Q confused about uruk 1.6rc2 update - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there all - new to the archos sphere with a new archos 70. have experience with flashing android on my orange san francisco but things seems to be different here.
i have installed 1.5 and it works fine but now not sure if i upgrade to 1.5.1 or use 1.6rc2 update straight over 1.5 or do i need a full fresh install of 1.6rc2...
also bought one of the cheap and nasty case plus keyboard from amazon. and a cheap micro usb converter to standard female USB A. tried to connect the keyboard but nothing works (the keyboard works if i connect it to a pc...) not sure if i need to do something in settings or maybe i need special converter - any ideas?
cheers
michel

About the USB keyboard, I think you should have a look on this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309891

@mmoalem:
If you have a A70 then a normal Micro USB to USB is not enough.
You need an OTG Adapter with Micro A so that the Archos goes into HostMode.
The Nokia ca-157 is known to be working.

hey, i've come up from a san fran too - original OLED and tatty as hell now but still going strong!
if i remember rightly i put 1.5 on then 1.6rc2 over the top. 1.6rc2 is an upgrade as the file size is much smaller than the full 1.5. it works fine for me...apart from i get the white screen wake-up if i have network shares turned on in wifi options.

what are the steps for updating from 1.5 to 1.6cr2? Would someone be so kind to list them out as I tried to update but it keep booting up normal and won't let me connect to the tablet to send the update file.

After download the update file, put it somewhere in ur SDcard, then use root explorer to put it directly in /data/uruk update then wait until the update is finish and enjoy

and use urukconfig to 'force update' - at least that what worked for me in the end

huh, its really strange. I did the above with the update file but when I shut it down it just boot back to Urukdroid without doing anything. Is the path /data/UrukUpdate or /data/urukupdate? Also do I have to rename the update file? Also, is there just a 1.6c2 install file instead of installing the 1.5 then having to update it? I tried many times but it doesn't seem to recognize the update file. Any suggestions?

I did go into urukconfig but I don't see a force update button. I push the update button but it show no file available to update. I don't know if its my path name that is wrong or that I have to rename the update file? I would hate to have to redo the whole thing as it would be pretty time consuming~_~

Follow these instructions carefully and your upgrade will be fine.

extra question, I'm on 1.5 now, should i install kernel as well and if so, which one?

No need to get confused
The kernel/initramfs are already included in the update file (UrukDroid-1.6RC2-update.tbz2). Both will be updated during the process.
Have fun!

Indirect's Winows-based Root Method Not Working for me

Hi all,
First off, just want to say thanks to all of the hardworking devs out there that put a lot of time and effort into these projects. You guys are really awesome!
Secondly, I tried to post this as a reply in the developer's forum, but didn't have enough posts to qualify.
That all being said, I followed all of the instructions in Indirect's post here, but can't get the Nook Tablet to bring up recovery mode when I reboot. It just continues to load the standard B&N image. I even tried a factory reset to see if that would work, but same problem. I verified that the files on the micro-SD card match those as shown in Albert's excellent video here. The device is still running 1.4.0.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
No luck here either...I tried the root while watching Albert's You Tube video at the same time. I think the significant thing is that my screen displays something like:
Extracting files to SYSTEM...
Setting SYSTEM:bin/su permissions to 06755...
Creating SYSTEM:xbin/su symbolic link...
Installation Complete!
Install from sdcard complete.
Whereas the screen in the video shows:
Extracting files to SYSTEM...
Setting SYSTEM:bin/su permissions to 06755...
Creating SYSTEM:xbin/su symbolic link...
Installing GApps 29110878
For Android 2.3.5 Customized for the nook tablet
Mounting data...
Extracting files to data...
Unmounting data...
Install complete. Enjoy!
Installation Complete!
So clearly my install seems to silently abort somewhere in the middle...
Any insight or advice would be appreciated!

