The plan is to choose a ROM which suits your preferences, e.g. no homescreen lag, better camera apk, better access to the CPU. Try a few, I use Villianrom, which suits me really but there are loads more.

your /efs folder is in comparison to apps, data etc. the most important thing to backup since it is the only thing that cannot be restored without a proper backup if it is screwed up by a bad flash. it basically contains your product code, imei and other sensible phone related data. you can backup it easily with hellcat's kTool app from market. For safety reasons you should copy your /efs backup img from your sdcard to your pc afterwards.
Concerning your other questions, just read through the few stickies in the general and android original dev. section. all what you look for is explained there very detailed.

If u rooted with cf kernel n haven't flashed another then yes, up+home+power >back up. Use hellcats k tool to back up efs (its on market or his thread in dev section) titanium back up is the 1st thing that comes up if you search 'titanium' on market the pro version is costs but is worth it.
Seriously tho, if you're new to android and have never rooted, give it a few weeks first otherwise you won't know what is 'better' and if you don't and end up having problems with roms you'll end up crying that you should have got an Iclone.. Just my opinion from observing this forum for a while

hi,this rooting seems pretty confusing as i used to be an iphone user and jailbreaking was simple but this seems to be difficult to follow,ive been looking around the forum for step by step guide on how to install roms etc but just cant find them,would like to test this out to see if it was worth rooting but at the moment its done nothing for me or the phone its just added another few apps,it seems to me like its a lot of hassle to get different roms etc onto the phone & whats radio etc do i need to update other stuff when i try to put roms on & kernels whats that all about ????sorry chaps but im clueless to all this stuff maybe i should have stayed with apple.
and the efs backup has been done with hellcat & when connected to pc there is no backup file on my sd card ??

My advice is to stay away from flashing ROMs, kernels and rooting.
Use it like you used your iPhone, install games and apps from the Android Market and enjoy your phone.
Unless you've seen something you particularly want from any of the above, the risks for you are not worth it.

As far as I can tell, you haven't said how you rooted - looks like you flashed a different, pre-rooted kernel. There's not a big risk staying rooted, just take extra care if you install something and you get a popup on your phone telling you it's asking for root (superuser request).

Of course you can easily completely revert back to your original set-up. For doing that just type *#1234# in your dialer and post here the output. I or someone else can point you to your original rom.
BUT you will never get a taste of in my opinion the greatest advantage of android: it's customability.
I promise you, you won't regret the effort it takes to educate yourself a bit about the basic knowledge you need, to do all the cool stuff which is only possible rooted. It is enough to spend some time to read regulary here on xda and you will see that everything is really not that hard. You don't have to fear, it is almost impossible to brick your phone if you just have a backup of your /efs folder, don't flash the firmware of another device on your phone and don't disconnect your usb cable in the one second a different bootloader gets flashed. I have flashed and hardcore abused my sgs1 more then 500 times (no exaggeration, i am a dev for sgs1 ) and my sgs2 also very often. Everything ( while testing stuff i went through scary errors and a literally death phone more than once) is recoverable except in the three situations i mentioned above. And you can ALWAYS go back to stock later on no matter what you have messed up.
Have a look again at the content of your sdcards (also in folders and subfolders), the efs.img or .tar has to be somewhere there, save it on your pc and the party can be started

And because i am a nice guy and don't want you to go back to apple here my advice for your first custom rom :
1. Follow exactly the instructions there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Take your time to read through, everything is explained very well
2. Then you are ready to flash your first custom rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288850
this is in my opinion the most stable atm. Read through the first posts, download the 2.9 zip from the post, copy it to your internal sd
3. Switch your device off and boot into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, home and power button at the same time until samsung gti9100 appears on the screen (about 5 sec.), then release the three buttons and you are in recovery mode. You can navigate with vol up and vol down and power or home button in the recovery mode. Navigate to "install from sdcard"/"choose zip from sdcard" and then select the file you have downloaded. Confirm and relax. That's all... easy or?

