I find that when I tether via PDANet using a USB that the battery will slowly drain depending on how much data usage is going on.
I'm assuming this is normal as it happens with the stock battery & the extended battery.
However, if I do wifi tethering via Barnacle Wifi it does not drain... but then again, the speeds also aren't as fast.
hmmm... õ_Ô
every application is different in regards to battery usage and whatnot. if u like the speed of pdanet, keep it and plug it into the wall. it should be enough to charge through the drain.

well, it is being plugged in while using PDANet... that's how it works. connecting the phone to your PC via USB cable & 'tethering'... so when you say 'keep it plugged in', are you implying that there's some sort of USB splitter cable i should be using to connect my phone to my PC and the wall jack at the same time? õ_Ô
All i do is plug the phone into the pc and leave it for a minute then activate PDAnet and my power is fine...

I've done that before to. It seems to happen primarily when I'm downloading something. If I'm just doing ordinary web browsing then it does not happen.
When I download via wifi, it averages 100Kb/s... and no battery drain
When I download via PDANet, it averages 700Kb/s... battery drain city
The phone gets very hot also(shouldn't be a reception issue since it'll have full bars and get hot). and of course, it does not get hot doing wifi.
I seem to remember reading a few threads in the past about the TB not taking a charge if it gets too hot and basically overheating. I know mine gets really warm when using navigation and plugged into a cigarette lighter. It may be worth it try a different microUSB cable if you have one handy.
I guess moving all those bits around generates a lot of heat
As for battery drain, you may try a different "preferably on the back of your pc" usb port. Of course the rom\kernel your running also has an effect on the heat generated. Just my own personal experiences. Hope it helps
sadly, yes i've already tried different microUSB cables and even tried it on different laptops. i've used both Sense & AOSP based roms with various kernals/radios and have always seemed to have this issue.
maybe i'm pushin' this old phone too much. ;P

Ever since I updated to 2.1 it seems that when my battery gets around 15% and I try to charge it via USB, nothing happens and the battery just drains even faster.
The only way to make it charge, is to switch of the device entirely and charge it while it's off.
Im not sure if anyone else has this problem?
I'm not entirely sure but I think that's a bug that has always existed on the X10 series, it has happened too me too in Donut
Yeah, I've seen this happen too. Turning the phone off and on again usually seems to make it charge properly
When charging via a laptop i've seen the charge go down when i've had the wireless on and been playing movies etc...
Possibly because the amount of charge than can be delivered via a usb (not connected to a plug) is very small
Same here. It happened to me in Donut and also now in Eclair. But in my home PC and Laptop it charges normaly but slow. But in my office PC it gets discharged. Is there anything with the PC too?
i did a bit of a quick test myself on this yesterday.
i plugged my phone into the usb and set it to the charge phone option, then closed all apps, turned off data connection and gps and left it with the screen off for 30 mins. after this time my batter had dropped by 2%. i unplugged the phone from the laptop and left it, again with the screen, data and 3g off and in 30 mins the charge dropped by just 1%.
there must be a bug with this in the system somewhere as this is soo annoying for me. i will try and turn the phone off and charge it later [when the battery dies after less than 8 hours with normal use] and see if that works.
got to say that i am very disappointed by this :-(
right for an update. i have just connected my phone to the wall charger, left the data connection and 3g on and left it charging for 30 mins. the result was an increase in charge of 17%!!!!!! thats more like it

