I am looking to buy an E3D. Just a few days ago a guy over on the OG Evo made a recovery just like the Amon Ra one. I don't know how many of you have used it, but I like it over the clockwork one, just my personal opinion. I wanted to see if anyone else would like to have it. He said he could make one for us, but he needed some help from an E3D user. Since I don't have one now, I can't help out. Just wanted to see if someone else could. Check this post out and this is his thread. If you are interested let him know. There are some screen shots near the end of the thread.
I used amon on my OG evo and loved it. Personally, I use TWRP on my Evo 3D and don't think it is significantly different from amon. If you like amon, you'll probably feel very at ease with TWRP.
Once you go TWRP you'll never go back

TWRP is so much better than either Amon Ra or Clockwork. my favorite feature is selecting the zips you want and having it flash them all and reboot all in one shot. Try that with Amon Ra.
TWRP for life!
Ok cool, I was researching recoveries and didn't find that for some reason. All I found was clockwork. I hope to make the switch soon to a 3D.

Well I got my E3D and found out it has the latest hboot, which kind of blows. Now onto trying the work around to a full root for it. I have a lot of reading ahead of me today. If anyone has any tips or could help me out, that would be great.

Why? Just curious. What do you not like about "revolotionary [SIC]" that AmonRa does better?

Revolutionary? The would be a root method not a recovery.

TWRP for the EVO 4G. This way you can play around with it and see if you like it.

I used amon for my OG EVO, been using TWRP since rooting my 3D and it's great.
As for his requests of a recovery.img and a tester, all the stock files are available in the development section and there's never a shortage of testers around here.

If you use the hboot1.5 guide youll be fine...Flashing is the same as before with the exception of kernels and kernel based roms...Even then the process for flashing takes seconds..it really is easy to use...
From what I have read, you have to flash a rom and then a custom kernel, even if the rom has one. Something about it being protected and won't take if just the rom was flashed. I am still reading before I start the process. I normally run a custom kernel instead of the stock one that comes with a rom anyways.

Sorry to say but you must not be on HBOOT1.5 AND S-ON like anyone with the flashing issues will be....
all you have to do if you are HTC UNLOCKED AND ROOTED IS and USB DEBUGGING IS ON... as follow's
1. unzip this RAR file which I have just now uploaded to your desktop
[I say there cause I will be doing commands and if you change the location you will have to do different ones...]
(most of the files I got off of a help for 1.5 flashing I DID replace CWR with TWRP)
2. if you have not ever installed the HTC EVO 3D driver's I left them in the folder please install it now.... if you have them installed SKIP THIS!
3. click start run CMD,then "cd Desktop\evo" then
"adb reboot bootloader" wait for HBOOT SCREEN IT IS WHITE...then,
"fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" wait for completion then FYI only need to do this once! then
"fastboot boot twrp.img"
you are now in custom recovery TWRP and you can flash ANY ROM & or KERNEL and it will flash just fine but you will always have to repeat these commands anytime you want to flash a kernel and I suggest the same for roms since 99% of them have custom kernels. don't depend on your reboot to recovery OPTION IT STILL WILL NOT WORK U NEED TO USE THESE COMMANDS HBOOT1.5 USERS!
this is the repeatable commands that are to be done in command prompt
cd Desktop\evo
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
done!
suggestion is to do the commands once then leave the CMD prompt window open since you can just go up and down on the keyboard key to rekey it over and over again...
if this has helped you please leave a Thanks! also this folder is preset up so ADB doesn't need to be fully working on your pc for it to work since ADB IS INCLUDED.
enjoy got any questions shoot me a pm if i don't reply back here... or do both if your anxious.
So from what I read, even if I can manually go into recovery (bootloader then select recovery or just reboot into recovery) without the commands, it still won't flash correctly? You have to do the commands listed above no matter what? If so o'well, it makes the process a lil bit longer than normal and makes me be tethered to my desktop when I do this process, but hey it's better than not being able to run anything period.

