[Q] Unlocking Bootloader - Motorola Photon 4G

I've noticed in numerous threads that when you unlock your bootloader that you will lose your 4G. My question is if I do unlock it, can you ever get 4G back or is it gone for good?
Thanks in advance

It's my understanding that if you revert all your tweaks, and go back to stock, then you'll get 4G connectivity back. But while your bootloader is unlocked, you won't have 4G.
If I'm wrong, dev's and seasoned vets, please correct me

Unlocking bootloader doesn't wipe your settings or anything and to go back to stock all you have to do is flash the recent SBF using RSD lite. I'm new to android and i picked up on the process pretty quickly. QBking77 has some great vids in the dev section that will help a lot.

I unlocked my bootloader today, but now im having problems gaining root acces with the photon. i've rooted my last photon with the one click rooting tool and had sucess, but since unlocking i have no sucess with it.
any ideas?

How do you have 4G with an unlocked bootloader?

I second what KT said. Just because your 4G scans doesn't mean you actually have 4G connection. So go into 4G settings and make sure you have the MAC address and all that other stuff up and running.
As for rooting. Use the Photon-Torpedo method, I've never had an issue with it with my unlocked or locked bootloader. But make sure you know how to use command prompt or it won't work and you'll just wind up pissed off.

i dont have 4g in my area yet, but it still shows my mac address cc-7d-37-24-37-21, so im assuming that i still have 4g.

If you don't have 4G in your area then you aren't able to actually test it. But what it will do is show up addresses and such but just keeps scanning. It doesn't ever actually connect to the network. Thus you don't have 4G.
And on a side note. A lot if people will give you grief about saying you have 4G with an unlocked bootloader. So I would be more Bro careful in the future. Just a friendly bit of advice.

Thanks xTMFxOffshore, the torpedo method was a little bit tricky but i got it to work, and i'll keep that advice handy

Yeah. The torpedo method works great but it does have a weird hiccup issue at the end.

Anytime that you have the 4g radio active, it will show the mac address. The mac address is the unique identifier of your phone, it will never change. If you get connected, you will have an ip address. That one will change at times. If you've got no ip address, you have no 4g connection.

I unlocked my bootloader by going into fastboot and typing fastboot oem unlock, then it asked my to type it with my device id, so i copied the device id so i typed fastboot oem unlock ******** and it worked, it says unlocked and works

I have unlocked my bootloader a few times and i noticed that after the first time of going through this process, i no longer have to do the fastboot commands. All i do is flash pudding and it says unlocked and i'm good to go. I was wondering if this is the same for everyone?

i didn't even have to flash anything when I did mine, I just opened up command prompt and typed fastboot OEM unlock, then repeated it with device id. And it is officially unlocked with no problems other then no 4g connectivity.

Im scared to unlock bootloader again. Second attempt?

So guys I really wanna unlock the bootloader and flash some roms but this is my third atrix. Im using the 14 day grace period very very graciously. Anyways first atrix kept locking up- exchanged. Second one I tried to unlock it with pudding. Did the rsd thing with the. Sbf file and I was doing it. Then toward the end it failed. Complete brick- exchanged.
Anyways is there something else I should do, possibly a different route? Im using an AT&T atrix. Thanks.
Wait for official release and get it officially unlocked?

I think you might have returned the first 2 prematurely.
1st one probably could have factory reset or flashed a new sbf
2nd one was probably a fixable soft brick.
So I'd say you're safe, but up to you as there's always a risk.
Here is what I did.
1. If you were to update to the OTA 4.5.91. Or already on the OTA 4.5.91 you can still unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash pudding only SBF so you can unlock the bootloader. http://diamantephoto.com/fastboot.rar direct link. Flash this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261 Original Post about pudding.
It will go to a text only 14 option screen and say something like boot failed 0x1000. Don't freak out and tell me you bricked you phone blah blah blah. You still have to unlock the bootloader by choosing fastboot from your phone and connecting it to the computer via usb. Make sure you have ADB with fastboot tools installed on you computer.
Open command prompt from you computer and type fastboot oem unlock. It'll display warning about voiding warranty and a unique device id. Type again fastboot oem unlock ############. The # are the unique device numbers. Don't type # it wont work. The instructions are posted on the pudding thread if you would like to read more about it.
Then type fastboot reboot to reboot. Unlock should be displayed on top left of screen and it'll take 5 long mins to boot up.
3.Then you need to install CWM and root.
You'll find instructions in the developers form. But if your lazy here is the CWM link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541 follow the instructions or every time you reboot you will loose CWM. For root there are two available for gingerbread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1140110 I used this one and got root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1138204 I hear this works too.. Haven't tested read the post if you want to use this method.
As always don't blame me for bricking if you happen to do so. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. these are the steps I took to unlock and everything works great. Absolutely no problems with my phone after wards.
One thing unlocking your bootloader will format/erase data. Basically a factory data reset so make sure you backup everything with titanium or you favorite app. I would not restore system apps as i've had a few problems with email and motoblur force closes.

not sure. i got a leaked 4.5.91 build, it's not unlocked (although early beta does). you still have to flash the pudding img yourself.

