Long story short, I had a captivate and I lost it. I now have a vibrant and Ive been using Simply Stock JVT. I just wanted to know if anyone with ATT has any recommendations on the best ROM/MODEM/KERNEL combos to use on the Vib. Thx in adv.
Well I have T-Mobile, however a great ROM that I'm using on my Vibrant is called "MIUI". It is based on android 2.3.7 (gingerbread) and CM7. It is super customizable, clean, fast, and easy to use! Go here to get instructions on flashing it.
I used to go back and forth between different ROM's weekly but after flashing MIUI I will never go back...

I've actually been looking at MIUI. I dont really know much about it. I did try cm7 and I didnt like how stripped down the phone became though. Not being able to use samsung secret codes and such were a deal breaker. Im guessing this is the same type of rom. if im wrong please tell me. i would like to know. thx for responding though!
Not really sure what you mean by "Samsung Secret Codes", however I can tell you that miui surpasses CM7 by a long shot (at least in my opinion). Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. Plus a new update is coming out tomorrow for miui, as it does every Friday!

quick question. does this support front facing camera (just bought one) and how about power button camera hack?
I don't think so, not stand alone stock miui anyways... I believe this thread would be of use to you in getting your ffc camera running on miui: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305975

1) Download ROM Manager (ClockWork Recovery) from the market.
2) Flash Clock Work Recovery
2b) Make a backup
3) Pick a ROM from the BIBLE in the dev section listed under the Clock Work section
4) Download it and move it to the root of the SD card
5) Boot into recovery and Install a ROM from SD
Pretty straight forward if you read thoroughly
I actually just rooted my phone! My first step on track hahaha. Ill look into the other stuff next, perhaps wait till 2.2 roms are made. Im installing mobile ap right now, or at least figuring it out.
from experience i can only comment on eugenes roms. I havent tried bionix.
Eugene if you want something lightly themed with tweaks and TW Launcher go with Eugene's Vibrant9 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743769
If you want something more close to the "vanilla" android which means you wont have samsungs TW stuff go with his hybrid rom here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773018
He did also release a franken-twiz rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784142
for me the franken-twiz rom is too unstable, and some things didn't work for me, like widgets, but it also has some AWESOME features, and is also based on the latest "leaked" firmware JI2.
I use his Vibrant9 with JAC's OCv4 Kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744655) and i LOVE it. very snappy and stable. There is also the "rom bible" here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111 with tons of information, you want to stick with the roms that are "flash-able .zips" IMO
As far as bricking your phone, the vibrant is very hard to fully brick, not saying it is impossible, but its hard, just read through the directions a few times and make sure you are understanding. And like ALex530 said it is up to you to find what you like, that is the beauty of Android.
I personally like Vibrant7 because well I do.
And if you want more battery life, and the touchwiz is not all that great to you, Hybrid R3 makes my battery last on average double than it did with stock or any of Eugene's other ROMs(which i have tried them all, and they all have good points with the exception of the frankin twiz, which he tweeted that he was not going to fix and just base it off a newer leak because of the issues), it basically removes allot of bloat ware(stuff that isn't needed to run the phone) and in return it makes allot less stuff running in the the background, which makes the battery last much longer. You can add stuff back into it, what I use is the TW Hybrid v3, and then I add the Sims and avatar movie back into it. But I liked both of those.
Most importantly if you are not comfortable with android I would stick to flash-able ROMs, the ones that require Odin can cause you problems if you dont know what you are doing. As long as you make a backup of your current ROM, if the flash goes wrong you can just use a Nandroid to restore and try again. I personally have flashed my Vibrant probably 60 times, but I am always trying the new thing, but lately I just use it for a day or so and then I end up going back to the Hybrid build because of the battery Life.
Well i got the whole thing down, i tried all the roms, but honestly there was nothing i really liked or found to my interest. Alot of the skins werent to my liking although i did like Frankin-Twiz, but i found Bionix to be a tad bit ugly in terms of design. Dunno i might wait till 2.2 and see what roms come out then. For now ill just probably stay rooted. I may try the roms out again and look into them more in detail.
I like the TWiz design alot, kinda grew attatched to it, and bionix made me hate it haha. Frankin wasnt bad though. Gotta just try em again.
Edit: Also Hybrid wasn't that bad either, but the TW launcher was still there? Is this to be deleted or should i just be recommended to make the other one my default?

