NOLIGHTS KERNEL
Do your LEDs bother you? How about your screen?
Overview
This kernel is based off of silverneedle 1.0, the purpose is to improve phone lighting on top of already awesome kernels. Versions prior to 1.1.3 used RCMIX 2.3.3.
Recent Notes:
Added some tweaks from a Sensation Kernel. There was an interesting feature I saw in a Sensation kernel done by mdeejay called "two way call recording" so I included that in the latest kernel. You need the 2WCR app, rVoix application records both incoming and outgoing calls, in addition to a supporting kernel for it to work. I am not responsible for you breaking local laws. rVoix application can be found HERE.

v1.0.8 Notes
I added 0-19 on the brightness. This corresponds to the amount of milliamps going to the led. 20 milliamps is what the leds were set to by default, now they are set to 2 by default. You can change this using
echo X > sys/devices/platform/leds-pm8058/leds/button-backlight/brightness
Where X is you would put the level of brightness you want. So if you put 19 then they'd be at regular brightness, 1 would be 2 milliamps, 0 would be off. At the moment the change won't stick. Next time you turn off your screen it will be back to the new default of 2. I plan to add full control of over them with persistent settings.
Awesome, thanks. I hate the bottom leds, I don't like having screen filter or leds hack on all the time.
Giving this a shot today, thanks!
Thanks for the kernel
Hoping someday we can figure out how to adjust them rather then disable completely.
You should post this in kernel manager.

Thanks, I've signed up.
My search button has been having leak issue during reboot I don't care though the lights being on all the time are annoying. Thanks for posting this.

Does this kernel retain all the features of RCmix?
Wilderckw, you should notice it when the phone is booting up the capacitive button leds are off except for the search button is partially lit up due to light leakage.

Yes, I forked github RCMIX repo. So everything is the same except for what I've edited. Any features or bugs in 2.2.3 RCMIX kernel will also exist in this kernel.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have that corrected later tonight.
Okay, I fixed the issue. I apologize for that. I incorrectly included the wrong modules in the zip. The link has been updated in the original post.
Awsome, this is much needed. Thanks downloadin' now.
Could you make the notification light so that it does not stop blinking after 5 minutes? I'd like it to keep blinking until the notification is cleared. Thanks for your work on the kernel.
I don't mind the notification lights also, they aren't like looking at the sun. So leave them in or like mwalt suggested, not timed.
Hey the RCMIX got an update, if your going to work on this kernel, minus well apply your changes to the updated one.
CM7 has an option to change the brightness of the cap lights that I liked on my old phone. I used autobrightness and have the cap lights turn on in low light at varying levels and off when I could see them. Maybe incorporate that?
Also, I like my notification light, but hate that charging takes precedence over a notification. Is there a way to change that?
Thanks for keeping the ReMix kernel alive and furthering it
I love launchers. I love what custom kernels and ROMs can do to your phone. What I want to know; What kernel (if any) and ROM (if any) will make launchers smooth/lag free/fast and extend battery life at the same time. I don't play 3d games and I don't need crazy performance. All I want is for my launcher to be smooth, fast, and lag free and save as much battery as it can while still making the launcher lag free. I don't like sense. I don't like AOSP. or ASOP. Or whatever it is. I like launchers because you can customize it and they just seem better. What do you guys think?
How about a Senseless rom? Check out Scott's Cleanrom with sense removed. Otherwise, I think leedroid tweeks can freeze sense up. Once you have that done, use ADW, GO, etc. Freezing all the sense components frees up ram and processing power, which helps save battery and preserve processing power to keep you launcher smooth.
If you find that you have more power than you need after that, use SetCPU to underclock for more battery, or overclock for even more power. Make sure your rom is based on the 2.17 update too; that really helped the battery out. Using the stock kernel, IMO works best for battery as well.
Since I'm on Hboot 1.5 how do I get the 2.17? Since I already flashed before the update I don't think it will update.
You have to relock the phone "fastboot oem lock" and run the latest Ruu.