Beatbox,
Just re-reading your post I think I got farther than you, but also got stuck on your issue earlier. If you keep the Nook plugged into the PC via the USB cable during the power on, the Nook will boot into the recovery mode - that at least was what got me past your issue.
It's not about Rooting OR recovery. It's about the fact that this method is still being worked on. Indirect has been making modifications to the various files and it is my opinion that the file used in Albert's video is NOT the same file that would be downloaded if you went and obtained it right now.
I would wait this out until Indirect writes an updated post explaining that the method is finalized.
If this is not an option the original root method works perfectly.
Land - when you say "original root method" are you talking about something that predates Albert's solution?

Cool jearley9, this did indeed work for me and I was able to load the image. Problem now is that I always end up at the normal B&N Setup screen. Were you able to get past that part?
And thanks to all the other thread participants. I know it takes time to work these things out, so no biggie. We all get a little too excited and impatient with things like these sometimes.
Thanks - looking it over now...

Does your screen match my screen or the one in Albert's video? If it matches then you and I have the same problem. If not then you have something different going on...

Just wanted to provide an update. I attempted the instructions from the original rooting thread (my nook tablet doesn't have 1.4.1 yet, so didn't need to downgrade). When I ran the batch file to root, it detected that the device was already rooted - which I quote from the script, "Is bothersome."
Okay, so i think my device is half-rooted somehow. Just can't get the new home screen that I'm seeing on all the videos. I'll keep you guys updated with my further troubleshooting attempts.
Beat, you and I are at least synchronized - I too tried the original root method, and I had the same exact problem as you describe... a message saying "already rooted". I did a system reset right before I tried the root, so I don't see how it could be "already rooted".
I just purchased my Nook yesterday. I am wondering if there are newer units (mine included) that are more resistant to being rooted?
I'm having the same issue, but I can use the search function to determine that apps WERE installed (and will execute properly). I believe that Indirect has removed ADW launcher and Homecatcher from the zip we're suppossed to drop onto the SD Card. My guess is that we're waiting for him to come up with a solution to the "Market not showing up in launcher" issue.
Can someone confirm this?
Well any other tactics I've tried have been to no avail, so I'll just be patient and wait for Indirect to address it. I'm sure he has enough on his plate without us bugging him.
Many thanks to him again for even working on something like this.
Edit:
Okay, for some reason I missed Albert Wertz's helpful Youtube comment:
Please Vote this comment up so everyone else can read it among all the others. Indirect is making some changes to the script, if you dont get adw to launch right after the first reboot from root, you may have to download it manually from the market. You can use the N button menu search function to pull up market by typing M in the search. You can launcher it from here. Until the bugs are worked out, you may only be able to install from market, sideloading may still be an issue. Indirect is fixin

I did this and have no problem bringing up the Android Market now. Just installed an app successfully. Not sure where it lives though. I could only seem to launch it from the Recently Downloaded icon at the bottom bar.
Edit 2:
Okay, just restarted after installing the ADW and now it prompted me to start with it. Only issue I have now is if I hit the N button, it reverts back to the original Barnes & Noble homescreen and I have to reboot to launch ADW again.
I got pretty much to the same place - I downloaded HomeCatcher but that seems to be non-functional - Looks like the Nook home screen is winning this round...

To truly "reset" the system run the downgrade I linked previously EVEN IF you are on 1.4.0. After that it will be just like you took the NT out of the box. Then run the Indirect Root Batch and the "you are already rooted" should be gone. I would hope so anyway
Land,
I did the press and hold 9 times and got back to factory state.
Also, I tried Brianf21's files and I got the same problem as you. If I try to open Update.Zip from Windows it gives me "Please insert last disk of a multi-volume set...". I would guess that the zip file is malformed or incomplete, but that's just a guess...

I copied this post to the Development Thread in my recent reply to Brianf21. It is conceivable at this point that you and I are the only ones that have tried this. lol
Please put information regarding future attempts in that thread to help him troubleshoot.
Glad to see that you were able to reset. I don't believe it will be necessary again if Brian fixes the issue. To my knowledge simply entering CWM using his image had NO affect on my NT.