Well I use ADW just for the fact it lets you have two quick launch buttons on the bottom of each screen on each side of the dock button and place which ever short cuts you want there, I put my phone and camera, Kinda like the TW but has 4 , and ADW has the launch dock button and 2 to equal 3 that one gives you allot of options also for themes that are free from the market. Also you can get a program called "Home Switcher" that allows you to change your default really easy and you can try them all. There is pro launcher, which is good too i just like having the quick launch options.

If not, I will like to seek your advice a good ROM that you will recommend newbies to flash.
Thanks!

MIUI or CM 7 but it still in Beta some bugs and no GPS
But there a lots of Great 2.2 Froyo Roms for vibrant
Hope that Helps
If you're a true noob who's not flashed a lot before I would suggest any of the 2.2.1 roms. They are all functional and a bit better than 2.2. The only thing you'll lose is wifi calling which is a huge battery drain anyway.
Right now the gingerbread roms don't have working GPS and require a little bit more experience with flashing.
My teammate and I have the Simply Galaxy/Honey series. 2.8 is very fast and stable and its 2.2.1. Team EDT also puts out quality work and you can always count on their roms to be fast and stable as well.

yah stick with 2.2 or 2.2.1 until u get experienced enough for cm7 or other gb roms! So id listen to explodingboy70
Thanks for all the advice! You are wonderful guys!
One more thing, will Samsung update the vibrant with an official GB rom?
I read that some said it could be done through Kies?

At this point we don't know when and if we're getting an official gingerbread from T-mobile. Samsung released gingerbread for the international version only - the GT-I9000. It is not completely identical to the Vibrant. It's up to the carriers when and if they release it and put their touches on it. Once Samsung releases some source code for Gingerbread, you'll see a huge jump in gingerbread development and improvements in those roms. Until then, stick to 2.2.1 like the others have said. I stick to team whiskey's roms, and every month or so I flash to a gingerbread rom for like a week to get a feel for it, then go back to 2.2.1 since I can't deal with the bugs in our GB roms for too long at once
Hi,
Finally my phone has arrived. Its already on Official 2.2 (I guessed) with Kernel Version 2.6.32.9 with build number FROYO.UVKA6.
If I want to remain like this for now (awaiting the official GB), what are the improvement that I can or should make to the phone with the current config?
eg. Voodoo , Other kernel, modem, rom?
I would give it a few days before you starting flashing etc etc. Get used to the phone with froyo, learns the ins and out of all the settings and stuff, will come in handy when you are ready to start playing.
If you haven't already, you should read the myriad of info in the vibrant bible, focusing on rooting, flashing and the things needed. I def would get a good handle on understanding programs like titanium, busy box and rom manager as all will eventually need to be used in one way shape or form.
To be honest, after my few days of learning the ropes, you should consider after learning the phones ins and outs, using ODIN to get back to 2.1 that normally comes with the vibrant (I am not 100% sure that all vibrants came with 2.1 stock, not sure if yours is the new model or outgoing model), rooting, installing titanium backup, busybox and rom manager and make a NANDROID backup of a nice clean OS so that should you run into issues flashing, you have an emergency back up to fall back on. I just did this over the past 2 days and it was a great learning experience.
I did my first rom flash today and was pretty cool, not as hard as I thought but really teaches you the ins and outs of all this cool stuff.
The ppl here were great in helping me and answering my questions, truly a great community.
My phone came with 2.1, then upgraded to 2.2, rooted and removed all the bloatware and never backed anything up. I then realized after help here, it was better to go back to 2.1, do all the right steps to root, install the right apps above, then make a nice clean emergency backup. It def will save your ass sooner or later.
With regards to changes, with my phone when it was at 2.2, I did alot to help improve battery life, I use a black wallpaper, I only turn on wifi when needed, I don't enable GPS at all. I set brightest via power widget to lowest unless in bright sun at which time, you can easily brighten it, you can change how quickly the screen goes dark, etc etc. There's alot of things you can do but since you just got the phone, you need to see how you're going to use it, in order to customize it.
Just my 2 from a beginner
Samsung won't say when or if a release of gb will actually come to US variants. I emailed them just the other day.
If you can live without GPS, then go with cyanogen mod
Sent from my badass Vibrant
I have been looking for a while and as usual with Samsung/T-Mobile the official word on GB is very deliberately vague.
I've been trying different ROMs and between my wife's Vibrant and mine, I have tried 5 ROMs so far.
Flashing some of the simpler Froyo ROMs is definitely easier and safer then jumping straight to CM7 or MIUI.
I would go with the earlier advice of getting familiar with your phone first and making sure you are comfortable with rebooting in recovery, wipe cache, etc.
One click root, back-up and re-install some apps so you are comfortable with all that.
Once you feel good, then try the simpler ROMs. TeamWhiskey - Nero is the first one I tried and it was easy to install and quite fast.
After that, went with Bionix.
Now I'm running SimpleHoney and on my wife's phone we are running DarkyRom 9.5.
All of these can be flashed through CWM which makes them simpler and safer.
Hope this helps! Enjoy your phone.