Since youll probably miss this if I put it at the very bottom, there is a thread someone started here if you want a bit of inspiration for home screens:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459661
and the official MIUI only homescreen thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990233
The absolute best by a HUGE margin is MIUI, and its features match exactly what you are looking for. It is incredibly smooth and has great battery life with very little running services in the background compared to most of the ROMs out there.
Everyone thinks Eternity is crazy smooth, and it does seem that way. But MIUI puts Eternity to shame on smoothness
Here is what I do to get amazing smoothness and battery life (can also just get the apps and stuff I said and look at screenshots at the bottom):
Install MIUI
Install AnthraX A06 kernel (best one yet, PM someone to get this kernel)
download SysTune. Yes SysTune, not System Tuner Pro or any of that. Needs to be SysTune. This is the best tuning app anyway so you should be using it.
download Launcher Pro (I prefer it, can use whatever but Launcher Pro works very well and it uses the same process as a lot of system stuff which is handy later)
download Script Manager
fin and download the V6 Supercharger script, update 9 RC5.2 (it is downloaded as a .txt file, remove the extension so it becomes a .sh file and put it on your SD card)
run script manager in root mode, run V6 script as su (dont select run on boot). Be sure and integrate it into build.prop I think it is. You will be asked this.
select 1000HP setting (option 9)
dont wipe and restart, go back to the menu and select die-hard + OOM groupings
select "engine flush" (option 18)
select "detailing" (option 19)
select to install the nitro lag nullifier tweak (option 20)
now select the "superclean and restart" (option 30)
once restarted open SysTune and change to OnDemand governor
set minimum speed to 192
set maximum speed to 1404
check "apply on boot" and hit apply
go to the governor tab and change to these:
[*]down_differential - 13
[*]sampling down factor - 4
[*]ignore_nice_load - 0
[*]up_threshold - 92
[*]two_phase_freq - 810000
[*]powersave_bias - 0
[*]sampling_rate - 15000
[*]io_is_busy - 1
select "apply on boot" and hit apply
on the VDD tab select the "-" button at the top 4 times. You can go down more later but for now this is to be safe.
scroll down the list of frequencies and set/make sure the 1.4GHz step is set to "1150000".
Set each of these steps to:
[*]1404000GHz = 1150000
[*]1350000 frequency = 1125000
[*]1296000 frequency = 1100000
[*]1242000 = 1075000
no NOT check apply on boot. Hit apply. After you have been running a couple hours straight on these voltages then come back and check apply on boot. You dont check it right away in case you set something wrong and it causes a crash from too low of voltage
on the miscallaneous tab change both IO schedulers to deadline
set both read ahead values to 2048
check "apply on boot" and hit apply
set:
[*]sched_child_runs_first - 0
[*]sched_compact_yield - 1
[*]sched_latency_ns - 18000000
[*]sched_min_granularity_na - 1500000
[*]sched_wakeup_granularity_na - 3000000
[*]sched_tunable_scaling - 1
[*]sched_nr_migrate - 32
[*]sched_migration_cost - 500000
check "apply on boot" and hit apply
set:
[*]swappiness - 20
[*]dirty_ratio - 95
[*]dirty_background_ratio - 60
[*]dirty_writeback_centiseconds - 000
[*]vfs_cache_pressure - 40
[*]min_free_kb - 34133
[*]min_free_order_shift - 4
[*]oom_dump_tasks - 1
[*]oom_kill_allocating_task - 0
check "apply on boot" and hit apply
in the Renice Process tab:
[*]click on the plus icon and select:
[*]android.process.acore = -15 (this is Launcher Pro, choose your launcher process)
[*]com.amazon.venezia = +15 (if you use and have the Amazon appstore installed)
[*]com.android.mms = -17
[*]com.android.phone = -18
[*]com.facebook.katana = +13 (if you use facebook and once it is installed)
[*]com.google.android.gm = +4
[*]com.teslacoilw.widgetlocker = -8 (if you use widgetlocker. If you dont, why arent you?)
[*]com.touchtype.swiftkey = -20 (if you use Swiftkey. If you dont, why dont you? Ok but select whatever process is for the keyboard you use)
Select any other widgets you use in your launcher and set things like clock widgets to around +5 priority. Contact widgets and stuff like that to around -5 priority
press your menu button and click on "more", select service icon
change your icon or set it to no icon. I dont use an icon
check "apply on boot" and hit apply
lastly:
press menu and go to settings
in the personal tab, select display
make sure auto brightness is on
click on advanced mode
set Sample Interval to either 1 or 2 seconds, I use 2.
change the light levels to "use custom"
light level to dim = 5
click on "edit other levels"
change the lowest 5 settings to be "2" for the buttons
set up your screen levels like this:
[*]30
[*]42
[*]55
[*]67
[*]80
[*]125
[*]165
[*]205
[*]230
[*]255
Set up your brightness levels under the "Lower" area like this:
[*]0
[*]35
[*]50
[*]70
[*]105
[*]350
[*]600
[*]1200
[*]3500
[*]7000
Then click on "Save Settings"
oh and finally, in settings under the launcher category, make sure keep launcher in memory is turned off
Once you have everything going you may want to use that battery calibration script from the same place you downloaded the V6 Supercharger. It is the best calibration you can get.
You may or may not want to install the "super zip" made by il Duce. I like it since it includes an mms.apk file that auto splits messages at 160 characters so texts dont throw and error at you and spaz out when you send a long one. But you dont have to use it if you dont want to. In the current version of the ROM and super zip there are two small bugs where pressing the wifi button in the dropdown menu will cause a reboot and also your time select when setting an alarm is bugged. You can still see when the alarm will be set for it is just slightly harder to set since some of the numbers are covered up by a bad graphic. Other than that, no bugs at all that I can find.
My battery when I barely use my phone has lasted 3 days on one charge. When I do use my phone it easily goes all day long and I still have 30-40% battery by bedtime. If I am going crazy on usage, it still lasts me from when I wake up till I get home from work.
I know that was a HUGE amount of steps and settings and takes a bit of time. But once you know it all you can do it in like 10 minutes and you never need to mess with the stuff again. Trust me when I say the setup is well worth it and nothing even comes close to the smoothness