This guide will leave you with S-on, but you can still flash any ROM, kernel, theme or most anything you want.
The limitation with HTC's unlock method is that the boot partition is not flashable from recovery. This means that Kernels and ROM's with custom kernels must be flashed from Fastboot. It's easy, just see the 2nd post for the guide.
There have also been a couple reports of difficulty applying HTC's unlock to new phones that shipped with the updated software preloaded.
During the process, and after this output,
Code:
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.152s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
(bootloader) unlock token check successfully
OKAY [ 0.006s]
finished. total time: 0.159s
Nothing happens on their phone and the remain locked.
Thanks to lchupacabras for posting about this and his solution. Run the 2.08 RUU and then retry the HTC unlock, hopefully this works for everyone. I will do some more looking into this when I get a chance. My phone took a swin today and I'm awaiting a replacement, good thing i'm insured.

A short video of navigating from Unlocked Hboot 1.50 to TWRP Recovery
This is only for people stuck with HBOOT 1.50 and currently unable to root any other way. If you can't wait any longer to flash some ROM's then give this a shot. Please read the whole post before you start.
I'm posting this mostly because the info is on this site, but seems to be convoluted and spread out. I have gotten a few pm's from people asking for help with this after discussing it in other threads, so, here it is. I take no credit for any of these files, or any of the development. I'm just trying to get a good guide posted in one spot for people to use and learn from. I have tested this on my girls phone and everything is working great.
To start, you need to follow HTC's steps to unlock, so go here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
It should be mentioned that HTC's unlock will factory reset ur phone. So if you have texts or anything else you want to backup, do it now.
Here are the required downloads to get you started with HTC's Unlock if you don't already have adb or HTC sync setup.
Android SDK
HTC Sync 3.0.5551
Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
If you tried these links over the past couple days, and they were bad, try again, they are re-hosted on mediafire for now, sorry for the trouble.
After you've followed their instructions, you can come back here to get your custom recovery and Superuser setup.
So, you got ur Bootloader unlocked via HTC, now, on your phone, go to menu > settings > applications > development and check the box net to usb debugging.
Now, here are the rest of ur required downloads for the next steps:
su 2.3.6.3
TWRP Recovery
Thanks to Brandas for the above version of TWRP that works with HTC's unlock. He posted it in a thread last week, I just tested it and am posting it here.
Here is where he originally posted it, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16964833&postcount=223
Take both the su.zip and recovery.img files and put them in your sdk tools folder.
Then, get in your command prompt from ur sdk tools folder.
Small tip, with windows 7, if you hold down the shift key and right click on ur sdk tools folder, the 4th option is to open a command window there. It's much easier then manually navigating there.
Click to collapse
Now do the following in ur command prompt, hitting enter after each command.
Code:
adb push recovery.img /sdcard/
And,
Code:
adb push su-2.3.6.3.zip /sdcard/
Then,
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Ur phone will go to fastboot and should look like the after picture above. Now you can flash the twrp recovery, so do,
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
It will ouput something like this,
Code:
sending 'recovery' <5068 KB>... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... OKAY
finished. total time: 11.355s
Now you have twrp recovery, so you can navigate to it. On ur phone, use the power button to pick bootloader, then scroll down to recovery and pick that. You will then be booted into recovery.
Here you can pick "install zip" and then pick the "su-2.3.6.3.zip"
It will flash, the you can pick "back to main menu", then "reboot system now"
You will boot back up and have working Superuser. I have had no trouble with Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Quick Boot or any other app that requires root. Before you do too much, it would be good to go back to recovery and do a Nandroid backup. Always best to get one ready before you start modding anything.
There is a limitation with HTC's unlock, recovery does not have permission to write to the boot partition, this is where the kernel goes. What this means is that you can't flash a kernel through the normal recovery. Which also means that you can't flash a ROM that requires a custom kernel. There are two ways that I know of to work around this. One is to just flash the kernel(boot.img) from fastboot, the other, and easier way is to boot recovery from fastboot and just do everything from there.
Please see 2nd post for ROM and Kernel flashing instructions
How to Flash Any ROM or Kernel You Want
Just in case ur wondering, yes you can flash Cyanogen Mod, did my girls as soon as it was available.
You can get recovery to flash kernels for you, you just have to have fastboot boot up recovery for you. It's very simple really, and thanks again go to Brandas for pointing it out. I'm just putting it here for everyone to use.
This method will allow you to simply flash any ROM you choose without extracting any boot.img's and worrying about flashing from recovery and then going to fastboot. It's kind of a one stop shop for all ur needs.
To do this, you need to have already followed the instructions in the first post. So you are rooted and have the necessary files for adb installed. You should also have your ROM or kernel of choice on ur sd card.
This is also assuming that the recovery.img you downloaded from the first post is still in your sdk tools folder. If it isn't, now is the time to put it back there.
Now, all you have to do is get back in ur command prompt from ur sdk tools folder and do,
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Once it says fastboot usb, you can do,
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Now it will boot you into TWRP and you can flash whatever kernel you like, or just flash a ROM with a custom kernel already built in. It all works and everybody's happy.
I will post a quick vid to go along with this in a few. Hope this helps.