{TOOL}Auto_Flasher_V4.5---3/4/12 (Beta) Update 1.5Hboot support

Hey Kids, I figured it was getting kind of boring around here so I'm releasing a little tool I've been using for a while now. It's just what it says, an "Auto Flasher". It will flash any rom, any kernel, backup data, restore data, fix permissions, etc. With full wipe function or just a cache and delvik wipe. All from the comforts of your pc. Just plug in your evo3d with usb debugging enabled and some room on your sdcard and off you go. Oh, almost forgot. This will also Odex all your system apk's if you like. It's on the menu. Even if you have some odexed, it will skip over those.
Things to do first:
1. Run the AF4.5setup.exe. Choose a location (I like the desktop) to run it from. It will create a folder called Auto Flasher V4.5.
1.a Run the 2.08setup.exe and the 2.17setup.exe *(these are just RUU 2.08 and RUU 2.17. Download them even if you already have them. The exe will install them to the proper folder.)
2. Open the Auto Flasher V4.5\Place-Files-Here\ROM folder and copy paste your rom of choice.
3. Open the Auto Flasher V4.5\Place-Files-Here\Kernel folder and copy paste your kernel of choice (if your flashing a kernel).
4. Make sure USB debugging is on and you have about 500 mb on your sdcard.
5. If you need HTC drivers, look in the \Drivers folder. (Install them first).
6. Run the Auto_Flasher_V4.5.bat.
7. Sit back with a brew and watch the show. (It will prompt you a couple of times for some yes and no questions).
NOTES:
I had to separate the .exe's because of file size limitations on DevHost. If your not doing a firmware change then you don't need them. But I recommend you download them.
When restoring data, run your rom first for a couple of minutes. I found everything takes nicer.
When running "11. Fastboot Radio/Wimax Flasher" Please make sure you don"t interrupt this. You won't like the results. If something goes wrong, you will have to flash your radio manually because you'll be in a nasty bootloop.
This is a beta release. Many improvements on the way.
Disclaimer:
If you say I bricked your phone. I will laugh. Nothing this does can't be undone with a nand restore. So for the love of god, DO A NAND BACKUP FIRST!!!

Yes. the zipped folder has TWRP 1.1.1 in it, which works the same way, if you run it manually with ADB and Fastboot. The OP has made the process a little shorter and easier for you.
Thanks gonna give this a try later, so basically this acting like a Recovery in a way...

I have downloaded this on 2 different PCs with both IE and Firefox and am unable to run the Auto_Flasher_V3.exe.

Thoughts? I find it hard to believe that I have downloaded multiple bad copies.

Woot Deal Tablet S

Hi, I am newly registered user here who bought a 32GB Tablet S on the Woot deal the other day, long story short there is a question about the configuration of the Woot deal tablets over in the developer section, but since I am a new user with less than 10 messages posted, I can't answer there, so I am answering here in hopes someone will point them to this message, and it may be helpful for others:
About Tablet reads:
Android Version 3.2
Kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected]#1
Build number 1.10.001100001
On a side point I would like to ask if these are rootable from 3.2? and should I upgrade to 4.03, I have read some on lack of root access on these devices?
thanks
p.s. I am fairly new to Android, have a version 2.2 phone, but have been running Linux as my primary OS for over a decade

Hey. Thanks I thknk that was me. I don't have min.e yet but I think from reading alone that you can pull a zip from an early ics build and root it using condi's aio method. Don't quote me... I also think that you cannot root it out of the box.. but ics should hav e a new kernel.
As a linux dude maybe you can help out with the dev on these things.... it seems to be needed.
I would wait for someone in the know about this process to answer.
Thanks...I really hbope I can root it. Custom roms would be nice but a root is almost a requirement for me.
Thanks agaain for the reply