What Super Zip does:
- ES (MIUIsettings.apk from 12.30 in /data, launcher2.apk from 12.30, SystemUI.apk from 12.16) - Andy Thomson
*note* overscroll actually works fine IF your framework-res.apk OR theme.mtz includes it already
- MiuiCamera.apk from kaos420 - no FCs
- newest market 3.4.4 plus speed hack - me
- newest google defaulted to search button - liquidsolstice
- OLD sprint VVM app (no idea if this will fix anything) - me
- volume+ from 12.30 (long press vol for track skip screen off) - Andy Thomson
- remove debug icon - jdeloach
- remove "no service" when in airplane mode - jdeloach
- kickass d3rp screen transitions - me
- added back in old DSP manager (no FC) - kaos420
- added back in gallery 1.0 (no FC) - miui
- added fixed qHD torch.apk - jdeloach
*note:
you can get better battery life by only maxing your speed at 1.18GHz instead of 1.4GHz
Also by changing your sampling rate in the governor to 25000
and by changing the up_threshold to 95
I included screenshots of my settings so that you can all see them first hand. I normally use a bit lower voltages too but I upped them for these shots to show levels most people have said work well for them. In my battery shot, youll notice today was a light day of usage. I only sent about 100 texts and made 4 or 5 phone calls and didnt play any games today.
1. Thanks a million.
2. I hope you didn't type all that out for that specific post. I hope you copied and pasted.
3. Thanks a billion.
haha I will do this for sure. One thing though, I have a SEIDO 1900mAh 3.7V Li-ion battery. It seems better than stock. Will the battery calibration script work for this battery?
I have been at work since 330am. It is now 130pm. Sent only 50 texts. 1 quick phone calll. I think I got on the internet for 5 minutes. My battery is down to 65%. Is this good?
Up time: 73:08:20
Awake time: 37:28:39
Display 75%
Cell standby 12%
phone idle 10%
voice calls 2%
Android OS 2%
Seems like it shouldn't be down to 65%. But it's better than nothing. It will get me through the day. With very light usage though. I don't usually use it this little.

lol actually I typed it up just for this post, but I needed to anyone since another person was asking me to do it for him too. Now I was able to just link him here and save everything I typed up for future linking to people who want it
Yes the battery calibration will work for any battery on any ROM. It monitors your actual mili voltage level of the battery and gives you precise instructions for how to perfectly calibrate the battery. It also shows you what it is being read as, and what level it should be at perfect calibration so you know how far off you are. Batteries have different capacities but all the batteries for our phones are supposed to be at a certain voltage when full and drain in a certain way as they discharge, this lets you calibrate it perfectly for how it should be
That seems like a bit high idle drain to me. I did that same thing today so far with usage and have been on battery almost as long as you and I am at 86% right now. with the ROM, kernel, and settings I posted.
Those are a lot of steps. I'm a noob still so don't lose this thread. I will most likely need your help at some point. If not, I will still probably have questions. Thanks again. Will post back soon.

