S II went belly up - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Galaxy S II won't boot. Recycles through dripping boot screen constantly. Stock battery on or off charger. Won't respond to anything but a battery pull. Removed micro SD and SIM...same result.
Seems as though I could sense something was amiss prior to failure: portrait SWYPE keyboard was flakey, GPS once required a reboot to function, some lag showing up, battery usage rising, etc..
I will see if the local AT&T store will exchange this afternoon (trying to short-circuit the overnight exchange).
Anyone else experience this?

did you root it at all? Try to get into recovery and factory reset the device. Or if you feel up to it, just "return it to sock form" even if you didnt modify it. That will reload any files that might have gotten corrupt.

Nope. No root. Completely stock. I do have the USB jig, but I thought that it just put it into download model, not recovery.
I will probably exchange it because it has a cosmetic ding on a corner where I dropped it.

Did this all happen after you dropped it? I'm curious if the phone is susceptible to malfunctioning after a drop. If so, I'm going to run out and find any sort of case. I saw the video of a GS2 and an iPhone being dropped, so I figured the phone would be fine without a case.

If you're witin 30-day period, you should go to the store where you purchased to exchange for a new phone. Warranty exchange will only send you a refurbished phone (probably one of those from ppl who returned for Skyrockets).

Did it start having issues after you stuck the jig into it? I had a non-recoverable boot loop after I used a jig (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18845154&postcount=55).

Refurbished phones aren't bad. But, I would think you would get a new one. It will take time to process and refurbish the returned ones. Refurbished electronics always have a lower failure rate. They have to pass all the factory QC twice, and I have never seem a phone with a physical blemish make it out the door as a refurbished device. Plus I think there will be an influx of skyrockets for people upgrading to the i777 while in their 30 days. (vs other way around)

BS, I have a refurbished Samsung BlackJack2. It came with something rattle inside. When I requested a warranty exchange for my BlackJack1, it came with a really worn out shape cosmetically. It's a crap shot. Sometimes you get good ones and sometimes you get bad ones.
Just like the new phones OP had. If Samsung can't properly QA new phones, what makes you think it will do a better job QA the refurbished ones.
The original GS2 has been out for over a month. They will have plenty of refurbs for your warranty exchange.

It didn't happen immediately after I dropped. More like 10 days. Don't think the drop had anything to do with it.

It was outside of the 30 day period but AT&T exchanged it for a new S II at lunch today.

Anyone ACTUALLY Warrantied an Unlocked/Re-Locked?

If anyone out there in XDA-land has actually warrantied an unlocked or re-locked phone (in store and/or via the 1-800 number), could you please chime in and post your experience (whether you did store or 800 and what happened).
I realize that it may still be too early to ask this question, because the true kicker is whether someone down the supply chain (in store, then in Verizon, then in HTC) noticed and charged back to your account; as there may not have been enough time for bills to generate after such a chain, but I would love to hear of actual experiences.
If possible, there is no need to report back on Amazon or Best Buy or Guy-On-The-Corner They have different policies. This is a Verizon Corporate inquiry. If anyone sent it back to Verizon, did Verizon ultimately charge you for a new Rezound. Thanks
(I realize there is another thread debating whether or not HTC shares with Verizon, and whether Verizon employees are trained to check. This is not that hypothetical inquiry; I am hoping that only people who ACTUALLY did the swap report in).

This is interesting to me. I'm stuck wanting the "normal", for lack of better words, root and s-off method from the community. I knew that the employees don't care about root as long as they can set it back to stock. That's what I heard from my friend that worked there. I don't know about the HTC unlock though.
I did it with my first rezound. (i baught them at bestbuy for their replacement plan) no questions asked. GIVE ME NEW PHONE, they gave, I was happy.
not that this helps right now, but i should be able to give you an idea in a few days. bought my rezound on the 9th and unlocked and flashed that night, data started not connecting at all on the 13th. called vzw tech support on the 17th telling them what was going on, no mention of whether it was unlocked from either side, got my warranty replacement today. gonna send back the old phone tomorrow.
I had the 'can't charge dead batteries issue' the other night. Went to store and replaced with new battery. No problems.