The returns were genuine. I did a factory reset on the first one and it still kept locking up, on the wake up. Had to pull battery out to turn back on. Multiple times. Second one was a complete brick. I couldn't get into rsd, wouldn't turn on and computer didn't recognize it in any mode. Im pretty familiar with rsd, used it with OG and X but this one got me walking om egg shells.

4.1.83 is a great point to unlock the bootloader. DO NOT install the 4.5.91 OTA udpate, too risky to hard brick if you flashed an sbf. Of course, you don't have to sbf back anymore, but I would steer way clear of that when there are perfectly good options available. Only use customized ones like Kenneth's or the CherryBlur ROM. More will start flowing soon.
So what your advising is not to even unlock it. All I really want is volume wake.

That's the exact opposite of what I'm advising. I knew I was taking some level of risk when I unlocked, but it's a risk well worth taking. Very, very low failure rate. Recoverable. But I can't accept the risk for your phone.

[Q] A little confused on OTA 2.3.4 unlock

I bought the phone a week ago and then it said I had an update so I updated over my wifi connection in the house.
Since I did this do I still use the RSD Lite to unlock the bootloader or is it unlocked already(reading sooo much stuff has confused me)? If I use RSD Lite do I dl the 2.3.4 sbf from the list on here?
I really dont want to brck my phone so any help is appreciated, thanks!
that OTA update will not unlock is the official moto update. Your bootloader is not unlocked unless it says "unlocked" in the top left corner of the screen when you're booting.
Look up "pudding" and use fastboot to unlock the bootloader
edit: you can use rsd if you want. Whatever your preference is.
I currently have no preference because I havent used either, which is easier to use?

Do I really need To Unlock Bootloader?

OK so I have been searching for this and im seeing somethings come up about unlocking bootloader for the photon and that you will lose 4g data. I kind dont want to lol.. But I do want to root the phone and flash some Roms. Do you really need to unlock bootloader to flash roms. Or it depends on the flashable rom that needs to have bootloader unlocked. Im reading about the unlock bootloader and not seeing why I need to do so. Or do you have to do so to flash ANY roms/kernels?
I see in the deve threads about rooting the the photon. looks simple enough which I have rooted others. But just double checking on these methods here. So any advice will be very helpful.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to write to partitions that would normally not be allowed, even with root - like recovery. I think -though I have never done it - that you can use bootstrap recovery and get the same effect, but it is more of a hassle. Personally theres no WiMax near me without a 20 minute drive, then I can only get it if I am standing still and its no faster than 3G....so it was no question for me.
But I think that you can unlock, flash, and relock and some other steps to keep 4G active.
So you really don't need to unlock bootloader? Cause I'm rooting my friends once he gets in . So in trying to get all the info about rooting. But the 4g data connection will be good as the H huspa/3G is different cause its sprint. Just want to make that unlocking the bootloader is not a must do step. And when I root the photon I'm still able to use Rom manager to back up current roms etc.. and boot into recovery to flash any Rom
Inspire4G
You'll have to look at how the bootstrap recovery works - i've never used it. but I think thats the route you need to take.
You can get bootstrap recovery and flash p-roms. They dont require unlocked bootloader.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I think the Laser ROM is the only P-ROM we have isn't it?
Where is that boot scrap at? And I notice not a lot of rons yet for the photon. So most of the roms will or will not need unlocked bootloader. What did u guys do for rooting,.and did you guys use the unlock bootloader.
Cause I seen then the one where u can root with hot the dock using that torpedo set up

Okay, so the Laser ROM which is in the Dev section some place, if you can't find it, I can hunt it down for you is a P-ROM that can be flashed via Boot Strap Recovery and doesn't require an unlocked bootloader.
As for Home Base, Alien, and Star Wars those are full ROM's so you will need to unlock the bootloader for reasons KCarpenter has mentioned.
I personally did the torpedo root method myself, was easy enough if you have a decent understand of command prompt and can follow written instructions, if not, there is also the AIO one click root method that is pretty easy and a lot of people use.
As for unlocking the bootloader, I think there is a thread here, if not, I can post a link that will help.
Also, I included the bootstrap recovery apk in this reply. Hope this helps.
Soon as I get back to my pc I'm thank u and the other member. Where is that aio located so I can that to and yeah I rooted some other stuff before and my inspire.
So might as well do the unlock bootloader and when I do I'll lose the 4g connection but still have 3g though.
What does that boot strap do.and.u need root to load that right..