The kernel being build 10 will probably cause a failure trying to root the 3.2 directly to 4.0.3. First, run Condi's All-in-One tool (use AiO v4.0, I believe v4.1 has a bug that Condi needs to fix) to pre-root and install a version of 3.2.1r2 with a kernel build that is less than 10 like THIS ONE or THIS ONE. Then run Condi's All-in-One tool again to pre-root and install version 4.0.3r1a. Remember to take your time and read slowly, carefully, and completely before using the AiO tool. Good luck. BTW, I also bought the same Woot deal (my second Sony Tablet S). It is scheduled to arrive Monday and I will be doing the same pre-root and install.
Thanks, by chance do you know if there is a step by step howto on the condi All-in-One tool that is not full of insider only alphabet soup acronyms, I think I get the concepts, but I also know messing up can create a fairly expensive paperwieght. I have googled a few sets of instructions, but they seem to all inlcude steps like before running AIO make sure your ABC or XYZ is up to date, this may be fine for people that have done this a dozen times, but for those of us going down this road for the first time we have no idea of what an ABC or XYZ is, or even what it stands for, much less how to find out if they are up to date. It also seems most of these instructions take steps for granted, saying things like "copy file onto an SD" with no further explanation, such as must it be an SD card or will SDHC work, is file name or directory structure important, etc. I am not so much looking for handholding here as just some confirmation that my assumptions may be right, even such things as if these tools should be downloaded onto a computer running windows or onto the Tablet itself. With the woot sale I suspect that there will be many more people here soon with these sorts of questions, and many will be completely clueless, at least I do have 25+ years of running Unix like operating systems, and have been using Linux as my primary OS since the 2.0 kernel days, and to tell the truth am rather lost in all these messages full of acronyms and short hand descriptions.

In the thread that covers Condi's All-in-One tool, what you see is what you get. But to get a good gest of how to root the Sony Tablet S, I recommend you watch BluechipJ's VIDEO and read TheHurf's POST, which is the post BluechipJ was following in his video. I also recommend you watch the video and read the post several times before you actually attempt performing the root. Please note that the video and post are based on using All-in-One v2.7. Regarding "SD", a standard SD or SDHC card can be used, but it must be formatted FAT32. I used a SanDisk 32 GB SDHC card. Again, good luck.
Thanks, I found the videos last night, but not the message threads they were refering too. Together I am sure they will be most helpful
So I read the posts referenced earlier on, and I watched the video, but both start from a rootable ROM already on the tablet. Since the Woot ones come with 3.2 with the un-rootable kernel 10, I'm not sure how to do the intermediate step of getting the rootable 3.2.1 version on there?
The tablet is offering me an OTA update, but it says it's for 4.0.3 - it doesn't seem to give an option to go to an earlier version first. Does this mean that we're boned on these ones, or is there another way to get a rootable version on first?
It looks like the ALLinONE tool can't do anything for us unless we either root the tablet or make it rootable - am I missing something or looking at something the wrong way?

