So I've been using my HTC One for a little over a month now. Tried many different ROMs, currently running the leaked 4.2.2 stock ROM.
I've noticed since day one the camera takes really fantastic close-up (3 feet or closer) and macro shots (few inches from subject). It also takes really great low light shots, again close up and macro. These shots in these situations rival my point and shoot Canon.
Once you go outside and take a "normal" shot in great daylight of a group of friends/family, scenery or a building ect. all hell breaks loose. We're talking like one of the worst camera images from a smartphone I've seen recently. Heck my Galaxy S2 and iPhone 3GS took much better looking "normal" shots from a distance.
Images become instantly washed out, details are completely lost, the picture is injected with a super dose of noise everywhere. What is up with this? Is there anyway software will be able to fix the camera in the future? Is it a hardware limitation?
I owned a Galaxy S4 for a few weeks and that phone took brilliant "normal and close up shots" but was severely lacking in low light where images would just be too dark or too blurry.
I'm really quite bummed because the HTC ONE with the new 4.2.2 update is nearly perfect, amazing battery life and performance, much smoother and faster than the POS Galaxy S4. I'm just really pissed that the Camera can't perform in normal situation with great lighting, I would think any Camera would excel in those condition over any other scenario. That and that stupid 5 minute time-out of the LED notification really holds back the HTC One from becoming the perfect smartphone for me.
I wouldn't go as far as saying the camera is atrocious in normal situations, however, the details might not be as good/clear as some other phones. I know the international version got a software update where it addressed many problems such as noise and exposure (issue with pics being washed out ect)... As for the noise issue i think if you go into the camera setting and make sharpness -1 or -2 it will help, at least it did for me. A big issue sometimes for me is that the auto focus is off so it makes the whole picture become what you described, but i guess its probably because i dont have the most steady hands when taking pics lol. I know tmobile pushed a software update a week and a half ago, but i dont think that it did anything to the camera. Apparently, some people say that when you first buy the phone it already comes with that update installed for the camera... but who the hell knows! Tmobile's, AT&T, and Sprints software versions are all different so its hard to tell

regarding "steady hands", i thought this phone has optical image stabilization? i've only taken a few pictures so far and agree that i'm not liking what i see. my previous htc one s takes much better looking picts on well-lit areas. then again my tmous one is still stuck on 1.27 software
I wonder if a software update will fix some of the issues with the camera like focus etc.. Does anyone know? Also, does the new Mate 7 have the same internal hardware for the camera since they are both 13mp? Guy on huawei chat said yes but I think he just read that both were same resolution.

I really do hope it does. The front facing camera is alright, can't really complain, but the rear is quite annoying.
What sort of issues are you having? I've had excellent results with the camera. I'm 100% stock, no mods, kernels or anything.
I don't use the huawei camera app or google. I use the Camera FV-5 app, because it has a ton of customizations.
I took this one this past Easter. Other than being cropped, straight from the camera on the Mate2.

That's a great pic. I noticed what most seem to notice when I googled. The camera has a focus issue and won't seem to lock on. Daily I'm taking pics and you think you got a good shot then the picture is blurry. My gf took some good shots with hers but the object has to be non moving with perfect light and just stand there and wait for the focus to grab versus all the other phones I've had before. I downloaded many different apps and took the same shot with all of them but non seem to do better and some weren't even capable of using 13mp. I'll check out the FV-5, thank you.
That picture is actually quite bad. Poor saturation and quite underexposed.... but meh, it's a phone camera. Pretty flower though!
I think the HAM2 rear camera could definitely be improved in software. It's my opinion that the front facing camera actually works better than the rear camera half the time. Take video for example... try shooting video in a somewhat darkened room with both cameras - you'll find out that the rear camera suffers a horrible loss of framerate while the video from the front facing camera is smooth as silk.
The front camera also has odd tap-to-focus issues especially when flash is enabled.
With that being said it's a cellphone camera and I've definitely seen much worse. And I love the question in the original post.... no one knows the answer but Huawei and their software development team. How would any of us know what Huawei is including in their Android 5.x based update? I'll still be quite surprised if we even get one, and that's WITH the Huawei blog announcements and the so far worthless 'beta' registration site.....

