GPS has stopped working - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone have GPS totally die on this phone? This is not another "my GPS is slow" thread. It appears to be broken. GPS has been awesome throughout 8 months of a thousand flashes. Flashed MIUI a couple days ago and it was 5+ minutes to get a lock. Tried Pool Party, never got lock. Tried VGB, same. Flashed back to ED05 stock, Never got a lock after 30+ minutes sitting on my car dash. Put TSM back up, same. I have tried multiple kernals, tried GPS aids (for the first time ever). GPS is gone. I follow all directions for all ROMs and never have major problems. I'm stumped.

I have tried the "secret menu" but it force closes when I enter the GPS config number. Could the hardware itself be fried?

Just out of curiosity, what gps aids have you tried? I just used "fasterfix" for the first time today and that drastically improved my lock time. Also GPS status and calibrate your compas may help. Just some suggestions... I hope either one helps!

I have tried GPS status, even paid for a GPS Doctor repair app. None of them can do anything. Gps status had zero satellites after 2 hours in my car dock. I flashed back to ED05 and tried the Verizon "techs" at my local store. It's sad when I knew more about my phone than they did. In other words, zero help there. Was hoping to wait until spring, but it looks like a Nexus is in my future.

Did you try faster fix? Maybe it will help you get by for the next 6 days? With the way your talking though, it sounds like a hardware issue.

How is your data acting? Is it kinda flaky as well? Maybe you could try logging on vzw website and swapping esn numbers to refresh your data. After several flashes, sometimes I notice data/gps/anything network related will get flaky or slew down dramatically and an esn swap fixes me up. Hope you get back up.
~~~~There is no spoon~~~~
ESN swap, hadn't thought of that. I'll report back, thanks
ESN swap didn't work. Today I went back to eclair and ota'd back to ED05, still no go. It's dead Thanks for the idea though.
Update : GPS is back. Used the RFS formatting utility from the Heinz Dev section on rootz. Installed a froyo based rom, gps is back working.
Well, yeah. Those "techs" at the stores are just salespeople. Call Verizon for actual tech support.
[Q] GPS signal lost on multiple roms
So I've done a lot of searching and haven't really found anything definitive. I've found that with some roms I'll lose GPS signal after a certain amount of time (say 10-30 minutes) and have to turn GPS off and back on or reboot the phone. I saw something about flashing a different radio may make a difference. Kinda just wanted to see other peoples thoughts on the issue or if maybe there is something else I can do before I go flashing a different radio.
Currently running CELB 4.1 and baseband 2.42.01.04.27 and I have the issue.. I've had it with most of Tazz's roms as well. KaosFroyo is the only one Ive used that I've never seen the issue with, but I'm really diggin CELB right now and this is the ONLY issue I've got with it.
Have you tried GPS status in the market? I know it will help you lock in a signal, so it would make sense that it would also help keep your GPS locked in.
I have now.. I did the reset and download options in the program. Too bad this isn't something I can quickly test. I'll report back with the results. Thanks!
I have noticed this as well. Last time it happened to me it was 4:30 in the morning, and the "GPS lost" message came up about 180 seconds before I had to make two freeway changes in an area I'd never been before. (CELB 3.9 and same radio as your case). Fortunately for me I had reviewed the route, so I more or less knew what to do.
If I recall correctly, it has always happened after the Nav app had been running for a fair bit of time - at least 30 minutes or more.
However, I don't know if it is something about the root ROMs or not - I started using rooted ROMs back in March or so, so I really don't have a tremendous operating baseline on stock 2.1 ROMs to compare it to. Maybe it is a problem there, too!
If I recall correctly, the last time it happened, I just pulled up GPS Status and asked it reload the aGPS state (without exiting the Nav app), and the Nav app seemed to gracefully recover.
Annoying? Yeah. I don't know what can be done about it, though - like the "undead calls" problem, it happens so infrequently that it is hard to know whether or not a ROM change actually fixes the problem.
I had the same problem with every 2.2 rom I used GPS with. I decided to go back to 2.1 because I have been needing GPS alot more often lately but I havent tested it out since I made the switch. I'll try it out today and report the results tonight.