Thank you all for the replies. The advice and guidance are really much appreciated.
After one whole day fooling around, I finally managed to Root it and to install Simple Galaxy 2.8. I had some problems initially with the new 3e recovery from froyo causing unable to root problem. But I googled it and managed to workaround it.
I will play with the phone for a few more days before I decide if I want to go for the next level, GB
Go check out EDT's Asgard rom. Pretty slick.
I get my S II tomorrow and I've been looking around alot to see what the best rom out is, but there's loads of roms available.
What I'm asking is instead of spending multiple hours going through every rom to find out whats good, whats peoples favorites or what would you recommend,
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
(These are musts)
I would preferably like things like overclocking stuff that utilizes the dual core 1.2ghz processor.
Any ideas and thanks in advance

One their is no bests rom .
Two read the individual rom threads and make up your own mind.
Three if unable to make up your mind stick with stock .

You should find they come with the phone not the rom .

Firstly sorry for not noticing the many other posts dedicated to this subject.
Secondary, camera etc may come with the phone but it doesn't specifically come with the rom, I have a Xperia Arc at the moment and the freexperia project doesnt have the camera up and running, so I feel like that was a valid question.
All I was asking is what people are using? What you prefer?
Not an index to what you hate and love about every rom

Coming from HTC Desire, I would of asked exactly the same questions. When new ROMS came out on HTC Desire, or the X10, not everything was working right from the start. Even on the ROMS on this phone it seems not everything is working, so surely the question is valid.
most are just themed roms and don't offer much over a rooted and tweaked stock rom.

The most famous roms have all the features your looking for i believe, Better Camera, overclock 1.6 Ghz, Better GPS etc.
But you can't say which one is best cause they all are different in their own way, specially in themes and so on.

@JJEgan, you were right in the other thread... this is getting ridiculous
@OP: there's really not much difference between them. The different ones are probably CM7, MIUI and Oxygen (they're not stable), the rest just have some modifications, and they mostly are stable with everything working. Just see which one has more views and pick one you think you like. Creating a thread like this has absolutely no point, you will get zero information out of it... even if people start answering you, you'll just get a random sample of what some people are using.
Stock
Just root it and add a kernel like niphetamine - get juicedefender too.
Simples.