Well - You did come closest to answering out of all the other responses PLEASE let us know if you ever get billed for it (which can take months).
When I turned my Charge in to Best Buy for the upgrade plan, the dude actually SHOWED OFF to the other folks how modded that thing was, he was in awe. As much flashing I did on that thing, it should have melted. They don't care, or are not paid enough TO care. Never had a problem at the VZW store either, but those guys are usually idiots anyways.
Local best buy for me looked for a superuser app, didn't see it, then exchanged the phone. Had they looked at the bootloader they would have seen the relocked. Bunch of idiots...lol.

While Best Buy is not relevant (they probably have their own policies), that is kind of disturbing. It means they are looking.
Anyone actually do this with *VERIZON*, would love to hear if they ultimately charge you.
I know this is not exactly the same, but I exchanged my old Samsung Fascinate for a Droid Charge under warranty through Verizon. I restored the Fascinate but forgot to restore the kernel. It showed some hacked version under the system settings and was really obvious.
I sent it back and never heard anything about it...
i'm curious, if they do charge wouldn't that mean they should send me the phone that was broken back since in theory i would have purchased the second phone at full price?

YES! That is why I was hoping to hear of people's actual responses with Verizon. Not having much luck with the "actual" or "verizon" part of the inquiry, but it is probably still too early to really know. The phone hasn't been unlocked long enough for people to unlock, decide they need to warranty replace, exchange it with VERIZON, and then get another bill cycle or 2 or 3 to see if they were charged.
... but I keep hoping to hear from anyone who actually warrantied an unlocked phone back to a Verizon corporate store or Verizon 800. As time goes by, maybe we will learn

Please do. I suspect it will take months (has to get from Verizon store to headquarters as part of however often they ship, then Verizon has to batch all their warranty replacements back to HTC {if that's how they do it} however often they ship, then HTC has to notice {if they ever do} and push back {if they ever do}, and the Verizon has take the pushback and bill). I suspect that this can take months, at which point the question will be moot (because it will be as it will be), but it was a pipe dream of mine to see what actually happens, given the amount of guessing going on.

I don't see from a legal standpoint how they can do anything...soon as the phone is in their possession they are taking responsibility for it no? Therefore if it is not covered by HTC for some reason, it would be there fault.

There was a ridiculous number of acknowledgment clicks re voided warranty through the unlock process. I would consider this situation exactly like if you brought a phone to Verizon saying it won't work, and the somewhere down the line someone finds the water sensor tripped. The dude behind the counter at Verizon is not going to know at the time, but as the phone winds its way through the warranty replacement chain, someone will figure it out; and they probably will charge you for your replacement.
No one would be screaming 'illegal' in that case; and I believe the cases are identical.
Please note - I hope this is not the case; I have not unlocked my phone (despite desperately wanting to run Nils' ROM) because I dont have $650 to start again. BUT, I can easily see the parallel here.

I don't know how to feel about that either. When an employee of a cellphone provider looks at the available water marks and SAYS your phone is fine and has not received water damage and they are going to replace it for you...anything found afterwords is Verizon's own fault and they will have to deal with. I actually had apple try and pull that once. Had am iPhone where the wifi card was bad, tech at apple looked at their two water markers and said it was fine, that there was a definite issue and shed replace it. Got a call from apple saying the water marker was tripped and I'd have to pay for the replacement. I told them exactly what happened and they left me alone real quick.

The initial person (counter at the store) will be irrelevant, and if people turn in Re-Locked phones, will they ultimately get charged by Verizon EXACTLY the way Apple proceeded with you.

AT&T warranty service

Has anyone experienced AT&T warranty service? Due to a problem with the camera, they said they would ship a refurbished device. Has anyone experienced a refurbished device? I'm wondering if it would be better to send it to Samsung so they repair it?
the at&t warranty service is pretty good, the phone is pretty much brand new and in perfect working condition most of the time. I personally prefer the warranty service over a repair from samsung
I'll have to find out how long I have before they expect my device to ship back to them. I'd like to run it through the paces first for a week or so..
I've not had to have my SGSII replaced, but I did have to replace the Captivate due to random shutdowns. The replacement refurbished phone is still going strong and has never had a problem. It looked like brand new when it came. It's the wife's now, since last October.
Well, I've had to replace mine twice. First one had an issue with the USB port, they sent me what appeared to be a "new" device; that is, it had a full sticker under the battery, and all the warning plastics were on it, but it came in an envelope. I warranty'd that one because the headphone jack died after a week.
The second one is a normal refurb unit. Have not had any issues with the second refurb, and that was almost two months ago.
Had to replace 2 infuses, tho one was insurance, and one GSII. Warranty's were due to the stupid USB port issue, wonder if they fixed that in newer phones?