This same thing seemed to happen on the 2.1, CyanogenMod 5 based ELB by Conap as well. If it is happening with all of the 2.2 ROMs, I wonder if it's just a CyanogenMod issue?
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6812308#post6812308 (this was not the only person reporting it, if you search that thread.)
I really don't think it's ALL 2.2 CM roms though. I've gone on 7 hour car trips with Kaos Froyo without a single drop.. to and from. I've seen another theory somewhere around here about it being certain hardware revisions that act this way with certain software builds. At lease we've got a thread dedicated to this issue now.. maybe we can get something figured out.
Still don't know if the GPS status program helps.. I left navigation turned on for a bit sitting in my house and it stayed connected for the half an hour I left it, just don't think that's gonna be an accurate test with not moving around and all. If it doesn't work I will try a different radio.. I saw somewhere one guy had good luck with a specific older version radio. If that's what it comes down to I'll try.
I have been having issues with the GPS working on both of my phones while using 2.2 roms. I switched to 2.1 a few days ago and I used the GPS on my way to work this morning and didnt have any issues. I also had to flash Senseable a couple of months ago while on a road trip because I was tired of loosing the GPS signal every half hour. It may be a CM thing.
Im having the same issues as well. Haven't found a fix yet..
I've had this issue, after I flashed KaosFroyo(v36), and XTR(4 i think). I recently unrooted using Flashback21 v1 and flashed with the radio included. I have gone back to xtr 5 now and have had no lost gps in over a week. Don't have a clue as to why. hope it helps someone.
I have flashed the radio directly with the verizon zip file that is around and I still get inconsistent results But it always drops a signal eventually in about a 1/2 hour
I've seen it on several ROM's as well. From what i've messed with, it doesn't seem to be dependent on the autokiller memory preset, radio firmware, or amount of overclocking i'm doing. It doesn't seem to be dependent on how many programs are running either. I usually have nav and pandora running while i'm in the car, and sooner or later, the gps poops out.
I feel like it seems to happen less, now that i'm back to using the on-demand governor. but that could just be in my head.
I've had to go back to a 2.1 rom because of it. Its very annoying when the goa signal gets lost right before the exit ramp.
Im thinking of going back to a 2.1 rom as well...
I have also seen the same results on any 2.2 or higher rom. I have since returned to XTRRom 5.0 and have not had a single problem with GPS on any of my jogging runs. I definitely think it is a CM thing. At least on my phone.
Using kaosfroyo v39 and I flashed that sprint phone radio on my eris and haven't had any gps issues. In fact, just the opposite. Mine would lock up before the v39 and the radio flash
I flashed that radio as well and today not one issue at all. Will test more tomorrow
I'm using the 2.42.02.10.29 sprint radio and still seeing it drop out.
Today I even flashed back to the July 2010 version (2.42.01.04.27). the gps dropped out almost every 5 minutes while i was driving around. that's the worst i've seen. So i flashed back to the 2.42.02.10.29 sprint radio again. I haven't seen very good navigation performance on the v1.1 gingershedbread overall, actually. my position on the gps nav doesn't update very often, although it seemed like the voice instructions were still pretty well timed as usual.
Anyone having GPS issues?
I was driving last night and needed the GPS, I was running BAMF 1.6.1 and the GPS wouldn't lock. I tried apps off the market, had no luck. So I went back to stock and the issue was still there, so i dont believe its a ROM issue...I don't really know what to do and ATM i need to use the GPS lolol so im stuck till i can..if anyone could assist me or point me in the right direction..no pun intended lolol.
GPS is a known issue with the TB. It's been discussed here plenty.
I never had an issue until last night, thought it was odd it was out of the blue. My bad though, tried a search too.
thunderbolt sent, bamf enhanced
Download an app from the Market called "GPS Status". Open the app, go to Menu->Tools->Manage A-GPS state. Hit Reset. Then go to the same place and hit Download.
This has helped a lot of people including me. My GPS wouldn't lock on for a good 2 minutes, now it's instant on.
Starting yesterday, VZW and HTC are rolling out an update that issues out a number of fixes. One of said fixes is the GPS lock issue.