If you want to have root access on your tablet, DO NOT ALLOW THE TABLET TO PERFORM AN OTA UPDATE.
First, download the 3.2.1r2 and 4.0.3r1a files from the previously given links and store them on your computer. Next, download and install on your computer Condi's All-in-One tool. The most popular versions seem to be 2.7, 3.4, and 4.0. The previously mentioned video and post are based on version 2.7.
Now manually update the 3.2 to 3.2.1r2; don't not attempt to root it yet. Just copy the 3.2.1r2 file to a SD card (formatted FAT32) and install the card in your tablet. Power off (not sleep mode) your tablet. Power on your tablet into recovery mode by continuously holding down the VOL+ button and momentarily pressing the POWER button. Release the VOL+ button after you see the recovery mode logo. From the recovery mode's menu, select 2 Update system from SD card. (VOL+ and VOL- buttons are used to navigate the menu, POWER button is used to select the highlighted selection.) From the next menu, choose and select the 3.2.1r2 file. Allow the manual update to complete.
After your tablet has been updated to 3.2.1r2, leave the copied 3.2.1r2 file on the SD card and use Condi's All-in-One tool to root and reinstall 3.2.1r2 by following the directions given in the previously mentioned video and post.
Finally, after 3.2.1r2 is rooted and installed, delete the 3.2.1r2 file from the SD card and copy the 4.0.3r1a file to the SD Card. Again use Condi's All-in-One tool to root and install 4.0.3r1a by again following the directions given in the previously mentioned video and post.
To summarize: first update 3.2 to 3.2.1r2, then root and reinstall 3.2.1r2, then lastly root and install 4.0.3r1a. Good luck.
Thanks! It was late last night, and I must have been in the wrong headspace to be trying this, because I woke up in the middle of the night and thought "Oh, I bet I have to put it in recovery and flash that file..."
After that, everything went pretty smoothly along, just as everyone said. A couple places where the process varied from what the ALLinONE tool seemed to expect (the _hack_recovery.zip file doesn't get pushed, or rather gets pushed as "install.zip," which I guess is supposed to make it auto-flash when you enter recovery, but on mine it didn't, so I copied _hack_recovery.zip over manually and ran it with the same results). Otherwise very smooth. Everything looks great.
Thanks!
Cat: your link above with the 3 files (THIS,THIS and version 4.0.3r1a) to donwload, seems to have an issue, specifically the link to version 4.0.3r1a goes to a file with the exact same name as one of the "THIS" files, maybe a different copy of the same file as the link is different. Before making a major mistake I wanted to confirm that "this" is correct.
Ike
p.s. one more detail, should the zip files be copied to the SD card still zipped, or should they be unzipped to the SD?

I checked all the links. They are correct.
The first THIS ONE and the second THIS ONE are links to the same file stored at two different locations; that is why I wrote "or". Both files are signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042.001.zip, which is a rootable version of 3.2.1r2. The first was uploaded to 4shared by Condi, the second was uploaded to 4shared by me. I provided both links just in case one of us decides to delete our upload. After all, the files are eating up our allotted 4shared storage space, eh?
The link for the 4.0.3r1a file signed-nbx03_001-ota-120803002.zip links directly to Sony's servers.
The zip files are to be used as is. Do not unzip them. They are encrypted and signed files. If you attempt to unzip them using programs like 7zip or WinRAR, you will receive error messages saying the files are corrupted even though they are not corrupted.

Thank you for posting a much need FAQ.
A couple of hours ago, FedEx delivered my (second) Sony Tablet S from Woot. It is a model SGPT112US/S. About tablet says Android version 3.2, Kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1, Build number 1.10.001100001.
Above, you state 11000 (I assume you mean Build number 1.10.001100001) must be updated to 0035 (version 3.2 file signed-nbx03_001-ota-0035.001.zip) before updating to 0042 (version 3.2.1r2 file signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042.001.zip). I am curious, please explain why 11000 cannot be directly updated to 0042? Why the need for the intermediate 0035 update?
Like i said in an ealier post, I planned on updating 3.2 to 3.2.1r2, then rooting and reinstalling 3.2.1r2, then rooting and installing 4.0.3r1a. Is my plan with error? Am I wrongly advising others to do the same?

Not too sure with US but have had a user woth Mexico and had to install 0035 3.2.1 before 0042 3.2.1r2 as installation would abort. If it works without 0035 than thats awesome but atleast the way I described It will 100% work :fingers-crossed:
I assume it must be done this way because 0035 is 3.2.1 and 0042 is 3.2.1R2???

rooting the nook for a child

i purchased 2 nook tablets for an 8 and 11 year old. im debating whether to not root it because i think it wil be easier for them to follow interface and the only downside i see is having to pay for apps that may be free on amazon or play store. can i have some input here? is there a super easy rooted rom that a child can follow? or are there many free aps if i just keep it as an out of box nook. thanks so much guys, these are the 1st gen nook tablets not the hd
Rooting just opens up the device. You'll still have full access to the stock interface and BN app store and what have you.
You can make a really child friendly user imterface with a rooted device running an alternate launcher. That way you can make different home screen with the apps you want them to use easily accessable.
Give it a go! It's really easy to go back should you want to.