I have three things refurbished, a Canon camera and printer, then this phone. So far only the phone has ever had a problem, but it was easy to get it fixed, so no big deal. I personally like to buy refurbished things, but I will only buy the ones with warranties.

I called ATT first too see what options I would have, they offered to replace my refurbished i777 with skyrocket but I have to pay the difference. I didn't take that of course, then I think it was ATT suggested me to call Samsung, I might have gotten the idea my own, don't remember much about this part. then sent the phone to Texas and tracked the update on my phone everyday nervously cus my phone was root then restored to stock, afraid that Samsug might find out. But I guess they didn't. got my i777 back in 2 weeks. Since then flash and reflash like an addict, and nothing is wrong with this phone so far.

I prefer Samsung repair over getting an AT&T refurbished device; I've had bad experiences in the past with refurbished quality. It was a while ago, so other's opinions about refurbished service may be more accurate. I'll always prefer Samsung over AT&T though.
Funny this thread came up. The power button went out on my phone. Would not work at all. Made it quite difficult to do all the nonsense at&t wanted me to do to "troubleshoot" a hardware problem. Anyways after 3 calls to them in a matter of 12 hours they finally shipped my second replacement that I've had of the S2. What pissed me off is I am currently without a phone and they said it would be 6 days before they got it to be or for 14.95 they would ship it next day. If anything they should be paying me for the fact that I cant use their service but it is what it is. /rant. Can't wait till my phone comes in so I can get some jelly bean going on though.

That's funny because my power button just died too... Except I was able to turn on my phone but that was about it. I couldn't get it to wake up or go to sleep unless I plugged in the phone. I'm debating whether to send it to Samsung or go to the AT&T but if it looks like AT&T is just going to replace it with the Skyrocket, I may just send it in to Samsung. Though 2 weeks without a phone will be crazy =P.

When I spoke to ATT'S warranty people, they mentioned that the refurbished devices are done by the manufacturer. Not sure if that's a bunch of hooey, but I'll give it a shot rather than sending it off to Sammy
To those about to deal with ATT: I spoke to them today and the rep gave me some "good news" that they're out of the S2 but can send me the skyrocket. I said forget it, I'll send it to Samsung. So the rep says hold on, I put it on speaker for a few minutes, and she comes back to tell me she "found" a supposedly new S2 at another warehouse they can ship to me. So refusing the skyrocket is what needs to be done. So now with 14 days to return the device, it gives time to put the replacement through the paces
I just called about the camera not focusing and making that buzz sound. They said the i777 was backordered and would be replaced with a skyrocket. I said no, and asked if I could early upgrade or get anything else. They said no. I asked if a service center might have one, they said they can't verify the stock, but I could try. I really pushed for anything other than the skyrocket, politely, and they said no. It would be free, but my only option. I guess if the service center doesn't have one I'll call back and try again. I really want an S III, in red, but I could live until may when I qualify for upgrade with a One X.

I guess I was lucky. My replacement S2 is supposed to arrive tomorrow. But if they had stonewalled me like that I was prepared to send it to Samsung. Why not go wit that? Btw they also offered to allow me out of the contract early with an S3,but at $299...a little too much imo

I warranty replaced mine because of a wonky power button, too. it is challenging to get back to stock without a power button.

My power button stopped working and after finally getting back to stock with difficulty, I took it in to AT&T's Device Warranty Service Center (they have a few of those in most states) and they replaced it on the spot with a refurbished unit. This was yesterday so only time will tell if the refurbished one will hold up.

I've heard that the refurbs are sometimes more reliable than ones out of the box because they have replaced parts that they know people have had regular problems with (i.e. usb port, power button). I bought mine brand new last December with no problems, so I hope I didn't just jinx myself for saying that.

warranty exchange?