The efs.img is stored where hellcat directed it to, i just didn't remember where. but yes it is the right file.
Yes this is the rom. You will be surprised about the speed difference compared to stock

From now on you can easily forget about kies, roms here will mostly provide newest firmware long before it is out via kies. Also with odin you can always much more comfortable flash the same firmware as comes over kies.
You can flash any rom you want as long as it is for your device (gt i9100).
As i said, take your time and read across the forum and always follow the thread about the rom you run and your knowledge will improve from alone have fun bro

is there anything better looking out there as this rom didnt seem to change much look wise,and what about themes ? can i put them on the phone ?

Hello guys. I'm new to smartphones and Vibrant is my first. I bought one off ebay for $240 and it has Android version 2.1-update1 installed on it. I would like to know if you guys recommend that I ungrade it to Froyo or above. I've heard some bad things about Froyo and wouldnt like to regret doing the update. A ROM is pretty much your OS. All these Froyo ROMs are really good, just know how to flash properly. I STRONGLY suggest you:
1) Consistently backup all your apps with "Titanium Backup" and google, AND make a copy of all your data on your computer.
2) READ, I suggest you read the Bible (it's Stickied at the top) and LEARN before you do ANYTHING.
3) And lastly, when you mess up, as EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE has, you will need to know how to revert back to STOCK firmware.

For some reason Titanium Backup does not work for me. When I run it I get 0 as a number of apps installed and when I click backup all apps and system files it immediately says backup completed. I've been using the Flii Backup. Is that okay? How do I copy all the stuff to my PC? Thank you for all the info.
Also, should I go with the 2.3 Gingerbread version instead?

when you open Titanium Backup, does it say that it has been granted SU permissions?
If it does, then we're good so far. I've had that happen when I first used TiB on my hubby's phone. The way I got over that was to hit the menu button and select "Batch". You should now be on the Batch Backup/Restore - ALL page. From there, I selected RUN for "Backup all user apps + system data". That should force TiB to go ahead and make the backups.
Now, as for copying the files over onto your PC, just use plug in your USB cable and connect it to your PC. Your phone should emit a little tone or vibrate after this (or at least mine does but it's been a long time since I've used stock). From there, slide down your notifications bar (slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of it) and you should see a note telling you that your USB is connected and if you hit that, it will ask you if you would like to mount your SD card (or something similar to that). Select "yes" and your PC will ask you if you want to open these "drives". Select "yes" again and now you will be able to explore the files on your phone the same way you'd do it on your PC.
As for the whole copy+paste thing, the files work the same as if you're copying files around your PC. Generally, I keep multiple backups on my PC, so it might be a smart idea to label your Titanium Backup file with name or date (ie: Titanium Backup - Stock JFD or Titanium Backup - ROMname blahKernel).
Afaik, we don't have a stable Gingerbread ROM yet but I think our devs are getting pretty close. However, we have several stable Froyo ROMs available in the Android Dev section.

Yes. It seems to work now. I've used the Clockwork Recovery app and did backup through it. Would that be enough? Where is the Android Dev section? What do I do next? Thank you.

Welcome! And yes you should definitely update to Froyo, or a rom based on Froyo. I'm not sure what you heard that soured your opinion of Froyo...but it is a noticeable performance upgrade! It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler was introduced with 2.2 (someone fact check me pls) which should improve java performance multiple times.
I recommend Bionix-V 1.21 for a custom ROM made especially for the Vibrant. It's extremely fast and the community is friendly, helpful, and most importantly VERY active. I linked you to a guide that should answer any questions you might have regarding the rom, and android in general.

Update: Ok, guys. I went to this link and got the Axura 2.3.1.0 installed with the use of this video, which is very useful and I was able to perform this flash flawlessly.
Anyway, The ROM is really responsive and I have only found one flaw, which is that the Fast Web Install app does not work on it. I get the message that they are working on it. Also, the Titanium Backup did not back up anything. All was backed up by the ROM Manager and the Flii Backup.
This ROM has impressed me with its responsiveness. It seems like a high-quality ROM and this is the first time I did the flash, so I'm not familiar with other ROMs. However, this ROM seems like a good pick for now at least. Can you guys advise me where I can sign up for notifications about the Axura updates? Any further suggestions? I appreciate your precious time.
In the Questions and Answers section, at the top, there is a NOOB guide... I would HIGHLY suggest reading it. It explains just about EVERYTHING you could want to do to your new phone!
As far as your next mod... start customizing your phone! Go to the Theme section of the forum and browse around for some custom battery mods and framework mods. It's CRAZY amazing how customizable these phones are!
I used to use the ROM's on here, but since Froyo came out, I'm sticking with a deodexed stock of KB1 (the latest and greatest update). That allows me to modify my framework and all the phone images without having to worry about screwing up one of the custom ROMs out there. I always feel safer with stock... plus root of course. Replaced my boot and shutdown animations with custom ones I created... don't have them posted on here as they are made specifically for my band and noone here would want them!
Keep your contacts synced to google so you don't lose them, backup with Titanium every once in a while to keep your game data and app data up to date, keep reading on here about modding, you could start reading the google developers website to learn about the inner workings of Android and how to write programs... so much to do and so little time in life!!!