thanks i dread having to do the whole sd card ota block thing again and havent done it in about a year. is there a good video out there to walk me through step by step again for the ota block? and can someone recommend the best barest bones rom to root afterwards to make it as easy for a child to use as possible?
and i think i had trouble the last time because only a certain size sd card could be used. wasn't it just the 2 or 4 gb that worked? thanks and sorry for all the questions. just have to get this done tonight so i can fedex it to texas to get there in time for xmas.
A rooted nook is just marginally better than a stock nook in terms of access to more apps, but might be more confusing to kids since it has two coexisting interfaces. You would be better off sticking with stock or go all out android with full-fledged CM10.
I think the rooted stock NT is loads better than than the true stock. LOADS! Had the stock reader dealt better with my side loaded books I wouldn't have installed CM10 internally.
I agree that the double interface can be a bit confusing but to kids that age it shouldn't be much of a problem.
The OTA block is just a process of a few clicks from within the NT hidden settings app.

im trying to use the same albert video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zbT1Fj38nE, but the file doesnt even seem to be there anymore, and his updated video shows how to create a root v4 card. im totally confused. do you still need to block otas? and if so is there another link that shows that step by step. im ready to just send these back and forget the whole thing
No need for any video!
There are a couple of ready-made root images that are almost automatic. Burn the card, pop it in, install zip from card and you're rooted. Go to Google Play (it may show up as "market" at first and make sure you have updated version of NT Hidden settings to block OTA. It could not be much easier! If can watch a film on your DVD player you can do this without instruction video!
Brian's root (that I havetried once and really liked!): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488035
Alberts (that I have also used several times and like as well): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21275927#post21275927
---------- Post added at 06:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:39 PM ----------
And to expand a little:
1. Root the Tablet following the instructions in the root method you choose
2. Go to Google Market/Play and search for NT Hidden Settings
3. Open NT Hidden settings. Tap on "Hacks". When the prompt comes up "Allow" root access. You now get to a new menu where you can chhos Block OTA, Done!
Basic rooting instructions:
1. Download image file
2. Download imaging software if you don't already have it. (I like WinImage. I keep it in a folder and put my various image files in the same folder to make them easy to find)
3. Use your imaging software to burn a sd card. Albert's image will fit on a small card. I use a 1 GB, but I think smaller ones will do as well. Brian's image needs a larger card. I'm not sure how large, but the instructions probably tells you!
4. Boot to your sd card and follow the instructions for the method you have choosen. There are step by step instructions in both of the methods I have linked to, and probably others as well!
5. Done!

thank you so much for this help, figured it would be a slam dunk from here but when i try and unzip brians ntsdcard image file it says its corrupted and when i try and run alberts 32 diskimager it says it cant computer it. ive reinstalled and rebooted 3 times. can someone else try and open these file to se if its just my computer? dont know why it would be. or is there another work around? i heard he just sells the bootdisks. maybe thats the way to go. thanks again for all your help
I downloaded Albert's package. My virus protection alerter me, but that's probably because of the scripts that do need to be in that package, so I ignored that (I trust Albert!).
I then unzipped that into anew folder.
Inside that folder I find Wini32DiskImager, and I just open it from within that folder. (I realize I was mistaken in my previous post, This is the disk imager I prefer to use even though I've used others as well)
The program just opens in a small window. In the "choose file box" you automatically get directed to the folder you opened up from. That's why I keep my images there. Pick the one you want (you'll jut have one unless you've added)
Click "Write" when you've made sure the sd-cards drive letter is the one in the top right box.

