Atrix 2 Webtop - Motorola Photon 4G

Has anyone played with the updated version of webtop on the ATRIX 2. Its very smooth and looks a hell of a lot better then the current version we are using. Been trying to figure out if there is a way to update our current version.

From everything I've seen really it's no different Webtop WT-1.2.0-160 on the MoPho. It's Avant dock on the bottom, LXDE dock on top and still just eyecandy and fail. Moto STILL has no clue as to what the webtop phones can do. For all the hassle of trying to get the Atrix 2 webtop to work on the MoPho you are better off unchaining webtop all together and turning it into a REAL desktop environment.

Do you have a copy of their webtop partition? Might be as simple as pushing it to ours.

That I don't, I will see if my friend will allow me to get a hold of his phone but I doubt he will
Im not sure if I'm calling it the right thing, but on the ATRIX 2 the home screens transitions a lot smoother and I thought the glare over the widgets was dope too

The webtop drivers aren't the same. The Atrix 2 has a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, TI OMAP 4430 chipset vs the Tegra 2. It would require source for both but the Atrix 2 is more of a step down from the MoPho anyways and isn't worth the effort.
The launcher is a different matter. That could very well be a drag and drop with minimal changes to get it to work.

[Q] Atrix (and other Tegra 2) OpenGL Oddity

When comparing my Atrix to my CM'd Defy in Quadrant, I see that the Atrix draws a deep shadow on the lower left part of the planet, while the Defy doesn't. I went looking on youtube and only saw this on Tegra 2 devices, so I'm wondering, is this a feature (more advanced ambient occlusion support?) or a bug?
I've now seen this on the Atrix, Optimus 2x, G2x, and Xoom, but not the Transformer.
I saw same thing I think not 100% sure but I think its part of the chipset drivers so I would have to say not a bug?
AT&T ATRIX - VERSION 2.3.4 ROOTED BL UNLOCKED
Thanks for the reply. I guess that my concern about it being a bug is due to the fact that it looks pretty bad, i.e. jerky and uneven. And why doesn't the Tegra 2 Transformer show it? I emailed the Quadrant developer to see what their take is.
its nvidia stuff, theyre the bet to give us good stuff, but they're doing something wrong, im really dessapointed with them

Is the atrix right for me?

Hi,
I'm using a LG Optimus One right now and I'm looking to upgrade to the atrix.
I'm temporarily in the US and have found a really good deal on a used Atrix so I'm really tempted, however I've still got some questions:
1. Is the atrix able to run all games (even the dual-core ones) when it's running on stock rom?
2. Do you think it's worth for me to spend about 100 $ more to get a newer phone like the HTC Sensation? (I mean I'm not sure how big the difference between this two would be, and the atrix even has more ram)
3. How good does the fingerprint sensor work? It sounds really cool in theory but how good is it really?
4. Do you think in terms of overall experience (speed, smoothness of scrolling) the atrix is comparable to the iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I want to be able to ocassionally do stuff on my phone with one hand? This is possible on smaller screens like my Optimus One but is it possible on the atrix?
I haven't had a lot of gaming experience (at least on the phone), but all the games I've tried that are compatible from the Market runs pretty smoothly on the Atrix.
To answer your question about the fingerprint sensor, it works quite well as an unlock safety mechanism, for me at least. Especially with the volume button unlock mod, and if you are willing, on custom roms that greatly reduced the lag that stock rom has for unlocking with finger swipe.
Other people also have luck in utilizing the sensor as a trackball during navigation or text selection.
As for one hand usage, I use the phone mostly with just one hand, and I'm even using swype exclusively to type. To me it's perfectly comfortable and I feel like it wouldn't be so if the phone was any bigger.
Here's what I think:
Q. Is the atrix able to run all games (even the dual-core ones) when it's running on stock rom?
A: So far I've been able to play everything I've thrown at it (stock or not), even the latest and greatest games. And if you mean dual-core games as Tegra games, of course it can play them, the Atrix is a Tegra 2 phone.
Q. Do you think it's worth for me to spend about 100 $ more to get a newer phone like the HTC Sensation? (I mean I'm not sure how big the difference between this two would be, and the atrix even has more ram)
A: You preatty much have it sorted out, I personally wouldn't go for the Sensation (or any other dual-core at the moment), in that case I would wait a bit longer to get a Tegra 3 phone.
Q. How good does the fingerprint sensor work? It sounds really cool in theory but how good is it really?
A: For me it's been a really great and useful feature since I track my car and control many of it's features (locks, alarm, etc) and also control several video survelliance cameras right from the Atrix, so the FP is a must for me.
Q. Do you think in terms of overall experience (speed, smoothness of scrolling) the atrix is comparable to the iPhone 4?
A: I consider the Atrix far superior than the iPhone 4 (this has been discussed over and over). I can list the features but it will get very lenghty. I will just mention a few:
1. Atrix is a 1 Ghz (overclockable) Dual-Core nVidia powered device. IPhone 4 is an 800 single core.
2. Removable (longer lasting) battery. The iphone's battery doesn't perform very well at all.
3. Android OS, subjective I know, but I rather have complete control of the OS since it's MY phone.
4. More RAM. Very important for performance.
5. Webtop and real HDMI output
Q: I want to be able to ocassionally do stuff on my phone with one hand? This is possible on smaller screens like my Optimus One but is it possible on the atrix?
A: Of course, I always install two different Keyboard layouts, Swift X Pro for two thumb typing, and Swype for one hand typing.