Google VZW Thunderbolt Update and you will see it.
GPS fix for iCS ROM's
After many weeks of GPS not locking, or taking 5 plus minutes to lock on the recent leaked AT&T ICS ROM's I have found the problem. Not everybody has a problem, but many of you do.
No matter what I did, GPS simply wouldn't work. Flashing back to stock, re-flashing several ICS ROM's with complete wipes of the phone including EMMC and SD card did nothing. The last AT&T leak, as well as the official did nothing to fix the problem. As soon as I flashed back to sauROM or any gingerbread ROM, GPS would start working perfect, with 6 second lock, but back to ICS and GPS would quit again. Last week I finally found and fixed the problem. I flashed the radio from the gingerbread bread ROM on several ICS ROM's including the new official, and it's worked perfect for the last week. The UCLF5 leak and the New official AT&T ROM. I'm running Flapjaxxx ROM with no issues. GPS locks in under 10 seconds, LTE here in Tampa, FL signal strength is the same as is LTE giving me 21MB down and 12MB up, on this UCLA1 radio. Just because it's an older radio, doesn't mean performance is effected.
Flash with Odin (I'm using v1.85) Don't unzip/extract and place it in the phone space, NOT PDA
Make sure phone is in download mode and you have the samsung USB drivers installed.
Nice work, The quirky inconsistent ics- GPS behavior is consistent with your discovery. I've had Stellar gps on gingerbread, but i have yet to test the gps with my newly flashed cm9 rom. If i experience the degraded performance being reported, i will give your procedure a go. Thanks for taking the time to shareware your findings.
Having had mostly good but sometimes quirky GPS since running Flapp ROM based off official ICS and having nothing better to do at 1am I gave this a try. I will say that on ICS I had either gotten a quick lock or it would take 15+ seconds to over 5 minutes for a lock and it varied with no pattern I could notice (reboots, charging status, time since last used, etc.). In another post I had noticed that my 'in use' satellites had decreased.
Initial results seem positive. Got more satellites 'in use' according to GPS test (compared to just prior to testing) and locks are back down to a couple seconds. Will be able to try it out again tomorrow after the phone has been on charge all night and I can drive with it. Maybe it's voodoo but If nothing else it doesn't seem to have worsened anything.
Same here! I flashed the GB radio on top of Flapp's ICS official ROM and GPS locks like it did when I was on GB...awesome! This kind of reminds me of my Blackberry days, using different radios and even hybrid ones, lol.
I also claim this as fixing my problem. Thanks @ OP!!
Didn't work for me. I had to flash back to uclf6.
I have tried this on my last note and it did not make any difference. In the mean time at&t replaced my note and this new replacement seems to be working better so far. However, flashing this modem it takes a while to connect to lte network after reboot but once it connects it works fine.
i will report back tommorrow, need more time to test 2.3.6 UCLA1 modem.
after i flashed ucla1 radio, it locks really quick! then again, i always get fast locks after a reboot.
let see if it still fast locks tomorrow without the reboot.
Thanks a lot. I was having GPS issues where the connection time was taking at least 10mins or more and at that rate I'd reach my destination before I'd even get close to a solid lock. With this radio I am now getting 2 to 6 second GPS connections.
Works
I have been using this for a week... Even before the op posted. Locking satellites as it should when I was using ginger bread. No issue so far with xalls, text, or LTE. However, I found that during navigation with google nav, co pilot and waze. The tracking was drifted, lag behind. Not significant but you miss a turn if it freeze at the right moment. I kinda pissed that they screwed up one of the important function of the phone. Iused this daily so kinda frustrated. I meed to send complain to ATT and Samsung. Just wondered if ATT and Samsung are awared of thi issue.
I dot think its the modem I have tried it. I am on the official CM9 and GPS locks within seconds inside my house using the uclf6 modem.
Thanks for the idea, lf5 working great for me.
ParaNOTE Android
Just to verify the GB radio works great paired with Flapps ICS ROM (official), I tested it as I drove around the city today. I was getting instant locks and accuracy within 10'. I honestly get the GPS locks I did on GB! It really works on my device WITHOUT ANY ISSUES and as with all things, ymmv.