Bootstrap is pretty much a recovery for a locked bootloader. It works more or less like CWM does on unlocked bootloaders. But...if you're going to unlock, don't worry about Bootstrap, just do the CWM recovery.

No worries Man. If you have any questions, I'll see what I can do to help ya.
awesome deal.. so once I root and then unlock bootloader. Which will allow me to install any roms and have clockwork mod so then I can back up my roms that install.. also where is thread for this where if need to unroot and restore all back to factory like out of the box.
and Im watching that youtube video about AIO root looks simple enough. But also see another video about rooting and unlocking bootloader.. Im still like 50/50 if I should unlock boot loader or not lol
I have been thinking about unlocking the bootloader as well and have chosen not to at this time. This is primarily because there are only 2 custom ROMs in existence for the Photon. We need more ROM choices for me to take the leap even though there is no 4G where I work or where I live.

What roms are you guys you using
I'm on Home Base. V1.5 with the 4.2 update. Do you want the green color scheme from the Alien ROM?
Also. There is an overclock kernal which I run that you nees to be unlocked for. There was a stock file floating around. But just flash the latest SBF file. That SHOULD take you to stock. But you would have to ask in thay specific thread.

[Q] can't SIM unlock

I recently switched from AT&T to T-mobile. The phone however will not allow me to use t-mobile's sim card. The sim unlock code that ATT provided me does not work. I've called ATT and they can't figure it out.
Could the failure to unlock the sim have anything to do with these facts?
At one point I rooted the phone, but then an OTA update broke root
The Flixster app won't play anything because it sees an su binary which still exists but can't be used
Is there some sort of hack I can apply to SIM unlock my phone?
I've heard of considerable number of cases where the unlock code doesn't work because the phone was rooted, so that might very well be it.
I don't know what do you mean by "it broke root" because it seems at least some parts of are still present. If you have the "su" binary in the right directory and it has the right permissions, you can just install Superuser or SuperSU or any other superuser app from the market and you have a working root again. In which case you could also try unrooting (some SU apps support that) and try the unlock code again.

Thanks. Root checker says my phone is not rooted. Another checker app says everything is locked up, but the su binary does happen to still be around.
You are missing the point. Of course any tool out there will say it is not rooted. That is irrelevant.

Yes, I am planning on trying it. I just haven't had time yet. I still wonder if there is a way to carrier-unlock the phone via hacking. I just don't know enough about it to even know what to google for. I will spend some more time searching the internet etc. I know rooting gives access to all files on the phone. I know rooting is different than bootloader unlocking, which allows you to put custom ROMs on. What I don't know, is if the carrier lock is something that is unlocked via bootloader unlock, or if it's something entirely different. Is carrier lock something that is actually outside the phone? Ie no matter how much phone hacking you do, you can't carrier unlock because the carrier lock is something that is actually on the network? Just trying to understand.
I see This a lot. It sounds like a crazy idea because we know entering in the wrong sim unlock code will lock up the phone. Recently I was unlocking a Nokia 920. Paid for the unlock got the code back tried entering it. Said it was wrong. Called blowfish unlocks(the company I use regularly) they told me to keep putting it in until it was supposed to lock up the phone. Believe me I didn't just jump up and do it. But in the end I said screw it. And kept entering it. In the end it unlocked. I'm not saying this is the case with your phone. Just that I've seen it happen.

Took a while, but one option was flashing the Bell Canada radio and then unlocking. That worked. None of the ATT radios worked, but Bell did. This is the bell radio:

If the unlock works, you can flash back to the ATT radio. You can find different versions all over these forums, but the bell one is a huge PITA to find, so enjoy the link and good luck!

I honestly cannot recall. I want to say that I never did a thing to the phone until I had it unlocked, but I'm not sure. Best I can say is try it and you'll find out one way or another.
ah.. it's coming back to me now. I think I put a different radio on the phone awhile back. That's probably what's causing the unlock to not work.
hey tonglebeak, are you saying even though my phone is intended for the US, and the radio is for Bell Canada, I can use it to unlock even while in the US?

Sometimes the allow oem unlock toggle is greyed out for a few days.
For some software channels, there is a delay that starts after connecting the internet.
Also sometimes a factory reset is necessary, then reconnect to internet.
Thanks for the info. I tried the factory reset without any luck. I guess Ill wait a few days and see if it unlocks.
I waited a couple days and OEM unlock toggle worked! I've unlocked the bootloader. Thanks for the help!