lapdock usefulness?

I'm considering picking up a lapdock for my Atrix, but I understand CM (and Neutrino, which I'm using now) may not support it just yet. Anyone have any strong feelings pro or con on the lapdock's usefulness? Could I actually use it for light document work, that sort of thing? I use LibreOffice for my work.
Just wondering if it's more of an interesting idea that wasn't implemented well, versus a nicely useable thing once hacked properly.

I can't speak the lapdock necessarily but I have the webtop and I love (well loved, I'm on CM9 now) it. I did collaborative document editing using the web and application version of Google Docs. Can LibreOffice docs be opening with Google Docs? Playing music, browsing the web, and sending texts/gchat, etc are all relatively easy. If you can get a good deal I would recommend it. I used this before I rooted and was forced to use WIFI as opposed to my data connection but I'm sure there is a hack for that by now.
I use the lapdock everyday. I haven't found a rom that I like with the lapdock (settings issues, etc) so I am on stock but the .24 1.3 oc Faux kernel (I run it a 1.1 or 1.3) seems to boost lapdock performance. Keyboard is cramped and I wish the screen would tilt back further but these are minor complaints, particularly if you can get a lapdock for $100. My wife's desktop died so I gave her my laptop and I now generally use the lapdock. For documents, I have access to the Citrix Xen Desktop (from my office) so I can use Outlook/Word and Excel and they work fine (of course the Xen means the lapdock is just being used as a dumb terminal). Only other problem is that the lapdock hogs memory (and it doesn't free it after uplugging) so after I use the lapdock I always reboot the phone..
If you can find a good price, I think you can find them for around $100 now, I would say it may be worth it. I have only used it when I travel for watching movies, etc on a plane or killing time in airports. Its a bit awkward to use without a mouse (IMHO) and if I had a tablet I would probably never use it. Its nice to have, but a little less user friendly than a tablet and more difficult than a laptop for productivity.
As for ROMs, I've upgraded to CM9 which is not compatible with the webtop, but I ran the Alien build for about 6 months with no issues. Its easy enough to just flash a ROM for a day or two that is webtop compatible and reflash back to your preferred ROM afterwards - that is my plan next time I travel.
I don't think the lapdock is particularly useful. It's a memory hog, and pretty darn slow. My netbook is a lot faster. I also detest the lack of multitouch on the trackpad.
I got mine for Christmas, but also got a 7" HTC tablet at the same time. The tablet gets lots of use; the lapdock is sitting in the box. I guess I should sell it while it's still worth something.
While the non-Blur custom roms don't have webtop, they DO have landscape HDMI mirroring.
Mirroring the display is MUCH more useful for me. Everything responds perfectly, and the trackpad and keyboard work well too. The device doesn't feel bogged down, as it did under webtop, and I haven't found there was anything I could do under webtop that was more efficient than anything on the phone UI.

I just wish the OS scaled better for the higher resolution of the laptop dock, but it's a minor inconvenience. The major inconvenience for me is that it likes to reboot once it stays idle while on the lapdock for longer than 10 minutes, but that might be due to undervolting.