I was thinking more if anyone has noticed improvements in camera in previous upgrades of other devices so someone could comment "hey when the Honor 6 got it's new OS the camera problems were largely improved" or something like that. For sure nobody can know what the Huawei peeps are doing unless there is a Huawei peep on our lil ole forum. I'm sure you're right, if we even get an update they'll act like there was never an issue with the camera and do nothing. My friend ordered the Mate 7 but I read a review that sounded like it's the same camera as ours still and that's an expensive phone.

It sure doesn't match my dSLR, but like you said...it's a pinhole cell phone sensor...not much wiggle room.
Okay, I love this phone. I love the camera. Just work with the settings to get what you want. Now, THE ONLY THING, is the warp zones in the front facing camera. Always try to get the faces in the center of the screen or else itll appear warped.
Try it out and see for yourself. I guess that's the downside to having a long phone. The lens in the camera has to recompensate and redistribute the photons evenly.

Quite a simple question, why can I not turn soft snap off on the stock camera app?
When taking a selfie, regardless of camera settings, the app keeps trying to apply "soft snap" to the pictures? Is this a bug? Why won't it turn off with the toggle in the settings (soft skin effect)?, Or is that another "filter" again? Why can't things be left as they are :laugh:
Also I'm incredibly surprised at how laggy and slow the shutter is to take pictures from the pressing of the button; I've a first gen Pixel XL which is still in use and it's MUCH faster for a nearly 4 year old phone.

Deactivating soft skin in parameter do work for me. I just checked since I never use front cam to make portrait since you'll always be distorted by a wide angle camera from 50cm away.
Anyway, here is a crop I just did, you can easily see small hairs and skin detail : http://imgur.com/a/nrsSLUr
The crop is like +200% on a ok quality selfy, so yeah, quality is not best. But then again, that's just a selfy cam.
No lag for me from the dedicated photo button. Just the normal double step button to first focus then take the photo. Be sure to press all the way down. Sorry that you encounter so many issue with your device :/ xperia 1 has some flaws, but that's more like no possibility to go manual mode with x2 or ultra wide angle, fingerprint working only 75 to 90% of the time and white bala'ce can be off in colored low light.

Yeah, understand the two stages of the button press, but do you get lag with the software button though, I know i do? It's such a shame, for years of "improvements" on a phone, it's hasn't advanced much from my first gen pixel
Ho! You are right, sorry, I'm so not used to selfie cam I didn't even checked this.
Yeah, the AI enhancement can't be deactivated in auto mode, and that's somewhat silly (the same kind of silly than not having manual mode onx2 and wide lens).
The workaround is to switch to manual mode (once selected, the manual mode stay as a quick one press button, so it's not that boring) and let all the parameter on auto. You'll have an auto mode with no AI enhancement. Then again, for quality selfie, I would recommend using the x2 lens (but you will get the AI enhancement) or the x1 (in manual but need a crop) with eye autofocus and smile detection to take a self portrait, it will be less distorted since taken for an arm length, but that's just my 2 cents . The eye autofocus while ensure a good focus and the smile detection while take the photo for you. But you will not see yourself during the process so it takes multiple attempt. But result is far better. That goes for every phone in fact, but eye focus is a wonder here!
I don't think the AI enhancement work with tiers party app so video call should be ok.
I thought you were talking about the physical button. I don't really know, for me it's like 0.2sec or something like that, I can't even think of a quicker camera, especially with the focus being done at the moment of the press. It gives me the same speed feel as a dedicated camera with a shutter. Are other phone quicker? It didn't shocked me when I tried P30Pro or Oppo Reno 10X, they felt all the same for me.
I just received my shiny S21, so far Have adjusted ok from the s10. However, I'm having alot of lag when using the camera, press the button then 5-10 seconds later the thumbnail appears. Slo-motion video stutters and is not smooth on replay! Quite a different experience from the s10 that was flawless!
Any suggestions? I've cleared data/cache for the camera app and no change.
Did you also check for Software Updates? There was a software update (AUA3) waiting for me after setting up the phone, but on my S21 Ultra. I'd imagine you may have one as well as top line in the patch notes offers "The performance of Camera has been improved" which may or may not help with your issue.
Im on AUA4 (Australia) dated 20/1/21, no doubt they will resolve it, bit frustrating but apart from that I'm really liking the experience!
I have the Snapdragon S10. I always shoot video in 4k30 HDR10+ and the results are superb. So when I bought my wife the S21 (Exynos), I immediately set her camera to the same video mode. Unfortunately, it is virtually unusable in this mode. Camera interface drops to 10 frames per second, takes a while to start, and seems to record for a good 5 seconds or so after pressing stop. The latest update specified "Camera performance improvements" but seemed to make no difference. Very disappointed and I hope this is fixed in a future update! Worried this is an Exynos-only problem.
Try clearing cam data.
Clear system cache.
Try a hard reboot (not reset!)
If cam has been update go back to factory load.
I personally don't like that it's not near instant when taking pictures. Expected better.