Villain Rom 2.4.2 best for me. It's based on stock firmware so gps, camera etc is working fine. Browser is laggy though so use Dolphin HD or another one from the market.
You get Villain tweaks too!
Flash the Ninphetamine kernel as its overclocked to 1.6ghz.

I agree with some of the others in this thread, just stock is best. Samsung polished the firmware really well and its amazing. Id say just flash a custom kernel if you want to do extra stuff like oc/uv or something. Really the only time i ever switch from stock is to try CM7 then or something. Other than that imo stock is best.
GS2 is the first phone where stock meet all my needs. Ive played with a couple of different roms and usually something happens after the first week.
Most roms in dev section give you a all in one package. So must of the tweaks that you would normally install manually are already preinstalled. This is the fun part about android with so many choices, try a couple out first and see what fits your needs.
This is a valid question, the more popular the phone the more hours of searching it takes. CM7 is buggy as hell. Stay away. Stick with stock and just flash a kernel. Samsung did a good job actually with this phone, especially with the skinning in my opinion. It amazes me people buy a super specd phone like this the install ROMS that strip the phone of it's power. CM7 is taking way too long honestly and it's absurd how buggy it is at this point in the phones release history.

Just a little rectification for OP and others: CM7 is an unstable nightly build officially, but it's usable. I have it for a week now, and I haven't had any serious problems. It's stable and I can use it just like the stock ROM, with very few limitations. I'm not going back to other roms for now
Leomar's revolution is amazing. Lots of customised stuff.
VillainROM for a stock look which allows for easily added tweaks. Friendly thread as well.
Ninphetamine kernel works great with both roms...

I am using Lite'ning 6.1 with speedmod kernel T32 but it has not BLN so I will change kernel.
For me, the rom is perfect but anyway I have not tried more (in GT-i9000 I tried too much)
Cyanogenmod ofcourse
I dont have a rooted SGS2 but Cyanogenmod is on the vids very good and smooth.
There are a few issues but there are not major bugs.
Only A2DP dont work ... And a few another things !
the girls phone is still stuck on 2.1 (ew)
im looking for something close to stock that is quick, optimized and up to date if possible.
looking for better battery life as well.
i rooted and installed cwm tonight, so its ready to go.
id prefer to keep it with touchwiz as she likes TW.
any ideas on what to look at as a good rom?
she likes landscape mode to reply to texts and stuff, ive seen how some can be buggy with that, so thats a feature i need to work correctly.
is gingerbread out for this phone?
thanks everyone.
We have CyanogenMod for this phone (2.3.7) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061889
Not an official Gingerbread release.
If you want a 2.2, stock-like but tweaked to run smooth phone, I'd go with Bionix; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925548
Do note, it's sort of outdated, because of a bunch of new stuff that's come out. But it's the closest to stock (In the way things run.) It's just been optimized and it's really responsive. It comes with a gingerbread theme, so that's nice.
And you can always update apps and whatnot, install a newer modem, kernel, etc.
I would suggest trigger 3.2 final it is what i am currently running and i havent had any problems with it
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
When it comes to TW roms I found Trigger 3.2 to be very good. Although Bionix is another good choice as well.
However, my favorite rom by far is MIUI. It's based on android 2.3.7 (gingerbread) and CM7. It's super user friendly and one of the best overall built roms I've ever used. Plus it is extremely customizable and smooth. However, it has no app drawer, that's it's flaw. Still you should have your girlfriend look at it and see if she would like it, even though it's not really TW.
Here's a guide to flash it & everything else you'll need to get started... "Guide- Easily Flash MIUI for Vibrant + Themes/Modems/Kernels/ and more!"
Project-V all the way. You won't find a better 2.2 rom
Seeing as its not your phone i wouldn't suggest any 2.3 roms. Even tho they are great and have great devs working on them they still have bugs due to a lack of source code.