The USB spec provides for 500mA of current at a USB port but it could drop to the lowest spec'd voltage while doing so, which could reduce the charging rate even more. If the USB port is actually a secondary port from an internal, self-powered hub, it might even limit the current to 100mA. It all depends, many USB implementations aren't known for following the spec's terribly well.
Some newer USB ports will comply with the latest spec's that allow higher charging currents (to 900 or even 1500mA).
I have been charging my phone via usb connected to my laptop ever since I got the phone and I noticed I was not getting the amazing battery life on Nero v3 that others reported. I ran across a thread that said something about charging from the stock wall charger to improve your your battery.
Well I decided to drain my battery after installing Nero v4.1 and charge it fully on the wall charger. Since doing this I have 51% battery at a point in the day when I would normally have 30% or less.
My question is has anyone else noticed this? Or tried it?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Your laptop may be limiting the current to the USB in power saving (typically if running off battery). So yes it is entirely possible for that to happen, and it would confuse the phone. Then it would not be able to re-align its battery capacity guess until it starting drawing from it again.
You can try turning off the option on the USB ports/controllers that says "Allow windows to turn this device off to save power". (If your using windows, I have not seen MACs with the power save issue).
Note: Some PCs use "hubs" for the external USB interfaces (ports). This can also cause a lower current to non self-powered devices.
I got an EVO 3D a few days ago and it was working perfectly. Once I rooted it, however, my battery would drain while I was using it when charging. It's not a slow drain either. It goes down 1% about every 2 or 3 minutes. It's not even heavy use. Just web browsing and texting. Watching a video will kill it in about an hour even on the charger. I've tried 3 different tons including stock and none will fix it. Any ideas anyone?
Just does not make any sense what so ever...have you tried another charger? Look at battery stats..see what is taking up so much power. Delete all apps if not used( bloatware).. What apps have you installed? Is gps on? Recallibrate battery. Turn on airplane mode, if it doesn't go down, possibly upgrade them. I can't help, but just trying to give other options. I charge my batteries on a external wall charger and mine is rarely plug in, except to load a rom I downloaded on my laptop. I also wonder if there is a short somewhere in the charging unit. Does it get hot more than usual? Wish I could be more helpful.
Really only a few things it could be.
If you pull the battery can the phone operate while plugged in?
What are you using to charge? If it is your computer your computer may not be able to supply enough power to the USB ports. It could be the charger its self.

USB charging or AC charging? HTC charging cable or something else?

I was having the same problem too while using the htc charger, but when i switch to a blackberry charger started working again.
Alright. I am using the stock HTC charger plugged into the wall. I've reconfigured the battery and eveb underclocked the cpu. All radios are off except the 3g radio and all bloatware and spyware uninstalled. I have discovered that if I use a Verizon prl to get 3g speeds instead of 1X it seems to fix my issue. However I do not want to always roam on verizon just to keep my battery alive because I do not want to get kicked off the network.
EDIT: I am running the latest version of steelrom currently.
try a different way to charge the phone
I should have mentioned in my last post that I have tried multiple outlers, cords, and chargers. Nothing seems to get it to charge while its being used.
If you can show it, the power drain...put back to stock and get a new one if you can...
(I thought I asked this recently but can't find the post)
OK ... first off GPS / Nav works.
The issue is first off in car use cigarette plug charger, when as a phone only (or playing music via BT) all OK .. battery keeps topped up.
However if I use SatNav the battery cannot keep up .... even though it says charging it slowly discharges ..
I read here some car adapters don't give out full mA current, (that SGS can take) to be 100% sure, I went and bought a 1.5A USB adapter and still the same ... no problem until I switch on SatNav ... then it starts draining ... a couple of % every 15min.
I assume this is simply down to screen taking so much current .... but in very simple terms the phone should be able to keep up via charge when SatNav is enabled.
Anybody got a fix for this ? (screen dimming is enabled)
Ok seems that I am not the only one that is seeing this.
I've owned the S2 for a week and it feels very weird coming from HTC products.
It charges sloooooooow. Also I noticed that battery monitor shows weird values were on the Desire HD it was giving rock solid logical numbers in aspect of Voltage and current.
The s2 sometimes gives me 80% at 3,952 Volts and after a 40min drive 78% and ... 4,012 Volts. It is not stable at all
Just checking the stats in the batt monitor tool.
23:21 at 70% and 3,986 Volts while at 9:00 at 82% and 3,981 Volts.
It doesn't make any sense at all to me
From what I have read is that the charging controller of the S2 is only capable to charge up to a rate of 650mA while the HTC charged at 1000mA (0,65A vs 1A).
Now today I switched off wifi while driving and then it seemed to be very slowly charging. Give that a try and let us know.
Different types of chargers charge at different rates. Mains charges at 650mA, but USB and misc are around 450/550mA. If you're rooted you can change the charging currents in ExTweaks/Voltage Control/setCPU/whatever, however USB is limited as to what it can output anyway, and if you try and force too high a current through, things start to fry.

