Hey all, to start off I want to point out that I've done my research on the pentile display, and the way it handles lighting by replacing some of the pixels with white ones to make it brighter.
It obviously has an issues handling "normal avi's" especially when it comes to black crush (crappy detail for shadows/dark during video playback).
When playing the same video side-by-side with my nook color, I've found that the atrix seems to be a bit more saturated... (sample image below... sorry for the crap quality, but I think it gets my point across)
so my question is, is there any way to get rid of the black crush and change saturation levels on the screen of the atrix? I'm currently running stock 2.3.4. Do any other roms have a fix for this?
(as a sidenote, my phone options were either the atrix or the gs2, and both suffer from black crush... sort of disappointing considering the price tags of both machines...)
Which video player are you using, and is it the same one on both devices?

I'm using MX video player on both. I've tried a bunch of players... same result. Even the stock player seems to have the problem... so I think I'm just stuck with it.
My Atrix 4G compared to my GTab Tablet looks pretty much equal in color representation, being the Atrix 4G more natural and bright. I'm too using MX Player (at max brightness btw)
Anyhoo, I rather have my Atrix's Pentile screen than any of the oversaturated/overrated Super Amoled (+) displays that tend to burn-in quite fast with moderate to heavy use.
Cheers!

thanks for adressing that... but does the gtab suffer from black crush? :/ that's the only thing that turns me off about the atrix.. video playback.

I don't watch Netflix on my phones that much, but i was bored today on lunch and decided to watch a Doctor Who episode. I noticed that the video playback was very dark and grainy (brightness all the way up). I'm sure others have noticed this as well but i couldn't find any posts about it. I know that the phone is capable of 1080p playback so i fired up an HQ youtube video and it looked anything but high quality. The pentile display could be the culprit in this case, but it seems like it would be the gpu because it still seems like the resolution is low. Thoughts? Comments?
Hd on my phone looks great. I won't deny the pentile display leaves a lot to be desired, but not on pictures and videos. At least for me.

The graniness during playback is a negative characteristic of the pentile display that some people notice and others don't. The graniness is greatly reduced (even eliminated) when you turn the brightness down. I would recommend turning the brightness down to the lowest setting. The photon's display is so bright that you will probably never need to turn it up.
I noticed the dark grainy too, I thought it was just the program I was watching.

I've tried that and the quality was a bit better, however the contrast ratio on this phone is so great that the darks are dark as hell. I don't notice the pentile "screen door effect" unless i am looking for it, or if it catches my eye for a split second. Oh well, i still love the phone, i guess the Iphone's retina display spoiled me.
I dont think its the videos or the software playing the video. Its the Display Technology Moto chose to run with. Ive been on 30+ android / windows mobile / ios phones and this phone has the worse Display I have ever seen.
Its great that the display is in QHD res but the colors are awful on this phone. Coming from Evo 3D / Nexus 4G those 2 phones alone have bright colors. Especially the Nexus since it uses a AMOLED screen.
The photon is a GREAT phone but the display is just crazy bad. All my pictures / videos don't have enough color to them which then give it that grainy look. Shouldn't have to turn brightness down but even while doing that, there is still grainy picture.
Ima hold on to the photon for a lil while longer and then might jump to GSII.

Oh boy, i think i can smell whats coming... sorry for starting Display War II.
The blacks being to dark is black crush. This can be fixed with software. Hopefully something like voodoo will come out to allow us to make these changes.
Also note that display also has white sub pixels in addition to RGB which is supposed to increase the perception of brightness without being brighter. At least that is what i understood.
Last note when watching netflix, 4g and wifi seem best. Not sure if the limited 3g bandwith could be lacking the addition black information making the blacks crush.