~~ Stopped Running ICS!! ~~ (for a Reason)
Hi to everyone,
i just want to tell you about my experiences of the ICS-ROM for the RAZR XT910 GSM-version.
First of all, i think that the ics in todays status is more worth than the "old" 2.3.5-rom.
Yes, there are bugs, but if you don't need some features, you could live with it
So here's my list of bugs found:
sometimes background picture disappears or just show's half (reboot fixes)
the gallery is slow on loading (only first time, but load it... otherwise it could crush)
sent mms were not shown in the messaging history
photo editor crushes lots of times
bluetooth does send data, but still does not recieve nything
the lock screen sometimes can't be unlocked (just use next bug)
you can bypass the lockscreen by pushing the home button
while switching music the standard player crushes
some apps does not work (they aren't made for ics now)
BUT some apps just crush the first time, second try they work
app overview screens can be switched fast, but widget screens are very slow in the menu
flash seems to be unsupported
if you don't work with english language, both are mixed (reboot does not fix)
while tiping a number the background becomes pixelized (reboot fixes)
some widgets can't be added to the homescreen
smart actions crushes (uninstall all updates and reboot fixes the bug - DO NOT UPDATE AGAIN!!)
shows time for + 0:00 timezone
MotoCast appears as test app (seems to be not modified for ICS)
ockscreen crushes several times after pushing power bottun
data error while getting free coins/crystals/bottles in apps
4 software buttons aren't enlighted (sometimes reboot fixes)
market crushes while using it by update-notification of android
But there's not everything bad or bugy. Here are some things that work correctly (for me):
sms sending and receiving
make and take calls
make photographs
alarm function
restore root from previous version with OTA rootkeeper
market
app updates
loading and installing apps
wlan
data networks (GPRS / 3G / HSDPA)
standard browser
downloads via browser
google maps
google+ app
adding gmx-account / sending and receiving mails
taking screenshots by POWER + VOLDOWN
autofocus while taking videos (did not work on 2.3.5)
setting and using smart actions (with nonupdated version)
So i think the main parts of the os are working and it's usefull. i'll run this ics-ota till the official ota will be published.
PS: i'll add some more bugs and working features after longer tests
PPS: Sorry for my bad english
greetings,
Sh4itan
restarted usage of red color.
if anyone else uses this ota you could provide your information about bugs and working features in this post!
2 problems that make me go back to Gingerbread:
- the phone gets to be pretty warm (not hot) and that has some impact on the battery
- sometimes it does not remember wireless passwords and you have to put them in manually

Till now i've not noticed any change in battery life... maybe it's little better, if you don't do very much, but in usage it's the same... Dead after max 14h...
ICS is draining the battery fast if you don't use SetCPU or something like that. It seems to not scale the CPU to the minimum frequency almost permanently when the display is off.
If you use SetCPU you'll see that you can save a lot of battery life when the device is in standby.

There's some weirdness going on with the CPU governors in the ICS leak. It includes the hotplug governor, but default is interactive (which was a firm favourite of mine on single core devices). The second core doesn't seem to be sleeping properly, and the frequency steps seemed a bit large to me.
Oh well, more governors is nice when we can't add more ourselves, eh?

while using AnTuTu CPU Master to set the cpu to scaling variable between 300MHz and 800MHz and deleting/backup some side running bloatware with Titanium Backup ★ root the battery life risen sharply.
While doing some pretty normal stuff like sending sms, using google maps with WLAN and doing research on the internet, my battery has endured two days!
And it's not the RAZR MAXX
Stopped running ICS!!
'cause i realised after every 're'-update (flashed back to 2.3.5 and went to ics again) there appears other bugs...
after third try keyboard stopped working!!!
installing this leak is very unstable and it's pretty sure to get unlogged bugs...
maybe after several try's there could be a 'perfect' working version of ics
but i'll try it no more
now running The Arctic 3.0.5 GSM

And I have problem with camera darkness plus vol up/down buttons not work for zooming (I set them in Advanced Options). Tethering not works too.