You would not use a Mains charger when using SatNa
It would be a basic requirement that SatNav use in car would be able to keep charged with a USB charger.?
As the same micro USB port is used, how does, phone know its not on Mains?
In answer to above Q ..Wifi is off, I always turn it off when I enable BT.

OK, that is an 'easy' one. The chargers 'shorten' the 2 data lines.
I've placed shorten between brackets because it doesn't do any harm at all.
I've you install battery monitor you can actually see 'usb connected' or 'ac charging'
As always using waze on my trip to work which takes about 50min.
Started at 58% and went up to 65% when I arrived.

Here is a simple Q then (maybe I'm naive) .. I am not using USB data port to charge, but a car USB charger point (no chance of any data)
Would charger manufacturers not have this 'short; in place as they are making chargers only ?
If not can you provide any details how to do this ... chargers have plenty of current, be good to get phone to use what it can of this.
dont know how to fix your issue but just to let you know its normal for the phone. Im always on my sat nav with a car charger and never been issues with losing any power. Quite often it comes off charge with more than it was plugged in with.
Hmmm.... I'm using original Blackberry car charger for both BB 9700 and SGS 2.
Yes, it charges slow, but with BT and GPS on it does gain on charge/percentage.

I have attached two photos showing an adapter I fixed myself. Look at the image 'charger-bottom-side.jpg' and notice the red circle. Within this circle you can see the short between the two data lines (D+ and D-). The short is simply a drop of tin-solder.

I have now purchased a new lead and charger (to be sure)
Running the App it shows "Charging AC Plugged"
It cannot keep up with current demand when Bluetooth & GPS active ... slowly discharges.
I have had the S2 for about a month now.
Seems like Sygic is the only GPS soft which I tried that doesn't hit the cpu 100% all the time.
I did a test over the weekend and with everything 'on' it slowly charged the phone.
yes
yeah, battery monitor will let you know that.
also suffered from this in the past
I have had the discharge problem using sat nav (Copilot live premium) and a car charger (various car chargers actually). Stock S2 with generic UK firmware. The problem exists on 4.03 and 4.04 - not sure about previous GB as updated to ICS as soon as I bought the phone.
I have found that if I apply battery save mode and turn down the screen brightness the charge just about holds station.
But the strangest thing I have found, although reading around I have not seen it mentioned elsewhere, is that if I enable mobile data the phone charges just fine whilst using sat nav. The problem only arises when I disable the data connection. This came to my attention whilst abroad where I deactivated data to avoid preposterous roaming charges.
This rather implies to me that something is trying to use the mobile data connection when it is deactivated and is causing battery drain when it can't. This could be any app of course, but the problem only rears its head when I use the sat nav (power hungry) with the mobile data turned off.
Has anyone else noticed this? Any advice on narrowing down which app/process this might be would be welcome.