From the 2 minute mark on, it's just booting up and showing that the kernel version did in fact change, nothing interesting to see really. Sorry for the blurry video, shot in the dark with my evo 3d, so ya know it's gonna be bad, lol.
Fantastic guide!
I wouldn't recommend the Synergy Nightlies for your girlfriend, I'd go with a more stable less "exotic" ROM. Synergy is a playground that Virus/TrevE/Ziggy have fun in, and sometimes they break stuff
Thanks
Synergy may be a bit much, but its running good for now. I just used it cause that's what I run, and it was the only 2.3.4 based ROM I had on my laptop. We'll see what she has to say when I get home from work.

I'm sure most of you know, but I better mention it here. With HTC's unlock tool, you aren't fully unlocked. As you can see from my pic above, the phone is still s-on, and there are limitations because of this. Most notably is that you can't flash a new kernel. So, if you want to flash some rom's you'll need to stay with roms based on the 2.08.651.2 update so that everything will work properly. If you try to flash a different rom that requires a different kernel, the kernel will not actually flash, and you will likley have some broken features/apps.

Couple things...
1. Can you link to the original thread where the modified twrp is?
2. Im not so sure about the kernel issue you are describing. I know lots of people that are flashing my ROM with freeza's modded kernel and it works just fine. More than likely this perceived issue comes from the fact that people are trying to flash a kernel sourced on 2.3.3 with a 2.3.4 ROM causing the issue.

1) I can link the thread later tonight. It was in the general section, you can search Brandas' posts if ur really interested.
2) it is a real issue, but it won't be a big factor until the developers have source to make kernels from. You can flash a modified stock kernel, but if you flash a 2.3.3 ROM, the kernel won't change. You will still have the 2.3.4 kernel trying to run with the 2.3.3 ROM you flashed. I can get you some pictures tonight.

Wow, thats wierd!
Instead of flashing recovery though hboot you can also flash from SD Card to make it that much easier....
I have attached the twrp that you listed in the op in a flashable zip format.
Instead of doing the fastboot commands just place this zip on the root of sd card and reboot into hboot and it will scan it then flash it.
I tested it working 100%
Also, instead of messing around with Android SDK, Java, etc... you can just use the second attachment, it has all the needed files....

Just wanted to say that this is not true.
I took the plunge to test... Here is what I did....
1. Flashed 2.08.651. RUU. This put me at full stock locked bootloader etc etc etc...
2. Did HTC Unlock and used my files I posted a post up instead of installing all that stuff (I had it installed anyways but for simplicity for newbs I used those files to test)
3. After unlock I flashed the twrp you linked to the method that I noted above (in hbott 1.5).
4. Flashed an older series ROM of mine, Any 2.3.3 ROM would suffice but for obvious reasons I flashed CleanROM 1.3.
5. Confirmed that the kernel version DID change back to the 2.3.3 source kernel.
6. Downloaded No lights based on silver needle overclock then flashed it in recovery.
8. Downloaded set cpu and quadrant and set to my liking.
7. Profited!
Just saying!
EDIT: The only difference I can think of is I was S-OFF before this debacle. But I am not sure how that affects kernel... I will re-lock s-on and see if that makes a diff.
S off is needed to flash kernels. Your s off it worked fine for you. As it should. No need to test that one.