Same here..And I don't know why CM touch screen sensitivity always have different 'feel' compared to stock ROM, without notice I'm always touch the screen more tightly to prevent miss touch. I think you guys understand well
Ps. Since this ROM is nearest to official then I'll tell more CM bug:
The bass sound's ugly than stock. You can check with mort player with same equalizer (without DSP mgr of course). Also the equalizer freq change from 5 freq (stock) to 6 freq (CM) and if you slide bass booster on mort, the sound more awkward
Um..oh. Laggy gallery! LOL

Not only for messages but when someone is talking to you in WhatApp and others, with all notifications. I think this is to warn you that something happened when the phone was in standby. It's not a bug imo.
The same thing happens with others CM7 roms that I've tested and the AOSP too.
but until you use them do not light. remember that in another CM7 ROM, this does not happen if I went to Settings-> CyanogenMod-> Interface-> LED Notification, except that in this rom, there is no menu Led Notification
is a very good rom but i have a problem, i test smartass, v2, conservative and never enter in deep sleep always 245mhz (my min frequency).
ps: sorry my bad english.

After two days of usage, I would like to report that this ROM has battery drain issues. Much more than the vo-1 version of CM 7.2
wifi?
Wifi does not work for me. It doesnt scan. When I turn it on in the notifications bar it just turns itself off again after a minute or so.
In the settings the same thing happens. (sometime here it even force-closes)
I found this in the ROM-Thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292):

Wi-Fi works fine, but when you turn it ON you can`t see all points, as on stock FW. You must go to the Wireless setting and insert your password there."
When I tried several times to type in the password and SSID it still didnt connect and just turned wifi off again.
Unfortunaly, this link http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/41455-cyanogenmod-7172-samsung-galaxy-ace/ does not work for some reason. (maybe just my computer...)
just checked, it worked: link is not helpfull
Why there is no rom yet that is able to update itself without entering recovery.
A rom that only needs a reboot to aply the update.
Could a rom not check for commits and replace changed files by it self and ask gently for reboot and do this maybe even by itself by time set by the user.
A rom where you can change whatever you like.
My idea is that there should be a cm rom where you can mod anything by longpressibg on it. Since alot roms come with customizations you might not need.
Imagine longpressing on audiofx option in settings and choose between cm audio fx/ viper/ dolby .... And even combine. Longpressing on performance settings and choose even an app you prefere. Totaly customize the whole settings interface by longpressing on any option and replacing such with options from other custom roms such as pac/rr/aicp/... Mixing them however we like, adding options to settings by toggling a settings icon in setrings menu. Sharing the settingsinterface with people all around the world by simply uploading a backup file created in the settings menu.
Any modification/update could be downloaded as a patch and removed again if you want to go back to stock version without a trace. Without being bloat.
Imagine the phone automaticaly uninstalling unimportant system apps such as calculator or stock music player when those are not used but allways ready to use (such apps would be shown in a separed app drawer and be reinstalled when the user tapps on its icon) and the app being backed up on a folder chosen by the user.
Imagine the stock launcher uninstalls itself when you dont use it but keeps a backup and restores itself when you uninstall your custom launcher.
We would only enter twrp for backups/flashing modems/ bootloaders and kernels.
More rom ideas:
Ram usage/cpu usage of each app shown in recents
Recents order by ramusage/cpu usage
A launcher where you can add screens aound the homescreen and not only left or right of it.
Imagine a invisible fps counter that comes with a kernel tuner that automaticly changes cpu/gpu freq to generate desired fps that you choose. And allot devs told me that is impossible and i think thats stupid because even gltools is able to save the fps as a log and apps are able to read logs so... It is basicly the holy grail idea since it could set cpu gpu so low when you are not gaming. If you leave an intense game It would detect that there is sudden fps increase and throttle cpu down. You could also modify the behaviour of this feature by setting how it should behave at a higher fps on lower cpu scales. For example automaticly limiting max fps to 20 and whike gaming 40.
For amoled screens an app that doesnt only simulate a filter by adding pixles to save battery but also having the function of turning the screen light off by reproducing a black picture on the screen withing fractions of a second and removing it again. This could also interact with the fps settings since it would adapt to the fps of the content. It would also recreat a smoother experience by showing that blackscreen between each frame (the frames would look less lasting because the blackscreen shortens its apearence)
A boot animation that looks like the first bootscreen is part of the animation.
Sound notification when wifi gets critical.
Cpu/heat or ram indicator as led light with pulserate indicating its speed and colour indicating how much cores are in use or how much ram is used combined with cpu indication.
Adaptive amoled backlight keeping energy usage of the screen allways constant. Darker contet brighter but instantly and precise in its function.