Black Crush. That is exactly what it is. Everything else in this phone is near perfect. GPS locks in seconds. Speaker for music is loud and clear. Camera takes beautiful pictures. The camcorder is beautiful also at 720p 30 frames per sec. Phone is beast. Only draw back i see is the display BUT phone is nice and bright while outside in direct sunlight. As for the display i guess thats when DLNA and Micro HDMI come in LOLOL.
With the significant drop of SuperAMOLED quality control or just plain bad luck on my end I've decided to call it quits and look at other screen technologies and suffice to say the rumored Tab 11.6 is peaking my interest and probably that device will come with PLS.
I've had a chance to compare the Tab10.1 and Ipad2 but I really didn't do so extensively, I was comparing the TF201 , Ipad2 and Tab7.7 and after a lot of testing I've concluded that SuperAMOLED only offers better blacks, the rest is just a subjective preference like color saturation, even viewing angles are superior on the TF201 and Ipad2.
My primary usage is video playback then web browsing, Im also particular with white tones across all brightness levels and with my current Tab7.7 the white tones at low brightness are just horrible compared to the TF201, Tab10.1 and Ipad2
Anyone with extended experience on the said devices can share their opinions between the PLS on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs the IPS on the Ipad2 or TF201?
BUMP for my post, how does the Tab 10.1's screen perform in terms of movie viewing?

Pretty good when the brightness is turned all the way up, This being on Dice Player @ 255/255, Better contrast and color, I think Bravia engine can be added to enhance the colors.

about 95% of the time I use the device at the bed room, so 0-33% brightness might be up my alley. When you say better contrast and color is that in comparison to the Ipad2 screen ?

I watch a lot of series and some movies on my Tab while in bed and imo it's pretty great (especially when they're 720p ). It's almost always at night so no problems with the sun shining on the screen though. With the sun shining directly on the screen, I doubt you could really enjoy any movie ...
I have my brightness set somewhere between 50-100/255 on Dice Player, depending on the movie and if I have any lights on in the room.

Yeah around daytime it's best on 255 but around night time I keep it to 150 or such, any higher at night is like an alien abduction
Hmm on a superamoled screen i keep it at 46 only. But that doesnt really matter as long as the whites in web pages remain white unlile oled.

Strange, it shows the same color for me both on computer and on the tablet. I *did* have the "white xda" problem in the past though, both on my desktop, laptop and tablet. Thought it had something to do with a faulty .css or something similar though, haven't seen it in a long while now.
What I mean is on low brightness levels the white tones on the SuperAMOLED screen becomes either grainy or may turn into yellowish, pinkish or blueish depending on the the screen you've got. Though movie quality is great I also noticed it makes an actual scene darker crushing detail.. Samsung tried to fix this with a different gamma profile on the Galaxy Note but it ends up giving blocky blacks.
I've come across a store demo unit and sadly I cant transfer over my media files, BT just takes to long and the Tab10.1 has no wifi direct.
Is backlight bleeding a common issue on the pls screen?

PLS is plane line switching where as ips is in plane switching. The only difference between the Displays is the light thourough put is higher in Pls that ips hence the more vibrant colors and brighter backlight

Xperia has a nice HD screen..
Both units are at full brightness.
angles on the samsung is much much better..
Blacks are better...
i will do a comparison with Iphone 4S later on...

anyone have this kind of results???

No. I'm glad the Sony uses a more natural-colored LCD screen than the day-glo, turqoise-tinted AMOLED of Samsung.
any video footage of these phones running side by side?
haha I think my friend you're dreaming that Samsung Display kicks Sony's Ass, I compared the two displays and XPS Display is more vibrant in colours and it's very nice to look onto.
My opinion is...
Samsung Amoled Plus display on SGS2
Pros:
- Best contrast
- Beter viewing angles
- True black
Cons:
- Too much color saturation
- Yellow tinting problem
- Too low resolution for such a big display (217 ppi)
Sony Bravia HD display on Xperia S
Pros:
- More natural colors
- Razor sharp definition (342 ppi)
- Very good contrast
Cons:
- I feel whites are slightly on the yellow side
- Poor viewing angles (although better than many LCDs, but behind IPS displays)
Everyone just choose your poison
I still can't find the perfect LCD..... although for me IPS is the closest so far, if HTC One S had SLCD2 I'd probably have waited for it.
honestly, I don't understand why everyone is complaining about poor viewing angle, its your phone, think of the viewing angle as a benefit for more privacy.

Maybe I don't have anything to hide in my phone, but it bothers me more the fact that tilting the phone a few degrees can change the colors than someone trying to watch my screen
super amoled is good but samsung is like a toy or cartoons and its UI..XPS is HD the best resolution display on market today besting iP4s and GNEX..sound quality is 100times better than on samsung especially when using headset its same level as beats audio.the UI is refined and it looks formal/professional like iphone has...viewing angle is not a big issue, im not using my phone at side ways anyway hehehe..Build quality is superb its not wide so it fits in hand comfortably not like other phones. NFC smart tags rocks and sony made a good one with this making the NFC useful in other ways..