I use the stock firmware, rom etc...
I downloaded the titanium backup app from the market but it seems that it doesnt work.
What would be the best backup program to dl for the stock tab? (free or not)
How does it work, what and where does it save ? only apps, or all my files (pictures, favorites, widgets etc)
I also read quite a few times, put this on ur sd card, save that to your sd card.
Well i don have any sd card for my tab, i use my pc and my external hd for my storage.
So if one day i decide to try a new firmware or rom or whatever the way it work, can i do it without a sd card ?
About the changes of firmware and roms, i read a bit about it but im not quite sure i understand everything, plus i saw so many thread about peoples that have problems after doing it that i a bit affraid.
I saw one popular firmware that seems to be working great : in paris v4

You need to be rooted for titanium to work.
Your 16gb capacity is your SD card on the tab.
Install cwm (see thread here or use overcome thread/guide) and you will gain root and the cwm menu to flash custom roms. The nandroid recovery menu will let you install a zip but cwm will give added options and root.

Im actually a noob with the android world but not a noob in the pc world.
I successfully overclocked my pc 6 months ago and my system is stable (didnt crash once) and i did that without knowledge, just by reading.
I can pretty much do anything if i understand what am doing and what are the exits/recover possibles in case of a problem.
The thing is that am french canadian so i do understand english but sometimes when it goes a bit too far in the abbreviations or in the technical, i get lost.
One more thing, there is so so many subjects, wich one is the best for my tab ?
by reading again and again THE subject that i should, i might finally understand.
Am not in a hurry, for now, i find my tab smooth and easy of use but i never say no to even more smoothness or else.
Im still wondering about wich backup app to use for the default tab and like i ask in my first message, what and where does the backup app save

Check out MyBackupPro. It works for non-rooted Tabs and saves the backup either online or on the sd card.

Well here's what you need to do, in my opinion :
1. DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING that comes from Samsung. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you want to keep it that way.
2. Read up on the rooting/custom recovery thread so you can understand how to get nvflash up and running. This will help immensely as you start flashing custom roms and things go wrong. Backups using the CWM recovery are the quick way out of trouble when you flash a ROM and it screws up.
3. Get fastboot going, as this is probably the best tool for getting out of any trouble you get in to. These devices are incredibly hard to brick once you have the right tool set at your disposal.

thanks, following the info i got in a previous post, when it says backup on sd card and that i use a tab that doesnt have an external sdcard, does it mean it will save it on the tab ? Then if i get a problem with the tab, ill losse everything ?
If so, then i guess saving online is the best way to do it right ?

yesterday i backup my apps, music and pictures on my tab for 235mb total and i only owed the tab for 3 weeks now.
to me this is ridiculous, i better backup everything on my external HD with the usb cable, it might take longer and ill have to do it manually but i rather do that than pay 20$ per year.
anyone has a better solution ?

Hi, I recently installed Android 4.0.4 to my Galaxy S2. The reason I am asking these questions is because all/most of the documentation written for them seems to be written for a Galaxy S2 with 4.0.3 or below.
Basically, the latest update was bad, made the system look ugly, makes phone signal drop, battery drain, some texts drop, and Silent mode seems to be no different from vibrate mode in that it still vibrates. What I want to do is root my Galaxy S2, backup all of the apps, SMS, MMS, Call logs and their data (So that when I restore the phone, I don't have to start games like Asphalt 6 and Cut The Rope over again) and then install CM9 + Google Apps and restore the apps and their data. Is there an easy way of doing this that's suitable for a first time rooter and flasher?

