I wonder if will have power to run a portable 1.8" HDD like Samsung S1 Mini.

Hi!
USB flash, keyboards, mouses and josticks works with SK17 like a charm with .042 and .058 (For flash uses Q5 Memory Manager, search in forum for that) USB HDD Seagate starts to blink indicator and i dont wait until it breaks and disconnect Likely phone cant produce right voltage for right working. I read something about HHD's in DooMLoRD threads, he adviced not to connect it
Would you make the same suggestion for external hard drives that have their own power source?

Oh... You cant believe it, today i broke my IDE-to-USB cable >_<
If i get another one soon i let you know
---UPDATED---
Today bought a new cable, i think tomorrow i'll be able to try it!
Otg is possible for real?
so 2days ago bought one and tried with mouse, pendrive and keyboard. But it doesnt worked for me i tried with 3 kernels: stock, krsh, rage but nothing im on .58 fw what am i doing wrong? I tried also with booting up with plugged cable but stills the same
FINALLY i'm found some free time for experiments. Im feel so dumb, sorry I was absent for a long time Hard disks WORKS! 2.5 IDE disk connected like a charm, but only with external power source (for me it's another USB port).
To Slawernos:
Which firmware did you have? And what kind of cable you bought?
So tha cable i bought was not otg cable as described... ive dispatched the cable and shortcutted the 4-5 pin. This was the way to enable host mode on my phone so i can confirm its working. Im on rage kernel now. Experiments: Keyboard and Mouse(even wireless mouse that i used for test) is working. Confirmed.
The cable that i used : item no 380396053725 ebay.
Good luck with experiments!
USB keyboard:Logitech UltraX Premium Keyboard, wireless mouse: Logitech VX Revolution are working on stock firmware (.42) but no storage devices.
For storage devices to work, "USBOTG STORAGE MANAGER for ARC" app is needed (not free). With this app installed, a new folder ~USB Storage will apear on sdcard , where you can access the data on USB device.
I tried with A-Data PD7 8gb and with portable HDD Samsung S1 Mini 250 GB 1.8" and is working. (probable because S1 Mini is 1.8" small and I think is 3600rpm only) Fat32 OK, NTFS not working and other linux FS not tried.

Is it possible to install usb otg driver in se live with walkman? I have installes the usb otg application abd it says it doesnt support it. But i have seen a kernel which provides support for usb otg. The problem is, i dont know how to flash kernels in my phone? Anybody can help me here? Thanks
I should work on stock kernel and firmware. It has to be rooted and busybox installed. the usb otg app has rooting and busybox check functions. There is no need to mount every time in app, it will automatically recognize storage devices.
The only problem is that last firmware (.62 is not directly rootable, only older versions)

I have not installed anything for OTG for these two as I tend to use samba for external storage.

USB OTG should work without root, according to me, it does.
USB OTG is not related to rooting or busybox at all.
I've spent the day using this (messages with keyboard and mouse seem so weird!) and realised that there's the problem of charging! There needs to be a micro usb f in here somewhere :/

Depends on the gamepad and phone's functions. Might work on some games.
EDIT: Checked mini pro white paper, USB OTG is not listed there, so officialy support seems to be missing.

Plug in a pad, start one of those and assign new keys.

Btw, OTG does work on the stock Ray kernel - A Nokia CA-157 cable works perfectly if you want to connect a mouse or keyboard. If you want to connect a USB memory stick or card reader, you'll also need a rooted phone, a kernel module, and a helper app to load everything. (You'll also need a compatible USB memory stick - if it draws too much power, it won't work as the phone can only provide 200ma on its USB port)
I documented this all on my blog: http://blog.grapefruitopia.com/post/17548799734/using-usb-storage-devices-on-a-rooted-xperia

A little addition to this:
- Xperia Ray users ofcourse have to use a little converter piece before we can use a mini USB OTG cable. I got this with my TomTom car charger.
- The module loader app couldn't keep the usb-storage.ko module loaded. The Q5 app could see my USB stick, then I mounted it, but I could never see it with root explorer. When I checked back, the device wasn't mounted anymore and the module wasn't loaded anymore. I found this package that flashes the module and lets the Q5 app load it. So no need anymore for the module loader app. Now I can acces my USB stick, card reader, externally powered HDD etc flawlessly :d
- Glad to find that USB mouses and keboards works from stock with no extra apps. I can even use my wireless ones.
Hah - got this working on on my rooted stock ICS .562:
go grab doomlords modules here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224676
and load them using doomlords module loader here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224676
Then use the Q5 USB Memory Stick Manager from here:
http://android.gval.biz/

Hello,
I've used my tablet with flash drives etc. with the OTG cable. Before few days the OTG stopped working.
I though it's from ES File Manager because I use this app very often and I have clicked somewhere and disabled the OTG function.
So, I made decision to pre-install my android firmware and clear everything. > I did this.
And then I put the OTG cable with the flash drive connected and then a USB mouse - the flash drive does not connect, the optic ot the mouse only lights up and then it goes off and the mouse does not work too. I tried the OTG cable on my phone (SGS 2) and it's working perfectly.
Can you guys help me to solve this problem?
Is OTG support releated to hardware or software, kn other words can OTG be enabled with only adding that feature to kernel or I need some hardware requirements beside usb flash and otg cable?