Hi all,
My Rezound has a problem with the microphone where no one can hear me unless I use my bluetooth. Ive dealt with it a while but now it's just frustrating to have to yell at my phone.
I want to call verizon and get a warranty exchange...either for a rezound or a different phone, but my phone is rooted. It is NOT SOFF, and has Nils Business Sense on it.
When I called verizon they said I needed to be off the phone so they could do some "damage checks" to the phone. I assume that means they'll check to see what rom/firmware it is running.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to successfully warranty exchange...I've read on here of several people returning SEVERAL rooted rezounds with issues...I'm just trying to figure out what the secret is before I return mine.

Tell them it died? Airplane mode? They won't check it once you send it in. There is another recent thread about this here somewhere...
You can send it back without problems. Once I sent back a rooted CM9 GNex and I never got billed

yep, this is what they do with them.
just ruu to the global release and send it back. im on my third now.
Do they mind if the phone has minor scratches on the housing (all just superficial), or is that considered physical damage?

as long as its "normal ware" then its ok. if the glass is destroyed or its missing a bunch of paint then they wont take it.

[Q] returning phone - can't access screen - wipe possible?

i have to return to asurion my lte today. the screen only shows colorful 'snow' (like tv's show in black and white when you go to a dead channel), but i know the phone still works because i could answer it by swiping the correct way when people call.
i'm obviously going to pull the sd card, but is there a way i can get into it and wipe anything else? should i?
and at this point i'm most likely not going to s-on/unroot since it has to go back today, but is that going to be an issue now that i have the new one? will i be hit w any charges or made to pay for the new phone outright?

i dropped it awhile back and cracked the screen. it had zero effect on anything. the 'snow' screen is most likely a hardware issue, but no one will budge an inch because of it being a preexisting condition, if you will.
it definitely has to go back, and that leads me back to my original questions. am i going to catch any ish for it being s-off/rooted and having gotten an insuranced refurb replacement and can i do anything about it if i can't access the phone through the screen?

NO, you are fine. Insurance is not warranty so you are fine. If you are worried about personal info on phone I would smash it with a hammer before you send it off.
I sent my original evo (rooted,s-off) back to assurion w/o problems. Other than Walmart assurion's cheaper with a lower deductable, and it takes a week to get a phone out of them, lol. But they come thru eventually. Next time I'd suggest "loosing" it, if needs replacement. Then there's NO worries. Good Luck!

biker, although this probably won't help, scenarios like this are why I paid the $5 for Cerberus. You could wipe it remotely, even with a dead screen, as long as you have a connection to it. Just food for thought.

Warranty Replacement due to Camera issue advice

So I have the purple camera issue (like everyone else apparently) and I'm wondering a few things.
First off is it worth it to go through AT&T for a replacement? I have been reading that people are getting Phones back that are in poor shape, and not only that but the issue is recurring in the replacement phones as well.
Secondly I am assuming I will need to relock my bootloader and un root my phone to send it back, correct? My concern is if I get a replacement phone with 4.3 already installed am I limited in my ability to root/s-off, etc?
Third, am I maybe better off sucking it up and sending to HTC and losing my phone for a week? If I do that do I need to relock/clear/etc?