That's cool, but I find the fastboot method to be much quicker. I can push the files, boot to fastboot, flash, and boot to recovery in under a minute.
If you really want it easier, use flash image gui
Also, I didn't write HTC's instructions. They are meant to be dummy proof. I use adb to boot to fastboot, and of course I already have the sdk, we all should anyway.
But thanks for offering up more options for people, it will help more people understand what to do, and what's easiest for them.

Yeah, if you've had s-off before, it doesn't matter. I can make a video of me trying to flash a kernel to show what happens.
It sucks that HTC did this, but maybe they will release an update to this unlock that will help everyone out. Probably won't matter though, revolutionary will hopefully support 1.5 soon enough.

Which is best to use I know both have pro's and cons. But which one is best for hboot 1.5.
I know folks said TWRP broke up and support is no longer going on for it. Clockwork is still in the game on things. Anyways what do you prefer.
I currently have latest TWRP messed with it looks nice smooth so far. Anyways gonna give clockwork a shot.
I seen a few posts about this just curious with the hboot 1.5 which one is prefered for it.
ya know i wonder about that also.i have been on clockwork since the early hero days and i think i have had to ditch it one time for a rom i wanted cant remember it now,but its never gave me any issue that i can recall.sorry not much help at all and im on 1.4... the curiousity just caught my interest.

Seems to boil down to personal preference. I used Clockwork on my original EVO, and TWRP on my E3D. I agree that the TWRP 2.0 touch interface is a big leap, but they both get the job done.

Hboot 1.50 Unlocked/ Recovery issues
I'm on hboot 1.50 Htc Unlocked and I've tried both. It would be nice if the backups were compatible with each other. I did like the TWRP touch interface, but we all know that sometimes digitizers go bad, but then so do hardware buttons. After reading through the TWRP website I decided to just stick with CWM.
I am however having a difficult time installing anything other than CWM v4.0.1.4 (v5.0.2.0 is available) or TWRP 2.0 rc0.1 . Tried FlashImage, Fastboot, and Rom Manager. Tried the .zips and the .img files. Arrrrghh.

Hello! I used to be very engrossed in the modding community for the Rezound a few months ago. But because of a forced phone switch I haven't been in the loop for a while.
Well now I'm back on a Rezound and I was wanting to know a few things.
Fair warning. When I left we had just achieved S-off and were delving into the new things we could do from then on, so if my questions seem dated; I'm sorry.
Also, my phone atm is on stock ICS, I wanted to get a feel for everything again before I went and rooted it.
*Which are the most prominent ROMs right now? (Preferrably sense with beats)
*Do any of those ROMs have a working DSP Manager with Virtual room or ability to get it working on it?
*What is this whole GSM thing I'm seeing on some ROMs lists? Are we able to use the rezound easily overseas or on different networks now or something?
I have looked through some of the forums but haven't been able to find any concrete information, so I figured I would just post my own thread.
Thank you for your time and any replies!
The most prominent roms are any of the ones on the first two pages of the development sections. I know that neo includes a Beats mod in his AOSP roms which works as well as any stock beats you'll find in a sense rom. The DSP manager included with cyanogenmod is 100% functional as far as I can tell. And yes, we can use the rezound on AT&T (siul does MIUI and uses his rezound on AT&T) but I'm not sure as to what frequencies we have access to and if its HSPA or not.
Since you've been gone we received a global ruu that gives the rezound service over seas. The most prominent roms sense based are viperrez, newts one xxx, ecliptic rez and so on.. Those are just the ones I've tried. I'm running newts hybrid rom now and it's doing well though it's not as optimized as his one xxx rom

all the recoverys are about the same now. its up to you on what you want it to do. TWRP and CWMT are both great touch based recoveries. if you want more of the menu scroll classic way. go with AmonRA 3.15

It is. Installed it.
I think I'm all set now except for one thing. Is it normal now after you unlock and install a recovery for it to say TAMPERED? Last I saw that was when people were installing the leaked ICS RUUs.
The order of which I rooted my phone in case I did anything wrong was. Unlock bootloader with HTCDev, Phone restarted, let it load up then went into the menu and enabled Debugging again, shut it off. Reloaded fastboot. Then installed TWRP 2.3.3.0 using the All-in-one tool. After that my bootloader said TAMPERED.
Thanks again for all the help.

