My friend got a Thunderbolt, he wants to root. I'm gonna help him since this is his first Android, but I seen recently something bout an update coming out for it. Should he wait till after the update to root?
Any update that comes out, im sure the developers here will have a work around to install it even if you are rooted. To be honest they may even have the update before its officially released to the public. I know i use to get early updates all the time on my OG Droid, even while rooted.
I wouldn't recommend it. Normally I would root as soon as possible then developers will have the root ready update in quickly. If he waits for the update he might find that root has been patched (knock on wood)

Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply!

You should be hesitant about using official upgrades -- for example with the Evo 4G -- an official update can patch holes that make rooting possible. If I were you I would root immediately and wait for the XDA devs to bring you any updates (aka gingerbread) that you are interested it. CM7 is Gingerbread already so once the kernel source is released by HTC you will be all set to upgrade the TB to an official CM nightly. I am by no means privy to any special information but I would expect a near-perfect build of CM7 for the TB within 2 weeks.
The only thing that might not get baked in right away is 4G support. Granted this would suck but it wouldn't be a deal breaker IMHO. I've heard that 4G support for the TB will be much quicker than 4G support for the EVO. So even LTE support shouldn't take that long.
I'd root now to at least have s-off in case the start changing up

I would go ahead and root now to make use of better battery life from debloating etc.
I would keep an eye on news of ota updates from Verizon vs. Any devs who are getting close to an one-click method for rooting like z4root. Rooting this device still isn't very easy. Lots of people are struggling with even the simplest methods.
Thanks for all the replies! Going to help him root it some night this week.
I would advise your friend he should read up on rooting and make sure that's what he wants to do. If he's not on the forums himself, he probably is not very skilled with rooting and roms, and if you bust his phone, he will not be happy. Make sure he knows the full benefits and disadvantages before handing you his new phone.
It will be a while before the custom roms are 100% stable so is there any advantage to the current root method or is it better to wait for the HTC to release their updates to the 3D?
Root now... It'll only take like 10 minutes..
Also at the pace these Devs are operating at, ROMs will become stable fairly fast.
Like my help? Thank me
Only thing we have to wait for htc is to change the bootloader, nothing else...
Considering all the current roms that are there are just modifications of the STOCK rom and devs haven't branched out much yet, those roms you're seeing are nearly as stable or more so than stock depending on which rom and how much change was done.
When the AOSP roms start hitting with no sense and most of the HTC stuff stripped out, then it gets interesting.
Now, to your original question, is it worth it to root now or wait for HTC. HTC has promised UNLOCKED bootloaders. Nobody is quite sure WHAT HTC will deliver. Unencrypted? S-OFF? Will they track or not? They will NOT provide you root. NOR is there any guarantee that the current methods of gaining root/s-off will work on that rom update if/when it comes.
I chose NOT to wait. I didn't want to end up like some of the EVO folks that took updates that can no longer root.
i wanna know why everyone thinks aosp will take forever to get stable. more then half the developers in the market all have 3vo's and Come on people, WE JUST GOT S OFF A MONTH EARLIER THEN HTC PROMISED US! give the guys credit.
I'm not saying the first batch of aosp roms will be 100% but it will not take long. soon as aosp hits the shelves things are going to be turning for the better.
By the time HTC gets off there asses and deliver we will all have cm7, miui, deck or whatever your preference is ALREADY on our phones.
I would go ahead and root. At least you can try out some new kernels and oc it.
Your gonna get unlocked with HTC but not rooted, why wait for something your going to do anyway?
um there is allways an advantage to getting s-off via the hacked way cause im shure htc will have some kind of stupid catch to s-off
I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace, and am seriously considering rooting it.
I've done a fair bit of research on it, and have found a few very detailed tutorials on going through the process.
I'm just wondering how common it is, it seems most people on Android forums have rooted their devices, and I haven't really come across anyone who has managed to stuff it up.
So, pros and cons?
why you should root it:
1. you can pretty much customize every part of your phone (software-wise obviously). while rooting does not do the actual customization, it opens you up to a variety of options (when rooted, you can flash roms and kernels that can significantly increase performance and/or battery life; not to mention all of the themes that you can apply, a good place to start would be here)
2. because you can (this may sound stupid but i believe this is true; i think android phones are meant to be rooted )
why you shouldn't root it:
1. you will lose the warranty that came with your phone
2. you can mess up your phone if you do not know what you are doing (when i say this, i am talking about messing with system files, not following the directions when you apply a modification; of course, this would not be a problem as long as you pay close attention to what you are doing)
in my opinion, i think you should

I agree, that's why I'm looking at doing it, I guess I just want to here from a few users first hand on their experiences with it before I go through with it...
root, root
I would recomend that you root your device. I did my first root to the phone I am using now and I am glad I did, I am able to remove a lot of the carrier bloatware that slows the phone down. Now it runs faster. As the other post said you void your warrenty when you root and if you do not follow instructions you can brick your phone. Anyhow take the plunge and root it you will be glad you did.