I have now downbloaded and unszipped Brians file as well. Totally problem free!
What are you using to unzip? I use 7-zip.
By the way, I can now see that it looks like Brian's image needs a 2 GB card.
And for clairfication, you don't actually have to install Win32DiskImager. Just open it from within the folder!

Check the folder. That dll should be in the folder. It is in mine (the one I created just now). Are you really opening the program from within the folder?
The simplest and best rooting instruction I've found is one provided by liquidzoo's here.
I'd also suggest that before rooting the NT, you make a backup of your NT current software using the backup option of the same Recovery program that you will use to install the rooting mods.
If you have problem writing disk image with Win32DiskImager, you can use DiskImage_1_6_WinAll.exe instead.

We'll learn soon enough the moment the kids want some recently released game apps and find out they can't have them because they are not compatible with 2+ year-old Android Gingerbread which is what the stock ROM is based on.

You are getting your terminology confused as well. Asking what is the best barest bones ROM to root is incorrect.
To root means you give the nook superuser access which in turn allows you to load play store, apps, new launcher, and any SU related functions.
A ROM is a fully functioning version of android. IE: CM 7(GB), CM 9(ICS), CM 10(JB). It automatically has root access built in.
As for loading a ROM due to worrying about the kids and the interface, stock nook sucks...period. My 8 y/o has had zero issues with either cm 7 or cm10. Do yourself and them a favor and put at least CM 7 but preferably CM 10 on it.

My sons are 8 and 12. Trust me, your kids won't have a bit of trouble with the CM10 interface. One of the nice extras in CM10 is that you can configure profiles to block them from getting into apps you don't want them to -- like settings, email, etc... Also, you can PIN-protect the Play Store so that they don't accidentally purchase anything.

Since the OP will be using two NTs I'd suggest building the CM10 SD card from scratch (using the info and tools posted at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/how-to-guide-bootable-cm7cm9cm10-sdcard-for-nook-tablet/ and which I have provided a summary digest here), since there have been reports of NTs running the precooked CM10 SD image having identical MAC addresses and hence not able to concurrently access a same WiFi network (in this case the OP's household WiFi network).
I'm not saying rooted stock is as good as for example CM10. Not at all! CM 10 is awsome, and user interface is really nice!
But for a user that is intimidated by even the simple rooting process putting CM10 internally should not be even considered at this point. Thankfully the sd version of CM runs just as smooth as the internal install (at least it does from my 8GB Sandisk class 4) so that could certainly be an option as soon as the OP has figured out how to use the disk image writer! Yesterday even that was troublesome.
What I'm saying (if not straight out in my previous posts) is that rooted stock certainly is not bad! It depends on the kids and what they are used to if it will be "enough". For the kids near me (ages 4, 8,5 and 14) it certainly would! The bigger ones are girls that read a lot and apart from reading, watching Youtube videos and surfing (reading fashion blogs...) they are happy with a few cute games. Maybe if they had been boys and/or had tech savvy parents they would have asked for more, but they don't.
Either way, let's try to help the OP as well as we can!

i think it was the winzip that was screwing me up. i used 7zip and it opened right up and i burned it onto the sd card. then after i powered off i held the n button and the N button and i was only brought to a screen that said so you want to factory reset. isnt that the way to boot up? it didnt seem to recognize the unziped ntboot file. thanks
Try to just boot up (from completely turned off) without holding any buttons. If you do need to keep the "n" pressed down at first, that's just for a few seconds and then let go. Some people need to keep the Tablet turned off and insert apowered USB cable (menaing it's coneected to the charger, not computer) to get it to boot from sd-card. No buttons pressed! I have never needed that myself, but I hear many others do.

Root LG Optimus Fuel LGL34C

If anyone has picked up the new LG Optimus Fuel #LGL34C , & doesn't know, it CAN be rooted. I picked up one at Wal Mart last week for $30. I mean, a dual-core Kit Kat 4.4 LG device for $30 - I couldn't pass it up for Dev purposes. Now if I could only unlock the bootloader, lol. It doesn't even boot into Recovery, Bootloader, Download, or Fastboot. I'm sure someone will break it wide open soon.