Tampered is ok. It just means there's a custom recovery installed. Every now and then TWRP has some issues flashing certain files just so you know, most likely you'll never see it, but just in case it keeps you from chasing your tail I mentioned it.
We're s off now, that's the big change for when you want to do some wild modification. But thanks to snuzzo there's no harm done in being s on it's easier now than it used to be.
Anything else, send me a PM if you'd like and we can catch up on gtalk.
So is your hboot 2.25 and your radio basebands end in .421r and .424r?

[SOLVED - See Post #9]
Hey everyone,
So, I have some experience with rooting/ROMs, bootloaders and recoveries, all specifically on my HTC Droid Incredible (Yep, the original). But that's long in the tooth these days, and getting rather difficult to stand the slower speeds and all.
I decided to pick up a used phone, in this case an HTC Rezound, to repair and serve as my default. Cracked digitizer, but that's an easy fix, and it works for the moment which is all that matters. Turns out there was one more problem with it - it doesn't boot Android. It gets stuck in a bootloop if you allow it to boot, but it does go to hboot if you boot it up and hold the VOL down key, as expected. I cannot boot into recovery.
I tried flashing the 4.03.605.2 RUU from AndroidPolice - same problem. So, I'm not sure where the issue lies. I'd like to start by just getting the phone back to stock, and booting into Android if anyone can help me. I should be able to do everything properly from there.
I'm not entirely certain if HBOOT is stock - it shows the Android on the skateboard at the bottom - I'm not sure if that's a custom HBOOT or not, and I can't seem to find any specific reference to it. It is LOCKED with S-ON, so, I've been assuming that it hasn't been tampered with too deeply, someone just hosed an upgrade and I'm not sure how to go about getting it fixed.
Any help is deeply appreciated.

You have to fastboot oem rebootRUU first
then fastboot flash zip PH98IMG.zip
you may have to flash the zip twice.

Yes, I do. Thank you, I'll check that out!
Like I was saying, I knew it wasn't bricked, I just didn't know how to go about doing it. I think I get where I need to go with that.

Flash a recovery in a zip right after you finish the ruu using the same method (no need for reboot).
To get root again you might want this: downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip

Ok, no such luck. I did the RUU flash and then tried rebooting, no go, tried reflashing from my SD after that, nothing. I'm not sure what to do now. :/
Update
Small update - I did the HTC bootloader unlock and successfully got Amon Ra flashed onto it. Now working on getting Android to boot. *sigh* This thing is a serious pain in the...
If I get it to work, I'll be sacrificing a ram, or at least some RAM. :fingers-crossed:
Still, I'm open to any suggestions or help anyone can offer. Thank you!
I would make a nandroid now and keep it as is for a bit just to make sure it functions okay.
Then if all is good flash a ROM!
I'm running ViperRez and it's very good. Doesn't seem to stream bluetooth media but all else is good. Very nice daily driver. There might be an update coming which will hopefully fix the bt steaming.

Heh, that would be doing things the SMART way. I'm going to do the unofficial CM9 which has BT streaming media, but not phone - sadly, something I'm much more interested in. I am wondering if I can't get the stock ICS or JB on there and just stick with that, since I do like using my BT headset. But since I've had no luck so far getting that to go on there, I think I'll take my chances with CM9 first, and go from there.
If I get that, I'll back it up thoroughly and then try my hand at putting the stock 4.03 on instead.
Solved!
Ok, so, I got CM9 booted!
The short of what I did was the following steps:
1) HTC Dev Bootloader Unlock
2) Installed Amon Ra
3) Installed CM9 using the S-ON instructions found at the site below - I can't link yet, so forgive me.
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885553
4) Letting the bootloader flash the Kernel failed, so I had to do it manually by following the instructions for S-ON below in case of a parsing failure:
Code:
http://www.androidauthority.com/rezound-android-4-0-4-ics-cyanogenmod-9-cm9-rom-unofficial-120696/
5) Boot and done!

Oh! I misread your last post above mine and thought you had gotten it back to stock.
Your issue was exactly what you figured out, that when you are s-on you need to flash the kernel separately after flashing a ROM or else you'll get stuck. If you s-off that will be automated but s-off makes it easier to brick your phone. I don't flash often so I'm staying s-on.
Sorry I misread your post, I could've let you know about that.