I found a couple tricks to work around both of these issues for myself.
I use LCD Density Modder Pro and lowered the density to 175, makes things seem kind of small on the phone interface but it looks great on the lapdock and is still usable (for me) without the dock as well.
For the idling, I set up a Tasker profile that sets the display time out to 2 minutes, disables autobrightness, and sets brightness to 1 whenever I'm on a charger. Generally, if I'm actually using the dock I'll touch it within 2 minutes anyway.
I also found that for some reason, my screen won't time out while on the dock at all lately, but if I know I'm not using it I can manually turn the screen off.
Obviously it's all work around and would vary from person to person, but there are options.
Also, Switch User would let you create a second profile for lapdock use (with a different LCD Density, screen time out, ETC) if you don't mind doing a reboot between using the lapdock and using just the phone.
^all of this referring to CM based ROMs without webtop
I think the lapdock is going to see a resurgence in usefulness when the CM9 roms start getting better and include the Tablet interface.
using the phone and then getting a full tablet UI to play with (ICS tablet interface is nice) will be much better than the webtop and yes, I'm a fan of the webtop

Battery, (which charges your phone while it's docked), screen, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and 2 USB ports.
Thanks. Shame that it doesn't include a front cam (even a cheap VGA would do) as I would love to use it for Skype video calls.

How responsive is the dock these days? Has there been much in terms of official software updates? I would use it mainly for web browsing and watching videos (on iPlayer for example).

Lapdock is great imo. No updates from Moto other than Firefox from what I see. You want the best out if it you need to install Gentop2, Debian, etc. Much more useful then.

Motoblur ICS will include an overhauled Webtop which is just tablet view with a different resolution. Unfortunately, we will be waiting a couple months for that.

Few thoughts about Lapdock with ICS leak beta

First of all let me start off by saying that I was deeply disappointed with the performance of the Lapdock on the stock Gingerbread ROM. The idea was great in principle, but it just didn't translate to a good or even satisfactory user experience. The entire device was very sluggish and I quickly regretted my purchase.
However, after flashing the leaked ICS ROM, I was encouraged to see the Motorola has scrapped the dual environment of a Firefox/Smartphone hybrid and went with something that makes much more sense; a Tablet/Smartphone environment. Apps load in their default smartphone resolution, but with the click of a button, you can switch to much higher resolution Tablet view. Credit this to ICS.
Gone are the long periods of waiting for the simplest of webpages to load. Gone are the out of memory errors. Gone is the sluggishness of navigating through simple menus. I actually enjoyed using the Lapdock today for the first time since I purchased it. Sure the lack of Firefox closes some Internet doors, but let's be honest, with the slow performance of the browser...who was watching Hulu anyway? Even full screen YouTube crawled on 4g.
I will post again with more thoughts after I get a chance to spend more time with it over the weekend. But Cheers Moto, way to see that your initial idea was a bust and calling an audible.

Agreed. The only thing the 500 has over the 14" screen and a webcam.
I actually prefer the compact size and light weight (2.2lbs). Also a 10.1 screen is plenty big enough for me.

Wish I'd read the OP's post before I returned my lapdock 500 for the same complaints he had. Ended up getting an ATP to replace it.
Well even then, i hate the idea because i use the lap dock as a student. The sound is constantly giving me issues and it is definitively Webtop 3.0 because i never had sound issue with the old webtop. The issue being the sound cracking system wide, not just music. I have to reset the lap dock and from 'hit or miss' i get it working. Also office on android is awful. I have used the Onlive Dekstop app and it doesn't fit the resolution of Webtop 3.0 so pretty useless and clicking on the screen doesn't correspond to the desktop displayed, have to guess where to click. and finally i have spend hefty amounts on 3 different office apps for android all of which have turned out sluggish and useless when it comes to making your own document / spreadsheet. Also when you disconnect your phone the screen glitches, constantly flickering for a while until rebooted. in my opinion, lap dock plus ICS = fail. I hope ubuntu for android releases soon!
Where is this ICS leak you are using?
I just ordered the lapdock and wasn't quite sure on the speed since there isn't a lot of reviews or anything for it. I mainly bought it so I can have a full sized keyboard and bigger screen size for watching tv/movies while not at home and didn't feel like spending a few more hundred just for a laptop I would hardly use.
ubuntu for android will still suck. and the real ubuntu will only be released on devices that they put it on. so razr will not get the ubuntu from the distributor. I bet that the ics tablet layout will be the norm on all devices when universal docks are released. I cant wait until moto releases a tablet style dock like the padphone. it has to be coming, and I will definitely purchase it. I am using a modified atrix dock and it lacks multitouch on the mouse, but I am loving it. The ics webtop is in beta, so I expect this to get better as it is updated. and "hefty" is kind of ridiculous considering that the real office is a few hundred dollars.
Really considering picking up a lapdock since they are only $60 right now. Just not sure how much use it will actually get.
I picked up the Atrix version for my razr. Wish it had multitouch on the track pad. I modded it for auxiliary output. Besides that, with ics the webtop beta is amazing. This should be the default with any device eventually. Hopefully they release a tablet dock, then the RAZR will be upgraded to the functionality of the padphone. Seriously check it out if you can the phone apps that have corresponding tablet apps can be switched to run as the tablet mode when running. Then it will automatically switch back and forth when docking and going back to phone.