OTG support requires both hardware and software support. If your android is rooted then you can enable OTG support using USB OTG helper
You require OTG cable when enabling OTG support.

No you cant.
First lets understand how otg works.
First of all , for Pendrive or Storage to work , you need power for it to function.
There are two eays to power up the pendrive.
i)Power from your phone's battery
ii)External Power
No matter how much you tweak your software , without providing power to the pendrive , you cannot run an otg.
You can always google and find out if your chipset supports otg or not.
If your chipset supports otg and your device doesnt , you can always root your device and try StickMount or USB Otg Helper , but if your chipset doesnt support otg , you need to power up pendrive externally , using a usb Y cable.
After you've acquired the cable you may try the above mentioned root applications to try out your luck.
I am 90% sure that your device wont support otg even after providing external power because of your kernel.
Your kernel is the one which controls all mounting point and hardware devices in your phone.
Good luck/

Its worth giving a try , usb y cable is available for less than $5 now a days.
For mounting ntfs , USB Otg Helper is mandatory though , even after kernel modifications.
Or maybe libraries can be manually installed
Anyway , Cheers

I needed a tab for my car dash entertainment/navigation so i ended up buying a cheap verizon ellipsis 8 (model QTAQZ3). Its perfect for runing multimedia and navigation but it dnt have Otg support which i need to attach rear view cam. I rooted it with kingroot 4.1 and installed root explorer. I have placed android.hardware.usb.host.xml and updated vx.core.hardwarwe.xml. now now i used all otg diagnotics and mounting apps but all are showing otg and usb host active but Linux kernel 3.10.0 (andoid 4.2.2) is not otg supported and no usb flash or usb cam is geting recognized by ellipsis 8. Is there any patch for kernal that will do the job? Wht should be next step??

I can not change default USB in developer options either. When I attempt to run adb my device is not recognized. When I enable USB tethering the only popup I get on my phone is to turn off debugging. I mention AMD because their USB controllers have problems with some peripherals. It's a documented issue and I had my own USB nightmares with a Ryzen laptop a couple years ago. Kernel panics from bootable USB sticks was one of the problems. Replacing the laptop with its i7 equivalent solved everything.

I went to dev options for default USB I selected USB tethering. USB default still greyed out can't toggle.

I'd say good progress as long as you're getting output from adb. fastboot should output too but it's not very useful without an unlocked bootloader.
Your descriptions make sense, I'm just short on suggestions because I'm not familiar with phones locked by AT&T except for the usual carrier barriers. Normally with phones that are carrier unlocked, no USB changes should be needed for file transfer mode other than selecting the option in Settings/Connected devices whenever the phone is connected. And for adb or fastboot only USB debugging needs to be enabled. For my Pixel and all phones before it, I've never had to tamper with USB settings in Dev options aside from enabling debugging to get it all working.
I agree. The bootloader will be unlocked in a couple weeks. Without adb it wouldn't matter if it was unlocked or not.
Now that permission has been given to my computer I don't have to mess with it. Wasn't about USB more about that certificate.

Solved this by installing windows on another device on a blank ssd and then put it into old laptop to be able to boot.
Looks to me like you need to change your boot type to UEFI.

Maybe change also Sata Type to AHCI and check UEFI Settings.
Or use rufus to generate exact uefi/legacy boot stick.. maybe your stick itself isnt bootable.

When I try to boot from USB drive which has installation distributive I get different errors.

But my mistake.
If every one of your drives is able to boot on other PCs but not this laptop, you have the common denominator - the laptop. It sounds to me like a broken/buggy BIOS, especially given that attempting to update the BIOS results in an error.
Have you tried clearing CMOS/NVRAM? This may be difficult seeing as it's a laptop; removing the CMOS battery in my Alienware 17 requires complete disassembly as it's not accessible unless the mainboard is removed from the chassis. However, many OEMs provide some means of clearing CMOS/NVRAM by a key combo.

Can I reflash BIOS of this laptop?

No. But I reseted BIOS settings to default of manufacture. Should I buy a new CMOS or just to plug out and plug in it?

I don't know. You'd have to check the Asus website to see if they still have your current BIOS version, although updating it would generally be better.

No, the CMOS is usually soldered to the board. CMOS = Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor...which in contemporary terms means almost every integrated circuit and chip.
Resetting BIOS through the setup isn't quite the same as clearing all values. If you're able to access the BIOS battery (most likely by removing the bottom of the laptop) you can remove it and short the terminals for about 60 seconds. I searched for some information on your laptop and unfortunately the user manual wasn't any help.