Ok, I read through it and it seems like it's not too complicated, but when it says "Internal SD Card" does that mean my MicroSD card or something different?

No, internal SD card is your internal storage. Your microSD is external as you can take it out

As for backing up apps and games etc....titanium backup. I was advised to use the pro version, will never turn my back on it. As for the rom and root it depends what kernel wnd rom you want to use. My signature has links to a reliable kernel and rom thats based on CM, AOKP and a few others rolled into one, magic config link is also usefull to maximize battery life

Ok, also, is anything likely to go wrong during the rooting process? I'm trying to backup via Kies before doing anything, and Kies keeps failing and telling me to reconnect. I've tried restarting the PC and phone, and it keeps doing it, some I'm wondering whether I should bother backing up with Kies at all.

it's your internal storage (Phone), not the microSD card...

Only thing that will happen when rooting (providing you use a kernel that is trusted, some have emmc cap erase bug, messes things up, luckily i aint had that before) your get a yellow triangle when booting your phone, this can be removed using triangle away app which resets your binary to say it hasnt been tampered with. Aslong as you follow instructions fully, you should be fine as for kies, odin hates it, disable kies or uninstall it from your pc. Backups are always better with titanium, your probably find that your apps are backed up to google but may need to restart games etc where as titanium saves everything so you start from where you left things

Ok, so I decided that I'm going to use Method 1 in Stileth's signature ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 ) would this apply for that? How dangerous is that method. Also, I can't backup with Titanium before rooting, which was my main concern, as I wanted a backup in case anything went wrong whilst rooting.

Personally i used this link the 1st time i rooted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=litening+rom i cant see any problems with the link you sent though so shud be fine, seeing as you cant do a backup at the moment, i think your going to end up needing to restart all your games etc after rooting and installing a custom rom (if your doing that aswell) i would strongly advise to make a nandroid backup before you do anything though, most links will advise you to do that aswell. atleast if anything does go wrong you can reflash your phone back to its original state.

the nandroid backup is just a safety thing so if anything does go wrong during root, you can flash straight back. rooting wont disturb any of your settings or games etc so once rooted your be fine to use titanium for a full back up before using a custom rom

haha we all started as noobs at 1 point, flashing gets easier all the time, aslong as you read posts fully and follow instuctions fully, you shouldn't run into any major problems, if you do there is always someone on here that will be able to help and 90% of the time the answer is already somewhere on the forum

Ok, quick question, what will Titanium do with the apps on my SD card. Do they need to be backed up, or are they safe since they're on the SD card? Or does Titanium back them up anyway?

once you start using titanium it will back up everything, everywhere. you can change filters to only back up what you want, it will do automated backups if you set it all up (the pro version is definitely advised as you can also freeze or remove system apps to improve battery etc but do not rush into that as if you remove or freeze something then it could have effects on other parts of the phone but there are a few useful guides on that side of things) when cahnging roms though, do not back up anything written in red on titanium (those are system things, if you restore red items on new roms, it will interfere with the new system settings and cause force closes etc, again there are guides about for titanium aswell but it is easy to use

Ok, whilst I will probably buy Titanium backup at a later date, is the paid version needed for what I'm doing right now. I say that because I literally do not have enough money in my bank account for it (I'm 14 )

as far as i remember the free version will let you back things up and restore them, the pro version lets you do the freezes etc. it took me a while before i went to the pro version

Hi, new here although have been guesting for 6 months..
I have been thinking about rooting for over a year now and since just before I picked up my S3 last June when I had my nexus S I was 'researching' the rooting procedure and potential problems / benefits
Took the plunge tonight and rooted my S3.. went well and took about 5-10 minutes (was being VERY careful)
So now my phone is rooted
My main purposes
1) Get rid of major bloatware
2) backup data
3) Overclock performance
4) increase already impressive battery life
5) possibly get a custom ROM (unsure)
I know the answers are dotted around and I have seen bits and pieces but wanted a personalised answer if that makes sense..
What are the first things I should do> btw used the samsung galaxy 3 i900 v.5.0 toolkit to root.. very nice and easy
I have downloaded ROM manager, titanium backup, busybox and hc-ktool (although i think the last if for s2?)

