect the device when attached, adb does not see any devices. Im not sure if I can make the damage any worse but would appreciate any help in recovering my device.
Thanks - xdanewbie
Did you make a backup of your ROM first off
Second: can you get in recovery
Third: if you want to superuser try superoneclick to root your device
Fourth:you have to be careful not to do things like that it's very dangerous to the device.

As long as you can access download mode you should be able to get the device working again. I'd try heimdall (get suite 1.3 I believe) instead of Odin. It usually works better. You just need to find the Odin stock package for your device.

No you didn't break your device forever. All you have to do is install your stock rim that suites your device and flash it with hemidall

Hi
I have found all the files I need here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850
BUT I cant get the device into download mode. I start the device with Powe+vold down+home key and it asks me to press vol up to continue. However, when I press vol up I get the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue" error.
Boy am i learning now
Thanks - xdanewbie
Hi
I realised that Heimdall was failing as it was using the standard sansung USB drivers. Im now trying to figure out how to stop those drivers from loading every time i plug in the YP-GI1.
In the meantime, I used ODIN to try and load the PIT and PDA rom image.
It appears to work but then the write fails (see attachment)
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51762484 on heimdall did you follow my instructions on "----Installing device's driver for Hemidall----"? That's how I got it to install the correct drivers. Note: This is for restoring a YP-G1 (Galaxy Player 4.0) so don't use that restore file.
Is This Progress ?

Hi
I couldnt get zdiag to pick up any driver, the word samsung_android briefly appears when i connect the usb cable to the device but by the time standard usb driver load, the zdiag drop down window is blank.
However, I tried Odin 3.0.7 with the pit and rom files and the device did flash sucessfully. Now the device boots and says sansung galaxy SII GT-9100G and a yellow triangle and stops there. I can boot the device into download mode but I cannot seem to get into recovery mode by holding power-home-vol+
Im not even sure if this is progress or whether I have used the wrong rom (which i doubt because it clearly stated it was for the galaxy 4.2 international version YP-GI1CW
I have taken a screenshot of the successful flash.
Thanks for talking the time to help me. Im a little stuck now as I dont know what to do next.

First you would need to take the right package for your device as I explicitly written it was made for YP-G1 only. (See the YP-G1CW) you would need in that case, something so you can fully restore your device. Maybe you can find it in the 4.2 general forum.
And even so you said it was made for the 4.2, the file says it's for YP-G1 a.k.a the 4.0.

Did you try getting the 4.2 drivers from Samsung Kies and then using zadig? Also it seems like you're using an S2 restore, which isn't for your device. The comment I linked you to is for restoring a YP-G1 so you would have to get the right heimdall package for your 4.2 like zaclimon said.

Yep, Im officially an idiot. I did not even know the firmware was for the 4.0. I had missed the different between the YP-G1 and theYP-GI1
I have now found the correct rom here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1884071
However, i have tried every version of Odin from 1.3 to 3.0.9 and they all fail to complete the Nand write (see below)
I have tried 2 pc's with 2 cables and all versions of Odin.
Any other pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks - xdanewbie

I think you are going to have to use Heimdall for this. Try and get the drivers installed for this device, and see if zadig picks it up.
Day 4
Hi
OK. It appears that I can either setup my PC to Use Heimdall (which requres the samsung KIES drivers NOT to be installed) or Odin (which requires the drivers to be installed)
I have now deinstalled the kies usb drivers, run drivecleanup to remove the old usb entries and downloaded Heimdall 1.3.1. When I run zdiag it picks up the samsung usb driver and install the heimdall driver.
Im trying now to use the rootted rom available (which seems ok for odin) available at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1884071
However, if I try to use it with Heimdall 1.3.1 it says missing firmware.xml
I have a friends galaxy 4.2 also. Is there any way to extract the required info from that device or can anyone give pointers to where i might find a heimdall package for the YP-GI1CWXEU
Thanks - xdanewbie
In my opinion...heimdall is a little more advanced as opposed to odin. I suggest you stick to Odin...the flash might have failed because you flashed the wrong files before. From your thread...I believe you will get the PIT file...flash that and then flash the ROM and if you want, the kernel.
EDIT: I tested Odin v3.04...and it works fine with my YP-GI1.

Hi
Thanks for your help. I have the rom from the link above but where would i get the pit file from ?
Thanks - xdanewbie
Update: I found the PIT file for the international 4.2 version. I used odin 3.04 with the pit file followed by the rom and my device its now working again Is there any way now to get rid of the Salaxy S2 logo ?
Either way, many thanks to all who helped and I hope this thread helps those who were as silly as I was !
Thanks - xdanewbie
To remove the yellow triangle, you need to use a USB JIG, google the term to know what I mean. There are no other ways to do the same.

PS: For those who may be interested, 4.2 case seem very expensive. I purchased this (whch is for a galaxy S2) and its a perfect fit but you need to
extended the button holes with a dremel.