I'd say it's worth a shot. The worst thing that can happen, is you receive an unsatisfactory replacement device (whether it be too used/damaged for your tastes, or has a purple camera.) You can simply return it in this case, letting AT&T know that you aren't satisfied with the replacement.
I had my One replaced via warranty, and really lucked out, as it would seem I received a brand new One in return (still had the grey IMEI decal and AT&T "DON'T TXT & DRIVE" plastic wrap on it.) The camera sensor date is 5-22, but I've yet to encounter any purple with the camera, thankfully. My defective One had a 5-01 sensor date, and the purple was awful, showing up even in well-lit pictures.
IF YOU GO THIS ROUTE!!! Pay for tracking and insurance at USPS when you return the device with the prepaid postage label and packaging. This is for your peace of mind. AT&T handles warranty returns through a third party called SmartLabel/Newgistics, and there are quite a number of complaints about this company.
My complaint? The tracking number assigned to my return package was "not found" via their tracking site until nearly 3 weeks had passed. During this time, I was getting e-mails and phone calls from AT&T, warning me that they had not received my device, and that I'd be charged up to $900 if I didn't return it within 10 days. Apparently, Newgistics just sits on the package in a queue until they decide to attend to it. That's a really ****ty feeling to have looming over your head for 3 weeks -- thinking your phone was either lost or stolen -- and it can be avoided if you just cough up 5 bucks for tracking and insurance at the post office.
Also, one last tip, if you're concerned your device may be considered "damaged" (AT&T doesn't offer a warranty replacement for damaged phones, and will make you pay for the replacement.) Bring your phone to any AT&T location, tell them you're interested in getting a warranty replacement, and have them inspect your phone. They can put a note on your account that the phone is not damaged. Of course, this is different from water damage, which they cannot determine (due to the sealed construction) until you mail it in

Thanks for the reply. Was your device rooted or did you clear all that before sending it?
Sorry, forgot to address that. My device wasn't rooted, but it was unlocked and S-OFF'd with the GPE CID. Before sending it back, I changed the CID back to the AT&T-appropriate one (something like CWS__001) and restored via the stock Android 4.3/Sense 5.0 RUU. I did not relock or S-ON the device. They haven't yet received my return, however. From what I've read of AT&T's warranty department (regarding other Android phones,) they don't seem to care/notice what has been done, so long as the stock OS/firmware is present, and appears to be stock.

I would recommend you attempt to unroot and restore the phone as much as possible before sending it in, though! My above post should not be interpreted as a guarantee that they will accept a rooted/tampered phone.

Yeah once I root the new one and copy my data and stuff over I will do the best to relock up the old one.
Purple Tint Also
Hi everyone,
I also have this purple tint issue. I have had the phone since 7/10/13, and I keep thinking that the next software update will fix the camera issue. I was hoping 4.3 would fix it, nope. Now i'm hoping for 4.4 but I am thinking it will not do anything. I was going to wait until the 4.4 update comes out to see if this will fix it or not.
I purchased my AT&T HTC One from Best Buy. Would I have to go through HTC to replace it with the warranty or could I go through AT&T? Would you suggest one over another? Also, would they give me a hassle about replacing it because of this camera issue by like trying to say it's not their fault?
This will be the first time that I have had to replace a phone. Do I have to send it in and then I will be without a phone while they replace it or will they send me a replacement, then I send my phone to them?

I would probably go into an ATT store and see if they can exchange it out right there. I would think, if you have your receipt they would. If not, I would then head into best buy and have them do it. You have one year warranty. I bought mine through att and just went in last week to exchange it, and the gal actually did it right there and loaded the info on the new one, however it was the 32 gb model, and I own a 64gb model. She had to place a order for another one which was sent to me FedEx.
I just go it yesterday, took only 3 days shipping, and now I have 10 days to put my old one in the box and get it shipped back to them. Pretty simple and painless really. I haven't turned the new one on yet, my initial observation looks pretty much identical to my old one, with no physical defects of the new (refurbished) unit.
I just hope the innards are just as pristine as mine was. I also relocked it, s-on, unrooted and restored att software to it. Didn't want to take the chance of some crap coming back on me.

In my case (blown speaker), I had to go to a special warranty store. They wouldnt replace it at a normal store for me. But the device service center or whatever it was did replace mine on the spot with no shipping, so that was a plus even if the drive was a bit out of the way.
I suppose I got lucky as well as I'd never heard of this purple camera issue and while I'm sure this phone isn't brand new, its been working alright. I've had terrible luck with the One, with this being my third replacement.

Anyways got the new one back hoping for the camera to magically be better..it isn't. Still junk lol. Semi sharp and tons of noise in the picture. As soon as you zoom in for detail BAM noise. It is a phone camera and hey, at least it doesn't go purple anymore right? Oh my phone was in like new condition when it came, zero scratches (or it would have been sent right back to them).

Okay so I just talked to AT&T and after some troubleshooting to prove it wasn't software related, they just placed an order for a "refurbished" device that I should get in 5-6 business days. Hopefully the camera works and all of the pixels are there too!