For EFS backup: here
For Titanium: usually I do a full backup of all system & user apps every 2nd day (in case I flash something the day after) whereas restoring system apps & data is NOT advised as it might lead to force closes
For ROMs: look in the android development section, many choices available

You can get rid of the majority of bloatware via Titanium backup. About the ROMs, it is solely depends on your personal preferences. I would suggest using GalaxSih kernel by Harunjo if battery life is your main concern and Perseus by Andreilux kernel for performance and battery life.
Good touchwiz ROM I would recommend is omega ROM. It's easy to install and you can remove all bloatware/selectively install the ones you want.
Siyah kernel is very popular, allowing users to fully customize settings.. ie overclocking, undervolting... among other things.
Setcpu also seems to be pretty popular for cpu customizations, as well as allowing users to stress test if you decide you want to undervolt.

To the last poster, yes I appreciate its kind of a banned quesion about ROMS, it isnt a best ROM thread though as such and although maybe not worded clear enough, i was asking for some good ROMS that would achieve the things I listed. I will of course do my own research as I spent 5 months reading up about rooting in the first place. I would have hoped that as it was asked somewhat in context it would be seen differently.
The whole concept of rooting still feels new and unexplored and is only as I am confident enough to go for it that I am.. id rather re-ask questions and understand in relation to my specific situation in addition to reading prior posts than just read other peoples posts and hope it relates to my experience.
About Titanium Backup.. it seems the backup this morning has stored on the SD card.. how can I set it to backup to the EXT SD Card? I have created a folder on the EXT card 'TitaniumBackup' so how would I tell Titanium Backup to back up there instead as I cant see where I would do this?
Also, 1.7GB on the SD card is taken up by CWM recovery. Can someone explain why and how I move this 1.7GB to EXT card? I dont know if I can just move it using My Files. I doubt it.
All that rooting does is to grant the user a higher level of access to the system of itself it does nothing .
Recovery set the location in Nandroid to ext sd card .Likewise with TB backup .
Roms all roms are good for S3 .
Suggestion is to start with a rom you understand what it is and how to flash it .

I take it you mean the backup, in which case it can be moved anywhere just do not rename it or you will not be able to use it. I prefer a root explorer to the my files app, I personally use ES file explorer then anything can be moved anywhere on the phone.
Some of your other questions:
Backup efs. You can do that through HC-kTool, just tap "backup efs to /sdcard/efs.img" then you can copy it to your ext sd, your PC, USB pen, get as paranoid as you like.
Manual backup via titanium. click the little tick on the top right of the main page then tap "backup all user apps"
Security, just be careful, and be sure to search XDA before you change anything that could do harm
what to do first. Backup with CWM recovery, backup efs, install a root explorer, install and do an initial run of ad free android.
overclock. To overclock you need a custom kernel, I use Siyah and it offers a lot of options for overclocking, undervolting, 2 CPU governors GPU clock rates and volting etc etc etc. take care, overclocking too much can cause damage to the CPU over time.
Bloatware. use Titanium to safely remove bloatware, and there are guides telling you what is safe.
ROMs. These are my personal favorite SuperNexus 0 bloatware and speedy also the next build will be 4.1.2 and Omega a nice fast samsung based rom, you can choose JB or ICS what I like about Omega is you can remove all bloatware during the install, of choose what you want, it is also extremely smooth with Siyah kernel.
What else. You can do anything litterally anything, think of something to do and you will be able to do it.

For Titanium - open the apps - press menu - preferences - backup folder location.
In recovery, you can choose to backup to external sd card.
You can move the nandroid to anywhere you like but you must put it back to the original folder when you need to restore it. 1.7GB is not big at all

I would totally donate to anyone who took the time to figure this phone out. When I went to the T-Mobile store, I was looking for the L9, which appears to have a strong modding community behind it, but they didn't have it in-store and I was in a pinch, so here I sit with a completely stock experience in my pocket. Not the worst stock experience, surely, but still stock.