IMO, worth it at $70, not worth it at $200 (which is current pricing for the lapdock 100). Works great for me and I'm on the old version, better than I expected in fact. Looking forward to the ICS version as I think that will be even better but it works well enough as-is to not be worth messing with a leaked version.

So I have a bit of a decision to make... Also a bit of speculation.

I've had my photon since October. I've been an avid HTC fan until I picked up this phone. Sold I was. I've never looked back.
However, I really like the new evo lte. I have serious problems when it comes to new toys that are easy to obtain with something as simple as the swipe of magical plastic.
That being said...
My theory on Motorola and the rumored Photon Q is as follows;
Motorola has said, according to an article on either engadget or AC, that the quad core Tegra 3 with lte will be ready Q4. The fall CTIA is October 9th - 11th. I'm gonna say we will either see an event a week before or an event at CTIA in October. Things just seem to be coming together like a good game of tetris.
Now I really don't wanna burn and uograde when I'm expecting to see something amazing from Motorola. I'm also betting Motorola picks up the ubuntu project which I also think will be shown off in October.
That's a lot of speculation... Lol
So, I'm thinking I'm gonna keep the photon and buy a dock and a keyboard and a mouse and hook it up to this 73inch monster sitting in my living room. Only problem with that is the reviews saying that webtop just sucks a big set.
Questions...
Is webtop that bad?
Is it worth it for somebody who might find it useful?
Is all the functions of the device still there? Text and calls and what not.

Webtop sucks. Useless. Has really specific use case scenarios and very, very little beyond that. Good news is Moto know this, and have made some head way towards fixing it with the new ICS webtop on the RAZR, which will presumably be included on the Photon's ICS update. It's basically the ICS tablet interface with properly scaled apps and a separate home screen layout from the phone. Quite cool.
Tegra 3 is ****e, though, and I can't imagine the LTE variant will be any better. Snapdragon S4 trounces it in very meaningful ways like browser performance, battery life, and audio quality. I desperately wish the international/open market One X had S4 instead of Tegra 3 (Though I still wouldn't buy it because the One X has no SD slot... Whereas the Evo LTE does). If I had the option, you bet I'd buy the Evo LTE over whatever Moto churns out at the end of this year. Next year, under Google, Moto might have a shot - and open bootloaders. This year I for one have been burned enough.

Useless if you are locked but if you unlock it has near unlimited potential. ICS Webtop on the other hand is a joke and is a move in the wrong direction. ICS Webtop should be an extension of "Mirroring Mode" and Moto should replace the current Webtop with a proper desktop environment. If Ubuntu and I can run a proper desktop environment on an Atrix/Photon why the hell can't Motorola. Here's a write up as to why stock Webtop and ICS Webtop are full of fail.

Citrix web apps. And if you use it for work, and your company has a draconian device policy that makes it easier to authorise one device and use it on multiple screens rather than actually use a laptop.
Apologies for neglecting the Ubuntop/Webtop Plus dev. Have yet to try it thanks to being stuck on locked Moto devices myself. Looks great, and I can think of many more uses for a full Linux distro in my pocket.
I actually like what they're doing with the new webtop, though I wish it was more powerful and could run the phone apps in a window like the old webtop. There's a lot of merit in taking advantage of Android's built in scaling, and having a separate UI with widgets and so on for larger screens is a great idea.
Ultimately I wish webtop was ChromeOS, since that would make the most sense from a Google product and service consolidation perspective.

Like Loki said, his Ubuntop makes webtop into a beast. Your performance will compare with the original netbooks in some ways, but in another it just makes your device infinitely more versatile than just a netbook. Even if you don't extend webtop, basically imagine a Chromebook that uses Firefox instead of Chrome. The only other native application would be the Cell phone window that lets you use your cell phone in an IM like form.
It's not all bad, it's a heck of a lot better for nothing. Before I changed webtop I mostly read webcomics, social sites and used Google Docs. After Lokifish's improvements I now have Bluefish, Abiword, Gnumeric, a real desktop experience that doesn't sacrifice anything from the phone. It is only too awesome to have your phone move seamlessly from being a handset to a miniature computer without any skips in calls or text messages. Since I chose to integrate Google Voice I can text from the web without anyone being the wiser.