Yes, I've been trying all kinds of methods, but none of them seem to work. Since the phone is so new, there's not much activity surrounding it, but we will see.

Tagging along because I picked up one of these from Walmart over the weekend. My main phone went missing and I needed to get something going quickly. Couldn't believe they had an Android 4.4 device for $30. Of course if it could be rooted and some custom ROM's be loaded I'd love to tinker with it.

Has anyone been able to get WiFi tether to work on this phone?
I've tried a bunch of different versions of WiFi tether for root users, with a variety of different settings. Usually I get tethering started with errors, but the log file is always blank.
Edit: I've gotten as far as being able to see the network in ad-hock mode. But can't connect to it from my computer.
Update:
I bought WiFi Tether Router in the playstore. Works great.
found bootloader

Hey I have a rooted LG Optimus Fuel and I think I did something to break the WiFi because it won't turn back on at all.. I downloaded MAC Spoofer and changed my MAC address one time then changed it back to default and ever since then WiFi would not turn back on at all.. Im only posting here because this is a fairly new phone and this thread seems to have the most activity about this device.. Please if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

I use Barnacle Wifi Tether, you can download it from the play store. Sometimes it gets hung up and you have to stop and start it again. Other than that it works for me. Would like to see some custom roms and recovery soon for this phone. seems like it has alot of potential.time will tell..
I seem to have accidentally "repurposed" my home button to something else while I was fooling with a /system file. If someone could help that would be great. Even if it was an attacment of a copy of the stock /system folder and all of its sub(directories/folders/files). Actually that would be preffered.
Either way, any and all help is appreciated.

Hi. Can someone confirm this for me? Does this phone, LG Optimus Fuel, use a battery labeled as "LG BL-44JH"?

Mine does. However it is a net10 variant, I cannot confirm nor deny that any other variants, such as Straight Talk, does or does not have that model number on the battery.

LG Optimus Fuel L34C - How To Add Your Own Ringtones
LG Optimus Fuel L34C - How To Add Your Own Ringtones
.
How to add your own MP3 ringtones to a LG Optimus Fuel L34C phone from a Windows PC. This will also probably work on most other LG android smartphones, but I haven't tried it.
.
Any MP3 file can be used as a ringtone, even a whole song. There is no limit to the file size.
.
.
Plug USB data cable into the Windows PC USB port. You can use the charger cable for this, once you disconnect it from the charger plug (If it is the type that unplugs from the charger plug, otherwise you will need a USB to micro-USB data cable).
.
Plug micro USB cable end into L34C phone (The L34C phone should be turned on and on the main screen).
.
Wait for the "Select USB Connection Method" screen to come up on the L34C phone. Choose "Media Sync (MTP)".
.
-On the Windows PC, start the Windows File Explorer.
-Go to the top of the menu tree in Windows File Explorer and select "My PC" or "This PC"
-On the right window pane, next to the C: drive icon, a phone icon should appear with the name of your phone. Double-Click on it.
-Now you should see two selections for the L34C phone, "internal storage" and "SD card". Double-Click on "SD card".
-If there is an "Android" folder, click on it. Otherwise, create a folder called, "Android" (without the quotes).
-Inside the "Android" folder, create a folder called, "media" (without the quotes).
-Inside the "media" folder, create a folder called, "ringtones" (without the quotes).
-Inside the "ringtones" folder, create a folder called, "audio" (without the quotes).
.
The finished folders should look like this (Uppercase and lowercase letters should also match):
.
/Android/media/ringtones/audio/
.
Add any MP3 ringtone files to the "audio" folder you have created on the SD card.
.
.
When finished, disconnect the data cable from the L34C phone.
.
If you go to your phone ringtones list on the LG phone, your added ringtones should appear at the top of the list under "MY RINGTONES", above the "LG RINGTONES" list.