Updated Radio and now no GPS
I recently started using my wifes old fascinate after I broke the screen on my Droid Razr. I had rooted it for her in the past and was running AOKP ICS. The phone was performing well but gps tracking seemed to be seriously lacking. So messing around with it I noticed it was running the ED05 radio. I figured i'd upate to EC09 and see if that would improve anything. I used to Odin to flash EC09 rebooted phone and I had nothing 0/0 fix/sats in GPS status. I toggled it on and off and tried resetting GPS data and let it sit for a long time and got no lock.
So I said what the heck I wanted to update to Jellybean so lets flash a new rom and see if the clean install helps. So I flashed hellybean from recovery and the rom runs great but still no GPS. So i'm thinking okay..weird...let's try another radio. Tried flashing EH03 and same issue. So figured i'd flash back to ED05 and hopefully that would do the trick. Well now I'm back on ED05 and the phones been sitting for 10 minutes running GPS status and still hasn't found a single sattelite.
Any ideas of something to try? I use GPS for tracking a lot and really want to get this thing working. I am out of ideas.
Maybe you should try the app GPS Test by Chartcross. Install it, go to settings, and hit Clear AGPS.
Thanks for the feedback. I eventually got it to work and felt like an idiot. The trick? Walk outside...
I did a full factory reset and reflashed hellybean tried some more radios and was about ready to throw the phone at the wall when I said what the heck lets just go outside and see what happens. Walk outside and was locked within 10 seconds.
For some reason the fascinate GPS will just not work sitting on my desk at work. My razr had no issues here so I guess that's why I was expecting it to at least find something. I guess this GPS receiver is just weak.
The wavelength GPS is on has the property of not being able to go through buildings. While this phone's GPS is pretty rotten in this case it's not really Samsung's fault.
Retired Thunderbolt and using the GPS
Have a retired HTC Thunderbolt (S_OFF, Rooted, Liquid smooth ICE Rom) I upgraded to a HTC DNA a week ago. I would like to use the thunderbolt with GPS and Wifi to play Ingress on. The Issue how ever is that after the phone lost its cellular service I cannot get a GPS lock left it on for 4 hours using GPS toolbox waiting for a lock that never happened anyone got any ideas on how to get the GPS to lock with out the aGPS cell service?
I haven't experienced this problem specifically since mine is still in service, but I'm sure someone else more informed will know. I would check and make sure all of the contacts on the back of the case are clean and flush with the phone. Yesterday I had a similar problem and it was because I hadn't snapped the case all the way back on.
In the next few days I should be making a new CM9 build with a kernel that does not have a working radio, but does fix other issues. I'm thinking it will be useful for those in your situation who like AOSP, but don't have a need for the radio any longer. I'll try to remember to let you know when that happens.
Cool I will be looking for it I was thinking about trying a radioless build or regressing the radio RUU to a incomatible with the rom I am using to see if that would work but I didn't know if the GPS chip was on the same chip as the radio.
I just built a fresh CM9 with the non-working radio and tested it. The GPS works without cell service and I was able to get 10 satellites according to GPS Status. The build worked fine as long as I had it installed, but I can't guarantee anything long-term. Worst case you can try the normal CM9 build since the GPS is the same on both of them.
Will ask the obvious did you go under GPS settings and make sure the standalone GPS was checked? If it is then I would say the issue is with that ROM. It sounds like only the verizon gps option is checked as thay uses cell tower triangulation to get a location fix. I never had an issue using GPS on a deactivated phone.
You must have something screwed up, GPS and cellular service have nothing to do with each other. Might want to consider flashing a new rom or something just so you are guaranteed to be using one that fully works with gps 100%
Try to pry up on the little golden tabs under your battery cover. Those are the antenna for the GPS and if they don't make good contact to the battery cover then you won't get a GPS lock. Be very very careful not to break the little tabs.
Sounds like the aosp glitch of a 50/50 chance of having GPS to work. Try flashing a sense ROM then if you get a lock. Flash your aosp ROM and should work.