Even the best pro cams have shutter lag.
To get that kind of fast fluidity you pay big bucks; the cost of a couple of these smart phones.
All the phones including the 10+ are slow compared to my pro cam from 11 years ago.
AF lock on times though may have been similar because of the mass of the optics the lens micromotors had to move. The AF was a lot better though as were the controls. That's close to $10G of cam/lense though.
Is the already AF locked on before you hit the release?
Acquiring an AF lock takes the longest amount of time generally. Using target tracking (yellow brackets) can help reduce the time.
Considering the size of these cams they do quit well. You need to work within any cam's limitations regardless and view the world as it does.
My Exynos S20+ 5G also has this problem too. Interface is laggy, and there is almost impossible to record fluid slow motion video. I have the impression that it is even worse after the last update than before.

A pro cam and set of lens will ruin you forever... these phones are more like toys.

Got the same problem latest update maybe its exnyos thing?
All of the recent updates (incl. June update) contain fixes for camera. And it seems to indeed help, however, only for few hours after update. After few hours the lag comes back...

Check memory usage periodically... see if you can spot which apk is doing it.

Nice and specially the faster photo taking, but I don't see anything about post-processing...
I can see some post-processing things. Point 3 - more sharpening, <sarcasm on> because out of the box Samsung is applying to less <sarcasm off>.
As predicted, no serious change. stock camera picture will continue to suck.
Luckily we have gcam on this device (the reason I went back to Samsung after 10 years)

Yes, I'm using GCAM as well and I'm quite happy with the picture quality, but it is frustrating that you need to use 3rd party app to make a camera for a such expensive device (which is by the way advertised as a camera-oriented one with exceptional quality) usable. And would be nice to make better use of that high-resolution sensor that we have. I know, that it is not possible to heave real 200Mpix or even 50Mpix pictures, but with good algorithms that would be more than 12Mpix that we have in the GCAM.

I hope this update will fix the photos and especially - the video stabilization bug that is unacceptable in a phone of such class.
In march I once had a pretty important event of which I took a couple of videos. All of them are shaky as hell - there is literally zero video stabilization on them. Pretty annoying given that the stabilization on S23 series is great and WAS great with january security patch, but they destroyed it in February or March patch.
Photos are also an oversharpened disaster. Can't wait for the update.

If you were shooting fhd 60 fps then yes, that issue has been addressed. As for the rest, nope. Check first post for release notes.

Enable auto FPS until this update is released. This fixes stabilization issue on [email protected]
Probably in preparation of camera update, received an update of Camera Assistant (CA) app. New feature is reported:
"-Prioritize focus over speed
Wait for the camera to finish focusing before triggering the shutter. This may delay the shutter slightly."
The feature is actually not (yet) visible in the CA-app...
What's a gcam profile for the 23u?
I'm hoping it will stop the over saturation and balance photos better. Sometimes the colors it shows defy reality!

You have high hopes. There is nothing about that is the changelog.
I'll wait for the update to be released before offering an opinion on how good or bad it is.
Seems like minor update that's tweaking AF on stills and bunch of video mode fixes. Unless they don't list other tweaks

Mine is the best S Series Camera to date.
Must be a batch difference.
I took over 300 pics and vids comparing s22U to S23U and my results coincided with most every experienced YouTube reviewer.....overall: damned good with improvements expected