Sorry for bumping into this thread but I think I can help.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your question is:
-Battery charging cannot keep up with discharging rate while using GPS and Bluetooth.
Reason for this problem:
-This occurs because usb charging further is lower than charging via wall charger, hence the battery heroes discharging when the demand is higher than the charging rate.
Solution:
-we need to increase usb charging current to equals the Ac charging current
How is that possible:
1.Root access is needed. If you don't already have root access key me know
2.custom kernel needed.
-You need to flash one of, Siyah, Dorimanx or dream kernel.
-Any of these kernels has the option to increase usb charging current
-move to 3. If you are already running any of the listed kernels.
3.after flashing the custom kernel, install extweaks from market.
-open extweaks
-under "misc", change the charging current to option 3.
Done

I advise not to do that because:
It will not solve this problem as charging from AC is already detected by the device (see above).
The option is dangerous and will enable (if working at all) charging with the higher current limits from any USB port.
good to know

Actually in my case when using sat nav it will charge with mobile data enabled, but will discharge (whilst connected to the car charger/wall charger) without data enabled.
I have read multiple posts talking about battery life problems suffered after the ICS update. However, my question is regarding the time it takes to charge the phone using a usb. I know the fact that usb charging is slower than wall charging. But what i am comparing is usb charging before and after the ICS update. My phone is not rooted and has the OTA update from motorola. Also, it is a RAZR and not RAZR MAX.
The question is, has anybody noticed that usb charging is slower after the ICS update? I used to plug in my phone with usually 50-60% battery life in the mornings and it always used to be fully charged before lunch. Now, the whole day goes by and it barely reaches 100%.
The phone, the usb cable and the computer are all the same. Only the software has changed.
My initial guess is that the 'charge only' option that used to be available before did a better job of sending more current than the options available under ICS.
Does anybody know of a way to fix it ? With or without root?
Thanks,
Kavik Bachani
I ran into your post after googling the same issue for my cousin; also started after ICS upgrade, but her phone is Xperia S, and its not only affecting USB charging, but even the wall charger is much slower now, more than 4hrs plugged for 30% charge only, when it used to take less than 2hrs for full charge before.
I've always had trouble charging my phone on a computer via USB. It goes way faster when on a wall charger.

there can be more than one issue for this.
1) could be the battery stat. but to wipe this you need to root your phone. Maybe just charge and discharge it a few times completely (till it shut's down automatically)
2) other charging source? are you using another USB-Port to charge it? it could happen, cause your phone has to 'tell' the USB port it's some kind of high power device to get 500mA and not like mouse and keyboard only 100mA. does the PC recognize the phone? are your usb ports unlocked (yeah, i know... even locked ports supports power, but maybe not enough...)?
3) do you charge it while running? or in shut down state? ICS seems to drains some more battery life while running then GB...
PS: charge only option is no more usable but ask an IT-provider to get a 'power-only' usb cable. i've got some and it only provides current, it's like normally charging
PPS: best rooting solution > get Arctic ICS (GSM/CDMA) or Epsilon (GSM) ROM, usb charging in less then 2h! for better result use the 'power-only' usb cable mentioned above
Another essencial tip is always charge through back usb, never in front and disable wifi, gps, data, bluetooth it will make phone charge more and faster.

The phone is plugged in to a USB port on the computer and is recognized as a Motorola RAZR. I also have the Motorola Device Manager installed which i believe installs all the necessary drivers.

I have so far avoided the root option since i am a little scared of bricking the phone / what if i am not able to restore it back to stock / unable to update phone to future software versions etc.
How does rooting the phone increases the speed of usb charging? Is the software that is being flashed on the device modified in certain ways that is not done as part of the .211 OTA update?
I have also read about the .215 leak. Do you know if the usb charging speeds are different between the two .211 and .215 versions?

For me i don't have any experiences with CDMA phones but what i read was a significant better signal state and battery life in .215 ...
Looks like they improved the system processes / memory usage to get less battery drain. This should be good for charging, because while charging it would drain less battery life / it's charged faster.

Rooting itself will not bring you any advantage in battery drain / charging times. But a rooted phone is open for kernel tweaks and custom ROMs.
Tweaks are used to improve the CPU to get more power or better battery life.
ROMs can be de-odexed / de-bloated to get rid of every senseless app or system process that drains battery while running in the background.
And this improves your battery life AND charge times
PS: There should be some stock ROM from EternityProject as emergency unbrick for CDMA too. Just use the search function, you should be able to go back to stock from every custom ROM.