I know the feeling man, just upgraded to an android galaxy mini from my htc gene, that tough little bastard served me well for two years before it succumbed. Was thinking of rooting but you know how it is with new phone jitters, am not ready to start cutting into its software setup just yet. I'll take my time getting used to this platform before rooting. My reasons for rooting would mainly be to upgrade to gingerbread and delete the stock apps that came with the phone that I barely use like opera 5 -since I use opera 6- and also to be able to overclock the cpu to around 800mhz. Does anyone here think this could improve mkv playback for 480p videos? I can't figure out why mkv videos are such a pain to deal with. What is it about the container that makes it quite a challenge to android
any way to delete stock apps i don't use at all without the root? i own an xperia ray but there is nothing happening for this phone considering rooting.

I was in your place but after rooting my htc desire i just cant stop having fun with it
Seems everyone tends to lean towards rooting, I think I might spend a couple more weeks getting familiar with my phone, then go through with it
I have just bought my first android phone a week ago and I'm wondering if I should root or not. Based on everyone's thoughts I really think rooting is the best option specialy because my courrier modded the phones rom with a lot of bulls**t that I can't delete
But first I got some questions to ask:
1. If I install another rom on my phone will it remain rooted? Ex. After installing CM7 the phone will remain rooted? Also if I decide to go back to factory rom will it still remain rooted?
2. Is there any way to "unroot" it? In case I need to contact the warranty I could "unroot" and send it back?

1. Yes, yes, and yes.
2. Yes, but that procedure is more complicated. I'll defer the technical explanation to someone less noobish than I am.

You kinda just have to look around, because everyone likes something different...plus you have to keep in mind that ROMs are specific to the phone. If you like a plain vanilla Android experience, Cyanogenmod (currently #7) is extremely popular. It's a little too bare-bones for my taste, but many people love it. If you have an HTC phone, like I do, and you like HTC Sense but hate how bloated it is, there are tons of custom roms out there based on Sense. Just be careful, again, that you download a ROM for your phone model. I have an HTC Sensation, and I use LeeDroid's Sensational ROM. Some others to check out might be InsertCoin and Revolution HD, but there are tons out there.
Happy flashing! Let us know what you end up trying and how you like it.

ROOT. You will go through the process and if you read and follow every step correctly, you will ask yourself "thats it?" it really is the best thing you can do for your phone. If you want more battery life-- root. If you want simplicity-- root. If you want the latest version of Android (which really makes a difference in overall user experience)--root. Hell, if you want to have something that looks like an iPhone--root.
Go for it. Make sure to read and if you are comfortable with it do it and you will be glad you did.
The greatest feature of the AOS is that we are able to root our phones thanks to some very helpful people. I’ve temp rooted my Rezound because I am waiting on the official Android 4.0 from Verizon. But we’re in the middle of the 2nd quarter and I’m starting to get impatient. I have the Eris, and I can easily install ROMs on it. I also have the Driod 2 which is a pain to install ROMs. For those who have rooted their phones and place ICS on their phone, are you worried about something going wrong with the phone and not being able to return it? Should I sack up and root it? Or would you recommend that I remain on the sidelines until its safe?
ICS Rom .:. Flash. One. Now.

(We're still in Q1 unitl March 31st! And I'm running an ICS rom, alternating between Ineffabilis-Deus v1.02 and Senseless 4.0.3 v1.0.) Well first off, the official ICS from Verizon looks to be a long ways away, so if you want ICS now, I'd definitely flash an ICS rom. And no, I'm not worried at all about something malfunctioning with my phone and not being able to return it. You can almost always return to stock, so as long as you can do that, you're safe. And besides, most of the Verizon reps have no idea what an unlocked bootloader is/does, let alone know how to check for one. So you should be able to return your beast (Rezound) to Verizon if something goes wrong with it. There's my two cents.
Final Verdict: Flash an ICS rom. Whether it's Senseless or has Sense 3.6, that's up to you.
Hope I helped!
Waiting until probably May or so is not an option especially when we have such nice ROMs coming out now.
I'm running Joel's ICS Sense ROM and it's one of the nicely polished ROMs I've ever used.
I also used the Desense tool to get Nova Launcher so it looks a little bit like ICS and I gotta say, I'm extremely happy where I'm at right now. Go for it.
I say go for it too and I'm not even running ICS yet.
I am waiting for my favorite themes etc to become available for ICS before switching and I'm in no hurry anyway as I absolutely LOVE the ROM I am currently running and don't really care about ICS.
I use a couple nexus phones at work and I see no real advantage whatever to ICS.
If you root your phone it will start to fall apart. All of the ROMs will then steal your personal information and make it difficult to go to the bathroom. Then there's the issue with hand warts that people are getting with these ICS ROMs that have come out.
Do it. Stop questioning it. It's worth it.

The devs have done a great job, I used to have a DroidX and never really got into rooting and so forth, with this Rezound I told myself I would dive in head first and I am glad I did, everyone here at XDA, devs and members are very helpful and i learned everything i needed to know to learn everything from unlocking and rooting to flashing roms, and it is a breeze for the most part, always gonna be some bumps in the road, but i would DEFINITELY GO FOR IT
I decided to do some extensive research on the following questions and while some were answered, most weren't.
For those of you who may or may not remember the good ol' days with the htc hero..where one click roots were common. Apps like z4root plunged me into the fantastic world of rooting. Now rooting is much more difficult, as I have come to determine with other sources. I am eligible for an upgrade and am going to get the HTC Evo 4G LTE. I would like to root it but keep the original stock rom as it has all these awesome features that come along with it. Unfortunately I heard that you can't get OTA software updates while rooted. I don't know if this means it just won't allow me to do it or if it'll brick my phone trying. This is an issue I haven't come across before as I had the HTC hero and it no longer received software updates. I did however see that some people said developers offer these updates with some additional features right out of the box. Does that mean people will be having sense roms perfected so to speak when the OTA software updates come out? Because that then leaves me with the question of having to unroot my phone. On another note z4root claims to be able to unroot phones instantly no matter how you rooted it. I really do want to root it because I'd like to take advantage of the apparent good features of sense...while deleting that annoying bloatware and having wifi tether. Until that EVO then gets to a point of dinasaur speed..at which I am fully ready to jump into Cyanogenmod. They have truly won me over. So just wondering if this is possible. Please feel free to correct any noob mistakes or wrong information as I am learning and need to continue to do so. Oh and last thing...if it's true that developers will be taking sense roms and adding stuff into it so people like me can have those new updates with root still..where would I go about finding such updates? Websites..etc. Thank you!
If you want to root it you can do it through HTC or go for s-off depending on your hboot.
Either way after an ota comes out there will be the updated stock from posted here if you want to get the updates. With HTC dev to unlock you get relocked if you take the ota's.
S-off you never want to take ota's as it may change your hboot and you may lose your ability for s-off in the future.
Also check out the stickies at the top of the forums for info on rooting the evo lte.

Lot of different questions compacted into that large paragraph. Not clear on which questions you want answered and in what priority. I'll do my best to throw out some answers.
First, comparing the EVO LTE to the Hero will result in a bit of confusion. If z4root worked on the Hero, then the Hero did not have write protected internal memory. In the world of security, otherwise known as methods to prevent root access, internal memory write protection is one of the more complicated methods used on modern cell phones. Due to the complexity of the internal memory write protection, there are very few people and groups capable of reverse engineering and bypassing this security, which is why there aren't very many tools, usually only one or two. Prior to this internal memory write protection, back in the z4root days, methods of gaining root access were much simpler.
Now, to the modern day HTC devices with the internal memory locked down. HTC offers and official tool, after many users requested, that allows *most* of the internal memory to be unlocked and root access gained. There are some 3rd party methods of internally unlocking the memory, but these are rare due to the required complexity.
In regards to applying OTA updates, other than the internal memory locking controlled by the bootloader, as mentioned above, OTA updates have charged relatively little to the days of the Hero. All OTA updates remove root access, but in a very simple manner by changing permissions. This can easily be restored. On the other hand, HTC OTA updates sometimes will update the bootloader, which can have the impact of relocking the internal memory, or patching a 3rd party memory unlock solution.
All frustrations with gaining root access should be directed at the carrier and manufacturer as they have intentionally devoted time and labor to developing these methods and they are the only parties with the power to directly change the process.
Hope that information helps fill in a few gaps on the changes that have occurred from the Hero to the EVO LTE in regards to root access/security!

Go there and you can use the tool to unlock. As previous user posted, it allows most, NOT all, of the internal storage/memory/partitions to be written to.
You will void your warranty with HTC doing this though, however, most sprint stores from what I have read, don't know that you used the tool to unlock unless they specifically check for it in the HBOOT.
If you are on the 1.13 software, then, you can use the LazyPanda method to root and obtain full S-OFF (all paritions unlocked). If on 1.22, your only option at this point is to use the official HTC dev unlock method.
If you are on 1.15 use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1690919
Its HTC dev unlock and all completely automated. It will unlock your phone, put on a custom recovery, and root teh stock ROM
If you have 1.13 run lazy landa to S-OFF
Thanks guys will do!