Playfulgod has been working on native cwm for this, but I found that the f3 2nd init recovery works. Check my thread in atr

So I apologize if Im posting in the wrong spot but I noticed yall are still working on the F6...so I figured this made sense...
I thought I knew exactly what I wasdoing but did not....I was lucky enough to find patience enough to read up before flashing...I see the threads posted on how to root, backup, and restore this phone...but all those threads explain it using so0ftware other than I have... Since I made some moves before truly knowing what I was doing...I'd like to just stick wiith what i got for the moment and see if yall, as the experts can guide me down the runway...
Heres What I have so far:
1. I DO have root access
2. I DO have SuperSU and it seems to be working in the sense that it keeps logs...but sometimes it gives me a binary error. (I have NOT et converted SuperSU into a system app...bc im unclear if its necessary after reading a few different threads)
3. I DO have Root Browser' which I use to shuffle things around. (I DO have the /system and /data folders relocated on my external SD)
4. I DO have Titanium Backup which I used to BU my USER APPS/SYSTEM DATA.
5. I DO have Flashify which I also used to BU my STOCK RECOVERY/KERNEL (I cant seem to figure out where that recovery is being default stored though...Ive been searching high and low.
NOTE: Although im happy I have made it this far...I dont wanna go any further until I know exactly what im doing. I fear that I have missed something small. Something that would be a no brainer to you experts.
I'm unclear of storage requirements...I BELIEVE that I must store all my rooted tools on the external bc the goal is to wipe everything NOT on ext SD.
What I THINK I know is that hypothetically since im backed up...or when im 100% certain everything is....I can just click REBOOT TO RECOVERY MODE under the menu using Titanium.
IF I happen to be correct up to that point....I think my next move is using Titanium to put back the things ive stored on my SD.
In my mind that leaves me with the same ROM...but without the fluff...and now the ability to save to ext SD.....
If I underestand right....currently there are no MOD upgrades available due to difficulty of unlocking the bootlag....or something that sounds likethat...
I have ZERO experience with any of this....I hope what I just shared is at least in the ballpark of the right direction..

Recovering F6
I agree with MadeFree, that the recovery file should be found in the 'Clockwork Mod' folder, under External SD, when using File Manager. When in recovery mode it should automatically bring up your Rom-backup when you click on Recover from External / (creation date) file name / yes to confirm.
Also, I use the F6 and I have bricked it multiple times while trying to figure out what i can actually do on it, as it only currently has a custom recovery made for it. I have been trying to figure out myself how to recover all the apps, files, pics, videos, etc. when i have to flash to STOCK Rom during brick. Currently, my solution for this was not found in the 'nano-droid backup' (i have been led to believe it could be recovered in RECOVERY MODE) but rather in an app called ROM toolbox from Google store. This does so much more than Titanium Backup does but i still use titanium for backing up a single application if needed. Rom toolbox can also save a copy of the Kernel as well as monitor your apps, make CPU tweaks, make backups using Google drive and much more. But the easiest way I have found for me may be different for you. Currently, my only reliable solution for recovering my data is using ZIP ME, (downloaded from the ROM toolbox app) as well as backing everything up using Google drive. The zip files are nice when not near my computer though. All i have to do after booting up the 'factory reset' is open file manager and look for my zips.
do not be afraid to soft brick (looping, freezes, crashes) when all you have to do is factory reset your phone using key combo or use the firmware followed in from the link provided by Madefree, down below.

I agree with MadeFree, that the recovery file should be found in the 'Clockwork Mod' folder, under External SD, when using File Manager. When in recovery mode it should automatically bring up your Rom-backup when you click on Recover from External / (creation date) file name / yes to confirm.
Also, I use the F6 and I have bricked it multiple times while trying to figure out what i can actually do on it, as it only currently has a custom recovery made for it. I have been trying to figure out myself how to recover all the apps, files, pics, videos, etc. when i have to flash to STOCK Rom during brick. Currently, my solution for this was not found in the 'nano-droid backup' (i have been led to believe it could be recovered in RECOVERY MODE) but rather in an app called ROM toolbox from Google store. This does so much more than Titanium Backup does but i still use titanium for backing up a single application if needed. Heads up to ya....
There is another app that ya all could try, but its FREE and works.Back Up Your Mobile. Go figure huh?
It stores on internal, but I copied to external_sd and that is where my backup is located.