So, I have gone through the whole process of rooting my phone, unlocking it. I have TWRP on it, Titanium backup (thankfully), Goo Manager. It is S-on. I have 2.09 Hboot. My TWRP-jewel is 2.5.0.0. Ok, now onto my question, I am trying to get CM-10 to load but it doesn't go any further than the load screen. No matter what I try. I have even tried switching to JellyBAM but all to no avail. Can someone offer me tips as to what I may have done or be doing wrong? Thanks in advance
[Q] trying to put CM10 on my rooted phone
Forgive me if I put this in the wrong group, but I feel this is probably the right one for it. I have Hboot 2.09. I have TWRP. I have S-on. I want to put CM10 with Gapps onto my phone but every way I have tried, CM10 just sits there and loops around, the longest being an hour. I figured some time was possible, but come on. Over on Google+, people are telling me to flash this and flash that, fastboot this or that. I have no idea what they are trying to say to me. I am loving learning all of this but I need a little more explanation than just flash something. I realize that flash has something to do with commands. I am running windows 8 if that helps on my laptop. My TWRP version is 2.5.0.0. I don't know if my phone has gone through the latest update or not. Thanks for any help you can give me!
You have to install the kernel separately from the ROM since you're S-on. Click the link in my sig for more info.
You most likely have the newest touch panel driver, so you can only use ROM's based off the latest OTA, software version 3.16. Your touchscreen won't work otherwise. You can gain S-off and downgrade your touch panel driver, at which point you can run AOSP ROM's like CM.

First of all you might be on the newest touch panel driver, and that's the first thing that gets you in trouble because aosp roms don't work with that, as of now, it might work later... Who knows... Secondly you need to flash the boot.img separately thru fastboot because your are s-on and on 2.09... To make your life easier try to get s-off either thru facepalm or dirty racun... That way you can flash any rom and also downgrade your touch panel driver to get aosp working on your phone... If you flash viper rom it has a senseless option so you can use nova and get stability and some sort of aosp look... Good luck!

Yes, S-off is the way to go if you want to run CM. Otherwise, try meanbean or viper or sharkie or any other sense based Rom. They should work fine.

I have tried to do facepalm. When I put the code in (I'm assuming it goes in the command window), I get messages like "adb not valid command". Even though my phone is most definitely rooted, says unlocked. Should I redownload android-sdk? Thanks again!

ADB commands must be issued when the phone is mounted as media share not as fastboot. Connect your phone as if you were transferring files between it and your pc.
Something new to try since you're on the latest OTA.

I do have it connected to the computer like that. Do you mean I have to go into TWRP and mount it that way? I tried it that way too. I downloaded and whole new android SDK to see if that is the problem. If not, I am going to factory reset my phone and start over. I can't imagine why I was able to root the phone, get it unlocked, but now I can't do anything else with it. Not even get adb commands to recognize it.

This is for tabidee hey I was reading ur stuff on xda developers and I have a question. If u can help if not its cool. Ok so i got my sprint evo and I went to try to root it. I went thru a process that with the steps combined with htcdev site got me to say unlock my bootloader. I used hoot 2.09 and I was supposed to flash this pimg175 zip to i guess install a recovery. Well that won't work at all... I cant get my s on switched to s off and so i am stuck with according to the hoot screen a tampered, unlocked with s on, unrooted phone. I am so confused with all the steps and files I had to download, rename and save to various folders that I gave up. With my phone at its current state what do I do next? I deleted all the files from the day I unlocked it but if you can explain to me... And explain like if I was a five year old cuz I'm that dumbfounded on this subject... But if u can maybe walk me thru the rest of the process or walk me thru a undoing of what I done so far. I'm lisa. My email is [email protected]
Check out the link below. It's a GUI for rooting and has everything you need to get your phone rooted. You'll need to install the recovery first then superuser, which will give you root.

so I still have to connect my sh*t to da pc and go thru some more steps with this lunbuntu thing before though rite? BTW... the HTC software update won't complete itself so I'm still 4.1 I think