Yeah! Me too, viewing angle isn't a big issue, we don't need it every time.
But now we can see the White Magic display on Xperia P is very good!
In future that'll come with all Sony's phones ?

Well after using the phone for a week now I find the discussion about viewing angles in my perspective a non issue...
Sent from my Sony Xperia S (LT26i)
I dunno,
I don't ever look at my phone from an angle, nor do I have people gather around my phone to watch a video. We have TV's and movie theaters for that.
I couldn't care less about viewing my phone from the side.
I agree viewing angle is not an issue on the XS. My experience having both the galaxy s2 and XS is that the screen on the XS is significantly better than the galaxy. The clarity of fonts is exceptional, and the outdoor performance in sunlight is also much better. The S2 is terrible in sunlight, and only really came into it's own watching videos in a dimly lit room.
I think this video will have a clear view on which screen is better..
http://youtu.be/L7KPTYPpOVU
Arc S and SGS 2
View angle is not too bad in XS but i not fancy whether someone sitting next to me in the meeting, reading my confidencial mgs with my girlfriend " talking about last night " better if the viewing angle are not that great
Is it ?
I dont have an issue with viewing angels.
Besides that, i don't like the oversaturation on those AMOLED screens.
Colors are just way to vibrant.
And another thing, XS is alot better viewable in sunlight.
I like the deep blacks with an AMOLED display but aside fromt that i couldn't really give a monkeys toss about viewing angles. Have to say i'm impressed by how well the Xperia S screen fares out in the open and in direct sunlight.
This XPS is such a premium device, great built/design and at last a android phone which has better Display than that retina display of iPhone, superb camera, great audio output both on speaker and headset, and i think the best UI for android phone very impressive and smooth UI and animations..
Got the Samsung GS2 and Sony Xp S. strange that i see sony S screen beets S2 in many ways, even my friends agree with me , like if amoled not that big deal after all, cos LCD still can handel it !! Nd HTC Sensation Xe screen is no mach for the xperia S!!
I think ppl should see both in real eyes not from recording via youtube !!!
try to take some sampels and post them !
Does anyone have a recommendation of a Youtube video that would be good for testing the screen on a phone?
I'm thinking of waiting until the S3 comes out so I can compare the screens side by side, but I'm guessing most stores aren't going to let me bring in my own SD card with a test video on it.
I'm wanting a HD video that shows off skin tone, color saturation, and blacks so I can decide for myself which screen looks better.
Batman: The Dark Knight is pretty much the standard go-to for videophiles for showcasing their HDTV's capabilities. Pretty sure you could find an HD clip on YT.
For me, when the screens are close in quality compared to each other, it can be really difficult to see the differences using "movies" unless you're taking screen shots.
I'd recommend you use calibration videos similar to these. These can really highlight the differences in pixel density, pentile, etc.
Hey,
I've just bought a V30 today after my Nexus 5 started to have some issues to hardly use it as a daily driver.
After spending some time on it, I've noticed that the display is quite blured if you look close to it (it can be seen mostly on white backgrounds). It looks like watching a 480p image on a 1080p display in full screen. Everything seems to have lower resolution than it should have (note that I've tried to adjust brightness and resolution but it seems to be hardware related)
Is this normal? Is it like this for all oled displays?
Thank you for your answers

Are you talking about grainy looking? That happens on very white backgrounds in my experience. Shouldn't be blurry though. Any chance you are able to take a picture of what you are talking about specifically

Yes something like grainy, mostly noticeably on 50% brightness and white backgrounds but also on other colours (like there is a another layer between the oled screen and a display). Should I sent it back ?
@Klyno
From what I've read on the matter it seems to be just an inherent "quirk" for the V30s P-OLED display (kind of like the "Blue-shift" effect that happens when viewing the screen at a certain angle and beyond). There was a thread on here somewhere about the display that some people mentioned this. You can try exchanging but I'm not sure it will help. Maybe someone else can chime in ( @ChazzMatt frequents the V30 forums quite often so I'm sure he can direct you to the right thread). Maybe try the display thread under real reviews category
**EDIT** Found the thread:
